'On th3t first Easter Sunday, the disciples not only
witnessed an event, but realised a truth which up until
then they had been unable to see. However, 'this
realisation does not occur straight away. When MaIy
Magdalen goes to Jesus' tomb at dawn she sees that the
stone has been moved away. At first, she cannot discern
the significance of what she sees. "They have taken the
lord out of the tomb", she tells Simon Peter and the other
disciple. MaIy knew he was not in the tomb, but she did
not have any idea where Jesus was now. The great
paradox of the resurrection is that it is both spectacUlar
and hidden. it is spectacular because it is the work of
God, raising Christ to a new life which all humanity is
called to share. But as St. Paul points out, this new,life is
for the moment hidden with Christ in God. The
'resurrection doesn't siare 'us in the' face like suffering of
the cross. What enables us to perceive it lies less in what
we see, and more in how we look.
Jesus prepares us throughout his teaching for the face
of his resurrection. Time and again he points to the new
life which arises from endurance and faith,- the ultimate
reward for thosc who hungcr and thirst for what is right.
The resurrection is woven into the fabric of the Gospel,
and with the eyes of faith, we, like the beloved, disciple,
cari see and believe it. The ri:surrection is the most
glorious and significant event imaginable, but - we can
begin to grasp its meaning only if we are prepared to find
it at work all around us. How we as a Church and as
individuals look at the world affects whether or not the
reality of the resurrection transfonns our lives as it
should. We need to look at our world and our
circumstances in the light of what the Word of God
teaches. We will not be handed the answers to the most
fundamental questions of our life, we need to look with
the eyes of faith to discern where God is leading us, and
where'Christ's glory can be revealed to the world aroimd
us,

When Delia made the resolve to
one day find her daughter, she never
dreamt that it would be so difIiculi,
she made tentative enquiries on her
own, but her father would never
revcal the name of the couple who
had adopted the baby and when he
died in 1977 he took the knowledge
with him. There was no help forthcoming from the adoption, society.
There were times when the task
seemed impossible but each year as

Iia's resolve would strengthen. Even
after the dcath of Dorando, her
mother, never mentioned the event or
the baby again. Until 1991 when
Linda's hcalth failed and learning that
her days were numbered and knowing
the hell that Delia had gone through,
she begged her to find the baliy and
insisted that Linda put tlie only photograph that she had of the baby on the
locker where she could see it from her
bed. Delia said I told her that the
family would ask questions about the
photo and her mother replied that it
no longer mattered who knew, and
that the priority was for Delia to find
her child. Linda had always known in
her hcart that Delia had never recovered from the loss and she wanted to
put things right. She told her that she
remembered a name from the adoption papers and she thought that it
was probably the name of the adoptive parents, this information gave
Delia added incentive, but in the long
run the name turned out to be the
name of the airforce base where the
family were stationed. The, search
went on she tried to get information
from the convent where she' had had
the baby, the only knowledge that she
was able to extract from them was,
that the father was an American, Pilot
stationed in England at the time of the
adoption, and that the family had long
since returned to America. Of the
many sources that Delia tried I will
name but a few, Cardinal Hume, The
Qucen, the Citizens AdviCe Burcau,
St Catherine's House, the American
Embassy, the United States Airforce,
the Salvation Army, and most of the
Public Records Offices. Part of the
problem was that she had so little
information, just the date of the
baby's birth, she had already tried the
hospital where Michelle was born.
The list is endless. In desperation she
sought publicity, she contacted ihe
Cilia Black Show, Anneka Rice, Oprah Winfrey, and many others, all to
no avail. Finally, she contacted an
American TV Show called 'Unsolved
Mysteries'. The programme took up'
the challenge, Delia was flown to
Boston, a few days later she sat
before the cameras, this was it, her
big chance to trace the daughter that
she had last seen 27 years ago. They
went through the details of the baby's
birth and showed the little photo that
Delia had cherished for so long. The
waiting was not yet over, Delia
returned to England, it was three
months later that the show was shown
all over America. Delia was informed
and the agonising wait began. Delia
sat by the phone in agony, supposing
she was too late, in 27 years anything
could have happened. 30 minutes
after the show went out, the phone
rang. Delia picked it up. Your daughter has contacted us and is waiting for
your call. "Hi Mom", could any
words have been sweeter. The long
search was over. Mother and daughter
talked for 'almost 4 hours. Miehelle,
now Liura FrankJand, was married to
an American Police Officer and the
mother of 2 children. Delia's
long

