Almeno in prima battuta. A tutti costoro un sentito “grazie”. editorial art and culture in private hands editoriale l’arte e la cultura custodite dal privato di|by Giovanna Grossato During times of crisis, public commitment in the field of culture, and of art in particular, is one of the first things to wane. Few resources are earmarked for exhibitions and, in general, to supporting this important sector, considered to be low-profile, in which, among other things, various other vital activities for a country’s image (and intellectual substance) are grafted. Wrongly considered not to generate any significant spin-off business, investments in art also suffer from the limitation that attention to it is concentrated within quite a limited bracket of “users”. In short, its contribution is modest as might be said by experts on popularity indices for whom “quantity” is considered to be a value per se, completely separate from “quality”. Furthermore, often the assessment of the results is projected into a future that is too far away to be politically appreciable and consistently appetizing. Therefore as public investors are unable to obtain any reward for their commitment quickly enough, they do not have sufficient incentives of a political nature, especially in the current brief and instable government terms. As a result, if the public administration is absent, all that remains is to hope in the farsighted and disinterested generosity of private parties who often also have the advantage that their hands are not tied in terms of choice: they can select what they like most, and follow their own tastes and inclinations which quite frequently are more refined and up to date, and less fossilized and conservative than those of state structures. Paradoxically, when those who operate in businesses aimed at making profits (entrepreneurs, for example) invest resources in an intangible asset par excellence such as culture, they do so with an objective - perhaps not in the highest place, but at least among the main aims - of obtaining ethical/ aesthetic satisfaction, i.e. substantially without any economic benefit. At least initially. In 1891, the Irish writer, poet and dramatist, Oscar Wilde, wrote in his novel, “The Picture of Dorian Gray” that “The cynic knows the value of everything and the price of nothing”. Over one hundred years have passed and, unfortunately, the statement is as true as ever. Price plays an ideological role and there is an incorrect, though still widespread and deep-rooted conviction that it constitutes the sensor that signals people’s needs and requirements. As can easily be imagined, nothing is more false and it is good that even some politicians who are particularly attentive and sensitive to global changes have realized this and pointed it out. Hence the idea of GNH, an acronym for Gross National Happiness which, with a tongue in cheek reference to Gross National Product (GNP), attempts to define a standard of living which not only takes account of material needs on their own but especially of immaterial, spiritual and psychological ones. Contrary to what one might suppose, it was not a western sociologist who coined the term, but no less than the king of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, who wanted to develop the concept of an economy in his country which would take account of people’s desire to be happy, based on the spiritual values of Buddhism. So, if for a moment we were to consider culture and art to be intangible “consumer items” to be included in the “basket” of goods that are basic necessities for people, it would seem to be a logical consequence that there should be a policy for governing this. But there is not, not in Italy, not for now, anyway. Fortunately our area, though not free from the pangs of an insistent crisis, is still able to find resources, large or small, in the private sector that are capable of maintaining a cultural system afloat, a system which is perennially at risk of death in the hands of the public administration. Faced with this unhappy case of ill health, large sponsors still come forward to support important restorations while many lesser helpers offer a myriad of contributions that are equally significant and indispensable. Heartfelt thanks to all of them. But Biasi has always had little interest in classifications: “If you really want to label me,” he declared in a recent interview, “I would like to be classified, distinguished by what I effectively am, namely for my polyhedric research ... as a kinetic artist therefore, but also optical, also programmatic, and especially gestalt; in short a kaleidoscopic artist, initiator of interactive art, a creator of works which do not represent but become, a constructor of containers of energy, of tools that interact with the viewer, that originate virtual images and forms, not kinetic, it should be noted, but dynamic.” The integrity of his work, animated by a stylistic mark which is always weighty and persuasive, endows his meditated and constant work with an unmistakeable profile. Today, the compositional equilibrium, the structural rationalism of which is not limited to the volumetric dimension only, has characterized the production of Alberto Biasi (Padua 1937) for half a century through the streamlining of an ego attentive to the interior flows of the spirit. An examination of the corpus of his work, overcoming the kinetic diktat which is often even misleading, makes it possible to understand how the genius of form dwells in this Veneto artist and how it is accompanied by an interiority which highlights poetic assimilation as a liberating sentiment. In fact, if from a technical point of view he reveals surprising skill, necessary for those like him who work in frameworks of precision and rigour, from an emotional standpoint he revitalizes a syntax which is presented without yielding and which for this reason is dense with values belonging to the universe of man and of his disciplines. We could say that Biasi manages to align the truths of geometry with the truths of nature and of the idea, surprising us through the work of art thanks to the immediate concreteness with which he proposes himself, in that pulsating vitalism and in the perfect openness he offers to our visual experience. The painting and its possible material thicknesses were Rosso mio 2004 tecnica mista|mixed media cm 160x107x4,5 7 Gemelli 1992 tecnica mista|mixed media visione da due angolature diverse|view from two different angles cm 72x102x3 congenial to the youthful Biasi but were not sufficient to provide the plastic and dynamic consistency he was looking for. This was around the nineteen-sixties, years of unease and intense experimentation: a desire to discover, the need for confrontation would lead the artists to form Gruppo N (1959, with which he would work until ’67); later he would be among the promoters of Nuove Tendenze (1961) and one of the founders of Arte Programmata (1962). The abandonment of painting would take place with the aid of lamellar PVC structures, glass prisms, Plexiglas and other useful materials for the visual “contrivances” conceived by the artist. Or, as Elena Forin writes, “even if he does not paint, he loves and respects that technique, and you can see it (...). And then, if we look carefully, there is certainly a pictorial sense however sui generis (...), in the chromatic variations, in the lamellar structures, in the mysterious attraction of his forms on transparent materials, in the relationship between movement and immobility in the assembles.” Having completed the propulsive drive of team work, Biasi’s research continued as a “soloist”. It was then that his work assumed an unmistakeable musical, harmonic, polyphonic rhythm, modulated in tomes and semitones; yellow and ochre, sky-blue and azure, pink and red, greys and blacks, until he reflects his movements in an undulation of lines which over time and