RIVJSl'A DELLA COMUNITA'ITAUANA The Hill Conclusion of Famiglia Terroni Episode 3: Raffaele's Family The mid 1930's saw many changes in '11 Quartiere Clerkenwell'. The depression years were over, the population of '11 Quartiere'was finding it easier to get jobs, albeit for the most part in the catering trade, and .the asphalt, terazzo work was in great demand; the statuette makerS had set up several factories in the arca and the ice cream trade was booming. The English were regarding the Italians with less apprehension than in early years. In short the Italians were integrating and settling down. Then in 1935 Mussolini's invasion of Abbysinia set things back for the Paesani. There were a few racial flare ups (1 distinctly remember the cinema audiences booing when the Ncws reels were showing the Italian tanks rolling into Abyssinia). The Terroni business went through a bad time due to the sanctions imposed on Italian imports, which meant that about 99% of their commodities were unobtainable. The business was saved however by substituting Italian goods for produce from Spain and Argentina. On the whole the quality of life was on the up, major changes were taking place in '11 Quaniere', slum clearances by the Government meant that families, some of whom were living in undesirable conditions-overcrowding etc. were being moved into the new blocks of council flats in the surrounding areas. Famiglia Terroni however, was happy to remain in No's 32/34 Warner Street. Duilio, Raffaele and Roberto were still running the business. Now dear readers we will have to stay with the story of Raffaele and Paola Maria's family, otherwise the Terroni family saga will take on the proportions of War and Peace. Paola Maria with her two young daughters, Caterina and Luisa, made regular trips back to Saviano to visit her relatives. On one of these visits Caterina (Rina) met a young Neopolitan boy, Antonio Ciccone they corresponded for a while and in the year 1937, Antonio came to London and the young couple married in St Peter's Italian church, Clerkenwell. There was cause for a double celebration as 8 ------ Olive Besagni the date coincided with Paola Maria and Raffaele's Silver Wedding (25 years). As you. can imagine this gave cause for a 'festa speciale'. The young groom had a good career ahead of him back in Saviano: he started out as 'un Awocato', progressing to the post of 'Commissario di Pubblica Sicurezza'. The couple had two. children, Angela and "Gabriele. Gabriele followed in his father's footsteps taking up the same career, eventually graduating to the post of 'Commissario in Roma' and finally 'Chief of the Flying Squad' in Rome. Angela is a 'Professoressa di Italiano e .Filosofia'. So you see reader, there is a little bit of Famiglia Terroni from way back doing their bit in the home country. Caterina still lives in Saviano, she's reached the grand old age of 82, she is a widow now and when she fcels like a chat she rings Lou up and she still loves nothing better than to reminisce about the old days down 'The Hill'. Back to '11 Quartiere', 1938, the Munich crisis saw the children "of St Peter's sehool preparing for the evacuation, but Neville Chamberlain's white paper saved the day, everyone, particularly the Mammas, heaved a sigh of relief, only to go through the whole thing again in September 1939 but this time it was for real. The Hill was quieter, the absence of the children with some of the Mammas' was upsetting, the school was closed and airraid shelters were being built. Then, as nothing seemed to be happening (the period known as the 'Phoney War' gave people a false sense of security). The women and children began to return, homesickness for '11 Quartiere', plus the fact that some of the residents of Wootton Bassett, the small country town in Wiltshire where the children had been allocated didn't take too kindly to little foreigners living in their homes. A temporary school was set up in St Peter's and for a short spell things seemed OK. Realisation hit home when a few of the lads from 'The Hill' who had been fighting with the British Forces in Frarice, reiurned home with the stories of the hell that had .reigned with the evacuation of the troops from Dunkirk. Italy's entry into the war on the side of the Germans came as a shock to the Italian Community. At 8am on day 2 Raphaele and Duilio were picked up from the house in Warner Street. Lou was fortunate inasmuch as he'd already left for work; had he been at the house there is no doubt that he also would have been taken. Paola Maria hurried back from Weston Super Mare where she had been staying with friends. Panic set in when the news of The Arandora Star broke. Thankfully Famiglia Terroni were among the lucky ones. RalTaele was safe, he had been sent to the Isle of Man. Paola did not see Raffaele for a year until restrictions were lifted t < Lou and Bruna on their weddng day September 94 and families were allowed to visit their men folk at the internment camp. Fortunately Lou was able to join his uncle Roberto in running the shop, but once the stock that they were carrying ran out, the business rcally suffered. Obviously there were no longer imports from Italy or any