General outline
Ramzi Aburedwan spent his whole childhood
within Al Amari refugee camp in Ramallah,
where his family emigrated in 1948. The first Intifada (1987-1992), violence and
occupation marked his childhood, as that of most Palestinian children.
Today Ramzi is an internationally renowned musician, President and founder of the Al
Kamandjâti Association (which means “the violinist” in Arabic), a non-profit organization
he founded in 2002 to promote music education among Palestinian youth, especially
children, and strengthen their appreciation for Palestinian culture and identity. “We cannot
everlastingly wait for political decisions. We must work straight away with Palestinians to
build a cultural life that used to be so fertile.” Ramzi explains.
Project Justification and Objectives
Al Kamandjâti in France
The aim of the Al Kamandjâti Association is to
set up music schools for Palestinian children, in
particular the most vulnerable, those living in the
refugee camps. The main purpose of Al Kamandjâti
is to create an environment where education and
games are children’s principal concerns. Learning
music is an escape valve to those children: the music
schools offer them the chance to both discover their
cultural heritage and open themselves to the outside
world. In addition, they have a chance to explore
their creative potential.
Following the Al Kamandjâti
foundation, Ramzi and his associates
worked straight away in order to
organize cultural events with a simple
objective: find financial supports and
material utilities as well as moral encouragements
to allow them to start the music schools for the
Palestinian refugee children as soon as possible.
In the current situation, working with the children
is the best investment: the future of the region (and
the possibility of peace and justice in Palestine)
depends on them because “today’s children are
tomorrow’s adults”.
Al Kamandjâti developped and still arising its
own funding through the organization of concerts
(“Musicians for Palestine” in Chabada-Angers…),
festivals, public lectures and the collection of
musical instruments and teaching materials
(music scores, music stands, CDs…) given by
different donors (individuals, conservatories…).
Al Kamandjati also seeks funding from different
organisms and institutions, in Europe and all
around the world.

Profilo generale
Ramzi Aburedwan è cresciuto nel campo profughi di Al Amari a Ramallah, dove la sua famiglia
fu costretta ad emigrare nel 1948. La prima Intifada (1987-1992), la violenza e l’occupazione
hanno segnato la sua infanzia, come accade alla maggior parte dei bambini palestinesi.
Oggi Ramzi è un musicista noto a livello internazionale, presidente e fondatore dell’Associazione
Al Kamandjâti (che in arabo significa “Il violinista”), un’organizzazione no-profit nata nel
2002 per promuovere la formazione musicale tra i giovani palestinesi, in particolar modo tra i
bambini, e per consolidare la loro comprensione della cultura e della identità palestinesi. Nelle
parole di Ramzi: “Non possiamo attendere all’infinito decisioni politiche. Dobbiamo lavorare
adesso per costruire nuovamente in Palestina una vita culturale che è stata per tanto tempo
molto fertile”.
Gli obiettivi del progetto
Al Kamandjâti in Francia
Lo scopo dell’Associazione Al Kamandjâti è di
istituire scuole di musica per bambini palestinesi,
in particolare i più vulnerabili, coloro che vivono
nei campi di rifugiati. L’obiettivo principale di
Al Kamandjâti è di creare un ambiente in cui
l’educazione e i giochi siano il principale centro
d’interesse per i bambini. Studiare musica è una
via d’uscita per i bambini: le scuole di musica
offrono loro l’opportunità di scoprire la loro eredità
culturale e di aprire se stessi al mondo esterno.
Inoltre, gli viene data la possibilità di esplorare le
loro potenzialità creative. Nella situazione attuale,
lavorare con i bambini è il migliore investimento:
il futuro della regione (e la possibilità di pace e
giustizia in Palestina) dipende da loro perché “i
bambini di oggi sono gli adulti di domani”.
Dopo la fondazione di Al Kamandjâti,
Ramzi e i suoi colleghi hanno organizzato
eventi culturali con un semplice obiettivo:
trovare supporti economici e materiali,
così come incoraggiamenti morali per
istituire scuole di musica per i bambini
dei campi profughi palestinesi nel più
breve tempo possibile. Al Kamandjâti
ha raccolto, e continua a farlo, i propri
fondi attraverso l’organizzazione
di concerti, festival, incontri
pubblici ed attraverso la
raccolta di strumenti musicali
e materiali per l’insegnamento
(spartiti, leggii, CD...) offerti
da vari donatori (individui,
conservatori...). Al Kamandjâti
cerca anche fondi provenienti
da diverse istituzioni ed
organismi, in Europa e nel resto
del mondo.

