The Internment of Italian Canadians during World
War Two – A Project
Presented by Dr. Giulia De Gasperi
The project is a partnership between the AICW, Guernica Editions and Accenti Magazine, with co-publisher
Columbus Centre of Toronto and was launched in June 2011 with the aim of increasing public awareness and
knowledge about the internment of Italian Canadians during the Second World War. The project consists of
the production and wide distribution of two companion books on the internment, one with academic essays
and one with creative works that will be published in both traditional print media and as electronic books.
Some of these works have been selected and appeared in issues of Accenti Magazine. The books will be
published in winter 2012. During 2012, AICW Remembers will feature various events in major cities across
Canada to present the project and bring awareness about this not-well-known episode in Canadian History.
The presentation will take place Wednesday, March 21st at 7:00PM at the Italian Canadian Culture
Association, 2629 Agricola Street, Halifax, NS.

Festa dei Cacciatori

This year`s annual Festa dei Cacciatori was truly a feast for
those who love wild game.
Presented by the Associazione Trevisani nel Mondo dell
Nuova Scozia, (Trevisani nel Mondo Association of Nova
Scotia) more than 150 guests gathered at the ICCA on
January 26th, to once again be part of the hunter`s feast
tradition. Spearheaded by Renato Gasparetto, an avid
hunter, he along with family and friends contributed a
portion of this season’s game to the five course dinner.
Beginning with risotto con funghi (rice with wild
mushrooms), alce con polenta (moose with polenta),
quaglia con patate al forno e verdure (quail with roasted
potatoes and vegetables), insalata (salad) and dolci
(dessert), the dinner was followed by a serving of delicious
homemade grappa. During the dinner, Loris DiQuinzio also an avid hunter, shared some stories about the
hunter`s hunting season, as well as indulged the guests with a few off the cuff jokes.

Each year this event is made possible by a collection of hard-working organizers and volunteers. We would
like to thank the Trevisani nel Mondo, along with a special thanks to the hunters, Renato Gasparetto, Danilo
Gasparetto, Loris DiQuinzio, Amedeo Ravina, Settimio DiRemigio and Steve Grover.

ICCA Library
At the ICCA Center we are proud owners of a small but unique library. It is a combination of books which
have been gifted in part by the Italian Government, as well as of many volumes donated through the
years by members of our Club and the community at large. Any contribution is at all times both
appreciated and encouraged. The library will be open on Tuesday and Thursday evenings 7 to 8:30 p.m.

If you would like to have your name added to the list of servers and bar staff, please send an email to

information. Servers should be at least 15 years of age and bar staff are required to be at least 19 years
of age. Please note that you may be asked to volunteer for ICCA sponsored events (i.e.- Mother's Day,
Father's Day, etc) but would be compensated for rental events (weddings, private parties, etc.).

Strufoli

Ingredients:
8 eggs
8 T of milk
8 T of extra-virgin olive oil
8T of sugar
16 T of flour
1 glass of mistral (an anise
liqueur) or rum
grated peel of one lemon
1 t. baking powder
vanilla (optional)
honey
alchermes (a red liqueur of Persian origin of spices, rosewater, anice) – if you cannot
find, try substituting with Marsala)
Mix together – con energia! – all ingredients except honey and alchermes until a well-mixed batter is
formed. Add flour as needed – or additional milk, if required. Let rest an hour. Put enough sunflower
seed or other vegetable oil in saucepan for frying. Drop tablespoonfuls of the batter into boiling oil.
Remove when each strufolo is golden, placing on paper towel so as to absorb the oil.
When all the strufoli have been fried, drip honey over them or splash with alchermes.
Note: Years ago, pig lard was used for frying, ie, an animal fat, thus making the strufoli not suitable for
consumption after the beginning of Lent.
A tip for frying: keep flame low as frying starts, raising the heat gradually and reaching maximum heat
just before removing the strufoli from the oil.

