RECONCILIATION St Ambrose’s Our Lady’s 10.30am Saturday 11.30am Saturday MARRIAGES AND BAPTISMS by appointment PARISH PRIEST Fr Michael Casey PASTORAL ASSOCIATES Sr Diane Cleveland and Sr Marjetka Žlahtič My soul, give thanks to the Lord, all my being, bless his holy name. My soul, give thanks to the Lord and never forget all his blessings. It is he who forgives all your guilt, who heals every one of your ills, who redeems your life from the grave, who crowns you with love and compassion. The Lord is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy. He does not treat us according to our sins nor repay us according to our faults. As far as the east is from the west so far does he remove our sins. As a father has compassion on his children, the Lord has pity on those who fear him. Whoever keeps the word of Christ, grows perfect in the love of God. Alleluia! EUCHARISTIC PRAYER II RECENTLY DECEASED Bob Hamilton, Sr Carol Pedersen RSC ANNIVERSARIES Salvatore De Nino, Craig Paley, Christopher Banon THE GRACE OF FORGIVENESS Matthew’s Gospel continues Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, where, like Moses, Jesus teaches the community his code of behaviour. What he teaches sounds impossible, but it is what he lived and what some others have also been capable of living. Occasionally, in the midst of terrible wars and atrocities, we hear of people who have been able to rise above their own suffering and rage, to find in themselves the ability, the grace, of forgiveness. Such people speak of being determined not to let others control their lives and that in being able to forgive they find their own integrity and freedom. They become whole. from Our Lady’s School, to bless the work of the school throughout the coming year. When Matthew says, ‘Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect’, I think this means something like being a whole person. The Greek word used here is ‘telos’ and it has the sense of completion, of being whole, of having arrived at the end. MEETING REMINDERS The Bethany House Committee meets this Wednesday 22 February at 5.30pm in St Ambrose’s Parish House. With this is mind, Jesus’ code of behaviour calls us to be whole people, and this is how we can also be holy people. Mary Coloe PBVM THE RITE OF WELCOME At the 10.30am Mass this weekend we will have the Rite of Welcome during which all the candidates in the RCIA program will be blessed and welcomed by our parish community. From then on they will officially be Catechumens in the RCIA program. We particularly thank our parish sponsors who have taken on the responsibility of supporting and accompanying the catechumens on their journey of faith. MASS FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR This Tuesday 21 February at 9.15am there will be the annual Mass at Our Lady’s to celebrate the beginning of the new school year. All are welcome to attend this Mass, along with all the students and teachers ROSTERS AVAILABLE TODAY The new rosters are all available today. Remember to collect your roster from the church table if you are a lector, communion minister, children’s liturgy leader, ‘cuppa’ organiser or welcomer. A sincere thanks to all who have generously volunteered to actively participate in the liturgical life of the parish through these important ministries. The rosters will run until the end of August. There will then be an opportunity for others to join a new roster beginning in September. The Parish Leadership Team will have their first meeting for the year in Our Lady’s Parish House on Wednesday 22 February at 7.00pm. BAPTISM PREPARATION This Thursday 23 February at 6.30pm there will be a Baptism preparation meeting and meal in St Ambrose’s Community Centre for all parents whose children will be baptised in the parish over the coming weeks. CRAFT GROUP There will be a special gathering of the Craft group this Friday 24 February, 11.00am – 12.30pm in St Ambrose’s Community Centre. Bobby and Kay have had a good idea for a Mother’s Day gift for our parishioners and it will require some preparation time. Also, we need to make some stoles for our Confirmation candidates. If you can help with either of these ‘crafty’ projects, please come along and lend a hand (or just come along and chat!). We will have at least one other Craft Group gathering before the end of term. SUPPORT FOR SYRIAN CHRISTIANS The Australian Syrian Charity is now established on the upper floor of St Ambrose’s Community Centre. This is a support centre for Syrian refugees. Two rooms are being used for English ‘conversation’ classes. There is also counselling support for both children and adults. On Friday evenings there will be band practice. We look forward to hearing their music sometime! MASS IN ARABIC EVERY 1ST SATURDAY On the first Saturday of every month, from Saturday 4 March, Fr Samir Haddad will be celebrating Mass in Arabic in St Ambrose’s church. Each month the program will be: 6.00 – 6.20pm Prayer for peace in the Middle East, with hymns in Arabic 6.20 – 7.00pm Mass in Arabic 7.00 – 8.00pm Gathering/supper in the Australian Syrian Charity (ASC) Centre on the upper floor of St Ambrose’s Community Centre. All are warmly invited to attend, particularly on the first week, as a sign of our welcome and hospitality for the refugees from Syria. SYDNEY ROAD STREET PARTY The Sydney Road Street Party will be on Sunday 5 March from 12 noon. We will have a craft stall on the street and there will be amusements in St Ambrose’s church grounds. If you are able to spend some time serving on the craft stall please give your name to Bobby Hardstaff or Fr Michael after Mass today. FOR OUR ITALIAN PARISHIONERS On Tuesday 21 February there will be gentle gymnastics with Sr Marjetka in St Ambrose’s Community Centre after the 10.00am Communion Service. On Wednesday 22 February, after the 9.15am Mass, there will be a meeting in the sacristy at Our Lady’s for the Ministers of Communion to the Sick. On Thursday 23 February there will be the Prayer of the Church at Our Lady’s following the 9.15am Communion Service. TAIZE PRAYER DURING LENT DATES FOR YOUR DIARY: There will be two evenings (in the spirituality room) during Lent when there will be the opportunity to pray contemplatively in the Taize tradition. This style of prayer makes use of icons, candles, quiet musical chant, readings and silence. Keep the evenings of 21 and 28 March free! The time of prayer will likely be 7.00 – 7.45pm (but we are open to changing the time to suit parishioners, especially families). PARISH PRAYER FOCUS FOR FEBRUARY We pray for all young people. May they experience belonging, respect and hope for the future. A HYMN OF HEALING FOR THE CHURCH Here we stand in silent witness to the Church we love and name. Hearing pleas of children’s voices, for our part in sin and shame. Father we have hurt so deeply; trust betrayed, dark secrets kept. Now the truth cries out in daylight. Tears of old, now freely wept. Stir in us a deep compassion, firm resolve to heal the past. Help us understand the darkness, lest again it comes to pass. Lord, we pray for those so wounded, hear the cry of victims’ pain. Help us seek the path of justice. Help us see the light again. Finding hope in Jesus’ promise, ‘I am with you. Do not fear.’ Striving on through storm and struggle, knowing still our God is near. Loving God, your mercy send and, like the fires that rake this land, May new life in wondrous colour, through the ashes bloom again.
