PAGINA IN ITALIANO TEMA PER LA QUARESIMA Il nostro tema quaresimale quest'anno è semplicemente 'fame e sete'. In your compassion blot out my offence. O wash me more and more from my guilt and cleanse me from my sin. My offences truly I know them; my sin is always before me. Against you, you alone, have I sinned; what is evil in your sight I have done. A pure heart create for me, O God, put a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence, nor deprive me of your holy spirit. Give me again the joy of your help; with a spirit of fervour sustain me. O Lord, open my lips and my mouth shall declare your praise. Tricia Murray SCHOOL PRINCIPAL GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Mr Philip Cachia Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, king of endless glory! No one lives on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, king of endless glory! What Jesus confronts in the wilderness is a very common human experience of self-doubt. It is one thing to have a powerful sense of call, or invitation or sense of God’s presence, but when the moment passes then doubt sets in. Was it real? Did it really happen? Why would God enter my life? In the spiritual life, the temptation to doubt frequently follows a powerful experience of God. LENT: A TIME FOR FASTING This aspect of Lent invites us, through some form of fasting and self denial, to deepen our dependence on God – to become less self-centred and more othercentred. Look at the words the tempter says to Jesus – ‘If you are the Son of God... turn stones to bread; if you are the Son of God throw yourself down.’ If you are Son. These are the very words at the heart of the Baptismal experience – ‘This is my Son’. This then becomes the real temptation – to doubt God’s power that Jesus has just experienced. This is true of Jesus and it is true of all who try to live a spiritual life – faith and doubt struggle within us. Mary Coloe pbvm PROJECT COMPASSION: WEEK 1, DINIA Living in the Philippines, Dinia struggled daily with poverty in a country with many vulnerable communities. People living in rural and coastal areas have very little access to basic services. They face extreme weather events, environmental degradation and the effects of internal conflict and have little hope of a sustainable income. For Dinia, the untimely death of her husband meant an end to his small income and a greater struggle to feed and educate her children. OUR THEME FOR LENT Our Lenten theme this year is simply ‘hunger and thirst’. These words appear in our readings throughout Lent and illustrate the deep longing of the human heart for the peace and hope that only God can give. Ultimately we find in Jesus Christ the answer to our spiritual hunger and thirst. OUR LENT/EASTER ICON The image on the front of the altar will accompany us throughout our Lent/Easter season. It is from an ancient mosaic at Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey. We will prayerfully focus on this image of Christ, who truly quenches our deepest hunger and thirst. LENT: A TIME FOR PRAYER During Lent we are called to allow extra time for prayer, to listen for God’s presence in our lives. What extra time can I spend in prayer during these days of Lent? Perhaps I can: Come to weekday Mass Spend some time in prayer at home Come to the Stations of the Cross—on Tuesdays or Fridays Come to Taize Prayer on 21 or 28 March Join a Lenten Reflection Group Join the Christian meditation or Centering Prayer groups for Lent LENT: A TIME FOR ALMSGIVING On the church table is this year’s Project Compassion material, with the boxes and sharepacks. Please take a box home! This offers a real way to respond to the Lenten call to almsgiving. This annual Lenten Appeal funds the continuing work of Caritas Australia in many parts of the world. She struggled alone, facing a future without hope, until her community encouraged her to participate in a program supported by Caritas Australia. She was able to learn about organic farming, managing livestock, and starting a small business. Now she has an integral role in her community, a sustainable livelihood, and a brighter future for her children. “My life is much better now. It is much easier,” she says. “I have a feeling of contentment, being able to help others." LENTEN REFLECTION GROUPS 1. A THANK YOU LETTER FROM THE SEMINARY This past week, Fr Michael received the following letter from Corpus Christi Seminary: Dear Fr Michael and parishioners, On behalf of the staff of Corpus Christi College, I would like to thank you and the people of your parish for the welcome, assistance and opportunities for engagement you provided for Trac Nguyen during his Pastoral Placement with you. It goes without saying how important the experience of life in parish is in the formation of a seminarian and its place in helping him discern if this is the life for him. Your comments – written and spoken – on the students are very much valued. I hope Trac’s time in your parish was a blessing for you, as it was for him, in discovering what it means to serve the Lord in the midst of his people. Please pass on the Seminary’s thanks to all those who supported and worked with him during his time with you. Every blessing, Fr Denis Stanley, Rector. ITALIAN FILM Sr Marjetka will be screening an Italian film this Wednesday 8 March at 2.00pm in St Ambrose’s Community Centre. All Italianspeaking parishioners are warmly invited to attend. THEOLOGY AT THE PUB Topic: ‘Youth, Vocation and the future of the Church’. Monday 6 March. Dinner and drinks from 6.30pm. Talk commences at 7.30pm. European Bier Cafe, Level 1, 120 Exhibition Street, Melbourne. Bishop Richard Umbers will reflect on the challenges and opportunities facing the young Church in Australia. Details: www.facebook.com/tapmelb/. AWARENESS OF MODERN-DAY SLAVERY In 2015, Pope Francis said that “every person ought to have the awareness that purchasing is always a moral – and not simply an economic – act.” Cocoa is a key ingredient of chocolate. Much of the chocolate sold in Australia is made using cocoa beans picked by children, many of whom have been enslaved, or forced to work in exploitative conditions. To buy slavery-free Easter chocolate look for any of these three certification symbols on the wrappers: Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance and UTZ. WHEN IRISH EYES ARE SMILING!
