Non “natura morte”, dunque, ma una fi- XVIII A fter claiming attention from the meanderings of the tango, hero of his own personal exhibition set up in 2005 in Poltu Quatu, now Massimo Pennacchini turns his attention to Urban Interiors. Conceived as a sort of notebook during his travels, his Interni Urbani was born out of subtle observation and awareness; distinguishing features of this artist’s study to capture the heart of the metropolises: the multicoloured shop windows in their city centres, brightly lit shop fronts, taxis, orange trams, historic buildings, art deco street lamps and people frenetically shopping. This artist spent a great deal of time taking photographs, like a sentimental reporter or an ardent tourist, full-scale shots and tiny details, above all being taken in with the play of light reflected in the shop windows, in which the city and the life of its inhabitants is unwittingly mirrored. Together with this new production, the artist exhibits his Interiors/Externals (Interni/Esterni). Pennacchini’s sense of space breaks down ancient doors and walls, beneath the spotlight of disenchanted observation, using poin- SmeraldArte 2007 18/19 pennacchini 5-07-2007 12:04 Pagina XIX Speciale SmeraldArte 3. Fragments of landscapes and details of reality, of no importance whether man-made or natural. Not idealistic flights towards unrealistic fantasies, but images of simple objects that elevate to archetypes, dragging forth the simple exterior image only to transform it into a symbolic message. Without artificial mannerisms, avoiding suggestive sensations, this artist materialises with meticulous lucid expressiveness, symbolic imaginary of an era that is looking for a horizon of sense, even if it means starting from the scrutiny of our surrounding reality. In this context the painter harmonises with this kind of reality and his own perception of interiorisation: he tries not to interpret the world but to re-propose a point of equilibrium between the portrayed object and the intimate feeling it triggers, involving the attentive observer in his research. We should bear in mind that Pennacchini was the first artist to inaugurate encounters with art at Poltu Quata after his experiences in Venice and New York. Giulio Caporaso 5.
