Dio ci da la gioia di scambiarci le
Due Parole durante questo tempo di
Quaresima, questi momenti si chiamano i "tempi forti" nella vita
liturgica della Chiesa, proprio
perche' noi possiamo aprire sempre
piu' il nostro cuore a Dio, e il cuore
a Dio si apre, mano mano che noi
riusciamo a comunicare di piu' tra
di noi e' proprio cOsi': siamo capacl
di pregare meglio, se ..
sappiamo stare
meglio con il prossimo e siamo piu'
fraterni e umani con
il prossimo se siamo
capaci di sentire Dio
sempre piu' come
Padre.
Veramente, in
queste Due Parole
non seguiro"un vero
e proprio discorso
organizzato, sono
pensieri che mi vengono dalle Messe
della Domenica e che io vi corn·
unico; comunicandovi questi pensiere, tenendovi presenti nelle mie
preghiere e nel mio cuore, sento
sempre piu' vivo il mio rapporto con
Dio che mi chiama alle conversioni,
cloe' a sentire profondamente presente nella mia vita, la vostra vita e
la vita di Dio.
Il Signore Dio vive nel mondo
anche con la mia vital vive nel
mondo anche con la vostra vita, e'
proprio tanto bello sentire che noi
portiamo la vila di Dio nelle nostre
vile ed ognuno in modo diverso
dall'altro, pcro' cerchiamo di avere
questa fede, di crederlo, ricordiamoci che Dio ci ha dato la sua vila
con Gesu', con la vita di Gesu' e
Gesu' ci ha dato questa vita con la
Sua Morte e Risurrezione quindi la
nostra vita cammina per questa via
di Passione, morte, Risurrezione,
insieme a Gesu'. Chi e' Gesu' "E'
colui che per essere stato messo alla
prova e avere sofferto personalmente, e' In grado di venire in aiuto

a quelli che subiscono la prova".
Gesu' e' stato tentato nel
deserto, e' stato tentato dal diavolo
e il diavolo c'e': e' uno spirito, uno
spirito del male e ci tenta personalmente ci fa vedere che nel mondo ci
sono tante cose meglio di Dio tante
cose che ci possono dare subito una
felicita', anche quel pensiero che
abbiamo sulla nostra vita quando
pensiamo che poteva essere meglio
e' una tentazione del
diavolo, ma Dio ci ha
dato anche l'Angelo
custode che e' con noi
e che intorno a noi
combatte contro il
diavolo: e' vero, sono
tutte parole che sem-·
brano una favola per
bambini, ma nella
prima domenica e'
chiaro il combatti·
mento fra il diavolo e
I'angelo. E questo
combattimento insieme all'Angelo ci
aiuta a seguire Gesu' che sale sui
monte e chiama i discepoli a pregare
con Lui, camminare con Gcsu' e'
una salita, e' salire sui montc; e' una
fatica, e' inutile dire che le cose
sono facUi, facili sarebb~ anche un
insulto per la nostra capacila' di
vivere e di creare la nostra vit3; ed il
nostro non e' un atteggiamento di
orgoglio, ma di umile fede e fiducia
perche' anche quando ci stanchiamo
e ci addormentiamo come gli Apos·
toli, rimane sempre Gesu' sveglio
che prega' per noi, perche' Gesu'
wole che tutti gli uomini siamo
salvi e arrivino alla coscienza della
verita'.
Il racconto dell'albero che non
da' frutto e' moHo bello,
quell'albero era quasi secco perche'
il contadino non gli aveva dato il
suo amore, ma quando il contadino
ha cominciato a zappare, concimare,
annaffiare, I'albero si e' ripreso e ha
portato il frutto; quello che trasfigura la nostra vita e'· I'amore di Dio,
proviamo a chiedere a Dio che ci
dia I'amore vero, generoso, concreto, specialmente quando ci sentiamo egoisti, orgogliosi, invidiosi,
gelosi, faremo I'esperienza della
trasfigurazione nella nostra anima e
guardando la bianca ostia consacrata, sentiamo nel cuore che
stiamo guardando Gesu', apprezziamo una grande gioia, la gioia di
vivere con il Padre perche' noi
siamo peisone di Chiesa, veniamo in
Chiesa, partecipiamo alla Chiesa,
ma siamo tanto annoiati di vivere in
Chiesa, non ce ne accorgiamo ma
·rispondiamoci chiaramente
nell'anima, perche' diventiamo criticoni stupidi e ignoranti quando
qualche nostro fratello, antipatico e
prc!mntuoso, wole fare qualche
cosa di bene. Il figlio prodigo e'
tornato alla casa del Padre dopo che
ha rovinato tutta la sua parte,
ritorna alla casa del Padre e del
fratello per questo il fratello maggiore si arrabbia, perche' viveva con
il Padre, ma non aveva la gioia di
vivere con il Padre.
Aiutiamoci in questo tempo di
Quaresima a creare la gioia di vivere
con il Padre, creiamo questa in noi e
intorno a noi, non scagliamo mai la
prima pietra e nemmeno la seconda
e nemmeno la terza, perche' Gesu'
e' venuto nel mondo non per giudi.
care il mondo, ma perche' il mondo
si salvi per mezzo suo".
Questa e' la vera pace di Gcsu'
che noi riceveremo con il ramoscello di ulivo nel giorno delle Palme
e' il simbolo del dono piu' grande
che il Signore ci abbia fatto e cioe'
la sua pace. La pace di Gcsu' e'
un'aUra cosa, a Lui gli e' costata la
vita, il ramoscello di uiivo ci porta il
sangue di Gesu' quel sangue che
lavera' il nostro egoismo e il nostro
orgoglio per darci un po' di amore e
questo amore sara' I'inizio della
Risurrezione nella nostra vita, nel
giorno di Pasqua. ·ederlo,ricordia·
moci che Dio ci ha dato la sua vita
con Gesu', con'la;

