EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
HANDBOOK
2011-2012
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF TURIN
WELCOME
Dear Parents & Students,
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the extensive Extra-Curricular Activities
Programme on offer next year, starting September 2011.
We have designed a programme to give students a wide range of opportunities where they can improve
current skills or try something new.
The programme will start during the week of 19th September 2011 and will end on 15th June 2012.
There will not be any after-school programme available on 21st December nor on days when classes finish
at noon. Please refer to the calendar on the next page for further details.
Most activities will run for 1 hour from 15:45 – 16:45.
Activities with different times will be clearly marked.
Transportation is provided to any activity that takes place off-campus and this is included in the cost.
However, parents are requested to collect their children from the venue at the finishing time.
We hope that many students will take part but in order to guarantee an activity will run there must be a
minimum of 10 participants.
We therefore request that you return the form at the end of this booklet with payment by 2nd September.
We will try to accommodate all choices however, if some activities are oversubscribed, they will be filled
on a first come, first served basis.
Expectations of students and parents:
• While extra-curricular activities are not compulsory we see it as a great opportunity for students to
grow and develop outside of the classroom and encourage all our students to get involved in some
way.
• Once students have committed to an activity they are expected to attend all sessions. No refunds
will be given if a student leaves during the programme or is absent at any time.
• All students must wear appropriate clothing for sporting activities.
• If students are not involved in an activity or after-school lesson they may not remain on campus
after 15:45 unless they are enrolled in the Afternoon Supervision.
Thank you for your support.

Aikido (also called the art of Samurai) is a Japanese martial-art founded and developed during the first 30
years of 1900 by Morihei Ueshiba Master.
He studied the most important martial-arts of that period and elaborated the better techniques he thought
were good to get a complete method to defend and fight; but his aim wasn’t only to get Aikido good for
fighting but even good to get what he called the “correct victory”; correct victory for him was facing a
dangerous situation with a 3-level-reaction:
- Trying to keep the peace
- Using fighting techniques without hurting the opponent in order to persuade him to not continue
with his attack
- Fighting and hurting the opponent only if really necessary
This is possible not only by studying reactions to prevent against all kinds of attack (hands, kicks, knife,
sword, stick) but also by improving spirituality, self-control, ability to read situations and emotional
reactions.
Aikido – Difesa Personale
Grades: Kindergarten – 5
Thursdays – 15.45 - 16.45
Grades: 6-12
Mondays 15.45 - 16.45

meets once a week and is an excellent platform for students to develop their sense of internationalism and
raise awareness of important world issues.
There is also the opportunity to attend two MUN conferences:

Zumba: Grades 8-12
The Zumba Fitness® Program is a Latin inspired dance-fitness program that blends international music with
contagious easy to follow and choreographed dance-fitness steps, from salsa to reggaeton, cumbia and
merengue, bachata and more.
It’s a program where the priority it’s not focused on pure physical aesthetics but a more overall complete
wellness where fun and solidarity coexist with toning and low-impact cardio workout, thanks to the energy
given from the latin-music and an overall sense of achievement and celebration.
In one class, participants could burn between 500 to 1,000 calories as well as learn coordination, increase
muscle toning and work every muscle in their bodies, including the most important one: their hearts.
Since its inception in 2001, the Zumba® program has grown to become the world's largest, and most
successful, dance-fitness program with more than 12 million people of all shapes, sizes and ages taking
weekly Zumba® classes in over 110,000 locations across more than 125 countries.
The goal of the Zumba Fitness® Program is to spread the philosophy of health and happiness and of loving
everything you do, especially your workout. For more information, please go to www.zumba.com
Ditch the Workout, Join the Party!
www.zumba.it.