Al Kamandjâti in Palestine
After this preliminary work in France, the first stones were laid in Palestine.
The association started organizing in 2003 public concerts and workshops for
children in different refugee camps (Al Amari, Al Jalazoun, Qalandiah, Aida,
Al Fuwwar, Tulkarem, Gaza…). And since then, the association organizes
once a year in Palestine that kind of workshops with children from different
refugee camps, villages and cities, trying to provide young Palestinians with
the opportunity to channel their energies, express their creativity, and develop
their talents.
A lot of concerts are organized regularly in Palestine (Mr. Richard Hartshorne
(Dobbs) in October 2005, a festival of baroque music with concerts in several
Palestinian churches…). Intolerance and lack of understanding between
people find their roots in ignorance of the culture of each other. As dialogue
between cultures is so inherent in Al Kamandjâti’s work, the Al Kamandjâti
approach to music stops any Al Kamandjâti action from imposing foreign
aesthetics or values on the community, whilst developing the existing culture
and improving the exchanges between populations.
Al Kamandjâti Music Centre / Ramallah Downtown
Since September 2005, Al Kamandjâti inaugurated a music centre in Ramallah, in
a house dated back to the Ottoman times and rehabilitated by Riwaq Architectural
Centre, with backing of Sida and in partnership with Tamer Institute, and with
the support of the Khalaf and Ghanem families. Al Kamandjâti can now provide
music lessons that are no more the privilege of a few, with instruction in
violin, viola, cello, contrabass, flute,
clarinet, trumpet, saxophone, piano,
guitar, oud, oriental and occidental
percussions,
singing,
musical
appreciation and musical notation.
Around 100 pupils benefit now by
these lessons, thanks to 15 teachers.

Al Kamandjâti in Palestina
Dopo questo lavoro preliminare in
Francia, le prime pietre sono state poste in
Palestina. L’associazione ha incominciato
ha organizzare concerti pubblici e workshops nel 2003, per bambini di diversi campi
profughi (Al Amari, Al Jalazon, Qalandiah, Aida, Al Fawwar, Tulkarem, Gaza...). Da
allora essa organizza in Palestina questo tipo di workshops con bambini di vari campi
profughi, villaggi e città, una volta all’anno, cercando di offrire ai giovani palestinesi
l’opportunità di canalizzare le loro energie, la loro creatività, e di sviluppare il loro
talento.
Numerosi concerti vengono regolarmente organizzati in Palestina (per es. quello di
Richard Hartshome “Dobbs” nell’ottobre del 2005, un festival di musica barocca con
concerti in numerose chiese Palestinesi...). L’intolleranza e la mancanza di comprensione
tra persone affondano le loro radici nell’ignoranza delle culture degli altri. Essendo il
dialogo tra culture così legato al lavoro di Al Kamandjâti, l’approccio dell’associazione
alla musica non impone gusti o valori, ma cerca di sviluppare la cultura esistente e
migliorare gli scambi tra popolazioni.
Il Centro Musicale Al Kamandjâti nella città vecchia di
Ramallah
Dal settembre 2005 Al Kamandjâti ha inaugurato un centro di musica a Ramallah,
in una casa del periodo ottomano ristrutturata dal Centro d’Architettura Riwaq, con
l’appoggio di Sida e in collaborazione con il Tamer Institute, e con il supporto delle
famiglie Khalaf e Ghanem. Al Kamandjâti può attualmente
offrire lezioni musicali non più ristrette a pochi privilegiati,
con corsi di violino, viola, violoncello, contrabbasso, flauto,
clarinetto, tromba, sassofono, piano, chitarra, oud, percussioni
orientali e occidentali, canto, teoria musicale e solfeggio.
Circa 100 bambini possono beneficiare attualmente di queste
lezioni tenute da 15 insegnanti.

un progetto direttamente nei Territori
palestinesi occupati.

