122 entrants from 11 European countries took part at the 2007 Pro Carton Ecma awards, the annual competition reserved for the European paper&cardboard converting industry. And the Italians played their part, with three winners out of thirteen projects presented. Paper&cardboard converting, an undisputed talent Three Italian companies won the first prize at the Pro Carton Ecma Award 2007. «We are very satisfied with the result. Indeed Italy has always distinguished itself at international level in the field of design and creativity, and this time too our winners were good at combining aesthetics and functionality». Thus Piero Capodieci, President of Pro Carton Italia commented the exploit of Italian paper&cardboard converting, whose creations (along 30 • 10/07 with the other winners) will be on show in the Pro Carton stand at Interpack (Düsseldorf, 24th-30th April 2008) and Drupa (29th May 11th June 2008, in the same city). Italian vocation - The Veuve Cliquot box produced by Cartografica Pusterla won the prize in the Beverage category. The jury in fact considered it an “intelligent” pack, capable of opening completely from the top with simplicity, also managing to • Infine, il Last Minute display realizzato da Lucaprint SpA ha vinto nella sezione Shelf Ready e display packaging. • The Cocoa Book Collection by Box Marche, a box of chocolates in the shape of a book, was awarded in the Patisserie category: the idea seen as a whole and the high print quality and finish led to the creation of a high level pack for a top quality product. • Lastly, the Last Minute display made by Lucaprint SpA won the Shelf Ready and display packaging section. According to the panel in fact, the display case for women’s linen stood out for its lively choice of colors, but also for its practical nature the ease with which it can be recognised at the salespoints. The other awards - The winner of the new “Sustainability” category was the sugar carton produced by the Edelmann Group using Stora Enso board, featuring a single piece of cardboard that replaces the preceding three-piece box made in plastic and paper. • The Edelmann Group also won in the “Most Innovative Pack” category. Using special inks and holographic print, the design printed on the box seems to fluctuate and move. The cardboard was supplied by Mead Westvaco. • Aug, Heinrigs Druck & Verpackung, according to the jury, deserved the “Carton of the Year” for the excellent structural project and technique used. They created a container for chocolates with slide opening that once opened turns into a table display case. The material was produced by Stora Enso. Marketing & Design Ideas&Trends Aerosol: awarded innovation This year’s “World Aluminium Aerosol Can Award” of the International Organisation of Aluminium Aerosol Container Manufacturers (Aerobal) impressively demonstrated the innovative drive and technological progress of the aluminium aerosol can industry. • The winner in the category “cans launched on the market” was the Right Guard RGX Body Spray can produced by Exal (USA) for the Dial Corporation. When The Dial Corporation was looking for a new container design for their upcoming launch of the Right Guard RGX Body Spray line, Exal responded with a masculine embossed and debossed can design. • Two of the awarded prototypes were produced by the company Tubex (D). According to the motto “Silence is golden” Tubex created the “silent can” which is flocked at the bottom and gives a soft and silky impression. The second awarded Tubex innovation is an aluminium can coated with a varnish with a special glittering effect. The third awarded prototype is the first shaped barrier pressure pack can produced by Nussbaum (CH/D). The barrier pressure pack (BPP) system is a patented hightech development from Nussbaum. FOOD Italian food exports have improved, but the ratio between exports and total turnover of the sector is below the European average. A proposal from Veronafiere, organizer of Agrifood, to give the companies in the segment a boost. Communicate to compete Italian food exports for 2007 should close the year with positive results: according to figures announced by Istat for prepared food products alone, an increase of 6% featured in the first five months compared to the same period the year previous, reaching the 2.5 billion Euro mark. Despite the good run over the last few years, Italy’s share of exports seen against total turnover in the sector is very low. One only has to think of the gap existing with France and Germany, countries that in 2006 managed to respectively export 20 and 22% of their output, against Italy’s 15.2%. This is the best result over the last decade (with exports standing at 16.7 billion Euro, 7.7% up on 2005) but all the same below the EC average, that stands at 18%. The proposal - Hence it becomes important to define effective communication and marketing strategies to bring Italy’s food products to the dinner tables of consumers the world over. At Agrifood (International Exhibition of Italian food, Verona 16th -18th November) this will be discussed in a workshop with McCann Erikson, leading name in the world in communication and partner of many Italian and multinational food companies. As partner of Agrifood, the important advertising agency will provide a personalised consultancy to the exhibiting companies, first and foremost the small-to-mediumsized concerns that want to compete on the global market. A special ink Sun Chemical has won two gold awards at the European Flexographic Trade Association (EFTA) annual print awards ceremony. The awards recognise the company’s outstanding performance as Supplier of the Year and its contribution to product development and innovation in the Technical Achievement category. The gold award for Technical Achievement was presented to both Sun Chemical and customer DS Smith of Bristol, for the development