especially in the more recent works increasingly less embrace linear rigour and increasingly chromatic diffusion, through a deformation which is specified in a highly personal stylization. Proof of this can be found in some particular linguistic elements: the organization of the structural complexity, the tendency towards visual stratifications which perceptively mutate the surfaces, the arrangement of the range of colours, and the attention towards avoiding chromatic hierarchies; a way of overcoming the constraints of excessively rigid synchronies as an antidote to the stiffening of the formal articulation. Colour emerges as impalpable fluorescent magma, as if overcoming the classical principle of the generating nucleus. That is why the work of Alberto Biasi, exhibited in the world’s leading museums, even if executed in accordance with the most rigorous criteria, still manages to quickly rouse the impression of a profoundly felt and lived, lyrical and elegiac expressivity. Then there were his travels - to Paris, Sweden, London and Scotland and New York - jazz and reading, as well as his innate passion for literature and poetry, which provided the foundations for his human and artistic growth. At the beginning of his career in the early fifties, his talent was attracted by the informal ideas he found at the beginning of the sixties in some of the most attentive and committed galleries in Northern Italy (Carrain in Padua, Galleria del Cavallino in Venice and Galleria del Naviglio in Milan), in Rome, Naples, Vienna, Trieste, Dusseldorf and Lausanne and in the National Gallery of Modern Art in Tokyo. Critics such as Achille Bonito Oliva, Umbro Apollonio, Giuseppe Marchiori, Filiberto Menna, Maurizio Fagiolo, and Francalanci took an interest in his work while in the meantime he shifted his interest towards Nuove Tendenze, with a tormented pause for reflection between 1969 and 1970. Teaching experience also became part of his path with the chair of Painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice, his courses and lectureships at the Universities of Sheffield and Norwich in Great Britain, at Atlanta in the Unites States, the teaching of painting at New York University and, more recently, teaching the History of Contemporary Art at Venice’s Ca’ Foscari University. One of the first germs which inoculated the passion for painting and for the abstract expression in the artist’s soul was a nineteen-forties painting by the American artist, Arshile Gorky, which Patelli discovered in the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, and then an important exhibition of XIX century American painting held in Palazzo Reale in Milan in 1957. While creating within and on his own time, Patelli often worked at a distance from the trends of current fashions, 12 and he was driven, rather, by the need to integrate his own life into the artistic activity which, for him, constitutes a daily and ineluctable commitment. In any case, continuous research and tension towards new expressive canons constitute the characteristic cipher of this strong-willed and inquisitive painter who has not suspended his investigations and does not consider any point of arrival to be definitive, and in fact thinks that his approach to painting has been “perennially out of phase with the fashions of the times.” At the end, the guiding thread across the decades has been his love for painting - true painting - and physical contact with the pictorial material. His attraction to the abstract and to expressionism and the importance of the gestural continue to play an important role even in recent works which, however, also assume renewed connotations vis-à-vis certain formal aspects. In fact it seems that some techniques such as “dripping” and the very confines of the supports, intolerant of the traditional rectangular forms, return the work to primary liberty and fantasy: towards the encounter with organic structures which then correspond both to the polyhedric form of thought and the physical shape of the body, freed from a precise role in space. The presence of some elements foreign to painting (which still remains the primary foundations), a sort of “objet trouvé”, are also accentuated in the most recent production from Patelli who, by his own admission, loves to insert pieces of wood or other non-specifically pictorial components into his paintings which, however, are similar to art as they belong to life, and whose preciousness in the composition is inversely proportional to their “poverty” and intrinsic simplicity. This aspect of “poorness” has often become a non-determinant but unquestionably characterizing feature of Paolo Patelli’s path from a theoretical standpoint. STRUCTURE AND MATERIAL Vinicio Momoli, who was born in Padua in 1942, works in Paris and Castelfranco Veneto and has a wealth of exhibitive activity behind him: more than 200 shows in Italy and abroad in museums, public institutions and private galleries. His artistic maturity was enhanced by several trips to the United States and long stays in Paris which put the artist into contact with the most avant-garde contemporary experiences. Right from the beginning, Momoli adopted different expressive forms in his polyhedric research, with an experimental dialectic open to countless developments, always anchored however in the minimalist school, and to the positive simplicity of form-material, intended as a vehicle of plastic emotions. Starting from the eighties his work was enriched by a vivid chromatic sensibility open to a confrontation with space through environmental installations and multi-material sculptures with which the artist interpreted and reinvented the archetypical forms of living. They aroused considerable interest, leading to various important installations in Austrian and German art galleries during those years and the ones immediately afterwards. The formal cleanliness which characterized the work in that period is associated with metal projections of ancestral and poetic itineraries, with refined geometrical stylistic elements, and with the synthesis of different disciplines which interweave freer elements in the weft of their rigour, using tangled coloured lines or chromatic transparencies. For the artist, commonly used materials such as Plexiglas, marble, rubber, metals and wood become the protagonists of a constructive interaction, suspended between the value of the symbol and the one suggested by the intrinsic nature of the material itself. His relationships with Spanish galleries and public institutions intensified starting from the nineties and became particularly significant. In 1998 at Santillana del Mar (Santander) the artist presented new ways of manipulating the materials which articulate themselves in space: rubber and light. Fluorescent tubes and light bulbs become the chromatic material which transforms the work, expanding it in space. In this regard, Edoardo Di Mauro wrote of this last expressive phase of Vinicio Momoli: “Momoli’s depth and conceptual attitude could not exempt him from tackling public art and in these last years he has proposed himself with permanent installations put in place in Spain, Leon, Riese Pio X (Tv) and Toronto (Canada)”. In these imposing structures the artist excavates passages which penetrate the blocks of stone and realizes the biomorphic morphologies which distinguish his most recent creative stage. He selects and treats the material with great love and respect, in line with the finest classical Italian tradition and seeks the spiritual charge in it which lies waiting to be extracted by able hands, by experience and by the sculptor’s sensibility. A figure in the foreground of the post-war artistic panorama, he was born in Reggio Emilia in 1940 but is Venetian by adoption and formation. His work matures on the thread of a singular and adroit revisitation of artistic experiences which he always traverses “obliquely”: an incursion