(Seasonal opening from December to March
and from June to September)
Trekking in Piancavallo and in the Friulian Dolomites
Nature, sports, amusement and relaxation
The trekking routes of this map allow to explore the mountain and piedmont
territory of the province of Pordenone providing a wide range of levels of
difficulty to allow expert hikers as well as families with children to discover
enchanting sceneries characterised by amazing nature. The tourist resort of
Piancavallo is equipped to provide relaxation and amusement both in summer
and in winter, and the Friulian Dolomites Natural Park offers paths and routes
to explore the territory, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in all seasons.
The Campanile di Val Montanaia challenges the fittest trekkers, while the lake
of Barcis and the Caves of Pradis are an ideal destination for everyone wishing
to relax and amuse oneself. The Val Cellina, Val Tramontina, Val Cosa and
Val d’Arzino Valleys are waiting for you to enjoy a peaceful environment.
“Nature enthusiasts” will be charmed by the flora of these mountains as well
as by peculiar and rare ecosystems, such as that of the Magredi, and by the
clear and rushing sources of the Livenza river.
SEVEN RULES FOR HIKERS
1. For hikes in the mountains, choose
the routes according to your physical
and technical skills, gathering
information on the area to be visited.
If you walk in group, foresee the
duration in relation to the slowest hikers
and preserve energy to go back.
2. Choose clothes and equipment in
keeping with the difficulty and with the
length of the hike and carry in your
rucksack everything necessary for any
possible emergency situation and a
minimum first aid equipment.
3. Preferably, do not go on a hike in the
mountains on your own and, in any case,
tell someone the route you intend to
follow, informing them when you are back.
5. If in doubt, go back. Sometimes it is
better to give up than to risk or want to
face difficulties greater than one’s level,
skills, equipment. Preventively plan
alternative routes to go back.
6. Carry your garbage downhill.
Respect the flora and fauna.
Avoid leaving the path and taking
short cuts. Respect local cultures and
traditions, remembering that you are a
guest of the mountain people.
7. In case of need, call the mountain
rescue using the number 118.
The maps are purely indicative, they
have graphic value only, we suggest that
you carry specific and up-to-date maps.
4. Check the weather forecast and
constantly observe the development of
weather conditions.

THE CAI HIKING
DIFFICULTY SCALE
T = TOURIST
Itineraries on narrow roads, mule
tracks or easy paths, with well-marked
routes that provide no uncertainties or
orientation problems. They are generally
situated below 2000 metres and usually
lead to mountain pastures or Alpine
huts. They require a certain knowledge
of the mountain environment and fitness
to walk.
19
20
E = HIKING ROUTES
Routes almost always on paths, or on
traces of passage on various grounds,
usually with trail signs. Sometimes they
develop on open grounds, without paths,
but they are always suitably marked.
They can be on steep slopes and have
single passages or short stretches
on rocks, not exposed, not tiring nor
binding, thanks to the presence of
equipment that, however, does not
require specific gear. They require a
certain sense of direction, fitness to
walk and suitable hiking equipment.
EE = FOR EXPERT HIKERS
Generally marked routes that imply
the capability to move on particular
grounds. Paths or tracks on impervious
or treacherous ground (steep and/or
slippery slopes of grass or mixed of rock
and grass, or rock and debris). Varied
ground, at relatively high altitudes
(stony grounds, short non-steep snow
fields, open slopes without reference
points, etc.). Rocky stretches with
slight technical difficulties (equipped
routes, easy vie ferrate). They require:
general mountain experience and a good
knowledge of the Alpine environment;
confident gait and the absence of
dizziness; suitable hiking equipment
and physical preparation. The duration
of the paths includes the round route.
In the paths that are not loop routes it is
necessary to preliminarily think about
getting back to the point where you have
parked your car.

The Campanile di Val Montanaia is the
symbol of the Friulian Dolomites. This
soaring and spectacular tower stands
at the centre of a Dolomite basin and,
as an actor in the theatre, it is surrounded by huge jagged rocky wings.
Therefore, the viewpoints of the Campanile represent the best places where
spectators can fully enjoy the show
provided by nature.
The viewpoints can be reached from
the car park situated at the Pordenone
Alpine hut (Pian Meluth, Val Cimoliana,
22
reachable from Cimolais). The signs
invite to follow a path in the forest that
leads to a first observation point situated on a ridge, and then proceed to
the second, more spectacular point,
consisting of a large wooden terrace.
Follow the same route to go back.

