Manpower Employment Outlook Survey
Italian hiring prospects an improvement of 2% year-over-year
Net Employment Outlook stands at -8%
The third-quarter survey reveals:
- Third-quarter hiring plans weakens 2 percentage points quarter over quarter, and improve 2
percentage points year over year.
- Employers in all four regions forecast a decline in staffing levels during 3Q 2014. When compared
with the previous quarter hiring prospects weaken in three of the four regions, most notably by 4
percentage points in Middle Italy and by 2 percentage points in the North East.
- Hiring intentions improve in eight of the 10 industry sectors when compared with 3Q 2013.
Milan, 10 June 2014 - ManpowerGroup Italy released today its quarterly Manpower Employment
Outlook Survey showing sluggish hiring prospects for the July-September time frame. With more
than 1,000 employers responding, 5% of employers expect to increase staffing levels, 10%
forecast a decrease and 81% anticipate no change. Once the data is adjusted to allow for seasonal
variation, the Outlook stands at -8%. Hiring intentions have now only been positive for one quarter
in the past six years.
The Outlook weakens by 2 percentage points when compared with the previous quarter. However,
the forecast is 2 percentage points stronger year-over-year, and Outlooks improve in eight of 10
industry sectors and in two of four regions compared to last year at this time.

Sector comparison
Year-over-year, employers in eight of the 10 industry sectors report stronger hiring intentions. A
sharp improvement of 23 percentage points is reported in the Restaurants & Hotels sector while
increases of 7 and 6 percentage points are reported in the Wholesale & Retail Trade sector and

the Electricity, Gas & Water sector, respectively. Elsewhere, Outlooks weaken in two sectors, with
a decline of 4 percentage points reported in the Agriculture, Hunting, Forestry & Fishing sector and
a decrease of 3 percentage points in the Public & Social sector.
Regional comparison
Employers in all four regions forecast a decline in staffing levels during 3Q 2014. The weakest
labor market is anticipated in the South/Islands where employers report a Net Employment Outlook
of -10%. Sluggish hiring activity is also expected in the North West, with an Outlook of -8%, and
in both the North East and Middle Italy where Outlooks stand at -7%.
When compared with the previous quarter hiring prospects weaken in three of the four regions,
most notably by 4 percentage points in Middle Italy and by 2percentage points in the North East.
However, South/Islands employers report a 4 percentage point improvement.
