Corso avanzato di lingua inglese per urbanisti ed architetti
Il corso è organizzato dalla Fondazione Astengo e dalla Sezione Emilia-Romagna e verterà sull’acquisizione di
competenze linguistiche avanzate, utili a lavorare in contesti internazionali. Si compone di una prima breve fase di
allineamento delle competenze linguistiche dell’aula attraverso lezioni avanzate di grammatica e vocabolario, e di una
seconda fase mirata ad acquisire competenze linguistiche utilizzabili in un contesto professionale nel campo
dell’urbanistica e della progettazione. In particolare, verrà praticato un vocabolario specialistico fondamentalmente
suddiviso in due blocchi tematici:
- vocabolario tecnico, finalizzato alla comprensione del significato della terminologia urbanistica anche in riferimento
ai diversi contesti territoriali e normativi;
- vocabolario giuridico, finalizzato ad interpretare correttamente bandi internazionali per la partecipazione a gare.
Specifiche lezioni saranno orientate all’analisi e alla discussione in aula di: letteratura specializzata ed articoli tecnici;
bandi di gara internazionali; documenti di progettazione in lingua inglese. Ulteriori specifiche lezioni saranno
dedicate a: predisposizione di cv; impostazione di intervista lavorativa; predisposizione di lettere di intenti;
predisposizione di abstract sulla base di testi tecnici. Infine, verranno curate le capacità di esposizione orale in
contesti tecnici attraverso la pratica di speech brevi da tenersi in occasione di riunioni, seminari e/o convegni e la
predisposizione ed esposizione di presentazioni di progetti.

Objective
This course is designed to give Urban Planners and Architects a refined set of skills and practices to write, present,
and discuss matters of urban planning on an international level. As such, the course focuses on 3 main areas: 1Grammar and Vocabulary, 2- Reading and Writing, and 3- Speaking and Listening.
All three areas engage students from within the context of Urban Planning and Architecture so as to immediately
connect classroom to career. To achieve the course’s pedagogical objective, parts 2 and 3 simulate professional
activities by following the process and tasks required for applying to an actual English language project proposal, and
its subsequent presentation.
Content
1- To ensure a fundamental understanding of grammar and vocabulary, we will review present, past and future
tenses, with particular emphasis given to the planning tense--future.
Vocabulary will be a consistent focus throughout the entire course, and will come from grammar lessons,
discussions, readings and presentations. Technical vocabulary and trending terms within the fields of urban
planning and architecture will be given special attention, along with emphasis on idioms and phrasal verbs.
Students will help compile the second edition of INU’s English-Italian dictionary for Urban Planners and Architects,
and receive their very own copy of the dictionary they helped create.
2- To ensure professional proficiency in reading and writing, we will read, translate, discuss and respond to content
from the sixth edition of the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) call for proposals. Additionally,
we will reference articles, journals, and case studies related to the topics presented by IABR as secondary sources for
reading and writing.
Students will focus on writing CVs, letters of intent, abstracts and proposals, all in accordance with IABR 2014 call for
projects and the American Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture call for abstracts.
3- To ensure professional proficiency in speaking and listening students will reference techniques taught at Alma
Graduate School of Management’s International MBA program to carry out daily discussions, student lectures,
debates, and the end-of-the-year class conference (can invite architecture and environmental engineering (Unibo’s
English program) students to mini-conference-asking and fielding questions).
Teaching Methods:
Activity based - Recursion based
The course achieves its learning objectives by offering activities and content for reading, writing, listening and
speaking that simulates professional demands. The course’s recursive structure allows students to repeatedly
practice previous learnings in real world scenarios, and encompasses the following elements:
- Interactive lessons by instructor
- Group work and student presentations on a selected case, particular readings or assigned themes
- Class discussions on readings or related topics of interest
- Individual case/article reflection note
- Class viewings of videos specifically designed to reinforce discussion themes and enhance pronunciation in the
context of professional discourse
- Individual and group role play
- Language games
- Writing workshop for career and class material (peer review)
- IABR project work (group)