The visit to the dinosaur footprints of
Casera Casavento is a route suitable
for everyone, particularly appreciated
by families.
The route starts in the hamlet of Lesis
(car park, reachable from Claut) from
which the valley-floor road starts (if
necessary it can be followed by car as
well), which goes up along the course
of the Cellina stream. Some hairpin
bends lead to the wide valley of Giere
(locality of Pian de Cea, where we suggest that you park your car). A ford
simplifies the crossing of the valley,
then the road continues until reaching
the basin where the Casera Casavento
hut is situated. From the Casera hut,
keep walking across the pasture in the
direction of the homonymous stream
(signs to the footprints) until reaching it. The footprints (the fragment of
a track) are imprinted on a rock, at the
base of a spectacular waterfall. Follow
the same route to go back.

This is geotrekking par excellence in
the Friulian Dolomites Park, because
along the path it is possible to interpret
and comprise the mechanisms of formation and shaping of the Dolomites.
From the square of Andreis (car park),
head towards the Visitor Centre (signs:
Centro visite) and then walk as far as
the bridge over the Ledron stream.
Here starts the path (sign), which goes
up the gravelly slopes of the periadriatic fault, the furrow of the Ledron
stream and the pinewood that leads
to the Pitte saddle, the highest point
of the route. The descent takes place
04
along the opposite side, which rapidly
leads to the shore of Susaibes Stream
(Aga dal Muscle source) and to the locality of Sott’Anzas, where it comes out
on a road. From here follow the signs to
San Daniele, you will reach the Park’s
Avifauna area and you will get back to
the square of Andreis.

It is a route suitable for everyone (in
particular the first part) that, with explanatory panels, shows the characteristics of the environment and the
meaning of the old kilns present.
From Tramonti di Sopra (rest area at
the Meduna stream, locality of La Cessa, car park) starts the (marked) path
that shortly leads first to Casa Titol
(farm), then to a viewpoint and, after
crossing a Norway spruce forest and
Casa Curs, descends to the asphalt
road (following it on the right it is possible to go back). Follow it westwards
(left)(near a stream you can go down on
the left to the mill and to the Pradiel
kiln) until turning again into the path
(on the right, sign) that goes up the
side, leads to some kilns and to Casa
Abis and then goes down an old road
bordered by stone walls until coming
back to the rest area (signs).

Also called Troi del Carbon (in Casso),
it is a path that, combined with others,
provides an insight into ancient past
(economy and agricultural life) and
allows to think over more recent past

catastrophes). The Vajont Dam and the
catastrophic landslide, in fact, are the
background of the whole route.

The track is clear and follows the
course of the Vajont stream parallel
to the valley floor, proceeding almost
horizontally as far as the characteristic
village of Casso, which is worth a visit
along its narrow paved streets. From
Casso descend to the Vajont Dam following the Troi de la Nongola (sign).
It is one of the routes of the Friulian
Dolomites Park suitable for everyone.
The view over the valley of Claut, the
plain of Pinedo and the surrounding
mountains is amazing.
From Erto (car parks in the Square and
on various upper road levels), climb in
the direction of the Val Zemola valley
until turning into the real path (signs).
INFORMATION AND DETAILS
Follow it until you reach the top of the
Col dei Piais hill (St. Gualbert’s small
church), then go down the first stretch
you went up before and, near a grassy
saddle with a water pool, head east
(right; sign) to go back downhill.
From Claut (locality of Conca Verde,

following the path that skirts the Chiadola stream, you will reach the village
of Massurie (St. Roch’s small church);
from here follow the climbing road that
leads first to the locality of Ciafurle

