This tool not only represented major scientific progress by making it possible to capture the imprint of light clearly and precisely, but was also a different way of getting close to reality, getting to know it and preserving an exact memory of it. This desire to document history in the making accompanied the military campaigns of the start of the century, recording on film battlefields, the faces of key players, landscapes and works of art, in an endeavour to evoke a new visual impression. The spread and simplification of the technique of photography, including among amateurs, and the invention of handheld cameras, La photographie offre un reflet fidèle de l’histoire du xxe siècle. La diffusion et la simplification de la technique photographique, y compris parmi les simples amateurs, et l’invention d’appareils photographiques which were widely used right from the start of the 20th century, meant that non-professionals were also able to enjoy photography, satisfying their desire to be able to recall people and places, travel and life experiences1. The production of simpler equipment and the increas- portatifs, très répandus dès le tout début du xxe siècle, ont permis d’attirer également vers cette activité les nonprofessionnels, qui parvenaient ainsi à satisfaire leur désir de “mémoriser“ des lieux et des personnes, des voyages et des expériences de vie1. La simplification de la technique 1 6 For general information on the use of photography as a historic recording technique, see principally Giulio Bollati, Note su fotografia e storia, in Storia d’Italia, Annali 2, L’Immagine fotografica 18451945, Turin, Einaudi, 1979; Italo Zannier, L’occhio della fotografia. The photography collections devoted to Greece and, in particular, the Aegean Islands, which are part of the collections of the Central Museum of the Risorgimento in Rome, are a real testimony to these methods2. The first, oldest collection is made up of a series of photographs taken during the voyage of King Victor Emanuel III in the Mediterranean3. There are three large albums containing original photographs of places visited during the cruise between 1908 and 1910, which included Sicily, the Greek Islands, Athens and even Istanbul4. These are original photographs taken by the king himself or by Lieutenant Manfredi Gravin5, Fotografie del Risorgimento italiano, M. Pizzo, Gangemi, Rome, 2004. Central Museum of the Risorgimento, Rome (MCRR), MP1, MP2, MP3. 4 The album documents all the different stages in the voyage: Taranto, Athens, Argos, Mycenae, Tinos, Thessaloniki, Izmir, Constantinople and La Spezia. Alongside the political and military events which led to national unification, there was also a concern to make the art and landscapes of Italy and Europe known6. Such views of cities and photographs of landscapes thus continued to be taken in accordance with criteria adopted in earlier centuries by painters on the Grand politiques et militaires qui ont accompagné l’émergence de l’unité nationale, la volonté se faisait jour de faire connaître l’Italie et l’Europe sous un angle artistique et paysager6. These photograph albums are part of the Giustiniani Bandini Gravina collection, cf. Slowly, however, along with these general images which were confined to capturing individual historic moments of particular importance, people also started to photograph less well-known artistic subjects, streets and squares, paintings and frescos, art collections and museums. This trend, which crept in almost on the sly, became with the passage of time increasingly significant and important, forging links with academic circles and connoisseurs8. l’on a commencé à photographier également des sujets artistiques moins connus, routes et places, peintures et fresques, collections d’art et musées. Photographs thus became a souvenir and, consequently, photographic prints began to be collected in albums specifically created for travellers. This was often an aristocratic, intellectual hobby, in which personal skill, use of handheld cameras and aesthetic taste came together. Photos of places visited were often purchased, produced by noteworthy local studios or by eccentric photographers such as Baron Von Gloeden, famous for his photographs of Sicily hanging between Françoise Heilbrun, Die Reise um die Welt. Forscher uns Touristen, in Neue Geschichte der Fotografie, Michel Frizot, Milano, Könemann, 1996, pp. 149-166. 8 In this connection see Collezioni d’Arte e fotografia artistica nell’Italia del Risorgimento; Rome, Gangemi, 2010. Alongside classic views, which take in buildings and ancient sites, there are also specific testimonies to the local way of life with people in traditional costume or particularly evocative glimpses of landscapes. Original and purchased photos are mixed together in a patchwork to create souvenir photograph albums10. The second, most substantial set of photographs, owned by the Museum of the Risorgimento in Rome, relates to the period immediately following the ItaloTurkish war. They were taken around 1913 by Colonel Arturo Faccioli. This is a set of pictures taken for inclusion in the album Le isole dell’Egeo occupate dalle Armi italiane11, which is dedicated to General Giovanni Ameglio, Admiral Leone Viale and Admiral Amero D’Aste Stella, who were among the main players in the Dodecanese conflict. When, on 9 October 1911, the Italian contingent left for the war with Turkey, which was primarily fought out in Libya and Tripoli, the scope of the attack was broadened – “it was therefore necessary to extend the invasion to other islands in the South Aegean [and the] largest of these islands of the Southern Sporades ... Rhodes” – to include the Greek islands carefully described in the photograph albumin a skilful combination of geographical and historical information, starting with Rhodes: “The whole island, The photograph entitled “Giovane di Taormina”, dated 1904. The Central Museum of the Risorgimento also has the original positives grouped together in MCRR volume Cass XXIII(19). This contains pictures of the islands of Rhodes, Kos, Tilos, Symi, Nisyros, Lipsi, Karpathos, Kasos, Kalymnos, Leros, Astypalaia, Halki and Patmos, as well as local scenes and costumes. There are some marble caves. There follows a description of a number of islands, including Halki, Tilos, Symi and Nisyros, which combines more specific geographical information with anecdotes taken from history or local legend: “The legend of the women of Kos said that they killed their husbands because they had been warmongering for a long time in Asia Minor and had left them to grow all the crops on the island; and the legend of the fortified town of Kefalos told of a bold, armed man on a horse who had killed a snake that was devouring man and beast.” The photographs of the islands are key to getting inside this mysterious, mythical world, and to coming face to face with classical antiquity and Ancient Greece. They thus include numerous pictures recording classical and archaeological ruins and traditions related to the Knights of Rhodes – “after the Greek myths, the most interesting accounts are those of the Knights”. { Culture } expo 17 { EN } { FR } Faccioli’s photograph album acquaints us with new contemporary publishing approaches, with pages displaying a number of different images, using the most up-to-date printing technology12. The page is designed to be an evocative collage, where a number of photographs combine to produce a new, overall picture with several parts: a sort of photo collage – as had previously been used in the mid-19th Century by Disderi – but given a more “contemporary” feel reflecting the graphic style used in the periodicals of the time. 12 18 The editor, Brunner di Como, was one of the most important art photographers of the time, and had a flourishing postcard and photograph book business. This was a way of diverting images away from their original, more specific “military” function towards a recording or ethnographical role: in addition to celebrating a victory, the views of the places displayed became a way of acquainting the public with far-off lands, customs and traditions, ancient sites and fine arts13. It is no coincidence that the panoramic views use contrast and atmospheric effects to add suggestions of emotion: from the twilight of dusk to the effect of refraction by the sea; from contrast to the effects of clouds in the penumbra of the narrow alleyways of towns. 13 Olivier Lugon, Lo stile documentario in fotografia da August Sander a Walker Evans 1920-1945, Electa, Milan, 2008, p.15. 13 Olivier Lugon, Lo stile documentario in fotografia da August Sander a Walker Evans 1920-1945, Electa, Milan, 2008, p.15. { Culture } expo 19 Arturo Faccioli, La cinta fortificata di Rodi.
