IV International Seminar of Liturgical Music - Religious popular songs in Italy and Europe
Organization: Diocesan School of Sacred Music "D. Caifa" and CremonaFiere in

Institute of Sacred Music - Trento
Liturgical music is one of many components of Italian music, and for this reason
the States General of Music could not do without such an important feature. It is
a fascinating industry with a strong tradition that gave birth, over the centuries,
to extraordinary compositions. A repertoire of "popular religious songs" emerges on several occasions over
the centuries - from medieval hymns to songs of the early 20th century - in parallel with the official
repertoire of the Church, which is the Gregorian chant and sacred polyphony.
This repertoire is an expression of different needs: the will of the people to make their own contribution,
simple and spontaneous, to the performance of the rites; the concern of some enlightened pastor to help
the people clearly understand the mysteries of faith in their own language; the innate need - by the people
and men of culture - to create simple forms of art that matched culture (the theological concept, the
musical phrase, rhyme, versification) with popular (the easy divulgation), and education (evangelization
through music). Therefore, the so-called "popular" phenomenon of the religious songs can be seen through
different angles sharing a common "training" aspect. Through the “popular” religious songs, in fact, the
people are educated wisely through the singing, the poetic language and the fundamental concepts of the
Christian faith.The phenomenon of popular religious songs crosses European culture through every age and
country. In Italy, the moment of greatest growth was in the period 1850-1950, so much that even in the
Church documents it was given clear official support.

The Conference of Directors of the Conservatories and the Higher Institutes for Musical Studies is a great
opportunity for the States General of Music to meet. It is held for the third year in Cremona, and it is
essential to explore the different topics related to the teaching of Italian music, and organizing strategies
for educational courses to meet international standards.
The Conference, created in 1999, has an important function as a link between the Administration and the
Institutions, contributing significantly to a proper application of the regulation issued in accordance with
Law 508.

An essential component of the Italian World Music, students is one of the pillars of the States General of
Music. Founded in 2010, the National Conference of Students of the ISSM represents the needs of students
as its main goal. These needs are developed in common guidelines and proposed as units which are then
compared by a panel from the institutions.
The role of the Conference has received official recognition from the Ministry of Education, Universities and
Research.

Alberto Nosè gained his first recognition at the age of eleven, winning First Prize in the
Jugend für Mozart International Competition in Salzburg, thanks to which he held his first
concert tour around Italy, Austria and France. He went on to win prizes at prestigious
international piano competitions: Paloma O’Shea in Santander (1st Prize, Gold Medal and
Audience Pirze), F. Chopin in Warsaw (5th Prize in 2000), F. Busoni in Bolzano (2nd Prize
with particular distinction in 1999), Maj Lind in Helsinki (1st Prize in 2002), Long-Thibaud in
Paris (2nd Prize in 2004), Vendôme Prize in Parigi (1st Prize in 2000), World Piano
Competition in London (2nd Prize in 2002), L. Gante in Pordenone (1st Prize in 2002), Premio Venezia (1st
Prize unanimously in 1998). In 2011 he wins first prize at the Top of the World International Piano
Competition in Tromsø (Norway). From such affermations, an acclaimed career came out and took him to
perform throughout Europe and all over the world for important festivals and in prestigious concert halls.

He has performed in recital and chamber music with the Italian cellist Rocco Filippini, the Ysaÿe Quartet,
the Venetian Quartet, the violinist Fanny Clamagirand and the cellist Giorgi Kharadze, and as soloist with
the important orchestras. He collaborated with well-known conductors, such as Roy Goodman, Manfred
Honeck, Jesus Lopez-Cobos, Enrique Batiz, Anton Nanut, Hannu Lintu, James Judd, Marcus Bosch, Rumon
Gamba, George Hanson, Ion Marin, Josè Ferreira Lobo, Lewis Kaplan, Ola Rudner, Giancarlo De Lorenzo,
Alain Lombard, Enrique Mazzola, Thomas Søndergård.
He often helds masterclasses at Conservatories, Colleges, Institutes and International Music Festivals, such
as the Conservatory in Geneva, the Mannes College of Music in New York, the Bowdoin Festival in
Brunswick (Maine – USA) and in Japan.
In 2009, the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International assignes him the title of Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) to
career, “as a sign of appreciation and gratitude for his tangible value and meaningful contribution in
promoting a better mutual understanding and friendly relations among peoples around the world”.
He is regularly invited as jury member in important international piano competitions, like the F. Chopin in
Warsaw in 2010.

