Malattie a trasmissione oro
Inglese/English MALATTIE A TRASMISSIONE ORO-FECALE ORALLY OR FAECALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES COSA SONO? WHAT ARE THEY? They are all those infectious diseases caused by germs or viruses present in the faeces of both ill and healthy carriers (whether human or animal), or in certain foods that are not stored in ideal circumstance (stored at room temperature, for example, or kept in open containers). QUALI SONO? Le più diffuse sono la Salmonellosi e l’ Epatite A. WHICH ARE THEY? The most widespread are Salmonellosis and Hepatitis A. COME SI TRASMETTE L’INFEZIONE ? The most common form of spreading the infection is through the consumption of contaminated food; infection may also result from touching dirty surfaces that have had contact with infected faeces, or from touching faeces directly, and then passing food to the mouth without having been washed first. Insects as well (particularly flies) may transport germs from faces to food that is not adequately protected or stored COME FARE PER PREVENIRLE? HOW CAN WE PREVENT IT? It can be prevented by closely observing simple hygiene rules and having a vaccination where necessary. When choosing and preparing food, you should: - wash hands thoroughly before, during and after preparing food; - keep both kitchen surfaces and kitchen instruments clean when preparing food; - pay attention when buying food, and choose only those items which during preparation and storage can be guaranteed to have followed hygiene regulations; the label will give important information on where the food has come from, on how it is to be used and stored, its sell/by date, or best before date, and minimum and maximum storage times - all food must be well cooked and eaten immediately after cooking (in particular eggs, pork and chicken); otherwise, after cooking they should be kept in a refrigerator and thoroughly heated before eating - vegetables and salads should be washed thoroughly with drinking water, and fruit should be washed and peeled; - milk should be pasteurized (if bought from the farm, it should be boiled for several minutes before drinking); - ideally you should eat mature cheeses; - egg and milk based products should be kept in a refrigerator and eaten within one day - only drink guaranteed drinking water; - avoid allowing food to become contaminated after cooking by keeping it in sealed containers which are then placed in a refrigerator. Furthermore, before travelling to countries where orally and faecally transmitted diseases are widespread, you should make sure you protect yourself further by having the vaccinations against Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Cholera. WHAT IS HEPATITIS A? Hepatitis A is an inflammation of the liver caused by a virus. In the majority of cases infection occurs as a result of eating food such as raw or partly cooked seafood or drinking unclean or impure water. Patients eliminate the virus through their faeces for several weeks and in this way they can become a source of infection for other people. The disease is most widespread in developing countries and generally attacks children. HOW CAN YOU TELL IF YOU HAVE IT? After a period of between 15 to 50 days after infection, the first typical symptoms appear. These are: tiredness loss of appetite jaundice (yellowish colour of the mucous membranes, skin and eyes) faeces of a clear colour and dark urine high temperature abdominal pains and occasionally diarrhea. Sometimes, the illness may appear in a less severe form, that is, without obvious symptoms; a complete recovery is the most normal outcome. There is no specific cure. HOW CAN YOU PREVENT IT? Other than following the same basic simple hygiene rules as outlined for orally or faecally transmitted diseases, the only real form of prevention is the anti Hepatitis A vaccination, which is particularly recommended before travelling to countries where this illness is very widespread. This vaccination may also be given to family members who have the illness. The patient should avoid any contact with the public for about 7 days after the onset of symptoms. WHAT ARE THEY? They are infections that attack above all the intestines, caused by various forms of the Salmonella germ. These are bacteria that are normally present within the intestines of certain animals, and occasionally the intestines of humans. HOW CAN YOU TELL IF YOU HAVE IT? The main symptom, which becomes evident between 6 and 72 hours after infection is diarrhea; there may also be high temperatures, nausea, abdominal pains and vomiting. Usually the patient recovers without medical assistance. The weakest patients (old people, children, people with immune system problems) may have a more serious form of the illness, with for example localized infections around the bones or meninges or a form of bacteraemia (presence of germs in the blood stream). Salmonellosis may also result in a situation known as chronic asymptomatic carrier (“healthy carrier”). HOW DO YOU BECOME INFECTED? Through the consumption of contaminated food, above all meat, poultry, milk, eggs, sauces and creams, eaten raw or partly cooked; it is very rare for the infection to pass from a sick person to a healthy one through the faeces. Food contamination may occur at any time during production, preparation or after cooking. All food that is handled without paying attention to the basic rules of hygiene may become contaminated, and thus may become a source of infection for anyone who consumes it. HOW CAN YOU PREVENT IT? You can prevent it by applying the basic hygiene rules recommended for preventing orally and faecally transmitted diseases every day, above all if among the other family members there is either a patient or a healthy carrier, that is, a person who eliminates the germ through their faeces without having the disease. It is a good idea for the patient or sick person to use different toilet facilities to other family members until the symptoms (diarrhea) disappear. The patient should not go to school, work, or any other place where there is human contact, such as a gym or swimming pool until they are completely cured.