The First 15 Years
Just after I first suggested that I
might write a piece about BACK·
HILL's first fifteen years, I seriously
wondered if it was worth bothering
with. After all, our regular readers
would know all about the magazine's first decade and a half, and
those who don't have a BACKHILL
every month probably wouldn't care!
Of course, that's not true: whilst we
can boast of having a strong
and very loyal readership,
not all the people who read
BACKHILL now, were
there at the start. Even if
they were, most couldn't
remember what things were
like at the beginning. I can!
The very first issue was
pUblished in February 1977.
To say it was "published" is,
technically, correct though'
in truth the professionalism
implied by. the use of this
word, and indeed by the magazine's
present format, really did not exist..
The germ of an idea of an Anglo.
Italian community magazine was
underwritten with a great deal of
enthusiasm' and energy, but very
little technical know-how or practi.
cal journalistic experience.
Many people were involved at
the start: writers, typists, those who
could draw or take photographs
and...· a large number who walked
around a table! In the early days
BACKHILL was produced 'on a
Ronco duplicator which was kept
and operated at the Church social
club premises, and this machine was
a devil of a device which printed
each page from a "stencil" which
was typed on an ordinary typewriter.
The trouble with it was that it was
very difficult to correct errors satisfactorily; and if the piece was too
long, it was even more difficult to
edit it down to fit the available style.
Of course if the article was too short
it" was up to the artistically inclined
to fill in the resultant space with
some appropriate illustration., We
would print for days on end, and

eventually all of the pages would be
arranged in the correct order on a
large table and then on the allottted
day the small army of conscripted
labour would arrive for an evening
of unparalleled pleasure, tramping
round and round the table, collating
each individual copy of the amga·
zine, until one page ran out. Then
we were free!
matically, which in turn meant we
could approach potential advertisers
on a more commercial footing, and
this meant we could afford the
printers bills. However, over the last' '
few years, I think people have come
to believe. that we who produce 10
editions of the magazine each year
as regular as clockwork, to a standard which could be passed off as
professional, are ind~
professional journalists and
publishers. This is quite
untrue. Apart from the
professional printers,
everyone involved in producing "La Rivista della
Comunita' Italiana" is a
volunteer. Just think about
it.
It might also be worth
saying, at this point that
we are always on the look·
out for "new blood", as it
were: other people to become invol-,
ved in the family that is the BACK·
HILL production team. Younger
members of the community would
be particularly welcome, if only to
try to rekindle a little of that elusive
spark of excitement that I'm sure
existed in the early days.
It would be quite invidious to try
and mention every person who has
been involved in this enterprise,
even if it were desirable (which in
itself is highly questionable) but I
cannot end this pcce without heap·
ing some well·deserved praise on
the person who has ensured,
through thick and thin, that the
magazine comes out on time each
month, who has been an inspiration
to all the others involved (even if he
has invoked other emotions as well,
at times), and who has steered us
virtually single handed through controversy, complacency and indif·
ference. I am referring to our editor
Franeesco Giacon, without whom
the BACKHILL we know and love
would not exist.
So, here's to the next 15 years!