whose outcomes are characterized by vital explosions of unbridled, apparently contradictory and absolutely pure research. Proof of this is the need, common to all his work, to organize the complexity of the elements used on the basis of a structural unity of visual perception which avoids hierarchy and subordinations. The artist himself underlines the desire to “demolish the barrier between science and art and to effect diagonal traverses, true globalizations which render the inexpressive face of the machine more human.” Hence the encounter with the screen, apparently extraneous to the usual tools of art, unpoetical 20 in the eyes of tradition as it does not come from the “artisan” world of painting and sculpture, but from the outside world, that of the technological process, whose potential and conceptual advantages are grasped by Plessi. Here is one way of intervening on something which - for good or ill - is part of our everyday reality (how many hours do we pass in from of the television or the screens of our computers?), and of redeeming its latent expressive side and, in the investigation, confronting new technical and perceptive qualities in the creation of sculpture. In this way, Plessi opens himself to a language which from the “nurseries” of tradition transplants itself in nature, reconceiving its relationship with matter and with things, cancelling every possible extraneousness in the context of the possibilities offered by the modern technologies he so skilfully employs. Plessi uses videos as a material, as if they were marble, stone, carbon, clay of wood: “It is basic for me;” the artist maintains, “I have never considered the television to be a tool of information. I consider the television to be exactly like a material (...) with which the artist can create a world of his own with manipulations.” The formal and conceptual integrity of this path, accompanied by an increasingly pregnant and persuasive language, is unquestionably the feature which confers an unmistakeable profile on his work, developed over more than forty years of constant and meditated activity. The awareness of the sensory nature of the images, repeated in the luminous video projections, can always be found in the plastic dimension of the elements intended to contain them and in their formal richness. It is never a question of forced inclusions but of liaising functions whose concatenation never refutes the development and consistency of the artistic discourse. Plessi’s work always oscillates between the visible and the tactile and the two acquire enhanced values from one another without yielding. This aspect is inseparable from the vocation of an expressive poetic capable of generating primordial energies and archaic dimensions which are immediately evocative. It is no coincidence that water and fire are the essential elements of his language and research, and their use, never direct but always filtered through video, surpasses the tension and violence of the natural eruption which they ancestrally recall, aiming, rather, towards a poetic encounter which nourishes itself on the alienating impossibility of cohabitation, on apparently contradictory ones - mentioned at the beginning - that are possible because they are pure, capable of providing metaphors of nature and of the world: water and fire which are changeable, fluid and unstable, in any case, like images transmitted by video. And video, unlike anything else, is the medium that can restore “another” view of reality. Plessi’s water does not wet, just as his fire does not burn. It is here in this ability to unite and renew inventiveness in the flexible mutability in which it offers itself that the artist’s consistency can be found. The form corresponds to the flow of the images: in this way Plessi puts the art of allusion and of dissimulation into play, achieving results which are among the most audacious and radically innovative. The overall impression is one of the transiting of a great material, such as the sliding of lava (another material loved by the artist, a material imbued with fire), which reveals a simultaneous universe of images and sensations in which the natural event, whether this is the flowing of water, the movement of waves or the burning of fire, seems to repeat its reoccurrence to infinity: technology and manual skill signal hypotheses of space and form and define the perfect synthesis between ancient and modern, between past and future. And so his compositions, often monumental, impose themselves like a challenge to the conventions of space and of the environment, of nature and artifice; they reorganize themselves in new codes, flattering the viewer’s perception. Art returns to being fiction, admirable deceit. Speriamo. Aldo Cibic è presente con “Rethinking Happiness” alla 12a Edizione della Biennale di Architettura di Venezia che si chiuderà in novembre 2010 e al Museo del Design alla Triennale di Milano nell’ambito della mostra “Quali cose siamo” in corso fino al 27 febbraio 2011. 23 a sinistra, dall’alto in basso|left, from top to bottom Urbanismo rurale Urbanismo rurale Comunità a destra, dall’alto in basso|right, from top to bottom Urbanismo rurale Urbanismo rurale Campus 24 ALDO by Anna Livia Friel CIBIC SUSTAINABLE MODELS OF HAPPINESS in questa pagina|on this page Superbazar Rather than architectural objects, those proposed by Vicenza designer, Aldo Cibic, seem like human situations, formulae of daily life which, instead of adapting to the surrounding world, find space in it for expanding, for developing their potentials more fully. Already in 2004 Cibic investigated the new problems of contemporary living and the possibility of living peacefully with is Microrealities. This was how visions of little realities came into being, combined together with a view to creating humanly precious dynamics, sometimes engaged in describing modern rural passages, sometimes enveloping particularly harsh parts of the city with Arcadian serenity, spaces which we are used to perceiving as non places - metro stations, shopping centres. The titles of these visions suggest the unfolding of a sort of future saga in which society finetunes a simpler, more comfortable dimension through brief episodes: in “The Gates of the City” Milan opens and instead of powerfully marking out the limits between inside and outside, designs permeable walls which become the premise for the creation of new types of boundaries. In “The City of Gardens”, man, the urban animal, succeeds in taking possession again of the seasonal rhythm dictated by the needs of the earth, thanks to reacquired environmental awarenesses and, in a revisited “metro-hippy” style, he blends the countryside into it. Rethinking happiness, chapter two: by now it is certain that the future is in research into hybrid spaces, half way between town and country, where boundaries are mixed, and it is not clear which of the two is benefiting the other. One of the scenes opens onto the life of a small community of creative personalities gathered around a large company: the quality of the architecture in this modern Garden City is given by its ability to grasp the life of these people, to create the right spaces for the appropriate activity, to become a cradle and little fulcrum full of potential. With “Superbazar” on the other hand, the transformation is carried out in totally urban territory: little blocks belonging to an easily comprehensible architectural alphabet are combined around a metro station and, when placed one above the other, and side by side, end up by creating an extremely dynamic ensemble, incredibly various and vital. This provides the occasion for putting together library and shared kitchen, rent hotel and skate park, low cost homes and open markets. By means of these settings, Aldo Cibic offers us his solutions to the problems when render our sleep unsettled today and makes it possible for us to image alternative situations - while the world is gripped in the world of consumerism, of global warming, of the scarcity of water and of social injustices - where children cycle alongside their father’s workshop and the spaghetti are made with grandfather’s wheat. Let’s hope so. Aldo Cibic is present with “Rethinking Happiness” at the 12th editions of the Venice Biennale of Architecture which will close in November 2010 and in the Design Museum of the Milan Triennale in the framework of the show, “Quali cose siamo”, running until 27 February 2011. 