seareh was over. A mceting was
arranged, Delia• flew to the USA to
meet her daughter; there were no
recriminations.
Michelle (Laura) fully understood
why her mother had to let her go,
she'd had a happy and loving home
with her adopted family.
The happy ending to Delia's story,
is. that the programme flew Delia to
America to meet her daughter as you
can imagine, there was a joyous

reunion. Delia was later introduced to
Charles Power, ,the pilot who had
adopted Michelle, (sadly his wife had
died the year before). When she met
the man who had played the role of
father to Laura for 27 years she
finally felt that she had not let her
baby down. The Powers had adored
the baby, and what's more they had
been able to give Laura (Miehelle) a
life style way beyond the means of
the young unworldly, girl who had
given birth to her. An important factor
in the reunion was that it also helped
to lift the deep: shame that Delia had
been made to feel for so many years.
In 1992 Laura· arrived in England
where Delia thrCw a big family party
for her to meet 'the whole family. Can
you imagine the surprised relatives on
hearing the story, and meeting their
new found relative, Delia's baby,
whose birth had been kept sueh a
close secret for 27 years.
Another twist to the story, my
sister-in·law Lidia who. now lives in
Connecticut, ,America, where she has
resided since arriving there as a Gl
Bride 50 years ago, was watchi~g the
programme 'Unsolved Mysteries
when it went on the air, and it slowly
dawned on her that Delia was her
God-daughter, she also made contact
with the programme.
Delia's message for those who
bear the same burden that she endured
for so long - never giv~ up, even if at
times it seems hopeless you can
always pick up the seareh again.
Del.i;I's getting on with her life now,
she's been happily married to Ian for
17 years and with her own search
over, she is there for other's in the
same situation that she was in for so
many years!

Calling the Ghirardanis
My great-grandfather was Joseph Girardani and my grandfather was Aloysius Anthony Ghirardani. At the time
of grandfathers wedding in 1876 at SI. Peter's Italian Church, the family home was at 7 Bakers Row, E.C.I.
I have very little knowledge of great·grandfather Ghirardani except that he was an icecrcam vendor, was
married to Elizabeth (Wilson) had a family of at least four children, two sonos, my grandfather and Joscph William
(who eventually emigrated to USA) and two daughters, Joscphine and Louisc.
My connection is direct on the male side through my father WilIiam Albert who was the youngest of seven in
the family of Aloysius Anthony and Elizabeth Jane (Griffin).

this year's St. Valentine's day dimce, held on
Safuiday lOth FcbtitaJy at Bishop Douglass school
proved to be a great success. The proCeeds from
this dance have been, used to help fund the St.
Peter's OGI team in this year's OGI· event. The

event, the hall having been beautifully decorated
with a St. Valentine's theme with a great deal of
time and effon having been put into the planning
and preparation of the menu. 'As usual, demand
exceeded the number of tickets available. There
was dancing to the music of Vesuvio and the
evening cenainly went with a swing. The total
amount raised was £2,942 after expenses, and just
shows what team work and commitment can

Torquato Tasso
Nacque a Sorrento ncl 1544. Nelle sue opere si

le sue opere maggiori. Dal 1579 al 1586 fu rinchiuso
nell'Ospcdale di S. Anna a causa della sua mania di
persccuzione. Dopo altre peregrinazioni mori' aRoma.
Scrisse il suo primo poema cavallereseo "Rinaldo" a soli
ventanni. Tra' 'le sue opere ricordiamo "Aminta" un
dramma pastorale' che fu rnppresentato per la prima volta
su un'isoletta dil Po, la tragedia "Re Torrismondo", "I
,dialoghi'" c la sua opera piu' importante la "Gerusale~me liberata", poema cpico in 20 canti.