other European country for that matter. However they managed to keep going by onc means or another. In 194 I another devastating blow. The family had just left the house when it suffered a direct hit, the bomb demolished No 34 leaving No 32 standing just long enough for the family assisted by Mr White, a friend who owned a linoleum shop in Exmouth Market, to recover most of the family furniture. The retrieval of the furniture was overseen by Paola Maria who took charge and being the strong minded little body that she was insisted on them climbing up to the upper floors and saving some of her home against what seemed to be impossible odds. You can imagine the family's feelings when realisation dawned that the family home, home to the Terroni family for 27 years, was no more A sad day indeed, the one consolation was that the family remained intact. Paola Maria \vith Lou, Pip and Luisa moved into a small house in Wren St, near Grays Inn Road, not too far away from the old home. In 1942 Lou married his childhood sweetheart Bruna Zanelli. After the wedding which was a small family affair, tile reception was held in the Zanelli home in Paekenham Street. The onc blot on their day was the fact that Raffaele was unable to be there. For their honeymoon they went to Richmond, because Lou, who if you recall had been born in Italy, was not allowed to go beyond a certain radius of his home as he was registered as an alien, which meant that he had to sign on at the Police Station in Grays Inn Road at regular intervals. The newlyweds seWed down in Wren Street \vith Paola Maria, and it was here that their two daughters Paola and Stephanie were born. The next family member to join the matrimonial stakes was Luisa who married Peter Di Giuseppc. Peter was a member of Famiglia Di Giuseppe, well known throughout '11 Quartierc', as they were probably responsible for cutting the hair of our Pacs.1ni for many years. Peter's business was in Lcather Lane until he retired ten yems ago. The couple had onc son, Peter. Unlike his predecessors young Peter Seuembre 94 did not go into the hairdressing was 8 months old, Paola Maria was in profession. He studied accountancy Saviano visiting her daughter Rina, and is now a partner in the well Raffaele was preparing to join her known company of Chartered Ac- when he was taken ill and after a very short illness he died. The family were countants, Ernst & Young. As I mentioned in last month's devastated, he was only 65. Life went on, as it does. "11 article Pip married Peter's sister Carolina Di Giusscpe in 1944, their eldest Quartiere" was never the same again. son Raphel is a concert pianist, 10hn There was still a smattering of the old has a career in Phillips Petrolcum, for residents left living in the little group whom he travels world wide and their of pref'lbS that haod been built as sister Maria specialises in chi I d re n' s hearing. Raffaele returned home from the internment camp in 1944 but was not allowed to join the family in the business, he had to do compulsory work towards the war effort. During this period Lou carried on assisting RobPaola (left) meeting the Pope with her Mother Superior erto in the shop. 1946 the war was over. Anna, the baby, was still in primary school. Lou and Bruna were still living among friends from the old days, a large number of our Paesani had settled in Highbmy, so, in some ways it was home from home. One evening in the year 1963 when Paola was eighteen, Bruna and Lou had been out for the evening, they returned home quite late to find that Paola had waited up for them. "I have to talk to you," she said 'What's wrong?' said Lou, then like a bolt from the blue, 'I want to be a Nun'. Her parents couldn't believe their ears, perhaps it was a joke? That's it, she was jokingI Their Paola had always been so lively, even a trifle rebellious at times. Religious, yes, but so wcre the rest of the family. You ladies of the CWA and we ex Figlie di Maria and friends can vouchsafe this. Reminiscing has always been a must for thosc of us late of "The Hill". Luisa was no exception. She and I were born just a few doors apart at 49 and 57 Mount Pleasant, and with our respective families shared the same dear friends and neighbours, the same activities. Here, together with our friends and compatriots in the streets around us, we all felt safe. we all felt protected. we were all happy together in our compact little world. with our ehureh around the corner and hospital up the road. Inevitably. with the course of time this haven is no more. but there is no car park. no unsightly carbunekle of concrete and chrome that can either eradicate or obliterate the old. familiar area of all that used to be. In fact for Luisa and thosc of us born from 57 Mount Pleasant up to the "Apple Tree" on the corner. there remains a precious bonus to cling to our houses arc still standing. seemingly as a monument to the unforgettable past. You cannot imagine the warm glow this stirs in one. During these last weeks, although by now exceedingly frail, Luisa's voice never faltered, right to her very last breath. We spoke of so many things, but utmost in her mind were her love for her neice Marie and an abhorrence of ending her days in a strange and unknown residential home. As things stood she wanted God to take her and take her He did. She repeated time and again to those of us close to her, and these were also her penultimate words to me, how she would willingly have aceepted any quality of life, providing it was in our Hospital, a sentiment presently ech· :\:r~:~ ~m~hoed Leading the Fig/ie di Moria in a pre·war Procession. t{f~~;::'J';~~~~:t-~~f~;::~?