SUNDAY, JUNE 1, 2014: SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
Dear Friends in Christ,
This weekend kicks off our Parish Stewardship Campaign for the first time in many years. By this we aim to make
better known the variety of ministries and groups that constitute much of the social, charitable and spiritual wealth of our
parish. Deacon John Fielding, who is spearheading this campaign, will be preaching at all the Mass this Sunday. Please be
attentive and open to his message.
Next weekend we celebrate Pentecost with a Parish Fair
to celebrate the gifts of the Spirit already manifest in our parish. The fair takes places from 8:30-12:00 in the Madonna
Room at which time breakfast will be served. The breakfast is
complementary and given in thanks to you, for all that you do
for Saint Rocco. The CYIA (Catholic Youth in Action) will
help to decorate the Madonna Room. Also, Deacon John
Fielding hopes to present the parish with an up to date parish
directory with short descriptions and contact information at
the fair Lastly, Father Larry Rywalt, CP will be visiting and
offer the Mass at 8:45 am and 11:30 am.
On Monday, June 9th, there is a reception at 7 pm to thank
the Catechists of St Patrick and St Rocco. At 7:30 pm, the
Italian Catechesis meets in the Parish Center for its final
meeting before the summer. This initiative will continue in the
autumn. The Bible Study will meet two more times, June 10th
and June 17th, before summer hiatus.
On the weekend of June 21-22 the Church celebrates Corpus Christi, the Body of Christ. I hope on that weekend to
work practically with the congregation to introduce the possibility of receiving Holy Communion along the sanctuary at
the 10:15 and 11:30 am Masses. In order to do this peacefully
and well, we will need to practice the movement in the church
to the sanctuary and back to the pews.
At Easter I already spoke of the reasons for restoring this
possibility. Holy Communion is a personal act of devotion to
be sure. But it is also an ecclesial act whereby we are constituted as the Body of Christ (one of the three modes of the
Body of Christ we celebrate and honor on Corpus Christi –
the Risen Body, the Sacramental Body (Blessed Sacrament),
and the Mystical Body (the Church). As members of His Mystical Body, we receive Holy Communion together, not as individuals, but as brothers and sisters bound to one another in
faith, hope and charity. The reception of Holy Communion
along the sanctuary, shoulder-to-shoulder, kneeling or standing, reminds us that we are in this together. Yes, salvation is
personal, but it is a social reality. Without the Church, without
other Christians, I could not be saved because I would not
have known Christ. It is through other members of His Mystical Body that I came to become part of His Body (through
Baptism) and came to know Him (through prayer and faith).
Furthermore, the option to receive at the sanctuary also
teaches us to be aware of what is happening during Holy
Cari amici in Cristo,
Spero in quel fine settimana
conosciuto Cristo. È attraverso altri membra del suo corpo
CHURCH OF ST. ROCCO, GLEN COVE, NEW YORK
Communion. I must pay attention to other people. I must be
patient and wait, when necessary, for a place to open, and wait
for My Lord to come to me. Jesus comes to the Communicant.
This is a symbol for the reality of our faith. While religions tell
stories about man’s search for God, Biblical Religion
(Christianity and Judaism, admittedly in somewhat different
ways) tell the story of God’s search for man. Grace – God’s
action – always has the priority. Before we can do anything vis
-à-vis God, He has already graced us with the desire to know,
love and serve Him.
Graciousness, therefore, should be manifested in our conduct in church, with one another and with God. Graciousness
in terms of respect, consideration and yes, reverence and silence. Long Island is a home to much that is without grace. We
need to change that, together, starting here, at Saint Rocco.
God bless you,
Father Elias
Saturday: 3:00pm - 3:45pm
Let us pray for the intentions of our Holy Father
during the month of June…...
Universal Intention: That the unemployed may receive
support and find the work they need to live in dignity.
For Evangelization Intention: That Europe may
rediscover its Christian roots through the witness of believers.
Bulletin Reflection
In today’s Gospel, Jesus prays, “I have given You
glory on earth by finishing the work You gave Me
to do.” Good stewards follow His example by using
their time and talents for the glory of God.
Living Stewardship
We are grateful this week for all stewards in our
parish whose giving - whether of alms or of
service - will be an expression of gratitude for
what the Father has given them.
Rosary Society Bake Sale
Saturday, May 10th. and Sunday May, 11th.
Winner of 50/50
Nancy Draney $220.00
me.
Grazia/
Gentilezza in termini di rispetto, considerazione e sì, riverenza
e silenzio.
Rocco.
Dio Vi Benedica,
Padre Elias
Dear Parishioners,
"America you are beautiful …and blessed…The ultimate test
of your greatness is the way you treat every human being, but
especially the weakest and most defenseless. If you want equal
justice for all and true freedom and lasting peace, then America, defend life."
Blessed Pope John Paul II, now Saint Pope John Paul II, left
us with this as one of his many inspiring messages. This quote
is interesting because it invites action. St. Pope John Paul II
specifically asks Americans to stand up for life, in all its stages,
no matter how small. This is the main goal of the Pro-Life
Committee at St. Rocco’s: to stand up for life.
So, allow me to invite action. In the entranceway to our parish there is a binder with loose-leaf pages and a pen. Please
read the top of the loose-leaf page and you will find that your
signature on this petition would register your objection to the
New York State Women’s Equality Act. If this Act were
passed it would permit abortions on demand throughout all
nine months of pregnancy in New York State. After this Sunday’s Masses I will collect the pages and enclose along with a
letter to Governor Cuomo and various Assemblymen letting it
be known that the people of this parish oppose abortion expansion in New York State and in our country as a whole.
That is it! All you have to do it fill in the appropriate boxes
and we are on our way to registering our objection to the expansion of abortion practice in the State of New York.
