The Catholic Parish of Brunswick and Brunswick East 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C 23 October 2016 SUNDAY MASS TIMES RESPONSORIAL PSALM Our Lady’s The Lord hears the cry of the poor. St Ambrose’s 6.00pm Saturday Vigil 9.00am Sunday (Italian/English) 10.30am Sunday WEEKDAY MASSES UN PO' DI STORIA Sebastian Danelli sposò Harriet Bagatti nella Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio a Milano nel 1858. L'anno successivo emigrarono a Brunswick, Australia. Our Lady’s St Ambrose’s Tues and Wednesday at 9.15am Thursday to Saturday at 10.00am DONAZIONI PER LA LOTTERIA DI NATALE Grazie a tutti i parrocchiani che hanno portato fatto donazioni per la nostra lotteria di Natale. RECONCILIATION St Ambrose’s Our Lady’s 10.30am Saturday 11.30am Saturday MARRIAGES AND BAPTISMS by appointment PARISH PRIEST I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise always on my lips; in the Lord my soul shall make its boast. The humble shall hear and be glad. The Lord turns his face against the wicked to destroy their remembrance from the earth. The just call and the Lord hears and rescues them in all their distress. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted; those whose spirit is crushed he will save. The Lord ransoms the souls of his servants. Those who hide in him shall not be condemned. God was in Christ, to reconcile the world to himself; and the Good News of reconciliation he has entrusted to us. Alleluia! EUCHARISTIC PRAYER III RECENTLY DECEASED Francesco Trimboli of Blyth Street, Gaetano Ensabella of Blyth Street, Ma Pione ANNIVERSARIES Salvatore and Maria Toddaro, Anthony Murray THE HUMBLE ARE EXALTED This week’s gospel passage flows on directly from last week’s gospel and continues the teaching of Jesus about prayer. Whereas the preceding passage emphasised the need for persistence in prayer, this passage is about the way in which we come before God in prayer. It is the tax collector, whose simple prayer is ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner,’ who goes home at rights with God. In this simple prayer, the tax collector recognises that he is not in right relationship with God and asks for God’s mercy. This is a hallmark of the lowly and outcast in the gospel of Luke: they recognise their need and seek God’s forgiveness and mercy. The model of faith that is depicted over and over again in this gospel is the one who recognises his or her need for God’s loving mercy and asks for it. We are repeatedly reminded that God’s mercy, forgiveness and abundant love are constantly outflowing towards us and all we have to do is humbly desire and welcome them. Humility is at the heart of this parable. The Pharisee is representative of those who are assured of their own rightness but who rely on comparison with others to make themselves feel righteous and justified. The actions of this man were not limited to Pharisees alone, nor are they limited to a particular time and place. This man’s attitude of asserting his own faithfulness and religious observance by comparison with others can be easily seen in the world today. All faiths seem to be afflicted with these characters who assure themselves of their own ‘goodness’ by railing against those who are different. But, as the parable assures us, it is the humble who are exalted by God. Greg Sunter CATHOLIC MISSION SUNDAY Through its partnership with Mercy Works, Catholic Mission supports community leaders like Steven Dude in Papua New Guinea to engage with their communities and be ‘instruments of peace’, so they can find consolation, understanding and love, and heal the wounds caused by domestic violence. By supporting the Catholic Mission appeal today you are helping community leaders in PNG receive training so they can advocate for their communities and allow them to find peace through mercy. MAY OUR CHILDREN FLOURISH All parishes are required by the Victorian Government to publish a ‘Child Safety Code of Conduct’ for their parish by 1 January 2017. The Archdiocese of Melbourne has published a document, ‘May Our Children Flourish’, and there are templates to assist parishes in preparing their Code of Conduct. Copies are available in the sacristy today, for anyone who is interested in reading it and offering suggestions. After the 10.30am Mass today, there will be a meeting of Children’s Liturgy Leaders and parents to discuss their ideas and suggestions for the Child Safety Code of