~;~~~~~ by many of us Both Requiem and Funeral masscs,";c'·'ct"i: .., y 've.rehballended by mdan , many lidriends; L -.. ne.g ours past an present an memo bers from all the ehurch associations. past), rector of St. John's Dunean We, "her girls", were present in fun Terrace and a good friend of Luisa's force. Protection in the event of death or serious disability of either partner is an important consideration, as this should be a high priority in order to protect their income and standard of living. Pension planning and savings for long-term expenditure are also areas that should be considered. basis to take into account any changes in a person's circumstances and the benefits of regular reviews eannot be overstated. Financial planning acknowledges that we all have different needs - not only when compared to others at any given point in time, but also at different stages in our IivC5. For the purposes of analysis, it is possible to identify seven such stages in a person's life, each with specific financial needs which arc likely to be typic.11 of each stage. The remainder of this article will give a brief account of cach of these seven stages:- Stage 4: Young/Married with children The prime concern in this case is financial protection in the event of premature death, iII-hcalth or disability. These possibilities will reduce a family's income at a time when expenditure is rising and, possibly, a mother stops working to raise a family. Young parents may also wish to put money aside to save for the future costs of their children's education or to provide a gift on a child's birthday. Stage 5: Married with Older Children The family is likely to have a higher Stage 1: Childhood/Minority Little planning can be achieved by level of income due to career progresthe child itself, but there is much seope sion or because both spouses are for parents or grandparents. Pension planning be- Setlembre 94 comes an important cosideration - as older people tend to appreciate the need to provide security in retirement. The opportunity to save and invest returns due to the higher level of earnings. The impact of tax on earnings and savings becomes an important consideration. People with older children will tend to be concerned with the financial status and healtIi of their own parents, and aie likely to consider estate planning and healthcare needs to be important in this respect. .. Stage 6: Post FamilylPre Retirement By this stage we can expect both spouses to be in a relatively secure financial position. The children will have left' home to be fully independent, and may possibly have their own families. It is usual for savings to have been accumulated from surplus income and for such savings to be invested in a wide range of investment vehicles. The main issues of concern are likely to be: pension planning to ensure security in retirement, estate planning and protection against the cost ofillness. Stage 7: Retirement The main concern will be to maintain an adequate level of income. Although expenditure may have fallen, resources will be needed to cope with the unexpected problems that arise in retirement. The investment and/or reinvestment of capital to produce additional income in a tax efficient manner will be an ongoing need for many people. Estate planning and the cost of possible nursing care will also be importantconsiderations. To summarise, the aim of financial planning is to assess the main needs that are likely to be typical of each of the above seven stages. This is achieved via periodic reviews thus ensuring that a person's financial action plan is adapted accordingly. We live in times which continually create new problems because most of us never seem to have quite enough money to do all the things we would like to do. Everyone starts life totally dependent on others as a child, followed by the opportunity to earn money, before entering their final dependency period in retirement. This article has attempted to highlight some of the financial needs that are likely to arise during a person's lifetime and to demonstrate how financial planning can be used to resolve such needs. 