Veglione di Capodanno

Il 31 Dicembre l’Associazione italiana ha festeggiato Capodanno. La serata è
iniziata alle 19.00 con cocktails nel nostro Club Room ed ha proseguito con
l'entrata nella sala principale, decorata semplicemente, ma con buon gusto,
dove una cena di 5 portate è stata servita . E che cena!!!
Tutti i partecipanti , elegantemente vestiti, hanno avuto solamente
complimenti per la quantità e la varietà del cibo ed hanno ringraziato
personalmente i cuochi che hanno lavorato per 3 giorni per il banchetto.
La serata è stata allietata dalla musica del D.J. che ha saputo intrattenere le 100
persone presenti in sala , con musica moderna e con i nostri dischi di valzer e
tanghi.
La magnifica serata è stata brillantemente presentata dal nostro vicepresidente
Maria Hayes che ha simpaticamente intrattenuto gli ospiti .
Allo scoccare di mezzanotte bottiglie di spumante sono state aperte e tutti i partecipanti hanno brindato, si sono abbracciati, baciati e scambiati gli
auguri per un anno migliore.
Durante la serata, il Presidente Luigi Velocci e il Tesoriere Giovanni De Nicola, hanno annunciato l'estinzione del mutuo del nostro edificio. La notizia è
stata accolta con grande piacere dai presenti, che hanno congratulato tutte le persone che con il loro arduo lavoro hanno reso questo possibile in cosí
poco tempo .
Ringraziamenti speciali a Maria Hayes, Mikela Sani e Laura Nardi, che con la loro
dedizione hanno reso questo evento eccezionale, e i cuochi, Luigi, nostro
Presidente, Lanfranco, Bruna , Maria e David per la succulenta cena!
Grazie anche a tutti i partecipanti, con la speranza di veder più italiani in sala il
prossimo Capodanno. Ancora una volta: Buon anno a tutti.
New Year's Eve

On December 31, The Italian Association celebrated the New Year. The evening
began at 7 p.m. with cocktails in our club room and continued in the main room,
decorated simply but with good taste, where a 5 course dinner was served. And
what a dinner!!!!
All participants were elegantly dressed and had compliments for the amount and
variety of food. Many personally thanked the cooks who worked for three days to prepare the banquet. The evening was enlivened by music from the
D.J. who knew how to entertain the 100 people in attendance with modern music and our records of waltzes and tangos.
The wonderful evening was brilliantly presented by our Vice President Maria
Hayes, who cheerfully entertained the guests. At the stroke of midnight,
champagne bottles were opened and all participants toasted the New Year,
hugged, kissed, and exchanged good wishes for a better future. During the
evening, the president Luigi Velocci, and Giovanni De Nicola, announced the
extinction of the mortgage of our building.
The news was greeted with great delight by those present, who congratulated all
those who made this possible in such short time, through their hard work and
determination.
Thanks to Maria Hayes, Mikela Sani and Laura Nardi; their contribution made this
event exceptional. Many thanks to all the cooks: Luigi, our President, Lanfranco,
Maria, Bruna and David for the wonderful supper.
Thanks again to all the guests with the hope of seeing more Italian participants in
the upcoming New Year. Happy New Year to everyone!

The Befana did not forget the good little boys
and girls at the ICCA. She stopped by for a visit
in early January and brought goodies for all the
children. She also read a story and everyone,
young and old, listened with great interest as
Befana told the story of her legend. While the
children patiently waited for Befana to arrive,
they played games, made jewelry, coloured
pictures and had their faces painted! The
children, along with their parents and even
some grandparents enjoyed pizza and
panettone and there were even a few
youngsters who showed off their dancing skills
at the end of the afternoon.

Easter in Italy

While you probably won't see the Easter bunny if you're in Italy for Easter, you will find some interesting Italian Easter
celebrations. Like all holidays in Italy, Easter, Pasqua in Italian, has its share of rituals and traditions. The Monday following Easter, la Pasquetta is also a holiday
throughout Italy. While the days before Easter in Italy include solemn processions and masses, Easter is a joyous celebration.
Good Friday and Easter Week Processions
Solemn religious processions are held in many towns on the Friday or Saturday before Easter and sometimes on Easter Sunday. Many churches have special statues of the
Virgin and Jesus that play a big part in the processions. The statues may be paraded through the city or displayed in the main square. Parade participants are often
dressed in traditional ancient costumes. Olive branches are often used instead of or along with palm fronds in the processions and to decorate churches. Enna, in Sicily,
has a large procession on Good Friday, with more than 2,000 friars dressed in ancient costumes walking through the streets of the city. Trapani, also in Sicily, is a good
place to see processions, held several days during Holy Week. Their Good Friday procession is 24 hours long. What's believed to be the oldest Good Friday procession in
Italy is in Chieti in the Abruzzo region. The procession with Selecchi's Miserere played by 100 violins is very moving.
Easter food
Since Easter is the end of the Lent season, food plays a big part in the celebrations. Traditional Easter foods include lamb or goat, artichokes, and special Easter breads
that vary from region to region. Pannetone and Colomba (dove shaped) breads are often given as gifts as are hollow chocolate eggs that usually come with a surprise
inside.
Easter Monday - La Pasquetta
On Easter Monday, some cities hold dances, free concerts, or unusual games often involving eggs. In the Umbrian hill town of Panicale, cheese is the star. Ruzzolone is
played by rolling huge wheels of cheese, weighing about 4 kilos, around the village walls. The object is to get your cheese around the course using the fewest number of
strokes. Following the cheese contest, there is a band in the piazza and of course, wine. Read more about the town of Panicale. Easter Monday is a time to gather with
friends and have fun.
