“DNA doesn’t know anything and doesn’t care about anything. The DNA simply is. And we dance to its music.” The DNA-PORTRAIT project is the evolution of Claud Hesse works on DNA, created by her right from the beginning, in which a team of geneticists is collaborating with her artistic research to create real genotype portraits. The actual DNA extracted from human beings and other living organisms is elevated to an artistic level in DNA-PORTRAIT. In this kind of “Copernican Revolution” of both the image and collective imagination, the usual concept of a portrait is turned upside-down. So far the portraits have focused on the more or less realistic representation of the phenotype as we appear, therefore, in our environment which is inevitably subject to change over time. As the environment alters, there are variations also in the phenotype. However, with the DNA-PORTRAIT, Claud Hesse intention is no longer to represent the phenotype but the genotype, which is the hidden code determining most of the physical and behavioral traits of an individual. Once extracted the DNA is processed and photographed by the team of geneticists in the lab (of course fully respecting individual privacy). It then passes into her hands, or rather, first of all into her mind… The scientific image is the starting point, therefore, of the creative process of intuitions, suggestions and resonances, which allows Claud Hesse to make a figurative transposition of the pure scientific data, and effectively create an image, an “immortal” portrait in sequences and personalized visual musical rhythms. The genetic sequence is then placed on the musical staff and each gene is “painted” by hand with the thread becoming both a metaphor for the “Fil Rouge” which unites all of creation and for “taut violin strings” that ring out when the gaze of the viewer rests on them. Just as an infinite number of symphonies can be created from the seven musical notes and an infinite number of shades from the five primary colors, infinite forms of life can be created by the four nitrogenous bases of DNA. The project then consists in creating, starting from the Pio Monti’s DNA PORTRAIT, realized as a ante-litteram prototype, a sequence of DNA PORTRAITS that would compose a fractal of universal symphony of humanity. Pio Monti - DNA PORTRAIT Silver and thread on canvas, 30x30 cm, 2014 Big Conscience “In principio fu il verbo...” “In the beginning was the word.” Quantum physics shows in sound the conditio sine qua non of life itself. Big Conscience conceptually overturns our net of neurons and brings it to the outside. In this way, it represents an individual conscience in its becoming that can be shared and recognised outside itself. This experience is brought about thanks to the use of a formal scale and the interaction between the participant and the work set off by sound. The installation, made up of elements in silicone, reacts to the vibrations of the words to put in communication our intimate, personal sphere with its external reflection. Inside and outside, the object and the subject of our awareness chase each other in a game of reflected relations and Big Conscience returns the sound effect to us in a different form. Central to these works is Rubik’s cube, symbol par excellence of Ars Combinatoria. In VACUUM its multi-colour fractals are shrouded in a single dark veil, in RANDOM they are encased in mirrors and charged with pure light in PLENUM. In this way the cubes are conceptually charged with a new significance which draws on the knowledge of avant garde physics whose research shows there is a ‘Copernican revolution of perception’ and where the ‘Vacuum’ is the fullest place-non place in the Universe, the beginning of Everything! In RANDOM the mirror becomes the impenetrable membrane that obscures our perception of the vacuum and brings us back to a perceptive game of mirrored relations while in PLENUM the levitation becomes mystical means that projects the work in a dimension of pure creative thinking. The form of the work ‘The God Particle’ derives from the musical 4/4 time signature, the symbol of unity and principle of all harmony. Suspended within this perfect 24 x 24 square is a sheet of copper, one of the principal materials used in conducting energy and employed by the artist as a printing plate on which to engrave her art. This particular printing plate however is untouched. It is in a state of potentiality ready to be engraved or charged electrically. We can see it through the semi-reflective glass sides but we can in no way reach or possess it. We can sense its existence but we cannot have it, just like the God particle so eagerly sought by scientists all over the world. The more we try to penetrate the material by force in order to possess it, the less we succeed. The glass that guards the ‘ Grail of Physics’ reflects our image since we see what we are, in the philosophical sense. It is not the glass that reflects us but rather it is we who reflect on what is around us, the whole of ‘our world’. But if for a moment we were to succeed in going beyond our ‘self’ and directing our gaze more deeply, we would notice that once again our image is reflected, engraved on the untouched printing plate. In a higher sense, this time, as awareness of what we are, as consciousness of ourselves and of our Being. The infinite Always dear to me was this solitary hill and this hedge, which, for its part, excludes most of the horizon. But sitting and gazing at such endless spaces that stretch with their profound and serene silences, my wandering thoughts nearly engulf me. As the wind rustles through the trees, I must keep on, balancing an infinite silence with this voice. I recall the eternal, the dead seasons, the present, the living, and the sound of it; InfinitiesInfinities and in traversing this immensity, my thoughts drown, and to me, to shipwreck in this sea, is sweet. In the depths of the unexplored space within ourselves there is something that links us to everyone and everything else and it is here, according to the new discoveries of quantum physics, that life energy resides. In the works of Claud Hesse there reigns the microscopic and the sub-atomic as a manifestation of the microcosm which has existed within ourselves and within everything since time immemorial. Claud Hesse unlocks and throws wide open a latent world to reveal a hidden Atlantis. This is a new world waiting to be discovered and understood, an overturning of the infinite universe within ourselves where, in the language of quantum physics, the God particle is found, the emptiness in the atom that generates energy, the energy from which life springs. An emptiness where space and time cancel each other out in the face of something greater…the essence of things. Claud Hesse was born in 1981 in Italy. Daughter of a surgeon, Claud Hesse was influenced by her parents’ profound passion for philosophy. From an early age they instilled in her an interest in scientific and classical culture but right from the beginning it was art that played a fundamental role in her life. Her schooling at the Liceo Classico, visits to important art exhibitions and many trips abroad (United States of America, China, Russia, Great Britain, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France, Spain, Greece, etc.) were fundamental to her formation as an artist, to her “forma mentis” and also to her perception of the world and life itself. After taking her school leaving certificate, she enrolled at university to study Biotechnology where she explored genetics and physical science. Following this she studied painting at the Fine Arts Academy where she graduated with top marks. She then did a Master and graduated with summa cum laude. Her graduation thesis was entitled “ONE art – music – quantum physics”. In writing this thesis she enjoyed the collaboration of the National Institute for Nuclear Physics in Frascati and composer-musician Giovanni Allevi. She currently lives and works between Italy and Berlin. Her fondness for scientific culture, particularly DNA and quantum physics, is latent in her as an artist so that we continually find references to them in her work melded with subtle philosophic concepts and deep inner reflections.