25 gruppovisintin l’imprenditoria per l’arte e la cultura 26 Le ristrettezze economiche congiunturali hanno tra le prime vittime la cultura, come si può constatare dovunque le pubbliche amministrazioni abbiano chiuso i rubinetti che erogavano risorse in tale direzione. Ma diamo tempo al tempo”. thevisintingroup business for art and culture Culture has been one of the first victims of the economic recession as public administrations have turned off the taps that distributed resources in this direction. Often, then, hopes and expectations are directed towards the private sector so that the different fields associated with art and entertainment can hold on and survive as they wait for better times. Fortunately there are many private structures, organizations or individuals which make resources available, and not without acknowledgement, given that while it certainly does not conquer the masses, the image of the illuminated “patron” acts on the highly aware and reflective layers of Italian culture which certainly exist, even amid widespread obscurantism. Often the deployment of exceptional resources is not necessary, such as those required for sensational restorations and operations (Punta della Dogana or Mulini Stuky in Venice, for example, to mention just two in the Veneto area). The quality of the motivation is also equally effective when it works on situations which require attention, perhaps less onerous but more constant and methodical. Fortunately there are many willing entrepreneurs in Veneto, at various levels of importance, who are prepared to put their commitment into the field with sensitivity and shrewdness. These include Massimo and Luca Visintin of the Visintin Group whom we asked to tell us how their interest for art was born and which drove them to support cultural initiatives and to dedicate themselves, also out of personal interest, through simple and genuine love of art, to help the careers of some promising young artists who are not yet famous but are gaining success in the arduous jungle of the art world. There are illustrious examples of interest in the figurative arts in general and in architecture in particular in the native land of Massimo and Luca Visintin who obtained their initial education in the “Cavanis” Institute in Possagno, a little town in the Treviso Province which became great thanks to its tutelary deity, Antonio Canova. When bringing his genius to Europe, the great neoclassical sculptor also brought the whole world to Possagno, turning the town into a destination of cultured international tourism. This was also thanks to the fact that he never abandoned his birthplace and, indeed, profoundly rooted his activity there: in his house (now a museum reorganized by Carlo Scarpa) and even with his tomb-cenotaph, the world-famous Temple of Canova. And so the idea of keeping one’s roots well anchored in one’s land of origin was one of the first things Massimo Visintin learnt: “In our family, myself and my brother Luca were always sensitized to culture and art, even after my father’s early death, thanks especially to my mother who took care of our education.” The decision to focus on architecture “in its most immediate form, it its first and most radical manifestations - building” is certainly not extraneous to the subsequent path of the Visintin Group. Not that the other sectors of art are less interesting for them, but the moment of action is certainly the closest to their heart: that which induces one to work in everyday situations with the entrepreneurial activity. What are the first conscious sensations you felt when you saw Canova’s works just a few steps from home? “One of my sharpest memories and one of the fundamental reasons for my attraction when looking at Canova’s masterpieces was perceiving the contrast between the impressiveness and majesty of these sculptures and, paradoxically, feeling the sensation of lightness that they managed to transmit. I truly believe that this elegance and this expressive force have always struck me since I was a boy, perhaps unconsciously but in a definitive manner. Even if my activity cannot be considered to be a real artistic path, dealing with architecture every day is a source of satisfaction for me. Following the world of artists and creative people makes me a participant to a certain extent in what is being created today. I am convinced that, though it is not always easy to orient oneself in contemporary artistic language, there are many aspects of great interest in it and various promises for the future. I am therefore happy to be there and work this universe, grazing it lightly. And also to be able to acquire other contemporary works in the future, while contributing at the same time to supporting some young artists, though without being able to define myself as a real collector. But let’s give things time.” Senza titolo 2001 olio su tela|mixed media cm 70x80 Senza titolo 2003 tecnica mista|mixed media cm 70x92 33 PAOLO LOVATO THE LINES TAMED by Giovanna Grossato What is there behind that yellow streaked with ochre, behind those violent brushstrokes of green in which a glimmer of violet breaks out for a few centimetres? What is there behind the tight sequences of lines where the chromatic combinations are almost always in a dialectic and conflictual relationship? There is the abstract Paolo Lovato, a pictorial world rooted in the passion for looking, discovering, approaching and reproducing the colours that express states of the heart. Initially, in the early sixties, his painting hinged on a rugged and determined figurativeness which reconstructed figures and, especially, familiar landscapes, following the trail of the valleys and trees, of the roads which gave the impression of always and in all cases being uphill. Then his research became even more severe, even steeper, aided by constant comparison with the international universe of present and past art, with the discoveries of the expressive possibilities proposed by the masters of Salzburg in the Sommerakademie which was a common experience for many Veneto artists of Lovato’s generation. This school was cosmopolitan in its own way and amply compensated the enterprise of those young people who moved to the city of Mozart during the summer months to follow the courses there, but also to discover themselves and compare their work with the master lecturers and with their colleagues, discussing the new values to give to pictorial language. Over the decades and through matured experience painting became a “non place” for Lovato, or, rather, an abstract and boundless universe on which to concentrate the energy, on which to fix the image of one’s mental categories. Despite the fact that his work is difficult to place within a precise contemporary trend, apart from the generic framework of abstract expressionism, there is nevertheless a precise correspondence between his work and some specific artistic research activities that move along lines similar to his own, starting from the sixties and seventies: from Karel Appel and, in general to the other members of the Cobra Group, and to Corneille, just to remain in Europe; but, nearer at hand, there were some of the exponents of the renewal of Italian pictorial language such as Santomaso and Reggiani or there were the Americans, especially Stella and Newmann who revealed themselves to be sensitive to the new pressures and