Sid cioc' signore, fu l'eroc guerricro dclla liberazione

Campeador cioc' guerriero. Valido aiuto per il re Sancio

Cid compi' grandi gesta contro gli Arabi e s'impadroni',

e austriaci, 127- spagnoli, 108 portoghesi e 29 tra inglesi e irlandesi.

charisma of Redford and the look of

gusto that I am left wondering
whether I should have laughed at
certain scenes - sueh as the eulogy
over the dead child's coffin. With a
piece of misCaSting in the shape of
Cusack, it film that doesn't know what
it is and so many others to chose from
I really 'would recommend you to put
this at the bottom of the list.
The plot of Smoke, like smoke,
drifts arid swirls around us. Characters
and' subplots are deftly woven into
stories that surround us and all focused on Auggie's tobacco shop.

75 gr di cacao dolce
2 bustine di vanellina
50 gr farina .
mezzo litro di latte
70 gr Zucchero semolato
12 cucchilrl di nun' 0 MafSaJa

Decorazione :' 175'gr' panha ,montat3 epiccoli uova di
ciocolato
Ingredients
5 oZ,sponge fingers
3 egg yolks

3 oz icing sugar
1 oz cocoaI2 oz drinking chocolate
3 teaspoon vaniJIa essence,

2 oz flour
1 pint mjlk
3 oz caster sugar
12 tablespoOns nun or Marsala
12 tablespoons water
To decorate:

Metocio'
Sbattete i turoli con 10 zucchero a velo. Unite iJ cacao e
la, vanellina. Quando tutti gli ingredienti saranno ben
amaJgamati versatevi, sempre mescillando. iJ latte POCO.
alIa volta badando che non si formano grumoli. Aggiungete 10 zuccher(i semolato. Mettete iJ composto suI
fuoco moderato e sempre mescolando. lasciatelo 'finche'
ottenete una;crema addensata (circa 3 minuti). Lasciatela
raffredare mescolando di tanto in tanto. Mescolate
insieme iJ rum e l'aCqua. Inzuppate i savoiardi nel
liquido. 'Fodernte iI fondo di una coppa di' circa 19cm
diametro con meta' dei savoiardi; coprite con meta' deJIa
crenia; ricoprite eon iI resto dei savoiardi e poi con la
rimanente crema. Mettete nel frigorifero' per parecchie ore
(meglio ' per' 24 ore). Prima di servire. decorate con la
panna,montata e'i pic:oli'uova di ciocolato
Method'
Beat together'the yolks and icing sugar. Add the ~,
drinking chocolate and vanilla essence. When all the
ingredients have been mixed together add the milk a
little at a time ~ng sure to avoid lumps. Mix in the
caster sugar. Put the' mixture onto a moderate heat and
mix continuo~ly'dntil thiek(about',3 minutes). Allow to
cool completely, stirring every now and then., Mix ,the
rum with ,the water. DiP. the sponge fingers 'into the
liquid.

Ingredient;
6 costate di agneJIo
6 foglie di salvia
6 foglie di rosmarino
1 spicco d'aglio
50 gr pancctta

18 olive nere snocciolate e tagliate in meta"

3 cucchiaini d'olio

Ingredients
6 lamb chops
6 sage leavcs
6 stems of rosemary
leaves

1 clove of garlic
2 oz bacon
•
2 leeks 'or 1 onion
18 blaek olives, pitted and eut in half
salt and pepper
3 teaspoons of oil
Metodo
Tritate insieme la salvia, iI rosmarino, I'aglio e la
pancetta. Mettetc ogni costata su un foglio di earta
argentata. Mettete su ognuno un po' del tritto. Spolverizzate con sale e pepe. Tagliatc la cipolla in 12 parte.
Disponete la cipolla e le olive sOpra ogni costata e,
irrorate con mezzo cucchiaino di olio. Chiudete i cartocci
e mettetcli su una teglia. Passateli i fomo pre-scaldato
1900/n05 per 45 minuti Servite ogni costata ncl proprio
cartoccio.
Method
Finely chop together bacon. sage. rosemary and garlic.
Put eaeh lamb chop onto a sheet of aluminium foil. Put a
little of the mixture onto each chop and season with salt
and pepper. Cut the onion or leek into 12 pieces. Place
with the olives on each chop.
Drizzle Y:. teaspoon of oil onto each chop. Close the
parcels and place on a baking tray. Bake in ovcn 190/no.
5 for 45 minutes. Serve cach chop still wrapped in its
own parcel.
