New Years is a special time of year for me as it allows me to give thanks for the successful relationships, events, and achievements during the year. This year the ICCA has had many successes and we should all be very proud of the hard work our volunteers and Executive have put into ensuring our future is well in hand. While there are countless examples of these successes the ones that come to mind include the highly successful Italian Weekend, the new library commemoration, the new format of the Mother’s Day celebration, the various dignitary events hosted at the ICCA, the awarding of the Italian Grand Official Medal to Archbishop Hayes, the introduction of the ‘Next‐Generations’ youth group, and a very successful New Years Eve party. This year at the Annual General Meeting the Executive will also announce that considerable reductions in our overall clubhouse mortgage were achieved. This reduction is the outcome of the continued hard work of our Treasurer, Executive and volunteers who helped us identify cost savings, increased revenues and increased the exposure of the ICCA to outside groups for hall rentals. It was a highly successful year overall. New Years also allows me to look forward to upcoming opportunities and potential challenges we may face. We hope to minimize any challenges, and capitalize on the right opportunities. We will need our members help on this. Additionally this year we are into the second year of trying to identify individuals within our club that will become part of our longer term succession plan. We will need all interested individuals to make sure we are aware that you would like to become more involved in the ICCA. On behalf of the Executive I would like to wish all our members the very best of health, happiness and fortunes during 2010. Luigi Velocci Sunday Dinners are Back!

Anno Nuovo
By Caterina Fava
Buon 2010 a tutti. A New Year
By Caterina Fava
A New Year has started and we have left all the festivities behind. It is time to go back to our routines. We ate well, relaxed, partied with families and friends and gave and received gifts. And, now with the commencement of another year, we are all busy with resolutions and work. Fortunately, we have our memories of the holidays to console us! Our Association had a number of activities which added to these memories. On New Years Eve, many of our members and their friends gathered for a wonderful party as they said good‐bye to 2009. A special menu and some good music helped make our entrance in the new decade unforgettable. th
On January 10 , the Befana arrived in Halifax, (with her broom) to visit all the little children and to hand out many treats. While waiting for her arrival, the children played games, drew amazing masterpieces and created fancy jewelry. And to top off a great event, pizza was served just as the Befana was leaving! Our young members also partied for the New Year a bit later in the month with another successful Next Generation Party which was held in our cozy Club Room. Here too, there was music and food, chatting and board games ‐ all which animated the night. The evening ended with a delicious slice of Panettone – alas, no more to be had until next Christmas! Happy 2010 to everyone! Condoglianze

La Befana
By Alessandra Rosetti
The Befana made a visit to the ICCA on January 10th. She was welcomed by a large group of excited children who were waiting to receive their succulent treats. The Befana had to travel for many hours. She came directly from Italy where she had delivered treats to other Italian children. She whispered in my ear that she is always thinking about her little Canadian friends and she does not mind having to working a few extra hours. The event was a huge success. We coloured, made crowns, painted cute faces, and made sparkling jewelry. We read some books and most of all we danced a lot, while listening to some nice Italian songs from “Lo Zecchino d’oro”. I was in charge of the event and I would not have been able to organize it without the help of the sweetest girls in the world: Alessandra Pagnottella, Clara Bullock, Francesca Nardi, Faye Evans and Natasha Gasparetto. They spent all the afternoon playing with the children making their day really special. I would like to thank Bruna and Marie Claire. They spent many hours cooking and the results were very pleasing our appetites. As usual, the food was simply extraordinary! I hope you had fun and that you will come again next year. Of course, you must be good….. or no treats! Grazie a tutti! Next Generation Party
By Alessandra Rosetti
On January 9th 2010, we rocked the New Year with another amazing party. The evening was fun, and we were really pleased to have new guests. Friends brought many new friends and we all shared food, games and laughs. Lanfranco, alias “Chef Ratatouille”, made a really succulent pasta, filling our mouths and melting our hearts with pleasure. Grazie Franco! I think that spending some quality time together is really important for our generation and for the future ones. Our grandparents have been doing the same before us and we must continue the tradition. Most of all, it is our interest to keep the Italian culture alive. Grazie to Melissa, Alessandra and Natasha for organizing the event. It was wonderful to have fun together! Another Next Generation’s party is coming up, stay tuned!!! Find us on