So why am I telling you all this?
For me, those evenings exemplified
what the magazine was all about:
the comradeship, the independence
and that good feeling which we
experience when we've done some-·
thing worth doing. It was hard work,
but it was also great fun. Of that
seemingly innumerable throng, just
a few survive to this day. We cannot
blame them. So many of us then
were students, or at very least we
had few responsibilities. As time
wore on, participators came and
went, but the core remained.
Our production techniques improved, most noticeably for the rea-'
dership in 1982 when the magazine
began to be printed by a proper
printing company, and then again
seven years later when we started to
produce the finished pages ready for
printing, by computer. Whilst the
introduction of professional printing
relieved so many of a tiring and
tiresome burden, I cannot help feeling, with all the benefit of hindsight,
that things changed enormously
from then on. Of course, the presen·'

San Vincenzo - questo
prete romano che ha
dedicato tutta la sua
vita al servizio dei
poveri, dei malati,
all'assistenza dei carcerati e dei condannati
a morte, all'educazione
dei giovani e deg!i emigrati - indicare ai laici
nuovi modi per collaborare con il clero per
la difesa della fede e la
diffusione del Regno di
Cristo. Ecco il significato della Congregazione <la lui creata, la
Societa' dell'Apostolato
cattolico, da cui emana
una lezione estremamente modema di vocazione del laicato. Ecco
anche il significato della creazione
di questa nostra Parrocchia di San
Pietro, la prima ch.iesa italiana, mai
costruita in un paese straniero,
voluta dalla sollecitudine di San
Vincenzo per il benessere spirituale
di coloro che avevano lasciato I'ltalia per venire a lavorare in Gran
Bretagna.
San Vincenzo nacqueil 21 aprile
del 1795, in piena rivoluzione francese. 11 suo ministero sacerdotale si
svolge quindi nel periodo successivo
a quest'epoca di rivolgimenti della
societa' europea, divisa tra il desiderio di ristabilire l'ordine sconv01l0
dalla rivoluzione e le ideenuove
espresse dalla gioventu' dell'epoca.
San Vincenzo senti' la responsabi!ita' di vivere nell'epoca in cui il
Signore aveva deciso di farlo nascere. Cosi' Papa Paolo VI ricordo' il
nostro Santo in un discorso nel 1%3
nella cattedrale di Frascati.

Questo e' il lato piu' geniale

che il laico stesso puo' diventare
elemento attivo. Ma questo impegn~
dei laici non consiste solo nell'aiutare f sacerdoti ad arrivare in tutti
g!i ambienti e ad alleviare la loro
fatica. E' un impegno molto piu'
profondo ed essenziale, che emerge
dall'intimo della coscienza cristiana
del laioo, che' nOli e' piu' "uno
strumento passivo e insensibile" ma
ha capito che "essere cristiano costituisce una fortuna" perche' e' chiamato ad associarsi a questo minis-,
tero di salvezza, e a "portare col
clero la Croce del Signore in mezzo
alla societa' ".
Un impcgno e una missione
questi che la Chiesa ha reso possibili per tutti,perfino ai bambini, ai
ragazzi, a tutti coloro che sono
impegnati nello studio e nellavoro,
a quem che non hanno capacita' di
cu1lura e di parola: "a tutti ha reso
possibile offrire un contributo positivo di azione e di testimonianza

cristiana"., Seguiamo percio' anche

the oldest families left. in Clerkenwell. The eldest son is in his eighties
and has been involved in Little Italy
with his family since the early 1900s.
Many of the others in the photo
grew up in "il quartiere italiano"
and formed part of the core of Little
Italy through inter marriage.

Dalla Scozia - Grant Bellini
Inverness, Scotland.
Abbiamo qui inScozia un giov;me' italiano di appena
sedici anni, Grant Belleni che si famolto onore nei campi
del tennis del nord .della Scozia. Grimt ha vinto alcuni
tomei (Grantown Boys Singles, Rothes Boys Singles) ed
anche alcuni tomei a coppie (a Grantown eo.Inverness).
Ecco una fotografia di Grant durante i1 torneo Under·IS
di Nairn.
Credo che· pure-Iui~si·merita due righe nellavostra
rivista. Sono sicuro che i lettori saranno orgogliosi di un
piccolo it3liano all'estero che si fa onore. Dopo aver letto
i1 mio BACKHILL viene passato a parecchie altre
famiglie, io specialmente la gOOo perche tengo tanti piu'
che cari amici nella comunita' italiana di Londra.

