UN’AGRICOLTURA
SOSTENIBILE A TUTELA
DELLA BIODIVERSITÀ

L
a nostra ricchezza è
data dalla biodiversità.
Abbiamo un patrimonio unico, costituito dalla
varietà delle nostre flora e
fauna, che potremo preservare solo se riusciremo a mantenere inalterato il prezioso
equilibrio tra la natura e l’azione dell’uomo.
L’agricoltura, in questo,
svolge un ruolo fondamentale:
l’evoluzione delle attività
agricole ha contribuito in
molti casi ad arricchire la biodiversità.
Vogliamo che continui a
farlo anche in futuro.
Il primo settore, infatti,
può contribuire a modellare un ambiente seminaturale che garantisce la
sopravvivenza di alcune specie endemiche minacciate di estinzione.
Il nostro compito, allora, sarà sostenere un’agricoltura non intensiva,
che conservi specie, varietà o razze di piante ed animali sia selvatici che
domestici, ma anche ecosistemi talvolta in via di estinzione. E, grazie alla

selezione e alla ricerca di piante e animali addomesticati, contribuire
anche alla variabilità intraspecifica, mantenendo inalterati molti ecosistemi che altrimenti scomparirebbero, con l’abbandono di determinate
attività agricole.
Tutto questo costituisce un patrimonio genetico unico. Da non disperdere. Se non vogliamo alterare il nostro benessere, con danni irreparabili.
Per questo, riteniamo fondamentale implementare il ruolo della ricerca, diretta a studiare e conservare le biodiversità.
Introdurremo provvedimenti mirati e su misura che aiutino a mantenere un’attività agricola economicamente efficiente e socialmente
accettabile, che salvaguardi la biodiversità, soprattutto in regioni particolarmente ricche da questo punto di vista, nelle quali l’agricoltura è
regredita.
Fino a poco tempo fa a chi mi avesse chiesto da che cosa è costituito il
più grande tesoro dell’umanità avrei dato risposte imprevedibili, fantasiose, forse banali, comunque sbagliate. Ora rispondo che il più grande
tesoro dell’umanità si trova in una lontanissima isola del Circolo artico,
esattamente nell’isola norvegese di Spitsbergen, dove, in uno scenario
fantascientifico, vengono immagazzinati e conservati miliardi di semi, che
sono i sicuri ingredienti di un futuro dell’umanità garantito, proprio perché c’è lassù questa specie di “polizza d’assicurazione contro qualunque
genere di minaccia a breve e a lungo termine”.
Se vogliamo davvero preservare la nostra terra, garantendo il futuro
dell’umanità, dobbiamo porci con la massima umiltà, custodendo con la
massima cura quel patrimonio genetico, che ha originato per la prima
volta la vita.

O
ur wealth is given by biodiversity. We have a unique heritage,
composed by the diversity of our flora and fauna, that it will be
possible preserve only if we maintain the precious balance
between nature and action of man.
In this regard, agriculture plays a fundamental role: in many cases the
farming activity evolution has contributed to the improvement of biodiversity. We want that agriculture will keep on to do this even in the
future.
The first sector, in fact, can play a key role in shaping a semi-natural environment able to ensure the survival of endemic species endangered. Our task, then, will be to support non-intensive agriculture that
preserves species, varieties or breeds of plants and, wild and domestic
animals as well, but also sometimes endangered ecosystems. And,
thanks to the selection and research of plants and domesticated animals, also contribute to intraspecific variability, maintaining many
ecosystems that would otherwise disappear abandoning certain agricultural activities.
All this constitutes a unique genetic heritage. This cannot be scattered
if we do not want to alter our welfare with irreversible damages.
For this purpose, we believe that it is fundamental to implement the
role of research, directed to study and conserve biodiversity.
We introduce targeted and precise measures to help to maintain an
agricultural activity economically efficient and socially acceptable, able

to safeguard biodiversity, especially in regions particularly rich from this
point of view, where agriculture has declined.
Until a few time ago, who was asking me about the greatest treasure of
humanity I would have given answers unpredictable, imaginative, perhaps trivial, however wrong. Now I say that the greatest treasure of
humanity is located in a distant island of the Arctic Circle, the Norwegian
island of Spitsbergen, where in a fictional scenario, are stored and preserved billion of seeds, which are the ingredients of a guaranteed future
of humanity, exactly because there is this kind of “insurance policy
against any kind of threat in the short and long term.”
If we really want to preserve our land, securing the future of humanity, we have to behave with the greatest humility, fostering with the
utmost care that genetic heritage, which led to first life.