Italian Radio Show
By Alessandra Rosetti
Alessandra Rosetti is no longer the radio host of “ Dal Mondo Italiano” at the CKDU radio in Halifax. We are looking for a new radio host for the show, someone who will wish to broadcast not only Italian songs but also our culture, sense of humor and happiness! So please if you are interested in becoming the most amazing radio host ever please contact: Erica Butler, station coordinator: [email protected] (902) 494.6479 / TarekAl‐Zand, Program Director: [email protected] (902)494.6479 Or go to www.ckdu.ca How to become a radio host for the CKDU radio in Halifax STEP 1: COME TO AN ORIENTATION. Attending a Volunteer Orientation is the first step to becoming a CKDU Programmer. The Orientation takes about half an hour and it covers who we are, what we do and why we do it. You'll learn about all the things you'll need to do to become a fully‐trained volunteer and a member of The CKDU FM Society. You'll also get a tour of the station. C'mon down! STEP 2: LEARN THE RULES There are THREE training sessions that every new programmer has to attend. Programming Rules and Regulations, which covers basic office policies and rules surrounding what kinds of music you can and can't play; Spoken Word Rules and Regulations, which covers all the stuff you need to know about the spoken content of your show; and Technical Training, which covers the technical aspects of being a programmer, from how to cue up a record to using our computers. You can do the sessions in any order, and once you've completed them all you'll receive a temporary membership card that gives you access to the station after hours and on weekends. NOTE: All the times for upcoming orientations and training sessions are listed on our website's calendar– if you don't see days or times that match your schedule, please feel free to give us a call and we'll be happy to set something up that works for you. Just get in touch with the relevant staff member and he or she will help you out. You can find more details about all of these sessions if you scroll down to the "GETTING TRAINED" section of this page. STEP 3: PUT IN SOME TIME. Alongside the mandatory training sessions, new programmers also have to do FIVE HOURS of volunteer work at the station. This can be anything from refilling records to cleaning out the microwave to voicing on air ads and promos to putting up posters around the city for upcoming CKDU events. We also offer an optional tour of our music library that counts towards your volunteer hours. It's a great way to learn about our filing system and shave down your volunteer time – we recommend it to everyone! STEP 4: MAKE A DEMO. After you've taken care of all the training sessions and have your temporary membership, you'll be able to come into CKDU's studios on evenings and weekends in order to get more comfortable using the equipment. You can sign up for time in our Production Control Room (PCR) and, when you feel ready, make your demo. The demo is a one‐take, fifteen minute demonstration that you have the basic skills needed to get on air and be OK. We're not listening to it and making fun of your taste in music or how your voice sounds – we're just making sure that you know how to use the mic, how to play ads and info spots, and other basic things like that. STEP 5: GET YOUR PERMANENT CARD! The last step in the training process is taking the permanent card test. While this may sound scary, it's actually one of the easiest tests you'll ever take. We're not trying to weed anyone out or pull a fast one – all we want to do is be sure that you know the basic rules and regulations about the station so we can feel OK about leaving you alone in the studio at 2am on a Saturday night all by yourself. You'll arrange a time to come in and take the test, you'll get a copy of the questions and the answers ahead of time to go over, and then you'll come in and do it. It's a no‐fail test, so if you miss a question, we'll simply go over the answers and go through it again until you get it right. After you've passed the permanent card test, you'll get your fancy, laminated, permanent CKDU membership card and be asked to pay the membership fee. Our yearly fee is $15, but it's free for students at Dalhousie and King's. If you can't afford $15, don't worry – we're happy to work out alternate arrangements, like extra volunteer hours or a special project. Once you've received your permanent card, you're free to start doing on‐air fill‐ins, getting involved behind the scenes and applying for a show of your own. La Voce, Issue 104 Febbraio / February