This consists of two eclectic musicians, both grew up artistically in the most
important Italian and international music institutions (the Academy of Imola,
the Academy of Music of Fiesole, the Chigiana Academy, the Conservatoire
National Superieur de Paris) and were supervised by the greatest masters in
their respective instruments such as Giuliano Carmignola, Pier Narciso Masi,
Felice Cusano, Maryvonne Ledizes, Pavel Berman, Bruno Canino, Paul Badura
Skoda. The duo Alogna-Boldrini performs regularly in the major concert halls
around the world.
Both are protagonists as soloists alongside prestigious international orchestras. These are the Tchaikovsky
National Philharmonic Orchestra, Kiev Philharmonic, the Symphony Orchestra of Monterrey Mexico, the
Ankara Baskent University Orchestra, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino to name just a few. Davide Alogna and
Davide Boldrini collaborate with several chamber groups and highly distinguished colleagues such as N.
Gutman, E. Virsaladze, R. Plano, L. Armellini, A. Bocelli, K. Ricciarelli, F. Mezzena, M. Laura, Young Chee Lee,
Jesus Medina and many others. The September issue of the magazine Amadeus has dedicated the CD cover
to the duo-Alogna Boldrini who represent the complete works of violin and piano by Franz Schubert.
Both have performed, as soloists, for important labels such as Brilliant Classic, Wide Classique Label,
Phoenix Classis, Sony and Velut Luna.

The Picco’s method of playing and improvising contributes significantly to the
excellence of international pianism. Tradition and Experimentation have the
same leading role in his music.
His creations and improvisations have always been the result of a personal
concept of music that rejects any limitations on style or inspiration. Cesare
Picco’s personal musical alphabet goes across different genres, bringing to his
listeners the freshness, the intensity and the power of a really strong pianism, a deep spiritual approach
and the lightness of captivating melodies.
His vast repertoire and real improvisations make each concert unique and unrepeatable. His concerts
retrace some of the defining moments in Picco’s artistic journey. Marrying the modernity of Bach with
Jazz’s classicism, Picco displays lightness and poetry in his music, as he travels through unusual roads driven
by his constant search for the purity and precision in music.
Cesare Picco started studying piano when he was four years old and from 1986 he started to perform his
own music. He is author to ballets, operas, music for theatre and special projects performed worldwide. He
has toured Germany, Spain, France, India, Singapore, Vietnam, and Japan.
He has worked with distinguished artists such as Naseer Shamma, Giovanni Hidalgo, Edmar Castaneda,
Nino Josele, Giovanni Sollima, Hajime Mizoguchi, Markus Stockhausen, Yukimi Nagano, Taketo Gohara, and
Italian artists such as Andrea Bocelli, Luciano Ligabue, Giorgia, Samuele Bersani, Pacifico.
In the theatrical field he has worked with Gioele Dix, Fabrizio Gifuni, Ascanio Celestini, Ottavia Piccolo,
Sergio Fantoni. Cesare has performed at Italy’s most important festivals: Ravello Festival, Sagra
Malatestiana, Umbria Jazz, Veneto Jazz, La Milanesiana, Lucca Summer Festival and abroad at Delhi Jazz
Festival, Tokyo Jazz Festival, Abu Dhabi Festival.
As a composer he has written music for solos, chamber music ensembles and orchestras.
In 1999 he wrote the children’s opera “Il Viaggio di Hans” inspired by Andersen’s tales. Between 1998 and
2004 he composed music for three ballets of Luciana Savignano and he performed piano solo with her at
Teatro La Scala of Milan.
Since 2006 his albums have been released in Japan and he quickly became famous touring the country
several times and collaborating with local artists and orchestras.
In 2009 he creates and performs the special show “Blind Date – Concert in the dark”, a live of pure
improvisation in which both artist and audience are soaked in the darkness.
He played world premiére in Milan (Teatro Smeraldo - sold out) and then the Tokyo’s Hara Museum of
Contemporary Art invites Cesare Picco for the Japanese premiére in September 2011 (two concerts sold
out). The show has been performed in Lugano, Rome and Florence as well.
In 2010 he enact the japanese romance “Tale of Genji”, for Piano and strings orchestra with the ensemble
“I Virtuosi Italiani”
“Hope at Sunrise”, the piece for piano and cello, dedicated to the victims of 11th March 2011, became in
June 2011 a special event in Tokyo rising fund for Red Cross Japan. Many Japanese artists join the project
playing together in three concerts at Blue Note Tokyo.

