SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2016: OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE
Dear Parishioners,
Today we celebrate the final Sunday of the Liturgical Year. The
Solemnity of Christ the King directs our attention to the future, God’s
fulfilment of his plan to restore and renew Creation as the New Creation. By way of anticipation, we, as Christians, by our faithful discipleship, make present, already today, this New Creation.
In order to carry out this amazing baptismal vocation – to which
every Christians is called – we worship God every Sunday. This
weekly worship brings us back into the right relationship between
Creator and creature and among creatures. Christ commanded this
worship – “Do this in remembrance of me” – for our benefit. God
does not need our worship, but we sure need to worship Him. If we
fail to do so, we will worship everything else, and find, in our idolatry,
sadness, and ultimately, nothingness.
Music serves to elevate and strengthen our worship of God. Christians carried on the use of music in Israel and enriched this usage with
new forms of music and singing down the ages. It is therefore with
great joy that I can officially announce that Theresa Bissex has accepted the offer to work as our part-time Music Director. If any of
you were able to participate at the very well attended All Souls’ Missa
Cantata or the Masses in the last six weeks, you already can appreciate the care and love that Theresa puts into liturgical music.
Having begun training and working as an organist, vocalist, choir
leader and pianist since 2009, Theresa brings a wealth of experience
and accomplishments to our parish. She expects to complete her
Bachelor of Science in Music with a Minor in Italian-American Studies (!) next spring.
Further, Theresa has extensive experience with Catholic liturgical
music, having worked at several local parishes as well as having performed here at St Rocco over the last few years in the Our Lady of the
Angels Schola. She brings a bright, cheerful face to parish and promises to accomplish great things for the Liturgy. In fact, I am very excited about her program for Lessons and Carols on Sunday, December
18th at 3 pm and in particular, looking forward to the program of
Christmas Carols (at 11:30 pm) and then the celebration of the Midnight Mass on Christmas (at midnight) in the extraordinary form. This
Missa Cantata promises to be exceptional and beautiful; I hope it will
become a more and more familiar part of our worship of God.
So as we gather this Thursday with our families and friends, we
have much for which we should give thanks! From all of the Canons,
we wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving. For those who wish to
thank God in the Liturgy – it’s not a holy day of obligation – Mass
will be at 9 am on Thursday, November 24th.
God bless you,
Father Elias
Cari parrocchiani,
ogni cristiano è chiamato - adoriamo Dio ogni domenica.
musicale a tempo parziale.
In realtà,

Parish Planning Committee
The Parish Planning Committee of the Church of Saint Rocco
is proud to inform the church community that we have prepared our strategic plan for our parish. After a year or preparation and discussion, utilizing the results from thy parish surveys, we are very excited to present our church’s future plans
for the next several years.
Our parish mission statement will be the foundation on which
we will all build together our “vision” for our parish over the
next several years.
We have divided the “vision” into five strategic areas of focus.
These areas will be presented in a handout report which we
have prepared. This report will be distributed, and available to
the parish community at the weekend masses of December 3rd
and 4th.
We will be working directly with the church community and
look forward to implementing our future together.

Feast of Christ the King
Today we celebrate Christ the King! Let us open the door to our hearts so
wide that we can hear the voice of Jesus calling us to help build his kingdom
here on earth.
Week after week, we meet with our neighbors in response to their requests
for help. They need food, warm clothing, help to find a safe place to live or a
referral to social services.
As we head toward Thanksgiving and Christmas, we ask you to put your faith
into action. Please consider making a monetary contribution, volunteering
your time or offering a service. The Glen Cove Conference of St. Vincent de
Paul is a volunteer organization and has no outside sources of funding.
We rely on you to help those who ask us for help to get through hard times!
To learn how you can help, call us at 800-676-5586 or email
[email protected]. Even better, consider joining us at our next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, December 6th.
Our meetings are at St. Rocco’s Parish Center, starting at 7:30 PM.
We look forward to meeting you and thank you for your support!