Al Kamandjâti in Lebanon
Al Kamandjâti also carries out since February
2005, once a year, music training workshops
in the refugee camps in Lebanon, with about ten French musicians. These workshops
are similar to that organized in Palestine, giving the opportunity to many children to
discover music and all its benefits.
Al Kamandjâti Worldwide
Al Kamandjâti further plans
Al Kamandjâti activities extend all
over the world through different
actions. Several persons and
organisms (conservatories…) give
their instrument to the association as
a donation; Al Kamandjâti can then
put them at the disposal of its pupils.
The association makes also come
some music teachers for one or two
scholar years, as well as it sends some
to Europe to make them exchange
their experience with other teachers
and students. Stringed instrumentmakers also come regularly to
assist the association, repairing and
maintaining instruments; they can
also transmit their know-how to
some Palestinian children.
Al Kamandjâti is committed to expand the
programme. The organization wants to branch
out beyond music workshops and concerts, to
form youth choirs, youth-led orchestras, and
activities for all inhabitants of the refugee camps,
young and old.
Ramzi Aburedwan, Al Kamandjâti President,
recognizes the larger context of his work, and
although he has accepted a teaching position at
the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music
in Ramallah, he will continue to volunteer in the
Al Kamandjâti Music Centre. Artists, he declares,
have a particular responsibility to promote social
change.
“We see how important it is to give children the
opportunity to take part in the construction of
the cultural future of Palestine. That is the best
guarantee that our identity will be preserved.”

Al Kamandjâti in Libano
AL Kamandjâti ha anche istituito, una volta all’anno, degli ateliers di musica nei campi profughi del
Libano con l’aiuto di circa dieci musicisti francesi. Questi ateliers sono simili a quelli organizzati in
Palestina, con il medesimo scopo di offrire ai bambini l’occasione di scoprire la musica e il suo valore.
Al Kamandjâti in Italia
Al Kamandjâti ha anche stabilito legami molto forti con l’Italia a partire dal 2006. Diversi organismi
ed individui, convinti dell’importanza delle azioni dell’associazione, hanno aiutato Al Kamandjâti a
promuovere le sue attività organizzando concerti in Italia, una raccolta di strumenti da inviare alle scuole
di musica, l’invio di musicisti e liutai in Palestina, la creazione di contatti con istituzioni e organizzazioni
culturali. Oggi l’Italia costituisce un polo molto attivo per le attività di Al Kamandjâti.
Al Kamandjâti nel mondo
Il lavoro dell’associazione è diffuso in tutto
il mondo attraverso varie azioni. Numerose
persone ed organismi (conservatori...)
donano all’associazione i loro strumenti; Al
Kamandjâti può così metterli a disposizione dei
bambini a cui dispensa i corsi. L’associazione
invita anche in Palestina maestri di musica
per uno o più anni d’insegnamento, così
come invia i suoi insegnanti in Europa perché
possano scambiare le loro esperienze con altri
insegnanti o allievi. Alcuni liutai giungono
regolarmente in Palestina per la manutenzione
degli strumenti e per la formazione di giovani
palestinesi anche in questo campo.
Hanno diritto su questa terra alla vita: il dubbio di aprile,
il profumo del pane nell’alba, le idee di una donna sugli
uomini, le opere di Eschilo, il dischiudersi dell’amore,
un’erba su una pietra, madri in piedi sul filo del flauto, la
paura di ricordare negli invasori.
Hanno diritto su questa terra alla vita: la fine di settembre,
una signora quasi quarantenne in tutto il suo fulgore,
l’ora di sole in prigione, nuvole che imitano uno stormo
di creature, le acclamazioni di un popolo a coloro che
sorridono alla morte, la paura dei canti negli oppressori.
Su questa terra ha diritto alla vita, su questa terra, signora
alla terra, la madre dei princìpi madre delle fini. Si
chiamava Palestina si chiama Palestina. Mia
signora ho diritto, ché sei mia signora, ho diritto
alla vita.

I progetti di Al Kamandjâti
Al Kamandjâti intende ramificare il suo programma di attività a partire dagli atelier
di musica e dai concerti, fino all’organizzazione di giovani cori, di giovani orchestre, e di
attività per tutti gli abitanti (adulti e ragazzi) dei campi profughi. Ramzi Aburedwan, presidente di Al Kamandjâti, è consapevole del
vasto impatto della sua associazione e, pur avendo accettato un posto di professore al Conservatorio Nazionale di Musica Edward Said
a Ramallah, prosegue le sue attività per Al Kamandjâti. Gli artisti, dichiara, hanno una responsabilità particolare, quella di promuovere
il cambiamento sociale. Nelle parole di Ramzi Aburedwan: “sappiamo quanto sia importante dare l’opportunità ai bambini di prendere
parte alla costruzione del futuro culturale della Palestina. È il miglior modo di conservare la nostra identità”.
