PROGETTO DI TESI: RELAZIONE SULLO STATO DI AVANZAMENTO DELLA
RICERCA
Il grottesco e il gotico nella children’s literature: dai picture books a Tim Burton
L’assunto di base del presente progetto di ricerca è rimasto sostanzialmente
invariato. L’obiettivo, quindi, è sempre quello di analizzare il gotico e il grottesco nella
children’s literature sia da un punto di vista letterario sia da un punto di vista visivo. In
particolare, si esaminerà la presenza di tali elementi nei picture books realizzati da
quegli illustratori che per primi hanno introdotto caratteristiche gotiche e grottesche
nelle illustrazioni dei children’s books o che hanno fatto del gotico e del grottesco un
tratto distintivo del loro stile. Questi illustratori, e i loro picture books, costituiranno
anche il punto di partenza per l’analisi delle opere di Tim Burton, che ha in un certo
senso raccolto la loro eredità e che, attraverso i libri per bambini da lui stesso scritti e
illustrati e tramite le sue trasposizioni cinematografiche dei classici della children’s
literature, continua ancora oggi a reinventare il grottesco e il gotico e ad esplorarne le
infinite possibilità.
L’attività di ricerca svolta nel corso dell’anno ha avuto come finalità la stesura
di un indice e di una bibliografia pressoché definitivi. Per quanto riguarda l’indice, la
tesi sarà suddivisa in due parti. La prima parte sarà di carattere generale e avrà una
funzione prettamente introduttiva utile per comprendere meglio gli argomenti
affrontati nella seconda parte della trattazione. Essa includerà tre capitoli. Il primo,
dato anche l’obiettivo primario del progetto di ricerca, sarà incentrato sui visual
studies e avrà lo scopo di darne un’esatta definizione e di individuarne le teorie critiche
di riferimento e il campo d’azione. Il secondo e il terzo capitolo avranno come oggetto
una breve storia del grottesco e del gotico, rispettivamente nell’arte e nella
letteratura, con particolare riferimento al mondo anglosassone. Scopo di questi due
capitoli sarà quello di individuare ed esaminare le caratteristiche di tali generi per
comprendere meglio se e come esse vengono modificate e rielaborate nell’ambito

della children’s literature. Proprio su questo sarà incentrato il quarto capitolo, che
aprirà la seconda parte della trattazione. Nel quinto capitolo si delimiterà
ulteriormente il campo, analizzando la presenza del grottesco e del gotico nei picture
books. Qui si prenderanno in esame le opere di quegli illustratori che per primi hanno
introdotto tali elementi nelle illustrazioni dei children’s books, contribuendo così a
rivoluzionare non solo tale campo, ma anche quello della children’s literature in
generale. Infine, il sesto capitolo sarà dedicato a Tim Burton e all’analisi dei libri per
bambini da lui scritti ed illustrati e delle trasposizioni cinematografiche dei classici della
children’s literature da lui dirette.
La bibliografia comprenderà dei testi primari e dei testi critici di carattere
generale. Per quanto riguarda i testi critici di carattere generale, ho raccolto dei
riferimenti bibliografici relativi ai visual studies, al grottesco e al gotico nell’arte e nella
letteratura con particolare riferimento al mondo anglosassone, al grottesco e al gotico
nella children’s literature e ai picture books. Per quanto riguarda i testi primari, invece,
ad oggi questa parte di bibliografia include i libri scritti ed illustrati da Tim Burton. Sto
attualmente scegliendo quali picture books includere nei testi primari, cercando di
focalizzarmi sulle opere di quegli illustratori in cui non solo è possibile individuare
elementi grotteschi e gotici, ma anche caratteristiche ed aspetti in comune con lo stile
burtoniano e dai quali è dunque possibile ipotizzare che Burton abbia tratto
ispirazione. Ho comunque deciso di concentrarmi sui picture books scritti ed illustrati
tra Ottocento e Novecento perché è questo il periodo in cui le illustrazioni dei
children’s books vivono un momento di particolare sviluppo e popolarità.
