September 1712 in Son Francesco dello Vigno erwahnenswert. A f f i darstellen. Dos Repertoire 10 Antonio Vivaldi The M u s i c a l N o t e b o o k o f Anna M a r i a d a l Violin S i x V i o l i n Concertos She has a golden heart locking in duplicity, Which is faithful, grateful and loving; She is very beautiful, but her beauty Does not turn her heod. But here, leading the way Like the leader of a platoon, Comes the clever Anna Maria, True incarnation of goodness and beauty. She has fair hair, rosy cheeks, A snow white breast, fiery eyes and Noble features; her character is vivacious in Serious matters as in jest. She ploys the violin in such o way That anyone hearing her is transposed to Paradise, If indeed it is true thot up there The angels played like that. But I'll say no more, because you might Believe me to be in love with her, And in that you would perhaps not be Very far from the truth. Equally good ore her bow arm And her arm over the fingerboard: Her equal is not to be found In the state of Son Morco. Forget l said thot And let's return to the point. Damnotionl ... Next comes ... comes Who comes? I'm confused. Translated by Michael Talbot ... Indeed, in the whole world N o woman or man is her equal: I do not exaggerate; and I speak the truth As a man of honor. This singular portrait of Anna Maria is from an anonymous little poem of 1730 entitled rSopra le putte dello Pietd d i cor0.a Joachim Christoph Nemeitz, on visiting Italy in 1721, wrote of >>Anno Maria, who has few peers among the members of her sex as a player of this very difficult and delicate instrument.^ The brilliant Venetian female violinist was then also mentioned b y Johonn Gottfried Walther in his Musicolisches Lexicon of 1732 and by Baron Carl Ludwig von Poellnitz, who during his trip to Venice in 1730 designated her as nthe premier violinist of 1toly.n The few biographical details known to us about Anna Maria derive almost entirely from the registers of the Ospedole doll Pieth. Born in 1696, she was received into the choro on August 23, What professional musician Plays as she does the harpsichord, violin Cello, viola d'amore, Lute, theorbo and mandolin? In truth, these are virtues That immortalize whoever possesses them; But she has even more of them As I om here to bear witness. 1 investment for a girl of o mere sixteen! Another violin built especially for her wos acquired from the workshop of Nicolo Selles in 1720. The purchase of a theorbe from Cristoforo Selles for Anna Moria is ottested in the registers of 1732. The role of the ospedoli in Venice has been and still is often poorly described and even more poorly understood. A total of four ospedoli were active in the eighteenth century: institutions with diverse functions that nevertheless had in common the tutelage of persons from the most disadvantaged ranks of society. Music was really the only common element shored by all of them! The Ospedoletto was reserved for orphans, while the Ospedale dei Mendiconti, which was also the largest of the four ospedali, occupied itself with soldiers wounded in action, nobles without sufficient means of support, and above all mendicants and the homeless. These two institutions were near one another and situated in the vicinity of the Chieso dei SS. Giovonni e Poolo. As its name itself suggests, the Ospedole degli Incurabili, which was locoted ot the Zattere opposite the Chiesa del Redentore, was dedicated to persons with incurable illnesses. La Pietb, situated more or less halfway between the Palazzo Ducale and the Arsenole, has from time to time erroneously been described as an orphanage, o convent, or a music school for girls. In reality it was an institution dedicated to the core and training of abandoned or unwanted children. The children concerned were abandoned for many different reasons: the poverty of the families to which they had been born, the mother's death during the birth, and the abandonment of wives on the part of members of the military sewing in the army or navy. However, the category that by far was the most significant was that of illegitimate children, born as a result of 1720. She was already a figlio privilegiofo [a uprivileged daughter,# as the girls admitted to the choro were termed) authorized to teach beginning on February 14, 1721. Subsequently, she was named moesfro and moesfra di choro on August 30, 1737. This post did indeed mark the end of her career as a violin soloist; until the end of her life she exercised a post involving the coordination of the choro and numerous administrative responsibilities. She died of nfever and nervous consumption,^ after having been unable even to write her own name during the lost year of her life, on August 10, 1782. The concert in Son Francesco dello Vigno on September 22, 1712, merits special mention in the context of her performonces as a soloist. As a teacher at the Pietb, she had internal pupils such as Anna Moria II, Bernardino, Fortunato, and Santina and figlie in educozione [young girls from well-to-do families of the city who were allowed to study os internal pupils at the institution) such as Chiara Barbmigo, Elena David, and Lodovico Emo. It is obundontly evident that Vivaldi recognized Anna Maria's talent immediately on the assumption of his duties at the Pietd (17031, even though the rules of the institution stipulated that instrumental instruction was to be initiated only on the completion of the pupil's eleventh year. Through his teaching and his encouragement, he brought out the young girl's best qualities, writing for her some thirty concertos for violin and at least two for viola d'amore, as the acrostics M o r e and AMor found in the manuscripts of the Concertos RV 393 and RV 3 9 7 affectionately attest. Bruso, D'Aloy, and Tartini also