radically transformed Paolo Lovato’s lexicon in an informal manner. What is always present in his production however is a systematic traction, both in the large canvasses and in the smaller scale paintings, which manages to smash through the support with equal intensity and forces the pictorial textures to discipline themselves in refined compositions rich in formal values. The saturated density of the colours reveals unthought-of beauties as if by chance (but never by chance!) and highlights the power of the chromatic matter and exalts it. Even though Lovato’s colour is characterized by a great capacity to organize rationally and with systematic consistency, the creative event always maintains a mysterious spontaneous and gushing force, and an intense and convincing gestural urgency and expressiveness which have been accentuated, starting from 2000 in particular, and increasingly charged the pictorial matter and make it achieve bastions full of sonority. Federico Bonaldi vive ed opera a Bassano del Grappa (Vi) Senza titolo gres|stoneware and porcelain cm 20x20 sotto|below Il potere e l’impotenza 1981 marmorino su tavola|marmorino on panel cm 33x46,5 BONALDI ! THAT DEVIL OF Amore. Sequenza d’amore fischiante carta|paper by Marco Maria Polloniato Do not be deceived by the mischievous title: Federico Bonaldi is a serious man, a very serious one who still likes to make fun of himself and the world. Even those who know him remain fascinated by the aura of artist which issues from him and from the somewhat magical and mysterious workshop where he passes much of his time working ceaselessly. That’s the way Bonaldi is: a lucid person with a 360° gaze on the world and who travels with a mind that is a lot faster than computer networks. He certainly does not look down on fun and still loves to seek out for that abstract sign which is invention and tradition at once, a trace of something that is ancient, a link with forebears and with ancestral recollections. His works spring from a fascination with popular culture, packed with playful and good-natured elements mixed with the natural teachings which country life used to bring with it. Bonaldi continues to range across this culture with its own language even if he is perfectly aware of the contemporary world he lives in. He has done so since the forties when he attended the art school in Nove, a town which he is particularly associated with, where he met Prof. Parini and the Sicily this master described and extolled, while Bonaldi worked as an apprentice in the production of cuchi; and then Prof. Petucco endowed with both artistic and business skills. Venice was also part of his formation as it was for other students from the Nove art school, and he knew how to grasp not only the human aspects but also the artistic ones from every experience. While working as an artisan during those years his mind continued to travel without rest, recognizing that unique link which history maintains in the details, insignificant to the eyes of most people. This is where the cuchi sprang from, as well as his later ceramic works, realized with an eye on the essential nature of the real and on the corners of daily life, his own and that of his family and friends and, in particular, on the simple world that surrounded and still surrounds him. Objects, signs of objects, agglomerates of forms that are recognizable or allude to something else, united by the ability to fascinate us in a direct and precise manner: “I am in debt to a world of traditions which have given a lot and been so fortunate in this part of Italy. a world in which knowledge of our ancestors, fathers and mothers, of one past, even remote, provided a solid foundation on which to base one’s own personality as it developed.” This respect for tradition has not attacked the lively creativity of Bonaldi who, during many decades of experience, can boast of exhibitions and awards from every part of the globe. One of the benchmarks in his artistic production dates from the beginning of the eighties, the years that were soon to become the “anni di piombo”, the years of the bullet. This was a period when the political climate had a significant influence on literature, music and on certain art, as well as on posters and on the walls. On the walls. Spattered with words which screamed clichés and unrepeatable phrases, party slogans and watchwords, and invective. Bonaldi’s cycle of works entitled “Il potere e l’impotenza” (“Power and impotence”) is the most direct and incisive example of how an artist has ridiculed the social conscience of the gutter with his own personal philosophy: “The concept of impotence is simple: there is no point in getting angry when mediocre people get elected. Opposing them in a violent and conspicuous manner only boosts those who hold the power.” Bonaldi assumes the burden of the political decision except that he then draws back in the face of the observation that even the no- Fiore e Mezzaluna 1986 gres|stoneware cm 39x25,5x15 blest ideals that drive exceptional people are often suffocated by power whose only aim in self-conservation.“I do not have truth in my pocket but I can say that power is still an ugly beast. At the time, but today too, I saw that power becoming an end in itself. And this is terrible.” Then Federico Bonaldi continues to move his hands and create ceramics and cuchi because, as he has loved to say for some time, “when working I feel alive in my personal battle with death.” Natura morta olio su tela|oil on canvas cm 65x105 42 La mela e il pane 1981 olio su tela|oil on canvas cm 50x50 GIORGIO SCALCO by Marco Goldin * Around 1980, Scalco initiated his best known visions of weather, dense with melancholy pages but always linked to the natural movement of the seasons. This renewed ascension, which marks out time within the immensity of nature, is all bound to the earth, to its fruits, to the people who walk on it. [...] Scalco carves a niche in this invulnerable and almost hermetic world in which the air circulates Paesaggio sull’altopiano olio su tela|oil on canvas cm 75x90 with great masses of clouds, gusts of snow and invasions of fogs. He gives life to one of the most touching moments in recent landscape painting in Italy, free from the constraints of any school or aggregation of content, interested only in rendering the timbre, the impression which that hidden colour, the colour of the soul, leaves on the things described. [...] It was therefore around the mid eighties that this process started off with several large interiors of mute dialogue or of undefended, trembling expectation, right up to more incisive figures which mark out their contours in the resistant darkness; but in the landscape in a manner that appears more aware and dense with troubled sadnesses. There is a 1986 picture which opens the Sette Comuni series with its stagnant and clouded beauty; Altopiano dopo la pioggia (Plateau after the rain) is an inversion of passage of the discolouring, windy and swarming weather. Here as in certain other landscapes of plains - in Veneto, Tuscany or Lazio - is the calming of the light, the insistence of a natural epiphany, seen through the blossoming of peaches or the weave of the earth in autumn: lines, filaments, streaks which intersect the horizon and cross it, leaving the countryside completely scratched with light, moss, briers and announced dawns. And so the landscapes at the limit of the mountains, an empty house or a meadow of chestnut trees, extend without displaying anything of the traditional nineteenth century view. But then, as a unitary group as never before, the pictures from 1993 contain within themselves the miracle of a possessed eternity, of an increasingly silent intermittence of thought and in several splendid still lives they achieve a total identity with the hill valleys and the great barren or snow-covered plain. Conceived as a single thing of the mind and of the heart, they are