La Fes'ta Natalizia per I Nonni
Abbiamo avuto i1 party natalizio per i nostri anziani: si
e' svolto nelle sale del Club, la Sala Rossa e la
Conference Room. A1cuni di loro erano vecchietti, altri
invece anziani come me, Don Russo; e gli anziani cd io,
desideriamo diventare vecchietti e invidiamo e chiamiamo fortunati quelli che sono diventati vecchietti e
speriamo che rimangano vecchietti per tanti e tanti anni,
con I'aiuto di Dio e secondo la volonta' di Dio.
Questo party nillalizio per gli anziani e' cominciato'
tanti e tanti anni fa': I'idea comune dei Sacerdoti di
questa Chiesa e del Comitato del Club, I'ha sempre
mandata avanti con tanto affetto; perche' i nostri
anziani sono i giovani di tanti e tanti anni fa che con i1
loro lavoro e con le loro famiglie hanno continuato la
vita dignitosa e costruttiva che la Comunita' italiana ha
sempre osservato in questa nazione.
E I'affetto principale e' stato dato a questi anziani
da tutti i cari amici del Club che hanno preparato le
sale con eleganza, e che hanno cucinato in modo
veramente squisito e queste qualita' nascono
dall'esperienza, e' vero, ma non solo da una esperienza
che viene dalla testa, berisi' da una esperienza che
acquista la sua capacita' da' un cuore che vuole bene al
prossimo.
Una parola particolare dobbiamo dedicarla ai nostri
giovani a quelle decine di giovani che hanno fatto
avanti e dietro, ~su e giu' per portare i piatti del
mangiare belli caldi e.ordinati.
Questo tipo di feste, con tutta questa gente, vale
piu' di tante predichc.

ciazione Emilia Romagna, gia' dal 1983 coordina·

tema "Nuova legge regionale • Diritti degli emi·
gratin. Erano presenti l'asscssore regionale Rodolfo
Marchinie it consigliere regionale Giuseppe Cas·
tella. Sono intervenute rappresentanzc di giovani
oltre ai presidenti e comitati emiliano.romagnoli
della Gran Bretagna. Ha introdotto i lavori il
consultore e membro del CGIE Lorenzo Losi,
coadiuvato in presidenza dal coordinatore dei
circoli Roberto C3rdinali, da Sergio Pavarani,
Dante Lcccacorvi e dagli amici della Scozia,
Giovanni Costa e Fabrizio Necchi.
Dopo aver falto una breve storia della col·

denti dall'associazione Emilia Romagna, Losi ha
attirato l'attenzione dei presenti, in particolare,

, Guardando al futuro, il mcssaggio del Sinodo e' onestamentc trepidante. Dice Giovanni Paolo II nel
discorso conslusivo "I'unita' della
Chiesa, fondala sull'unita' dell'Epicum Pctro et sub Pelro, come ha
illuminato nell'Est la sofferenza per
le violenze e ~ le sopraffazioni, cosi'
puo' SOSlenere an.che i pastori e i
fedeli sottoposti ai turbamcnti della
societa' di oggi".
Del Sinodo puo' dirsi quello che
Giovanni Paolo II ha detto del
Mcssaggio per la imminente Giornata Mondiale della Pace 1992: "ne'
un bilancio, ne' un processo", ma
"un lluovo fraterno invito a riDet-,
tere sulle vicende umane del
momento per elevarle ad una
visione etico-religiosa".
E' un "evento": si tratta di
parlare di Dio. Di consegnare la Sua
Parola agli uomini del Millennio
che sta per cominciare. Proprio per
queslo e' tempo che "scoppl la
grande preghiera". Quella "grande
preghiera" auspicata dal Santo
Padre quandO, alla conclusione
dell'agape fraterna, ha salutato i
singoli partecipanti al Sinodo.
Che cosa sara' la nuova Europa,
e in quali orizzonti mondiali, nes·
suno puo' sapere. ~Basti ai cristiani
lavorarvi in coerenza 001 nome che