composed some concertos for the young but alreody famous virtuoso. An expenditure of the Pietb reveals that in 1712 Vivoldi spent twenty ducats for the acquisition of a violin for Anna Maria! A considerable 12 most musicians, but they could olso be ossigned other tosks, including thot of the venerondo functioning as the dispensiero. All the decisions of general choracter ond concerning the girls of both groups were mode in a fundamentally democratic monner by the prior0 in office, who often was none other than o member of the group of the musicians. Executive decisions were referred to the governofori, o group of about thirty persons (comparable to today's boards of trustees), members of noble and rich Venetian families who as a rule met on Sunday afternoons. The other two posts of major importance, based on seniority, were those of the two moesire di choro, and under them, the two scrivane (actually employees who exercised tosks of responsibilih/). In 1745 Anna Moria, on reoching her fiftieth yeor, had already been moesira di choro ond maesira di violino for eight years. Although it may seem peculiar, during her entire life she never did any traveling at all. On the other hand, the rules of the Pietb were precise and strict: it was not only that iourneys were prohibited; the figlie were not permitted a t o l l to venture outside the Pietb except in the cose of illness, and exclusively with permission to receive treatment in the home of one of the governafori. Beginning in 1780 the registers demonstrate a decline in the institution's activities, which also shows that interest in music itself wos olso in steody decline. Moestra Giulia died in 1763 ond wos succeeded by Maestro Maria B e lognese, who lived to the age of ninety-one (longevity was anything but unusual of the institution). One important reason for the decline was surely the death of Anno Morio in 1782. Her death olso coincided with the end of the great musical period of the Pietb. The musical repertoire of the Pietb that has survived to the present day is in the Fondo amorous liaisons or casual encounters of which it was preferable not to give too much notice. A great many of the children were olso the offspring of prostitutes. The children were brought to the Pietb by their mothers or by another member of the family and left on the socalled scoffefio, o niche set in the colle (Venetian street), modified with the passage of time into a rotating wooden wheel; or they also might be found by o priest or kindhearted persons who thus soved them from certoin death. After having been d e livered to the ospedole, such children were ollowed to grow up in adoptive families in Venice or in the surrounding countryside until the completion of their sixth year. At this point they were brought back to the ospedole to initiate their life in the institution. The boys remained there until they were sixteen; during this period they were instructed in vorious trades so that they would be oble to find work as shoemokers, stone engrovers, cotton weavers or in other capocities when they left the ospedale. During the following yeors observers sent by the institutution closely supervised their employers in order to form on opinion of the treatment they were receiving and their living conditions in their new jobs. For the girls there were three possibilities. They could enter the convent [only a few, however, opted for the religious life), get married, or, as the majority of the girls did, reside indefinitely at the Pietb. Those who remained at the institution were divided into two groups, the figlie di comun ond the figlie di choro. The first were not musicions and exercised tasks such as sewing, embroidery, weoving of cotton and silk, ond cooking. For period of a few months these girls could olso be employed as s e ~ o n t soutside the institution in noble families; on their return to the Pietb they received the title of figlie d; riforno. The others were first and fore- 13 Esposti of the library of the Benedetto Marcello Conservotory in Venice. It primarily involves material intended for use in internal performances, extant in the form of orchestral parts and supplied by copyists of the very some ospedole. Many of the compositions, in particular some compositions b y Vivaldi, have not come down to us in complete form but only in the form of individual parts; it therefore has not been possible to reconstruct or edit new complete scores. The most important volume of this collection is certainly the one with Anna Maria's name on its cover, the socalled Quoderno Musicale di Anna Mario do1 Violin. It contoins only the principal violin port, the only port that has come down to us from among the thirty-one concerti, twenty-four of which bear the signature of the Prete Rosso (Vivaldi). This volume is probably to be doted to the mid-1720s, during the period of the greatest European glory and fome of the Venetian violinist Anna Mario. As far as Vivaldi's compositions are concerned, the volume contains five concertos known to us only from the part of the violin soloist [RV 772, RV 775, RV 771, RV 773, RV 774). Two of these concertos (RV 7 7 2 and RV 774) also prescribe a part for organ soloist. Four other concertos survive in versions that are not completely identical or have different movements (RV 2700. RV 2670. RV 21 30, RV 179a).With two exceptions, concertos also printed in contemporaneous editions are not present. This fact corroborates Vivaldi's clearly defined intention to produce a homogeneous and stylistically coherent repertoire in keeping with the taste of the public and the European market. Furthermore, such manuscript concertos ore always more difficult than those that were published: experimental and surprising for their variety of expressive