the result of a still, of a photogram blocked and torn from the narrative, isolated in the glacial emotion of absolute time. [...] For Scalco, the precision of the geographical location, its changing with the seasons in identical confident repetitions, in the act of painting, constituted his arrival in a welcoming harbour. All that remains is the torment of that snowy, cloudy, yellowish smoky light which never ceases to sting the strings of the heart from its unexplored border. As if it were the appointment already fixed, the encounter that had always been marked out for him, the painter shows that he wants to head to where that border plunges deepest into the heights. And of course this time is the contemporary world, full of criticalities of various kinds in which man is seen as the absolute star. Born in Isernia in 1948, Tamburro initially studied at the local art school before leaving in 1966 to attend the Accademia di Belle Arti in Naples and later the Academy in Rome under the guidance of Franco Gentilini. In 1968 he was already a collaborator of the set designer, Filippo Senerchia, and produced the pictorial parts of many of his sets, including one in the Flavio Vespasiano Theatre in Rieti. He moved to Perugia at the beginning of the seventies and frequented the “Cenacolo” cultural club in the Umbrian capital. At the same time he began intense exhibitive activities which attracted the attention of critics towards his works with their characteristic chromatism, highly distinguished by a gestural vigour in which neo-impressionist elements reverberate. The figurative traces will remain constantly present in the output of Tamburro who knows how to reinforce its expressivity and power with refined skill rich in technical elements of consideration effectiveness. In the middle of the nineties Tamburro began to exhibit and achieve success in the United States too: in Toronto and then in Europe in Barcelona, Munich and Ausburg. His impetuous treatment of colour, while precise and calibrated with a masterly instinct within clearly defined forms, brings together themes and narrative systems in which figures and objects assume equally important roles, compared with colour, drawing significant details and expressive intensity from the combination. Women and men with strange fates (which at times recall the solitary heroes of Hopper, at times the languid and erotic atmospheres of Balthus, and at times even the dramatic figures of Bacon and Freud) are living presences in a composite world, with ceaseless mutability and unsettling metamorphoses. The painting, often harsh, with aggressive foregrounds or with reiterations of elements of modernity - traffic choking the streets, deckchairs on a crowded, almost clogged beach - effects a disaggregation of the figurative structure aimed at transmitting a sensation of unease, of existential malaise. Sometimes, instead, the description of the objects assumes a calmer, more peaceful rhythm: a still life, a portrait of a young girl, a bicycle abandoned beside a pile of shells, propose the view of a world which brightens up after the metropolitan battles, beyond the quagmires of loneliness, in the composed and re-conquered silence. It is the rhythm of the gesture, the rarefaction or the concentration of the sign, which becomes feverish at times, which determines the time of the image. Both - gesture and sign - are used with great awareness and capacity of control if the apparent result is that of a passion which transcends, overflowing the limits. This dosage below the sign which links the various formal aspects and the chromatic and compositional components constitutes the secret attraction of Tamburo’s works. (G.G.) Una serie di disegni inediti saranno poi apprezzabili presso il Museo Civico di Belluno, assieme alle opere del maestro già presenti in sede. sopra|above Crocifissione bronzo|bronze cm 78x48,5 a sinistra|left Fauno e ninfa 1981 matita Contè su carta intelata|Contè pencil on canvas-backed paper cm 100x130 a destra, dall’alto|right, from the top Notti a Rio 1983 bronzo|bronze cm 92x32x28 Sergente nella steppa 1966 bronzo|bronze Studio di Augusto Murer ora Museo, Falcade (Bl) Augusto Murer Studio, now a Museum, Falcade (Bl) 50 WOOD CARVINGS AND BRONZES OF THE DOLOMITES AUGUSTO MURER BETWEEN TRADITION AND INNOVATION Augusto Murer was born in Falcade (Bl) in 1922, and died in Padova in 1985. This year an important exhibition Wood Carvings and Bronzes of the Dolomites marks the 25th anniversary of his death and is dedicated to his memory. Trained at the art school of Ortisei, the artist later came in contact with Arturo Martini and after the war, made a name for himself nationally, and received critical appraisal from numerous important artists of his time. In Murer’s works, the component which deals with our existence stimulates us to reflect upon how man can identify with the whole of humanity. Various themes run throughout both his sculptural and graphic-pictorial works: life in primis, history, memory. Murer knew how to communicate the struggle of daily life, his works emit life and energy, testimonies to the sentiments and hopes of humankind. His is a real humanity, symbol of the daily struggle for life, the values of freedom and peace. Everything is intimately linked to the life of the artist, to his experience as a man of the mountains, coy but sincere, and convinced that man can actually realise a better world. His monumental works denounce violence, praising freedom and life, and recounting history through the eyes of someone who has experienced it first hand. Other works deal with themes such as motherhood, life, death, work, love, real values for an artist who, with his piety, constantly meditated upon the meaning of our existence. In his works, a sensitivity for line is transmitted with plastic vigour, in some cases synthetic and squared, and in others powerfully modulated alternately by smooth and rough surfaces. At the centre of the conception of Murer’s works is a profound willingness to communicate which is translated into body and form, expressions of painful and poetic moments, synonymous with our existence. Artistic inspiration comes directly from daily acts, from feelings drawn from reality, analysed with a lucid rationality which highlights the most hidden and inner aspects, resulting in a fusion of symbolic and significant elements. A message that is relevant to present day, because it is fruit of a collection of civil and moral values and of pure moments of high lyricism. The exhibition Wood Carvings and Bronzes of the Dolomites will be displayed in the Palazzo Crepadona at Belluno, to finally pay tribute to Murer who in terms of artistic and cultural importance is definitely on par with other artists previously exhibited in Crepadona (most recently Andrea Brustolon). The exhibition will also extend outdoors into the gardens of Piazza Martiri, where the artist had already produced some bronzes to mourn the events of 1945. A series of unedited drawings will be displayed at the Museum of Belluno, along with other works by the artist already housed at the museum. 30|09|2010 - 06|01|2011 Belluno Palazzo Crepadona Museo Civico Giardini di Piazza Martiri Maternità (part.) bronzo|bronze cm 125x136x66 Rinascimento tra Veneto e Friuli. 