La stanza di Gretel era cambiata dall’ultima volta che vi aveva messo piede. Per prima cosa
c’era una sola bambola in vista. Un pomeriggio, all’incirca un mese prima - quando il tenente
Kotler aveva lasciato Auscit - Gretel aveva deciso che le sue bambole non le piacevano più, così le
aveva messe tutte in quattro sacchi enormi e le aveva gettate via. Al loro posto aveva appeso delle
mappe dell’Europa datele dal padre. Ogni giorno le infilzava con alcune puntine e dopo aver letto il
giornale le spostava. Bruno pensò che la sorella stesse diventando matta. Però, visto che non lo
stuzzicava e non lo tiranneggiava più come prima, credette che non gli sarebbe successo niente se
avesse discusso con lei del suo problema.
Gretel's room had changed quite considerably since
the last time he had been there. For one thing there
wasn't a single doll in sight. One afternoon a month or
so earlier, around the time that Lieutenant Kotler had
left Out-With, Gretel had decided that she didn't like
dolls any more and had put them all into four large bags
and thrown them away. In their place she had hung up
maps of Europe that Father had given her, and every
day she put little pins into them and moved the pins
around constantly after consulting the daily newspaper.
Bruno thought she might be going mad. But still, she
didn't tease him or bully him as much as she used to, so
he thought there could be no harm in talking to her.

Gretel stava chiusa nella sua camera senza le sue bambole concentrandosi sulle mappe che
aveva appeso al muro. Consultava i giornali per ore prima di spostare un po’ le puntine. (Herr Liszt
era particolarmente compiaciuto di questa sua attività.)
Gretel stayed in her
room concentrating on the various maps she had pasted
on the walls and consulting the newspapers for hours at
a time before moving the pins around a little. (Herr
Liszt was particularly pleased with her for doing this.)

Gretel tornò a Berlino con la madre e rimase a lungo da sola nella sua stanza a piangere, non
perché aveva gettato via tutte le bambole, e neppure perché aveva lasciato ad Auscit tutte le mappe,
ma perché Bruno le mancava da morire.
Gretel returned to Berlin with Mother and spent a lot
of time alone in her room crying, not because she had
thrown her dolls away and not because she had left all
her maps behind at Out-With, but because she missed
Bruno so much.
