States General of Music - Focus: Education
This year Mondomusica Cremona Pianoforte present a great novelty: the States General of Music. A
unique, rich program presenting several events dedicated to various features from the world of the music
involving key note musicians, associations and institutions. These are currently providing Cremona with an
extraordinary artistic and cultural contribution.
Why the States General of Music?
Mondomusica and Cremona Pianoforte bring back all the components of the world of music, providing a
place to meet and exchange ideas with the goal of further developing the industry in both a commercial
and cultural world.
Why in Cremona?
Today Cremona, thanks to Mondomusica and Cremona Pianoforte, is a special place in Italy where one can
talk and discuss music in an open and professional way.
In over 12 years of activity in the industry, we have built up a network of international connections that
draws on the collaboration of hundreds of associations, institutions, conservatories, schools, key artists and
personalities of international renown, which every year bring to Cremona a high level of art and culture.
Mondomusica and Cremona Pianoforte therefore play a strategic role in the development of the entire
music world: they provide for the different needs of a very diverse sector, and develop ideas to ensure
musical culture can enjoy again the value and recognition that it deserves in Italy and Europe.
1
How we develop the first States General of Music
First of all, by engaging all the actors involved at various levels in the music industry:
• professional and amateur musicians
• schools and conservatories
• teachers and music students
• researchers
• festivals and competitions
• artistic agencies
• public and private institutions
• instrument makers
• distributors
• publishers
We have planned meetings in which all the actors will have the opportunity to express themselves, to
make suggestions and present ideas, discuss, establish business relations and collaborate.
Most of the meetings will be organized in the format of a discussion panel: a simple but engaging formula,
which allows the different institutions to deal directly with their interlocutors. In addition to these events,
each year there will be many concerts offered by Mondomusica and Cremona Pianoforte.
States General of Music, 2013: The Focus will be on Education
For the first year the States General of Music will focus on education, one of the most important topics for
the participants and which is linked to our hopes to develop the sector.
Understood in a broader sense, music education won’t be limited to teaching, but it will incorporate a 360°
vision: from applied research to the different professions related to the music, from international schools of
piano and strings to the artistic agencies. This represents a common thread that binds all the different
meetings of Mondomusica and Cremona Pianoforte and that represents a unique, extraordinary artistic and
cultural event.

Presentation - The automatic sound of the past: a project to recover the sound rollers for autopiano
Organization: Cremonafiere in collaboration with the University of Pavia, Department of Musicology and
Cultural Heritage
Speakers:
 Pietro Zappalà, Department of Musicology in Cremona, University of Pavia
 Flavio Pedrazzini, AMMI (Italian Mechanical Music Association)
One of the pillars of musical education is certainly the study and the recovery of
the past. In this sense, the States General of Music offer a retrospective on the
sound rollers for “autopiano”. Popular in the late 19th and early 20th century,
the “autopiano” represented an important tool to promote local music in both
public places and at home. The use of perforated rollers via a pneumatic
mechanism connected to the keyboard, secured a worldwide success for this
particular type of sound. This also created a thriving production of rollers
containing, in some cases, tracks and interpretations of great value. The most important Italian
manufacturer at the time was based in Cremona and over 1000 rollers of this production can be found at
the Department of Musicology in Cremona - University of Pavia that has catalogued and plans to digitalize
the repertoire with the most innovative technologies.

associations, cultural foundations, and musicologists

Concert - The guitar between the 19th and 20th century
Giulio Tampalini, guitar, Cinzia Milani, guitar
Organization: Amadeus
The world of the guitar is not so limited as the current discography
would have us believing.
Thanks to young performers such as Giulio Tampalini and Cinzia Milani
who present on this occasion their CDs published by Amadeus and
Amadeus / Rainbow, we realize that there is a lot of music produced
for this instrument that is waiting to be rediscovered.
Giulio Tampalini, winner of some of the major guitar competitions (the
San Remo, President of the Jury Narciso Yepes, the T.I.M. of Rome, the
"De Bonis" of Cosenza, the "Pittaluga" in Alessandria, the "Fernando
Sor" in Rome and the “Andrés Segovia" in Granada) held solo concerts
and accompanied by the symphony orchestras throughout Italy,
Europe, Asia and America. Tampalini runs a guitar course at the
Institute of Musical Studies "Orazio Vecchi" in Modena and is regularly invited to deliver master classes and
courses in Italy and abroad. He has published many CDs including two with Amadeus dedicated to Carulli
and Giuliani.
Cinzia Milani started to study guitar when she was very young at once revealing her talent for her
instrument and was awarded several prizes in Italy and abroad. Today, with her CD that she is presenting at
Mondomusica, she wants to stress the importance of the repertoire of the twentieth century that she is
actively discovering. Moreover, she urges composers to dedicate, with new works, more attention to her
instrument.