1450-1550 Portogruaro (Ve) DA VEDERE TO SEE Giovanni Martini Tony Cragg. (Giuseppe Blando) The show organized in Collegio Marconi, the historical complex of the old seminary, makes it possible to examine the production of the Renaissance between Veneto and Friuli. The territory between the Rivers Livenza and Tagliamento belong to the ancient diocese of Concordia and offers visitors completely original artistic output, distinguishing itself from the art generated in Venice and from the artistic legacy in Friuli, much more sensitive to Northern influences. The exhibition is being promoted by the Veneto Region, the Commune of Portogruaro, the Fine Arts and Ethnoanthropology Office, and the Provinces of Verona, Belluno, Padua and Treviso. The artistic personalities featured include Andrea Bellunello , Pietro di San Vito and Gianfranco di Tolomeo. This contrast reaches its highest level with the work of Cima da Conegliano and of Giovanni Martini from Udine, featured in a particular manner in two important altarpieces which belong respectively to the churches of San Francesco and of Sant’ Andrea. The project’s merit is that it has restored the cultural wealth of the territorial heritage, and made possible the recovery and restitution of Andrea Bellunello’s wooden Virgins and much of Giovanni Martini pictorial output. Catalogo Marsilio. (G.B.) The show exhibits around forty works by the British sculptor Tony Cragg (Liverpool 1949) in the framework of an exhibition project especially planned for the spaces of Ca’ Pesaro. Various materials are used: glass, bronze, steel, plastic, wood and stone brought together along with drawings, preparatory drafts and watercolours created in thirty years of activity from the eighties, virtually none of them exhibited in Italy to date. These are works that perfectly document the versatility of the languages and products of the artist’s work and establish comparisons with the spaces and works permanently on display in the museum. Cragg’s research gives rise to an analysis of the materials and suggestions that derive from the same, inspired by nature; he does not simulate permanently recognizable forms but is able to assume the characteristics of mutation and bioformism from the natural world, to release forms and images as thoughts, intended as intersections of artistic and scientific knowledge. Curated by Silvio Fuso and Jon Wood, the exhibition is a coproduction of Venice’s Fondazione Musei Civici and KunstMeran/Merano Arte. The Culture Department of the Commune of Padua proposes the first edition this autumn of “RAM nel segno della creatività, Padova 2010” a series of initiatives, exhibitions, meetings, screenings, debates, didactic paths and workshops in various exhibition areas and public spaces around the city, with the intention of putting the most modern experiences in painting, sculpture, applied arts and new media into focus. The aim is to create a dialogue on the new creative trends along a path capable of representing multiple expressions, including on-line creativity and the diffusion of amateur video on the You Tube site, a phenomenon to which the Art//Tube exhibition-experiment, conceived and curated by Guido Bartorelli, is dedicated. Five projectors will show a selection of 100 amateur videos, selected on the basis of their quality by a group of university students in the artistic framework. The aim of this selection is to supply a representative sample of the best amateur creativity available online. The other 5 video screenings will show the public videos specially commissioned from 5 artists of international fame: Botto & Bruno, Stefano Cagol, Nicola Gobbetto, Kensuke Koike, and ZimmerFrei. (G.B.) Anticipated by some works of the artist already displayed or “disseminated” on the first floor, the exhibition occupies the whole vast environment on the second floor of the Museum and presents large-scale canvasses along with sculptures and other small format works conceived by Marco Tirelli (Rome, 1956) for these spaces. The paintings depict abstract architectural and geometrical elements which allude to states of indeterminacy and passage. Essential forms in which the physical object becomes a pretext for crossing the boundary between light and shadow, establishing a metaphysical relationship with space: here the architecture dilates until it disappears in an illusory monochrome which envelops and involves the viewer, creating an alienating space, a window for perception, an opening for meditation. The catalogue is published by Skira with a text by Francesco Poli. (G.B.) Mauro Staccioli. Stanley Kubrick is known to the greater public as the director of highly successful cinematographic masterpieces, but the approach of the American filmmaker to the world of the visual arts took place through photography. He inherited this passion from his father and it led him to undertake his first job as a photo-reporter when he was only 17 for the American magazine, Look, and which he left five years later to dedicate himself full time to the cinema, bringing with him a wealth of knowledge and experience which would be fundamental in his brilliant career as a director. The exhibition collects two hundred photographs, many printed from the original negatives, exhibited in sequence to form stories through images in the classic Look style, and bears witness to Kubrick’s attitude towards the image, starting from the static one of photography, right from a very early age and before his genius with moving pictures appeared. Photography is inseparably associated with film production just as this is closely linked to the locations in which the actors move and the story unfolds. A singular photography exhibition, with shots in black and white, retraces the main stages of the regional locations which made the history of the Italian cinema during the thirty years from the sixties to the nineties, from Michelangelo Antonioni’s “L’avventura” shot in 1960, to “Che ora è?” made by Ettore Scola in 1989. Fifty works by different authors, mainly set photographers, illustrate the diversified Italian settings of the Italian landscapes chosen by directors as locations for telling very different stories: from rural landscapes to urban ones, from small intimate and collected villages to anonymous and rundown suburbs. The sets represented include, among others, those of Il sorpasso by Dino Risi (1962), Vaghe stelle dell’orsa by Luchino Visconti (1965), Uccellacci e uccellini by Pier Paolo Pasolini (1966), Per grazia ricevuta by Nino Manfredi (1971), Romanzo popolare by Mario Monicelli (1974), La casa dalle finestre che ridono by Pupi Avati (1976), Padre padrone by Paolo and Vittorio Taviani (1977), and Non ci resta che piangere by Benigni and Troisi (1985). The exhibition is the second part of a three-stage three-year project which will conclude next year and which aims to represent the film sets from the end of the war to the present through images. The show is promoted by the Centro Cinema Città di Cesena, the Venice Biennale, the Emilia-Romagna Region and Annecy Cinéma Italien. 02|09|2010 - 02|10|2010 Centro Congressi Palazzo dell’Ex Casinò Lungomare Marconi, 30 30126 Venezia www.veniceconvention.com Mario De Biasi. GaBLs was established at the end of 2008 by Gianluca D’Incà Levis, and deals with young contemporary art. The project initially functioned as an independent “artistic breedingground”, for the most creative energies active in the area, along with the artists from Belluno who were already well-known nationally. GaBLs subsequently began to collaborate externally with other entities, galleries, and groups; and to involve new artists from throughout the world in its productions in Italy and abroad. Morago The Sante Moretto Arte Contemporanea Gallery was established in 1991. The gallery has grown since then and has now become one of the most important in Vicenza and also participates in fairs in the sector in Padua and Vicenza. Over the years the gallery has hosted one-man shows of some of the greatest twentiethcentury Italian artists, renowned nationally and internationally, such as: Carmi, Carmassi, Ceccobelli, Corpora, Dorazio, Mastroianni, Scialoja, Soldati, De Chirico, Griffa, Turcato, Trubbiani and Vago. Leading critics and art historians including Dino Formaggio and Vittorio Sgarbi, present all the personal and collective shows. Works by all the artists presented over the years are always present in the gallery. At the moment the Sante Moretto Gallery is hosting a collective show of Veneto artists as a homage to the land in which