Description
The subterraneans of Palazzo Farnese host the exhibition to the public of a prized
collection of carriages donated in 1948 to Piacenza Council by count Silvestro
Brondelli from Brondello, heir to count Dionigi Barattieri,who created such collection in
the first three decades of the 20th century. Thanks to the quality of the carriages and
to their good preservation (throughout the years they have undergone no integrations,
but by means of original parts) the Museum of Carriages is well known and
appreciated not only in Italy, but also all over Europe. The Barattieri Collection
includes two 18th century gala Berlins and four 19th century travel Berlins.The most
ancient piece is a Gala Berlin dating back to 1750, historically remarkable, branded
F.Loyer-Turin.In the 19th century, the most common type of carriage was the
Landau.Two models are displayed in the museum:a Ferretti-Roma (1880-90) and a
Cesare Sala-Milano (1890). The Hansom-Cab (1875-80) is rare because it was a
typically English vehicle, and there are less than ten exemplaries in Italian
collections.Other vehicles displayed: a Brougham-Clarence (1880-90), a Calèche
(1828-30), a Vittoria (1869), a Vis-à-Vis (1860-80), a Stanhope-Gig (1870-80), a DogCart (1880-90), a Brake (1870-80), a late 18th century Sulky, a Spyder (1840-60), a
Mail-Phaeton (1901). Some special carts are also displayed (hearses, firemen carts).
The entrance ticket also includes guided tours on Tue. Wed.,and Thur. 9.30 am Fri.
9.30 am- 3.30 pm Sat. and Sun. 9.30 am - 11.00 am - 3.00 pm - 4.30 pm. Guided
tours last about 1,30 hours