AIcune di queste cose sono
giuste, ma bisogna anche' pensare a
mettere un fondamento alia nostra
vita, Anche il tempo corre veloce e
chi si preoccupa solo di cose
materiali, alle prime difficolta' si
sente perso e resta solo e deluso.
AIle volte i fatti della vita non ci
danno un momento di respiro e noi
ci accorgiamo che non e' possibile
risolvere tutti i problemi solo con i
soldi 0 con le nostre sole forze, E'
qui che il Signore ci viene in aiuto
con il Suo Amore. Egli vuole che
noi siamo veramente felici, anche
quando la vita va male ed e' pesante
e noi non capiamo il perche'.
Coraggio a tutti, il Signore non
vuole imbrogliarci 0 ricattarci 0
lavarci il cervello. Egli non e' geloso
di noi ma vuole darci la Vera Vita e
un Amore Eterno. Ecco perche'
invita tutti noi a rinnovarci nella

Carpini
John of Plan carpini, the Papal
envoy to the Mongol conquerors who travelled to eastern Asia in 1245-47_
The opening of Asia to Europeans is associated in the minds of
most with the Polo' family. At least
equal credit is d~e to. the missionaries from the Orders of Friars.
Ye.! the name· of the first of them,
John of Plan Carpini, is not so
nearly as well kn,own as it should be.
The first European ever to penetrate Mongolia and Eastern' Asia
was no uncommon man.
John of Plan Carpini was a
contemporary and disciple of St.
Francis. Like the Poverello, he was
Tuscan, born at Pian di Carpina,
probably in 1180.
The year was 1245, and the
situation in Europe was critical. A
few years before, the Christian world
had been attacked by the most
ferocious enemy it had ever known,
the ·Mongols,. a .confederacy .of
nomadic peoples from the heart of
Asia who had been unified, armed
and set in motion by Genghiz Khan.
Central Asia succumbed first, then
China, Persia" Russia, Poland and
Croatia were invaded. Terror gripped Christendom; a devastating
attack on Germany and Italy seemed
more than likely. Europe was saved
by the merest accident, the death of
the great Khan Ogedei, Ghenghiz's
son and successor. The throne was
elective. All the Mongol leaders had
to be present, hence while the
election was pending, military operations were suspended.
Fortunately, Europe at this time
found an able leader in Pope Innocent IV. He determined to make
a direct approach to the Mongol
leaders, selected Friar John for this
perilous mission and placed in his
hand a letter. The tone'was critical,
e:ensorious and far from conciliatory.
Carpini left in April 1245 and
travelled via Germany, Poland and
Russia. In February 1246 he and his
companions came to Sarai on the
Volga. There the Carpini party was

but are entirely without baptism".
This is perhaps the earliest
account of China from the pen of a
European, written years before the
arrival of the Polos.

born some time after 1387 and
died in 1455.

illuminator than. he was
upright a churchman. This
man, although he could
have iived in the world
with the greatest comfort,
resolved for his own peace
and satisfaction, to take
the vows of the Order of
Preaching Friars; for the
reason that, although it is
possible to serve God in
all walks of life, it appears
to some men that they can
gain salvation in monas·
teries better than in the
world.
Fra Giovanni was
greatly beloved for his
merits by Cosimo de' Medici, that,
after completing the construction of
the Church and Convent of S.
Marco he caused him to paint the
whole Passion of Jesus Christ on a
wall in the !=hapter·housc. In the
dormitory he painted a story from
the New Testament, of a beauty
beyond the power of words to
describe.
In S. Domenico da Fiesole he
painted the panel of the high altar,
which has been retouched by other
masters. In a chapel of the same
church is a panel by his hand,
containing the Annunciation of Our
Lady by the Angel Gabriel with
features in profile, so devout, so
delicate, and so well executed, that
they appear truely to have been
made rather in Paradise than by the
hand of man; and in the landscape
at the back are Adam and Eve,
because of whom the Redeemer was