Mount Pala
From the ENEL electric booth of Col
Alto you will reach the Casera Caseratte hut where you will find the CAI
985 trail sign coming from Madonna
del Monte, which leads to the Saddle
(about 1460 metres); walking down a
comfortable path you will soon reach
the small valley that originates in the
near Forcella di Giais col. Leaving on
the left the path that leads to the CAI
path no. 971 (to the Casera Montelonga
hut), climb on the right in the near and
wide Forcella di Giais col. Keep following the CAI 988 trail sign, crossing at
high altitude the whole southern side
of Pala Fontana. Descend across level
meadows in the wide valley of the Casera di Giais hut, as far as a beautiful
Casera hut that, hidden by a ridge, appears at the last moment. Going up
behind the hut (CAI trail sign) you will
walk by a drinking trough and, along
a gravelly path across the forest, you
will reach a beech wood at the foot of
Mount Ciastelat. Following the trail
sign, go up the beechwood as far as
the ridge to the left of the top and from
here you will reach the summit. An ex-

the ridge on the right you will find a CAI
trail sign that among slight depressions leads to the crossroads with the
path no. 971 that leads to Piancavallo
passing through Pian delle More.
From the Casera Capovilla hut (1300
metres), along the cart way that leaves
the manège on the right, you will reach
an age-old beech. Going left you will
soon reach the Tornidor sources and
then the plateau where the Val Piccola
valley flows into the Val Grande valley.
After going up the valley and reaching the almost level end basin, climb
along the valley floor. Here it is possible to admire flowers of rare beauty.
On the Forcella Val Grande col (1926
metres) between the Cima Val Piccola
on the left (easily reachable along the
ridge) and the Cima Val Grande on the
right, you will see the orange/blue trail
sign of the Alta via no. 7 that reaches
all the summits of Alpago. After getting to the Forcella Val Grande col, we
suggest that you walk to the Forcella
Caulana col (1960 metres) where you
can admire the Val Cellina valley (RautRessetum range). Keep following the
orange/blue trail sign of the Alta via
no. 7 towards the left and, slightly uphill, go round the whole head of the Val
Sperlonga valley; after crossing a wide
Karst area, you will reach the win-
ter shelter of the Alpine hut, the near
Forcella Lastè col and the underlying
Semenza Alpine hut (2020 metres).
Follow the trail sign no. 923 as far as
the Casera Palantina hut skirting the
Cansiglio forest. Then follow the trail
sign no. 993 to the Baita Arneri hut,
where you will enjoy a wonderful view
over Piancavallo and Friuli’s plain and,
on clear days, up to Trieste’s gulf.
Nature Path
From the locality of Orton, after leaving your car in the car park opposite
the dairy (where you can buy excellent
cheeses), turn into the asphalt road
that climbs steeply as far as the crossroads in the locality of Fraspedane (0.9
km). From here go right until you reach
(0.4 km), along a level stretch, the
crossroads that on the left leads to the
road to Mount Pala (Agriturismo Malga
Polpazza sign). The route continues
on a forest road (4 km) that, through
beech woods and verdant pastures,
leads to the Malga Polpazza hut. From
here enjoy the view - with the aid of a
panoramic telescope as well - from the
Julian Alps to Trieste’s Gulf, up to the
Adriatic coasts and then back over the
Cansiglio in the Carnic Pre-Alps. The
Tagliamento is below you and it seems
like you can touch it.

CAI Path no. 821
From the locality of Stei de Count (car
park, reachable from Erto) follow the
signs to the Rifugio Maniago Alpine
hut, initially on a dirt road, then on a
path, until reaching it at the foot of
the imposing Mount Duranno. From
here the route follows the path that,
bordering the Val Zemola valley, links
the Alpine hut to the Casera Bedin hut
(signs) and that, afterwards, descends
to a forest track. It follows it southwards (uphill), crosses a tunnel and
reaches the wide grasslands and the
Cava Buscada Alpine hut. From the hut
go back walking down the same path
that leads to the Casera Mela hut and
to the near car park in the locality of
Stei de Conte.

From the square of Caneva climb towards the Castle and you will reach the
castle car park; keep walking through
the Castle gate following the marked
ridge path of “Col de Fèr”. Immediately
after the repeater descend towards Sarone on a dirt road and turn right into
a path that, crossing a small valley,
leads to the village of Sarone, which
you will have to cross in the direction
of Col di S. Martino. You will then reach
the small church and go down the dirt
road that leads out of the village of Sarone towards Fiaschetti; after crossing
the latter, follow the provincial road towards Caneva and, past the cemetery,
take the first road on the right (Via Col
de Fer) walking along it until coming
back on the Castle road and from there
to the square you started from.