With her multi-faceted playing described as “dazzling”, Valentina Lisitsa is at
ease in a vast repertoire ranging from Bach and Mozart to Shostakovich and
Bernstein. Her orchestral repertoire alone includes more than forty concerti.
She admits to having a special affinity for the music of Rachmaninoff and
Beethoven and continues to add to her vast repertoire each season.
Valentina Lisitsa was born in Kiev, Ukraine and began playing the piano at the
age of three, performing her first solo recital a year later. She gained a place at
the Lysenko Music School for Gifted Children and later studied at the Kiev Conservatory under Ludmilla
Tsvierko. In 1991 she won the first prize in The Murray Dranoff Two Piano Competition together with Alexei
Kuznetsoff. She now resides in the USA.
With more than 30 million YouTube channel views, Valentina Lisitsa is one of the most watched classical
musicians on the Web, using digital innovation to champion classical music and performance. She has
performed in venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, and the Musikverein. In
May 2010, Valentina Lisitsa performed the Dutch premiere of Rachmaninoff’s “New 5th” Concerto in her
debut with the Rotterdam Philharmonic, and in August 2011 made her debut with the Orchestra Sinfonica
Brasileira under the baton of Maestro Lorin Maazel.
Valentina Lisitsa has recorded three independently-released DVDs, including her best-selling set of Chopin’s
24 Etudes. Her recording of the 4 sonatas for violin and piano by composer Charles Ives, made with Hahn,
was released in October 2011. In addition, Ms. Lisitsa has recently completed recordings of the complete
concerti of Rachmaninoff and Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with the London Symphony Orchestra
under conductor Michael Francis.
Her 11-12 season features debut performances with the Helsinki Philharmonic, the Colorado Symphony
and recitals at Ravinia, Festival of the Arts Boca, Teatro de Colon in Buenos Aires and the Casals Festival,
chamber engagements, and a solo recital in June 2012 at the Royal Albert Hall, London

Carlo Guaitoli studied at the Verona Conservatory with Loretta Turci and
went on to further his artistic development with Sergio Perticaroli at the
Academy of Santa Cecilia in Rome and the Mozarteum in Salzburg.
He gave his debut at a young age with the Arena Orchestra of Verona and
in 1992 won the "E. Porrino" International Competition in Cagliari,
embarking upon an intense concert career throughout Italy. In the
following years he established himself at an international level winning top prizes in some of the most
important world piano competitions: "A.Casagrande" in Terni, "International Music Competition of Japan"
in Tokyo, "F. Busoni" in Bolzano, "A. Rubinstein" in Tel Aviv, "City of Porto Music Competition" in Portugal,
and "Unisa International Music Competition" in Pretoria.
His concert engagements have brought him to perform in Europe, Japan, China, United States, Canada and
South Africa, where he has been a guest in many important music halls and festivals
He has appeared as soloist with prestigious orchestras, among which the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra,
Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Osaka Century Orchestra, Stuttgart
Philharmonic Orchestra, ….
As a chamber musician, he has collaborated with such acclaimed ensembles such as I Solisti della Scala,
Quintetto Bibiena, Nuovo Quartetto Italiano, and Quartetto d'archi della Scala.
Alongside his academic studies he has developed an interest for improvisation and for different
contemporary musical languages. He is currently Professor of Piano at the Conservatory in Terni and the
New York University in Florence and gives masterclasses in Italy, Japan, Canada, and South Africa.
Attilio Zanchi began studying double-bass in 1978 after devoting himself to various
music genres. He attended the Milano Conservatory Jazz courses for two years and
the Milano Council School of Music for three years. In 1980 and 1981 he
specialized with Dave Holland both in Canada at the “Banff School of fine arts” and
in the USA at the “ Woodstock Creative Music Studio”. Since his return to Italy, he
has been playing with the F. D’Andrea band, the Paolo Fresu Quintet and Tiziana
Ghiglioni, with whom he has also been on a world-wide tour and played in various
Jazz Festivals in USA, Canada, Australia, Africa, Russia and Europe. The well-known
American jazz players he has been on concerts and recording with include George Lewis, Sam Rivers, Jimmy
Giuffrè, Ed Blackwell, Lee Konitz, Kenny Wheeler, Jack de Johnette e John Abercrombie, Baikida Carrol,
Julius Hemphill, Ed Blackwell, Nana Vasconcellos, Collin Wallcot, Dewey Redman e Howard Johnson,
L.Konitz, T.Scott, Bud Freeman, G.Masso, ... Throughhout his carreer, he has recorded over 80 albums,
Another of his record, called “Some Other Place”, saw the cooperation of several musicians, including
Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor, George Garzone, Franco D’Andrea, Gianluigi Trovesi and many others.
Alongside his carreer as a musician, Attilio teaches at the Milano CPM School and holds seminars all over
