Bhuyan. I During the Summer Mela event that promotes Indian culture and richness in Italy, we interviewed the Director of the Indian Tourism Agency in Italy, Gobind C. Bhuyan. Thanks to him, we gained greater insight into the agency's communication strategies for better explaining the natural and cultural richness of India to Italians, as well as discovering sites and natural beauties of the country that are still little known and not on the most popular tourist itineraries. The Summer Mela is a large summer festival, analogous to the colorful Indian celebrations for welcoming the season. Mr. Bhuyan, can you give us some figures regarding Italian tourism to India? We still do not have the official data but the most recent statistics show that nearly 110,000 Italian tourists visited India during the past year. As regards 2013, the first 5 months, from January to May, have been successful even if the growth rate is lower than that forecast. What are your objectives for 2013? Given the market scenario and the promotional efforts made, our objective is to increase tourism by at least 15% compared to 2012 . What are your promotional and marketing plans for further promoting the image of India in our country? We changed the concept of our international campaign to a great extent for 2013. The campaign “Incredible India,” the one which has been the most successful, has so far been concentrated on the destination. Now, however, we intend to target consumers as part of our new initiatives. The slogan will in fact be “Find what you are looking for.” We shall concentrate on the experience of tourists, their emotions and sensations which are quite diverse and varied for each individual. With this campaign, we want to tell people, notwithstanding the needs of each individual tourist, that everyone can find what they are looking for in India. Based precisely on this, we are telling the international audience and travel agencies that India is a perfect year-round destination because it offers everything that anyone might desire. Wellness and Ayurveda, spas and resorts, seaside tourism, health… but also golf courses, camp grounds, cruises; and then, uncontaminated nature and among the richest fauna in the world. What steps have you taken to guarantee the safety of tourists? The Ministry of Tourism has made a strong commitment to developing responsible tourism that is completely safe for all tourists that come to India. In India, the safety of tourists is an absolute priority. We have a special “tourist police” working in the most popular tourism locations. The Ministry monitors the situation constantly in order to prevent crime against tourists to the greatest extent possible. How would you judge the collaboration with Italian tour operators? Our collaboration with Italian tour operators is constant and productive and is growing every day. We are further expanding cooperation to extend our activity throughout Italy. What are the tourist products and cities in India that appeal the most to Italians? What are those that you are trying to promote the most? Undoubtedly the Golden Triangle of Delhi-Agra-Jaipur is still the area that draws the highest number of Italians, with an extension towards the areas of Varanasi, Khajuraho, Udaipur, Jodhpur and Amritsar. The Kerala continues to capture the fantasy and imagination of Italians. But also Orissa, Madhya Pradesh and Tamilnadu are coming into their own as tourist destinations with great appeal. We are working to promote many other destinations and products for Italian tourists, such as the clean and serene beaches on the Andaman Islands, the lagoons with houseboats in Kerala, the exclusive ayurvedic treatment centers and the thermal springs; luxury trains such as the Maharaja Express, the Palace-on-Wheels, the Golden Chariot; gems such as the Palace Hotel, but also unforgettable events such as Bollywood-driven, our colorful fairs and festivals such as Maha Kumbh Mela, Holi and Diwali. Unforgettable events and attractions that appeal to tourists are infinite, impossible to name them all! 88