Conduct. Francesca Mercuri and Rod Wilson will lead the discussion. These suggestions will contribute to our drafting of our parish’s Code of Conduct. DONATIONS FOR CHRISTMAS RAFFLE Thank you to all parishioners who have brought along donations for our Christmas raffle. We are preparing a large Christmas stocking and we need donations to make this happen. Are you able to contribute any of the following for the ‘stocking’: new toys, games, Christmas decorations, small boxed gifts, gift vouchers, shortbread, nuts, bonbons, etc? There will be a box at the back of the church each weekend during October to collect the donations. Thanks again for your ongoing generosity! OUR TABLE TENNIS CHAMPION! Sr Marjetka proved to be too good for Trac in last Sunday’s table tennis tournament. Congratulations to you, Sr Marjetka! You are a worthy winner of our parish championship. The table-tennis table is still in St Ambrose’s Community Centre for anyone who would like to try their skill after the 10.30am Mass today. Perhaps you would like to challenge Trac! All welcome after Mass today. RCIA INQUIRY NIGHT Do you know anyone who might be thinking of becoming a Catholic? This Thursday 27 October at 7.00pm (please note change of time) we will be holding an Inquiry night in St Ambrose’s Community Centre for all adults who are seeking to be baptised or to be brought into full communion with the Catholic Church. MONEY COUNTERS Thanks to those who have volunteered to help count the Sunday collections. Next Sunday 30 October, there will be an information session in St Ambrose’s Parish House at 9.15am – prior to the 10.30am Mass. THE FENCES ARE GONE! On Saturday of last week, a working bee of Our Lady’s School parents removed the fences at the rear of the house at 1 Barkly Street. This is the land that we have purchased for an extended school playground. Work will need to be done now to turn the area into a good playground area for the children. It is a great acquisition for the parish School. MEETING FOR THE PARISH VOICE There will be a meeting in St Ambrose’s Parish House this Wednesday 26 October at 4.30pm to plan the next edition of our parish magazine, The Parish Voice. All are welcome to bring along their ideas. CHRISTIAN MEDITATION AT OUR LADY'S There is Christian meditation on Monday mornings 9.30–10.15am and Wednesday evenings 8.00–8.45pm in the Community Meeting Room behind Our Lady’s Parish House. It involves listening to a brief talk or reading, followed by silent meditation. It is suitable for all ages, explores the contemplative, and enriches the heart. Further details: Contact Bruno on 9381 1383. FOR THE ITALIAN PARISHIONERS Next Tuesday 25 October after the 10.00 Communion Service, we will pray Morning Prayer in St Ambrose’s Church. Next Thursday 27 October, after the 9.15 Communion Service, we will pray Morning Prayer in Our Lady’s Church. FILM AFTERNOON Next Sunday 30 October at 4.00pm in St Ambrose’s Community Centre there will be a screening of the documentary film, Chasing Asylum. This film examines the human impact of Australia’s offshore detention of asylum seekers. It is highly recommended viewing for all those concerned about basic human rights. All are welcome! There will be drinks and pizza to share after the film. MASS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DIED On All Soul’s Day, Wednesday 2 November, there will be Mass at the Northern Memorial Park, Fawkner. All are welcome to attend and pray for dearly departed family and friends. The Mass will be at 5.00pm at the Commemoration Centre, Fawkner Cemetery. Entry via Box Forrest Road. MELBOURNE CATHOLIC The October edition of Melbourne Catholic is still available on the church table for $4. If you haven’t already purchased a copy, you can do so today! A BIT OF HISTORY Sebastian Danelli married Harriet Bagatti at St Ambrose’s in Milan in 1858. The next year they emigrated to Brunswick, Australia. Their children were all born here. Sebastian set up a factory in Sydney Road which made macaroni and vermicelli. (The factory was on the site of the present Don Bosco Centre.) The interesting thing is that, when a new Catholic church was being planned for Brunswick in the mid1860s, it was Sebastian who suggested the name St Ambrose after the great cathedral in Milan which he knew so well. PARISH PRAYER FOCUS FOR OCTOBER We pray for an inclusive society where all people may experience belonging. May we truly love one another.