solutions, they sometimes employ ornomenta- tions that even today may seem extravagant and even excessive. This is definitely the repertoire of a great soloist, one of rare difficulty, expressly intended for the demonstration the not common abilities of the former pupil Anna Maria and all the more greatly worthy of the most appreciated virtuoso of the most celebrated Venetion instrumental group at that time in the music01 chronicles of the whole of Europe. The more celebrotive Concertos na due chori. RV 5 8 1 and RV 582, the Concerto .con violini d'accordaturo diverson (tuning departing from the usual practice) RV 343, and the extraordinarily expressive and melodic vain of the central movement of the Concerto RV 3 8 7 attest abundantly to this fact (with the lost two being included on the present recording). Not all the concertos of the volume were composed expressly for Anna Maria, and the only one bearing a dedication to her is the Concerto RV 2 8 6 (which, by the way, is better known os the Concerto per la solennifd di S. lorenzo). In the initial allegro of the Concerto RV 3 8 7 the violins form an overlay and loy the foundation of an interchange of little second and third intervals replete with rapid ornament01 figures. It is from this sound complex, melancholy but on the whole serene, that the soloistic passages gradually toke shape. The suggestive ornamented melody of the soloist dominates the largo, which is distinguished by the ostinoto eighth accompaniment of the orchestral ensemble. This is rightly regarded as one of the most extraordinary cantabile pages in the whole of the Prete Rosso's repertoire. The concluding allegro, in ternary time, is morked by the incessant, captivating, and olmost anxious rhythmic circulation typified by the triplets presented by the tutti and developed in the solo port. 1 , I 1 The Concerto RV 343 merits mention for the uniqueness, within the whole of Vivaldi's concerto oeuvre, of the technique employed for the scordatura. This technique is usually reserved for the solo port alone, but here it is required of all the violin parts! The particular scordaturo employed (02-e3-a3-e4, the tonic or dominant of the principal key) enhances the outer movements in a speciol way, making for the production of grand effects of plenitude, which ore realized on the basis of the skillful exploitation of the resonances of the two low strings by means of arpeggios and clear rhythmic accentuations. By meons of difficult arpeggios and passages on two or three strings the soloist realizes a part aiming at o manifestly virtuoso effect. The Concerto RV 2 9 9 is astonishing already beginning with the introduction of the initial allegro, which is entrusted to the principal solo violin and does without any orchestral accompaniment. This inversion of the formal order leads back to the ritornello, which is connoted as the logical consequence of the initial idea. The second movement ond in part the third movement also exist in a chamber version as the Sonata RV 755 (Manchester Manuscript). The lost allegro, however, is amplified here and includes a more demanding part entrusted to the violin soloist but without any relation to the initial ritornello and probably added at a later time. The instrumental ritornello of the allegro opening the Concerto RV 3 4 9 is structured in contrasting sections characterizing the affects by means of a particular rhythmic figuration. The descending scales leod- rhyihm is followed by a dactylic rhythm in the measures preceding the first entry of the violin soloist. The central largo is wonderfully beautiful and of o dreomy and simple lyricism (with a rhythmic insert recalling Vivaldi's rgreatest hitsu). The concluding Allegro ma poco is distinguished by the rhythmic uniformity of the tutti, with a character thot is vaguely rustic and popular. The weolth of the solutions proposed by the soloist forms a great contrast to this, until things finally come to a surprising superimposition of both elements. The Concerto RV 248 stands out for its obsessive melancholy charocterizotion, rendered explicit by the accentuation and repetition of the orchestral ritornello in the initial allegro. The second movement is of notable dramatic impact; it is founded on the olternation of many passages of greatly diversified character in a sequence of slow and extremely fast episodes. The Concerto RV 366 is also known as the concerto ndetto il Carbonelli~owing to the title present on the frontispiece of the version preserved in Dresden. This title probably owes not to Vivaldi but to Johann Georg Pisendel, who redacted the German copy. Giovanni Stefano Carbonelli was a celebrated and just as mysterious violinist, perhaps o pupil of Corelli; around 1720 he moved to London, where he became one of the most famous violin virtuosos. The motives that might have led to this type of title, however, are not clear; elsewhere it was not Vivoldi's practice to resort to such dedicatory labeling. Since the Quaderno di Anna Mario consists only of the principal violin part, in order to execute these pieces we undertook o precise comporison with the other existing sources for every concerto. Fortunately, the Fondo Giordano of Turin has in its holdings other complete versions of all the orchestral material of the ing to a general rest and the successive repetition of the piano of the same element yield to a rhythm of more bellicose character, articulated with rapid repeated notes and syncopated accentuations. This 1 1 Federico Guglielmo frequently works with moior period instruments orchestras worldwide and is currently Professor of String Ensemble Performance and Baroque Violin at the Umberto Giordano Conservatory in Foggia. A monurcript of the Concerto RV 3 4 9 is extant in Manchester.