31 OUR NAME GUARANTEES A GREAT DEAL MORE! The emphasis this time around is more on a specific issue in psychology. When I went to university, in New York I majored in this particular discipline. I have always found it a 'fascinating . subject and try even now to keep myself updated on new discoveries or findings. In this article, I would like to discuss just what is Kleptomania. First and foremost. kleptomania is a disorder 'tIlat most people call the "stealing or hoarding" disorder. It basieally manifests itself in two different ways. The first way is the more common form. The individual begins to "pick up" various things that he or she finds and keeps the object(s). Sometimes a kleptomaniac may prefer to steal very small objects. Also, the person may attach a value to an object that is unrealistic and then proceed to steal. The object may actually be quite worthless. The individual, if the disorder progresses, may begin to carry out the action subeonsciously and only after the discovery of the object, begin to realize what he or she has done. Usually a hcalthy and positive response by the person is a sense of guilt. It means that the person wants to change and is opening himself! herself to that possibility. Yet if the person does not seek professional counselling the sense of guilt can actually start a vicious circle which may help to reinforee the undesired behaviour. If this begins to occur, the person can actually begin to experience "panic attacks" due to an intense sense of helplessness or angcr. In some way, I could argue that the panie attacks are truly a helpful thingl Why? Well, they can force the person to actually confront the problem instc.'1d of trying to run away from it. I think that it is the brain's alarm system sounding off. We all like to run away from problems. It is much c.'1sier to forget about t11em instead of f.'1cing them. Also, I ascribe to the thcory that klcptomania is not due to a chemical imbalance in the brain but rathcr a response to some very specific issue that that person has had to dc.'11 with c.'1rlicr in life. It could possibly be one specific cvcnt or a whole serics of events that finally led to a crisis situation. If' "ve look at why the person begins to acquire this behaviour, we have to first look at the expressions Ihat the, Jicrson is communicating to u~ by their aclions. By stc.'1ling, the 34 Michele Scotto SAC simply reflects back that which we give him or her. The therapist does not hold the control, rather the patient does. The patient's progress is truly and totally up to the patient; the therapist has no n1agic tliat the patient does not have himself. The second aspect to k1eptonlania is the hoarding aspect which is, not as common as the stealing aspect. Sometimes the two n1ay occur together. An example of this would be the idea of the "pack rat" who simply takes things just to store them. The idea is to acquire objects for the' Sake of acquiring and not for any true value. Earlier I stated th3t the individual n1ay steal without any conscious knowledge only to discover later what they have done it.' Somctimes this brings on a feeling of guilt or shame. As far as the Church is concerned, she teaches that three things are necessary for a truly mortal sin to have occurred. The first is that there has to be grave matter present. The second, there has to be full and deliberate consent of the will. Thirdly, there has to be sufficient reflection tliat to commil such an action will break my fricndship with ,God and take me out of a state of grace. In looking at the case of someone who is dealing with the problem of kleptomania. at least two of the conditions for serious sin have not been met!! This disorder dOes not allow one to have full and deliberate consent of will and withouf this how can one make sufficient reflection on what another person because we have often one is about to do? Therefore one is become so closed up inside ourselves. incapable of committing the sin of This is a barrier that has to be theft under such condilions. This, overcome wilh lots of will power, however, does not mean that the patience, and strength. In addition, action is justified. It means that once counselling is a very long process; the person becomes aware of the nothing can be solved in the short siluation t11ey should takc steps to try term. In counsclling we are made to to control it. In this case that would look at ourselves and re-evaluate what be counselling. Lastly, we also have to look at the IIaS happened in the past and try to ,put it into a new perspective in our total person. On the whole the person lives. Often too, we have become is quite normal in behaviour and accustomed or even comfortable, with attitudes and also dealing with other ccrtain negative aspects of our emo- people. For people who have this tionality. One c.'1n almost look at them difficulty the tendency is to try to in the &'1me light as bad habits that kcep it a dcep dark secret. Sometimes have to be broken. Remcmber tIlat in the individual will actually go to great counsclling the answers come from lengths to conceal the problem. Also I feel that any feelings of thc patient and not from the therapist. The power to change and the will guilt or shame should be direeted to better oursclves 'is something that more towards trying to conquer the c.'1ch individual must delermine for problcm instc.'1d of feeling sorry about himself or herself when they enter it. The road to recovery is not an easy into the counselling process. The onc - but it is certainly the only way therapist can sometimes be considered to get back on the right track. as nothing more than a mirror that person is first of all exhibiting a desire for something. This is obvious enough. We also have to look at what the person is stealing and the