of a water-based metallic ink that is capable of printing fine tones on clay coated liners without the need of an overprint varnish. Sun Chemical developed the ink in conjunction with DS Smith for use on a corrugated retail ready case for Coors brewery. The right incentive The new method of awarding managers and co-workers - but also fidelization of the best customers - has been imported in Italy from other European countries by the eight founder partners of Elation. The specialty of the company, motivate employees and customers making them a gift of “experiences”… for example a balloon trip above the Alps, a sumptuous dinner, a drive in a Formula 1 racing car, taking part in a non gravitational flight on board a Nasa aircraft, but also safe driving and enogastronomical tasting courses. That is to say an experiential marketing tool with a catalogue of over 3000 different experiences all over Italy, worth from 30 to 10,000 Euro. As borne witness to by the over 200 companies that have already chosen Elation in 2007, this 36 • 10/07 ReadytoUse Ideas&Trends incentivation and fidelization system really works. Cooperation all-round Packaging is not only one of the elements around which the success of a product is played, but it is also a key part of the image of brand in itself. Thus the packaging design has to be the expression of the strategic positioning defined upstream for a product or for a brand, only in this way can it be turned into a successful means in the battle for a “place in the sun” in broadscale distribution. These the considerations made by Susanna Bellandi, AD of FutureBrand Gio Rossi Associati, during the last edition of Cibus Roma 2007, before citing some concrete experiences. It is a cereal, yoghurt and fruit based chilled dessert for a female target who are on the lookout for healthy but tasty foods. FutureBrand took part at the entire creative process for developing Frusì: from the initial scouting in selected countries, to inhouse brainstorming with Marketing and R&D, up to encounters with production to check the real feasibility of the product, the choice of the name, up to the design of the pack. The result is a product with a strong personality, calibrated to dialogue with its principal target and fully capable of transmitting its innovatory capacity. Being involved in the very first phases of the process of creation of a new product enables the company to work best was the conclusion reached. It was 1995 when Anja Götz and Christoph Fleckenstein of londesign (Berlin) presented their socalled “monpackaging” for the first time. This is a plastic bottle and top, produced together in one piece in a single material. The spring closure, semicircular in shape, is part of the neck, and it has a hole in it to pour the contents. To close the bottle you only have to push the top forward, thus preventing any liquid from exiting. Pulling it back the bottle is open and ready for use. These bottles are suited for containing liquids of various types, lotions and powders. • In these twelve years, “monopackaging” has received many acknowledgements and prizes; the latest recognition in time to boast of is the nomination for the Design Prize of the German Federal Republic. To cease being anonymous and let oneself be known for elegance and style: with this objective over the last two years Coes has revamped its product packaging. The company, that can now boast over forty years in the hydrothermosanitary sector, has gone ahead with the change while maintaining some key basic elements: clear product communication, make the brand easily recognisable, stand out in visual appeal. The adopting of different colors for the eight lines of product (BluePower, PhoNoFire, Coesprene, Coestilen, Coestherm, Coesklima SuperK, Coesidra and Climatika) has also facilitated their procurability in the storage phases, and has enabled a better product identification by the customer at the salespoint. It appears that the “tiramisù” was invented at Sienna, by the confectioners of the seventeenth century, in occasion of the visit of the Archduke of Tuscany Cosimo III de’ Medici (and hence immediately rebaptised “the Duke’s trifle”). Its fame and popularity is due to its popularity with the court of Florence and the other noble dining halls of the times, where it became the favourite sweet also because it was attributed stimulating and aphrodisiacal properties. Today DS Foods propose a new gluten free ready-to-eat frozen version. The Tiramisù DS joins the range of gluten free foods of the South Tyrolean concern, super specialised in the production of frozen food for people affected with celiac disease (but appreciated, for their taste, by other consumers). Tiramisù DS is prepared, as tradition has it, with a soft sponge-cake filled with cream, and is traded both in 1 kg format for restaurants as well as in the two portion packs (275 g) for domestic consumption. A precious bottle During the last general assembly, last June, the International Packaging Association (IPA) celebrated the first edition of the Innovation Award, that has as a purpose that of awarding the most innovatory and “seductive” metal containers produced over these last years. For the launch, the 14 IPA associates chose Colombo, a metal bottle made by ASA of San Marino for containing olive oil. A first solution of this kind for this segment, Colombo does not require any format change on the bottling line, and compared to the traditional glass bottles offers a better protection to light, is infrangible and reduces the packaging weight by 75%. Colombo is available in sizes from 50, 75 and 100 cl. www.dativo.it + info = www.packmedia.net Edizioni Dativo Srl Via Benigno Crespi 30/2, 20159 Milano Tel. +39 02 69007733 - Fax +39 02 69007664 www.dativo.it - www.packmedia.net [email protected] Marketing & Design ReadytoUse nalizzata, composto da PET12 + PE70.