Karajan's Aldo Protti with half

far a more evil, subtle Iago.
Solti, conducting the Chicago
Symphony Orchestra, is a disappointment too. His .speeds are
rushed at timeS· and at other times
he pulls around the tempo in a very
odd way. There is no doubting
Solti's love of the opera. But it
seems to me as if he has not really
thought the work out ihis time
round.
The sound of this performance'is
not one of Decca's best. The voices
are very close up and bright while
the orchestra ,sound lacks .warmth
and body.
For those of you who want a
truly moving and stunning sounding
Othello do turn to the Karajan set
also on Decca (411 618-2) with Del
Monaco, Tebaldi and Protti. But I
do also urge you to try and listen to
Pavarotti in his most challenging
role to date. He will not disappoint
you.

tapes I have of his many cricket
commentaries. I hope his like will
come again. I hope his values and
"aspirations for sport will prevail
long into the 21st century.
Not many people know that for a
long time John Arlott was a football
reporter during the winter but he
became so distressed at the way in
which he saw football going that he
gave up this aspcct of his career. I
would rather not talk about football
this month but suppose I will have
to.
A couple of weeks. ago I went to
my Godson Anthony's house to wish
him a happy birthday and this was a

decided mistake. I was offered a cup
of tea by his mother in a Tottenham
Hotspur mug, a slice of birthday
cake bearing the name "Spurs" and
was then asked by Anthony himself
"what is the difference between
Arsenal and a tea bag?" I declined
to answer. I thought it was probably
time to try and change the direction
of the conversation. I fell into
discussion with his father on the
subject of bond schemes for football
grounds.
Indeed, it WlI!o an interesting
debate and worthy I felt of some
comment in these columns.
My friend asserted the view that
these bond schemes, such as the
ones at Arsenal and West Ham,
would ultimately drive the ordinary
man away from football. The game
was pricing itself out of the pockets
of the man in the street.
I could see his view and in a
sense sympathisCd with it but on the
other hand, what is the alternative?
Look at how many clubs have fallen
into debt and hard times when they
have chosen to build new stands
after they have had a proper oppor-.
tunity to prepare a careful, detailed
financial plan. What then is the
prospect for clubs who are being
forced to go all seater by the Taylor
report following the Hillsborough
disaster and the requirements of the
new Premier League?
The money coming through the
turnstiles may simply be insufficient
to finance the interest on any com-.
mercially funded loan and so an
appeal to their loyal fans made good
commercial sense and maybe the
only way in which clubs can meet
the demands being made upon them
to survive into the 21st century.
Clearly, therefore, there is some
force in the arguments on both
sides. It is difficult to sce a solution
at the stage which has now been
reached. I can understand the depth
of feeling of the West Ham suppor-.
ters who recently occupied the pitCh
and besieged the directors box in
protest at their own scheme. But if
they want their club in the Premier
League- what other course of
action is there open to the Upton
Park Directors?

ball has once again moved from a
position of stagnation to revolution
without any smooth transition
through any sensible intermediary
stage.
Facilities were largely built in the
early part of the century and have
been out dated and inadequate for a
very long time. An attempt was
made through safety at Ground
legislation to try and ensure mini'mum safety requirements but van·
dalism meant that clubs had to pen
their spectators in and then of
course came the Hillsborough dis·
aster and this has promoted the
decision that clubs should go all
seater.
Now that a little time has
elapsed since the great tra·
gedy in Sheffield, I think it is
legitimate to question
whether removal of the ter·
racing is necessary to ensure
safety at our grounds. Many
spectators prefer to stand
than sit. Having a .seat does
not necessarily protect you
from vandalism as Coventry,
Leeds and Luton can all tes·
tify when seats were ripped
out and thrown onto their
respective pitches.
I do believe the money
must be made available to
improve faeilities but this
does not necessarily mean
creation of lavish all seater
stands in every case although I
happen to believe it appropriate in certain instances and sup.
port the Arsenal scheme. Let us
have a clear constructive policy with
football funding these improvements
from within so that there is proper
and sensible use of resources. This
means that there has to be a strong
governing body for football. I have
long advanced the case for a Pre.
mier League. I am horrified, howe·
vcr, that the creation of this league
widens Ihe rift between the Football
Association and Football League
and that the creation of the League
does not automatically mean a
reduction in the number of games
top clubs will have to play each year.
When will people learn that the
future development of football in
this country depends upon success
at national level. The reason we
have never achieved the sort of
success that we ought is largely
because our players are physically
tired and mentally exhausted by the
time the major competitions are
played. It is ludicrous to have 22
clubs in the first divisi?n. and if
there is to be a premier'lcagu.e it
should be redUced to a maximum of
18, preferably 16 witl1 relegation of
the bottom two clubs each year to
.be replaced by two from"the next
division.
Personally, I believe it is only a
matter of time before we also have a
European super league and then
clubs really will have to grapple with
such controversial issues as ground
sharing and modern facilities if we
are to survive.
Football must never lose touch
with the man in the street but
equally football must stop being
financially naive and adopt such
schemes as are most commercially
appropriate to ensure not only the
survival of its clubs but also its
development in a way to ensure
parity is not lost with its european
counterparts.
Oh by the way- the answer to
Ihe question referred to above is
that a tea bag stays in the cup
longer!!