quality of the object tliat has n1ade it so desirous. In some way there should be some form of a recurring theme expressed in all of the objects taken. If k1eptonlania continues for a long period of time, there is the danger tliat the person has now acquired a very ingrained habit which also has to be broken. Sometimes if it occurs for long periods of time, the individual may begin to steal indiscriminately. In this case, finding a recurring theme n1ay become slightly more difficult. In any case, when a person comes to the realization that they are experiencing this particular difficulty, they should immediately seek professional help. This is something which can be cured. As with othcr disorders of this kind, il is not possible to handle it alone. If someone thinks that, I would tell them that they were dead wrong and perhaps they should seriously re-examine the whole situation. Sometimes it very difficult to open up to September 94 :tJ;~lLA COMUNlTA'ITAI1ANA Cinema Keanu Reeves. Another month, another hot property. Much Ado About Nothing, Little Buddha and surprising U.S. summer box office hit Speed etc. This very busy young actor has just had a 500% pay riSe offered to him by Savoy Pictures to star in Without Remorse. Reeves is reportedly still debating whether to take tbe S7m for a film version of the bestselling novel by Patriot Games author Tom Clancy. In the meantime he is committed to playing a disillusioned World War 11 vet in A Walk in the Clouds and then moves on to Feeling Minnesota, a drama about two brothers whose loathing for onc another increases when onc runs away with tbe other's wife-to-be. And just when he's ready to relax after all that there is Speed 2 already in the pipeline. Of course it is debatable just who is hotter, Reeves or Grant. Four Weddings and a Funeral recently became the second highest grossing film in the U.K. (S36.5m) after Jurassie Park (third is now Ghost). This S4.6m film has currently grossed Sl42m worldwide to date. I can think it is for no other reason that HUgh Grant has recently signed a two-year first-look deal with Castle Rock Entertainment. It gives Grant a right to develop, produce and star in wll.1tever he likes. Before then he is pencilled in for Fox's remake of French comedy Nine lIlonths, in which a brat-hating child psychologist is forced to reexamine his family values after finding out he is about to become a dad. To be seen also in Sirens Grant has becn busy with two films: the recently finished Restoration with Meg Ryan Sam Neill and David Thewlis (amongst others) which must have put at least onc marketing man in seventh heaven. He is also currently completing what must be a contender for the longest film title: An Englishman who went up a Hill but came down a /I{ountain. This film is also indic..llive of another current fad. If you are going on film location in the U.K. then apparently it is a choice between Wales or Scotland. For Wales wc have: August. Sir Anthony Hopkins stars and directs in this adaptation of Uncle Vanya. The Feast of July. A Merchant Ivory production hoping, no doubt, to keep the crest of the Howard's End! Michael Caton·Jones directs Liam Necson, Jessica Lange and John Hurt. Though b.1rely out of the editing room Mary Shelley's Frankenstein has still made a monster of a success of its star and director, Kenneth Branagh (as if he needed it!). Fox claim they have landed him to direct Arthur Miller's The Crucible whilst Warner Bros. insist he is at the helm on an adaptation of Thomas Hatdy's novel Return ofthe Native. Being able to be in two places at one time will not be so surprising when you hear that Gcorge Lucas has asked Branagh to play a young Alcc Guinness or Obi-Wan Kenobi. As you know the Star Wars trilogy was the second three-part story. Lucas is all sct to go on the first three-Jlart episode which lead to Darth Vadac's fall to the Dark side of The Foree. One that Brilnagh will definitely not be refusing is his Wife, Emma Thompson's adaptation of Austen's Sense and Sensibility in which she also stars. Presumably that is once she has finished Carrington \vith Jonathan Pryee. It seems the Branaghs are at the forefront of adaptation of classies. Franco ZCffirelli has completed Emily Bronte's Jane E}'re with Jeremy Irons as Mr Rochester. And the BBC is gelling in on the act \vith £4m t.v. version of Charles Dickens' Martin ChuulewU starring Paul Scofield, Sir John Mills and Joan Sims. It then follows this up with a six·part adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth and Alison Steadman. RIVISl'A DELLA COMUNITA'ITAUANA Sportlight There has been a lot to comment upon since our last issue. I must accept full responsibility for having selected Italy to win the World Cup. My wife holds me to blame that ultimately they went the way of so many of my other selections. But should the most prestigious and important tournament of the World's premier sport, held only once every four' years, be determined by the lottery of a penalty shoot out? Will Baresi (in my opinion, the man of the match in the Final) and Baggio (without whom Italy may not have reached that stage) ever put behind them their agonising penalty misses? I hope