The torrent Pescia at Collodi The torrent Pescia at Collodi, also called Pescia minore, is a stream that rises from the western area of the Valdinievole, between the provinces of Lucca and Pistoia. The torrent, named after the small village of Collodi it runs through, has got its sources in the village of Villa Basilica and it flows into the marsh area of Padule di Fucecchio. Its flow has got a seasonal trend; wide stretches rich in steep bank vegetation follow areas with banks covered with pebbles and whip. In addition to a rich fish fauna, there are several species of invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles and mammals living and moving in the cane thickets and in the shallow waters. Thanks to the links with the nearby Padule di Fucecchio, the Pescia of Collodi is of great importance for the bird population, too: actually, it is not unusual to watch Little Egrets ad Grey Herons busy at fishing along the banks. The big oak of San Martino At San Martino in Colle, few kms far from the old centre of Montecarlo, a majestic specimen of Downy Oak (Quercus pubescens) stands. The height of this monumental tree, aged about 500 years, is more than 14 metres, and its branches, bent towards the ground, take up an area of more than 30 square metres. The size and the shape of this tree have given cause for several legends and tales: it is handed down that, in full moon nights, witches used to have their infernal sabbaths at its foot or, also, that Carlo Lorenzini, known as Il Collodi, was inspired by this tree to create the episode in which the puppet Pinocchio is hanged from an oak. The natural areas and the wood “Ai Comunali” The woods and the wild areas around the built-up area of Montecarlo give the opportunity of observing several habitats rich in plants and typical fauna. These areas mingle with vineyards and tilled land, making the landscape a mosaic of shapes, colours and scents changing in time and over seasons. At the tops of the hills and in the driest areas thick pinewoods of Maritime Pine grow: they are surrounded by typical plants of the Mediterranean scrub, such as Holm Oak, Coark Oak, Myrtle, Strawberry Tree. Along the streams or in the areas characterized by a cooler and wet microclimate deciduous trees (Sweet Chestnut, Black Alder, Willows) can be found, but also evergreens such as Laurel and Holly, standing along the rio Strigaio with large-sized specimens. In the small humid areas inside the wood very rare paludal plants grow, such as the Royal Fern (2 metres high) and the small Peat Moss, a moss typical of the peat-bogs of northern Europe. tel. 0583.22034 [email protected] cell. 335.8066036 [email protected] Parish Church of San Piero in Campo To plan a visit at the Parish Church of San Piero in Campo, a medieval parish church dating back to the beginning of the Christianity, contact the Parish of Montecarlo tel. 0583.22034 [email protected] cell. Most of the routes wind down on the old unpaved “vicinali” or “poderali” roads, that preserve their structure in packed earth or cobbles. The reutilization of the “Strade Poderali Bianche” and also the need to preserve them in their original structure (unpaved) are strongly felt by the inhabitants. Continuously in contrast with the family of the nobles of Uzzano and Montechiari and with the abbey of San Pietro in Pozzeveri for the exploitation of the territory, Vivinaia was destroyed on 25th February 1331 by the Florentine army in retreat from the siege of Lucca; between 1332 and 1333 the inhabitants moved to the new village of Montecarlo. VIA COLMATA CHARLES IV ROUTE Parish Church of San Piero The first document referred to the Parish Church of San Piero in Campo dates back to 846 A.D., but the recent archaeological researches trace its foundation back to the end of the 4th century. The present church, restored a short time ago, was built in the first years of the 13th century. The surrounding small village was destroyed in 1314 by Uguccione della Faggiola and the name of parish church passed to the Church of S. Andrea in Montecarlo in 1408. CARBONATA DA RO M AN A Church of Turchetto The church was founded and endowed by the brothers Giovan Domenico and Giuliano Carmignani, rich merchants of the hamlet of Turchetto, that derives its name from the Ligurian Bartolomeo di Giovanni, known as the Turkish, who opened a tavern there, in 1476. S. Giuseppe The place derives its name from the church, built between 1634 and 1642, to thank after the plague of 1630-1631. It is a sepulchral church of the Capitolo of the Collegiata of Montecarlo, and in ancient times, on 19th March, a very crowded fair took place around it.