Fritelle di Ricotta per Carnevale
Ingredients:
2uova
70 gr zucchero semolato
60 grburro
200 gr ricotta
3 eucchiai di Rum
400 gr farina
1 bustina di lievito Bertolini

Ingredients :
2 eggs
2.5 oz caster sugar
2 oz butter
7 oz ricolla cheese
3 tbspns of Rum
14 oz plain flour
1 sachet of lievito Pan degl'Angeli

Metodo
Sbattete insiemele uova e 10 iucchero. Aggiungete
iI burro a pezzetti e mescolate poi la ricotta ed i1 rum.
Alia fine aggiungete la farina, iI lievito ed un pizzico di
sale. Lavorate finehe' avete un composto morbido.
Laseiatelo riposare per 15 minuti.
Fate dei piccoli cilindri del diametro di 2 cm circa.
Tagliateli in pezzi di circa 4 cm. Fateli friggere in
abbondante olio caldo pochi alia volta per circa 4
minuti. Scolateli e passateli in zucchero semolato.
Servite.
Method
Beat together the eggs and sugar. Add the butter in
smaU pieces and beat. Add the ricolla and rum, and
finally the flour, the lievito and a pinch of salt. Mix
together and knead until you obtain a soft dough.
Allow to rest for 15 minutes.
Roll the dough into long thin sausages about .3/4" in
diameter. Cut into pieces of about 1 112:' long. Fry a
few at a time in plenty of hot oil for about 4 minutes.
Drain then coat them in caster sugar. Serve.

Veal Parcels
Ripieno:
80 gr pecorino grattugiato
200 gr olive verdi snocciate
112 spicchio d'aglio (facoltativo)
3 cucchiai d'olio d'oliva
.3 cucchiai di pangrattato
pepe
Tritate le olive assieme aU'aglio. ,Unite iI pecorino,
iI pane e I'olio.
Filling:
30z grated pecorino cheese
70z green olives (stoned)
112 clove of garlic (optional)
3 tbspns olive oil
3 tbspns breadcrumbs
pepper
Chop the olives and garlic. Add the pecorino,
breadcrumbs and oil.
Faggotini:
4 grande 0 8 piccole fettine di viteUo
250 passato di pomodoro (pomi)
112 dado
2 eucchiai d'olio
un pizzico d'oregano
Parcels:
4 large or 8 small veal escalopes
9 oz sieved tomates (Pomi)
112 stock cube
2 tbspns of oil
pinch of oregano
Tagliate le fette grandi in due. Mettete su ogni fella
un po' del ripieno. Avolgetela su se stessa. Scaldate
I'olio, unite iI passato di pomodoro, 3 cucchiai d'acqua,
iI mezzo dado sbricciolato. e I'oregano. Fate cuoccre
per 10 minuti. In una pirofila, versatevi iI sugo di
pomodoro, ponetivi in faggotini. Coprite con carta
argentata. Passateli nel fomo pre.scaldato di 18OC/no.4,
per mezz'ora. Se iI sugo risulta lr0PPO liquido, mettete
la priofola sui fomo, stemperate un cucchiaio di farina
con due cucchiai di vino e aggiungete al sugo,
mescolando finche' il sugo si adensa.
Cut the large slices of veal in two. Place some of the
filling on each. Fold the slices, forming a parcel. Heat
the oil, add the tomatoes, 3 tablespoons of water, the
112 cube crumbled and the oregano. Cook for 100
minutes.
Pour this in an ovenproof dish. Place the parcels
side by side into a dish. Cover with silver foil. Place in
pre.heated oven. no.4/18OC for half an hour.
Should the sauce be too liqui!:lY, mix 1 tablespoon of
flour with two spoons of wine or water and add to the
sauce mixing until the sauce thickens.