so, because whilst the outcomc of football matches turns on the mistakes or brilliance of individuals there remains an overall collective responsibility for the result. A missed open goal during the course of the 90 minutes or the defensive blunder is just as influential and what if a spot kick is ordered during the course of a game? Football is all about individuals accepting and shouldering responsibility. I do not accept, therefore, that the penaliy shoot out is "a lottery". In many ways it is the supreme test of skill requiring the ability to convert a golden opportunity into a goal under the most intense pressure. Hence the choice of the right people to take the kicks is as critical a part of the manager's function as the original selection of the team itself. But is there a better way? The logistics of organising a competition for teams from all over the world effectivcly eliminates a replay. I must confess that after 90 minutes, I would be attracted by the idea of sudden death up to a maximum of a further 30 minutes but after that, I really c.,nnot sec any alternative. The rc.,1 tragedy is that the first time ihis competition has to be decided on penalties, it should be Italy who were the losers. A week later, in order to try and help my son and godson get over their disappointment, I took them both to the Saturday of the Lords Test along with the father of an old friend. Our sc.,ts were in the new Mound Stand close to the scoreboard and it was only because we all thought we might be fc.,tured on television that I stayed up and also set the vidco recorder for the BBG highlights later that evening. 36 Richard Evans This was the first time that I learned about the controverSy whieh waS to surround. the England Captain, Mike Atherton over allegations of balltampering. ' The whole affair was rather strange and in my opinion poorly handled by the authorities. The only person who has really come ou.t of the incident with any kudos is Ray IIIingworth. Let us briefly run through the facts. BBC television show close up pictures of Mike Atherton putting his right hand into his trouser pocket, taking it out and then rubbing two fingers along the side of the ball. The match referce, ex-Australian Test Match Batsman, Peter Burge, ealled the Lancashire player to sec him and investigated the matter. Precisely what was said is still not entirely clear. Nevertheless, that evening an official announcement was made that After his head on and offthe pilch Atherton had given an explanation for his unfamiliar treatment of the ball which had been accepted and no further action was going to be taken. Sadly, our erieketing authorities do not appear to have learned the lesson that the sporting public are entitled to have details of the explanation and it is not enough simply to say that behaviour is acceptable to them. Fortunately, Ray IIIingworth, realised this and first thing the following morning conducted his own inquiry which resulted in him imposing the maximum fine possible of £2,000 on Mike Atherton with an apology to the match referce who may have been misled by the England Captain's comments. As I understand the position, Peter Burge had asked Atherton the specific question of whether he had any resin in his pocket. Atherton truthfully said no but did not go on to say that he did have dirt in his pocket, from the bowler's footmarks, which he used to dry his hands. It is not entirely clear whether Burge asked the England Captain if he had anything else in his pocket. If he did, then judging by Burge's reaction on Sunday, Atherton must have answered in the negative. So the cry went out for Atherton's head. With all tJie controversy about possible ball tampering on the Pakistan tour last season, should England not be setting an example and rise above all suspicion? Atherton must go and it should not matter that there is no-one really to replace him. For me, it is particularly significant that after the most careful examination of the ball, no damage of any kind could be found. Indeed no expert opinion has really been produced to say that dirt can illegally influence the performance of the ball. This makes Atherton's reluctance to disclose what he had in his pocket all the stranger. Accordingly, the only offence which he can be charged with is his economy with the truth so far as the mateh refcrce is concerned. Frankly, without witnessing the entire interview I am not prepared to pass judgment on Atherton. IIIingworth is known as a strict disciplinarian and I am prepared, to support his decision that the England Captain warranted a fine but not the sack. Atherton is a gritty individual, as demonstrated by the way he bounced back at Hcadingley. The reception given to him by the Yorkshire crowd demonstrated that he has got publie support and I cannot deny that my own decision is influenced by the fact that I happen to like the man. What a great pity that he should have allowed such an incident to happen and tarnish his image when he should be held out as a role model by our youth. It is up to him now to show that he deserves the faith which has been shown in him. Incidentally, he happens to be Marco's favourite player as well!
