Basically speaking, this means putting the foot down in order to improve the quality and performance of the materials used Metef - competition via innovation Metef - competizione attraverso l’innovazione “La concorrenza sempre più forte dei Paesi emergenti impone alle aziende del settore dei non ferrosi la ricerca di nuovi vantaggi competitivi. This definitely calls for the resources necessary to effect investments, but upstream, what is needed are ideas and knowhow. Metef meets this need because, as well as being a ‘display’ of products, it is also an important conveyer of know-how and an opportunity for world-level experts in the sector to exchange ideas and views”. These were the words used on 9th February by Mario Conserva, Managing Director of Edimet, to show the Industrial Association of Brescia the 6th 52 edition of Metef, scheduled this year between 17th and 20th May. Gianfranco Tosini, head of the A.I.B. (the Industrial Association of Brescia), opened the meeting, by presenting a series of macroeconomic figures from which it is possible to deduce that in 2006 economic growth will not be very dynamic in the euro area (+1.8%), while it will continue at highly satisfactory levels in emerging countries - first of all in China and India, to which are attributed growth rates of about 8.2 and 6.3% respectively (Fig. 1). 1). In relation to the price trend, a more thorough analysis was conducted by Paolo Kauffmann, Sole Director of Kauffmann and Sons. There are three main factors which determine price trend: the equilibrium between supply and demand, geo-political factors and financial flows; according to this accredited financial analyst, it is among these elements that we should look for the cause of the 45% rise in 20 weeks in aluminium prices (from 1,800 to 2,650 dollars/tonne). If we examine supply and demand in the period between 2006 and 2007, we can envisage a balanced situation with attention being paid to energy and alumina costs. If we look at geo-political factors, we definitely see new tension in Iran and Iraq which could have repercussions on the volatile nature of oil prices and therefore on those of aluminium. What is more, these crisis situations could represent counterblows to the growth of the economy and, on reflection on consumption of non-ferrous metals. 5) Pagina 54 Kauffmann comments, “Anyhow, none of the cases examined so far would explain such a strong rise in quotations. There are obviously certain forces entering the commodities market which go beyond the consideration of the two factors. These forces are financial flows - pension funds, hedge funds, banks, retail investors - who have had access to the commodities markets either directly or via index funds (Slides 6 and 7). For their nature, these types of investments are also called “invisible acquisitions”. At this point, the spontaneous question is: are we facing a bubble of speculation or has the entry of these investment factors altered the value of these assets, inaugurating a great new cycle in commodities? Kauffmann concludes that the answer should be sought in the investment timing of these funds. The longer the timing of the assets, the more ground will be gained by the idea that these values will remain high. Vice versa, if the timing is short, the price of non-ferrous metals will once more occupy a lower position. Having accepted the advice of Kauffmann to look for the answer above all in the mid term, participants in the conference were able to witness the fourth and last intervention of the day: the expected numbers and the organization of Metef 2006 by Stefano Zanolini. The slides pre- Relative price performance of aluminium (indexed Dec 2004=100) Courtesy of Brook Hunt 54 ALUMINIUM AND ITS ALLOYS - FEBRUARY 2006 vano anche le quotazioni medie annuali del metallo, con il sostenuto aumento realizzatosi nel 2005 sia per l’alluminio che per gli altri non ferrosi (fig. 5). Queste forze sono i flussi finanziari - fondi pensione, hedge funds, banche, investitori retail - che hanno avuto accesso ai mercati delle commodities o in modo diretto oppure attraverso i fondi indice (figure 6 e Al Febbraio 2006 29-03-2006 16:54 Pagina 55 current affairs sented illustrated interesting developments for the international exhibition which between 17th and 20th May will bring together in Montichiari, Brescia, the entire production chain of aluminium and other non-ferrous metals and the world of diecasting and foundry with a vast offer in terms 7) of both the exhibition itself and the programme of conferences. In fact, it is only by promoting the comparison of ideas and the exchange of know-how that Metef can be the ideal venue for achieving the quality leap necessary for the survival of the Western metal industry. 7).