it resides, after which, on 13 November 2010, a one-man show dedicated by Morago will be inaugurated, with the critical presentation by Massimo Rizzante. His inspiration derives from the places where the artist lives, the River Sile environment with its silent waters, its blue pools, its hidden springs, its flowing between the banks dense with roots and tree trunks, and its paths between the green of the bushes and of the plants, and of cultivated and fallow fields. This is the complex cosmos, in continuous metamorphosis, in perpetually renewed and changing contact with the vital pervasive flow of the waters with the earth, the air, the sky and in the kaleidoscopic vibration of light and colour, that constitutes the fulcrum around which the painter’s investigations concentrate. The Maison D’Art Cultural Centre is renowned in the city of Padua for its art galleries with the refinement of old drawing rooms and for the Maison’s Atelier where numerous artistic training courses are held. Founded by Carla D’Aquino, Mariagrazia Tommasini and Anna Tommasini, and with Carla D’Aquino heading the critical sector with help from Maria Palladino, it is a club which offers a broad informative panorama of art masters both at national and international level as well as emerging artists by means of countless art shows which have been held successfully for various years. The visual arts shows are presented by the President and Academician, Carla d’Aquino, who also proposes them through the television circuit, combined with theatrical and musical events. From September to November the Maison D’Art offers the public several interesting shows dedicated to Giorgio Ravazzolo, Giuseppe Vio, Giuseppe Toma and Ferdinando Scarpa. The galleries are located in Via San M. Solferino n. 66, in Via Cesare Battisti n. 77 and in Via S. Sofia n. 92. 25|09|2010 - 20|10|2010 Galleria Flaviostocco Borgo Pieve, 21 31033 Castelfranco Veneto (Tv) Tel + 39 0423495661 www.flaviostocco.it [email protected] Giuseppe Vio Maison d’Art Via Cesare Battisti, 77 35121 Padova Tel +39 3405703484 Galleria Il Melone Rovigo Laura Gioioso Laura Gioso vive e lavora a Rovigo. Laura Gioso lives and works in Rovigo. The peculiar features of her works are the lyricism, light, poetry and intimacy of her painting. Colour is the protagonist, not form which, indeed, depends on the colour itself, creator of illusions and emotions. The figures in her watercolours and acrylics on canvas are vague and evanescent, and almost lose themselves in the sublimation of tenuous colours. You must not let yourself be deceived however: it is wrong to think that the artist’s painting is superficial and non-perspective, because where there are no spatial references, the veiling of the colour and the pictorial gesture create depth. Laura Gioso’s inspiration springs from music and nature: when you look at her works you hear the sounds and vibrations of the world that surrounds us. The ORON population live in the Cross River area, south-east of Nigeria. The “EKPU” were celebration statues of important people, kept in the sanctuaries and honoured twice a year. The two statues exhibited are of large size (cm. 104 and cm. 109). They are monoxiles and each obviously sculpted out of a big tree. Both have a long and pointed twisted beard to add to the solemn expression of the large faces with bulbous hairstyle or hat. The rounded body with tribal scarifications end with short legs. The hands hold objects belonging to the represented person. Giuseppe Mastromatteo, a talent discovered by the renowned photographer, Oliviero Toscani, began his artistic path by approaching the world of advertising and creative photography, and still lives and works in New York where he is still involved in the communications world. In his portraits, the artist shows transfigured subjects, reconstructed like collages by means of a game of superimpositions, or without tension or expressiveness, perfect and almost surreal creations. Thanks to his refined photographic technologies, Mastromatteo proposes images on the borderline between advertising and that of pure research in front of which the observer feels attraction and unease. Enrico Minato The artistic journey of Enrico Minato start from the analysis of the evocative potential of the word in aphoristic form, which is typical of poetic language. His works illustrate the need of restore the meaning of the signs, find the exceptional nature of it, to show that a fertile and growing culture is grown in a free environment. Freedom of expression, seeing us and see everything with the lens of irony. The multi-faceted personality of the artist seeks to undermine the conscience and to cause disorientation, to retrieve the emotion and the delicacy of things. Like an underground river, Maria Baldan’s art suddenly comes out and enchants. Maria Baldan’s solo exhibition, entitled “Maria Baldan: crea(na)tura” curated by Franco Batacchi and Franca Sanna, is set in the Perl’A Gallery’ s large spaces, a few steps from Palazzo Grassi. There’s also a catalogue with Franco Batacchi and Maria Irma Mariotti’s glowing critiques. The show has three sections: in the first one you may smell the sea and the river, in the second one the frozen earth predominates and in the last one, set in a cosy loft, some examples of graphic art are presented. There are forty oeuvres, some of large size, to represent over fifty years of art.Maria Baldan is not yet well-known to the general public but, this show and some time could give her the fame she undoubtedly deserves. 03|10|2010 - 08|11|2010 Perl’A Art Gallery Salizada San Samuele, San Marco 3216 30124 Venezia Tel +39 0412413218 www.perlagalleryvenice.it [email protected] Maria Baldan 10|10|2010 - 07|11|2010 Spazio Espositivo Roberto Nicoletti Architettura e Design Via Roma 61/63 31040 Pederobba (Tv) Tel +39 0423648371 www.robertonicoletti.it [email protected] 28|08|2010 - 28|10|2010 Galleria Totem-Il Canale Accademia, 878 B 30123 Venezia Tel/Fax +39 0415223641 www.totemilcanale.com [email protected] Giudecca 795 Art Gallery Venezia Anti Gallery Venezia Panto Textile Art Treviso Renato Lipari Renato Lipari, born in Milan, lives and works in Palermo. Since the early years of the century his language has been shifting towards a rigorous investigation of the surface, before defining a conceptuality of denunciation, symbolically dramatic, before then approaching the characteristics of “Analytical Painting” to the exponents of which he is particularly linked. The use of shredded euros (sent as waste by the banks) gives life, as Marina Giordano writes, to “tonal impastos obtained from the stratification of paste and paper money (...) which gives life to scenarios which are almost cosmic, swarming galaxies of miniscule pixels veering case by case towards green, pink, grey, blue and violet from which forms emerge which at times are linear and geometrical and other times organic, biomorphic, similar to ectoplasms, fluctuating cells which seem to grow gigantically under the lens of the microscope.” Marcello Palminteri was born in Busto Arsizio (Va) in 1976. He attended artistic high school and the Fine Arts Academy in Palermo. In 1993, after a brief informal period, he undertook research based on the sign, dense and repeated, modulated inside a large minimal geometrical scheme. As Francesco Gallo writes “the cultural and iconographic references in the works of Marcello Palminteri are easy to sense and constitute a strength as they are placed in a precise channel in which the originality is the fruit of manoeuvring between the already seen and the already done, therefore with an appreciable added value, always attentive to avoiding the pitfalls of possible monotony. The value of this painting is largely due to its essentiality and to its very own abstract and free nature in the manner of Carla Accardi or of Dadamaino.” He lives and works in Bassano del Grappa, Naples and Palermo.