IV International Seminar of Liturgical Music - Religious popular songs in Italy and Europe
Organization: Diocesan School of Sacred Music "D. Caifa" and CremonaFiere in
collaboration with the Diocesan School "S. Cecilia" - Brescia and Diocesan
Institute of Sacred Music - Trento
Liturgical music is one of many components of Italian music, and for this reason
the States General of Music could not do without such an important feature. It is
a fascinating industry with a strong tradition that gave birth, over the centuries,
to extraordinary compositions. A repertoire of "popular religious songs" emerges on several occasions over
the centuries - from medieval hymns to songs of the early 20th century - in parallel with the official
repertoire of the Church, which is the Gregorian chant and sacred polyphony.
This repertoire is an expression of different needs: the will of the people to make their own contribution,
simple and spontaneous, to the performance of the rites; the concern of some enlightened pastor to help
the people clearly understand the mysteries of faith in their own language; the innate need - by the people
and men of culture - to create simple forms of art that matched culture (the theological concept, the
musical phrase, rhyme, versification) with popular (the easy divulgation), and education (evangelization
through music). Therefore, the so-called "popular" phenomenon of the religious songs can be seen through
different angles sharing a common "training" aspect. Through the “popular” religious songs, in fact, the
people are educated wisely through the singing, the poetic language and the fundamental concepts of the
Christian faith. The phenomenon of popular religious songs crosses European culture through every age and
country. In Italy, the moment of greatest growth was in the period 1850-1950, so much that even in the
Church documents it was given clear official support.

Presentation: New research technologies in the field of violin making.
Organization: Microtex and Tarisio Auctions
Musicians, collectors, violin makers, merchants, traders, museums, auction houses, all can benefit from the
use of the DISCOVERY CAM technology, an advanced Endoscopic Vision System expressly designed to
observe the inner parts of musical instruments, including violins, with high image resolution and without
any removal of strings or of other parts of the instrument. The accurate inspection of all components
provides a better evaluation of the wear conditions of the instrument, possibly revealing the need of
unexpected restoration, information about the original manufacturing technique, knowledge of possible
attribution errors, and sharp photographs of details, stamps and signatures.
The meeting being held to-day among instrument makers, restorers and suppliers, along with the
renowned TARISIO auction house, will show the inspection and study advantages of the non-invasive
DISCOVERY technology. The TARISIO Auction house will kindly provide an ancient instrument for this
purpose. By Microtex, Alessandro Tossani, violinmaker and Tarisio Auctions

Cesare Picco, piano
Organization: Yamaha Music Europe - Branch Italy
The Picco’s method of playing and improvising contributes significantly to the
excellence of international pianism. Tradition and Experimentation have the
same leading role in his music.
His creations and improvisations have always been the result of a personal
concept of music that rejects any limitations on style or inspiration. Cesare
Picco’s personal musical alphabet goes across different genres, bringing to his
listeners the freshness, the intensity and the power of a really strong pianism, a deep spiritual approach
and the lightness of captivating melodies.
His vast repertoire and real improvisations make each concert unique and unrepeatable. His concerts
retrace some of the defining moments in Picco’s artistic journey. Marrying the modernity of Bach with
Jazz’s classicism, Picco displays lightness and poetry in his music, as he travels through unusual roads driven
by his constant search for the purity and precision in music.
Cesare Picco started studying piano when he was four years old and from 1986 he started to perform his
own music. He is author to ballets, operas, music for theatre and special projects performed worldwide. He
has toured Germany, Spain, France, India, Singapore, Vietnam, and Japan.
He has worked with distinguished artists such as Naseer Shamma, Giovanni Hidalgo, Edmar Castaneda,
Nino Josele, Giovanni Sollima, Hajime Mizoguchi, Markus Stockhausen, Yukimi Nagano, Taketo Gohara, and
Italian artists such as Andrea Bocelli, Luciano Ligabue, Giorgia, Samuele Bersani, Pacifico.
In the theatrical field he has worked with Gioele Dix, Fabrizio Gifuni, Ascanio Celestini, Ottavia Piccolo,
Sergio Fantoni. Cesare has performed at Italy’s most important festivals: Ravello Festival, Sagra
Malatestiana, Umbria Jazz, Veneto Jazz, La Milanesiana, Lucca Summer Festival and abroad at Delhi Jazz
Festival, Tokyo Jazz Festival, Abu Dhabi Festival.
As a composer he has written music for solos, chamber music ensembles and orchestras.
In 1999 he wrote the children’s opera “Il Viaggio di Hans” inspired by Andersen’s tales. Between 1998 and
2004 he composed music for three ballets of Luciana Savignano and he performed piano solo with her at
Teatro La Scala of Milan.
Since 2006 his albums have been released in Japan and he quickly became famous touring the country
several times and collaborating with local artists and orchestras.
In 2009 he creates and performs the special show “Blind Date – Concert in the dark”, a live of pure
improvisation in which both artist and audience are soaked in the darkness.
He played world premiére in Milan (Teatro Smeraldo - sold out) and then the Tokyo’s Hara Museum of
Contemporary Art invites Cesare Picco for the Japanese premiére in September 2011 (two concerts sold
out). The show has been performed in Lugano, Rome and Florence as well.
In 2010 he enact the japanese romance “Tale of Genji”, for Piano and strings orchestra with the ensemble
