The door slammed, and the bolt shot into place. Flora immediately pulled on her dressing gown that so often used to fall just a touch too low on the front, but how was it, that there was just never enough marble to cover her up a bit more? Or perhaps, it was, as he had always suspected, a precise form of nineteenth century teasing, as lust disguised as modesty? at least all the nymphs in their boudoir she saw around the fairs, knew they were naked, and felt comfortable with that fact, but she instead, was stuck in this ridiculous “now –you -see, now- you-don’t” situation of revealing and at the same time, trying to be demure, and little short of ridiculous! Now, as often happened, Flora found herself grouped together with all her companions in a corner as it was evidently time for another exhibition in the gallery. The old man with a neckchief around his head, he too, representative of an allegory of something that had been lost in time, cleared his throat, began chewing the whiskers of marble that fell into his mouth, his sunken cheeks becoming animated and began as always to pontificate his wisdom as if from above: “From all accounts, it would appear contemporary art is here today!” For him any excuse was always as good as any, to complain about the decadence of modern times and how statues were no longer made like they once were. Every show was a chance for the usual battle over the Friendship Monument – the bust of a dashing young man with long sideburns, balancing awkwardly on a column that was far too narrow - that right now was wobbling in one direction ... and every time, without fail, Flora was thrown into question, becoming the chairwoman for a discussion she little understood, and in complete indifference to all the other statues, for as you can imagine, the mother only had eyes for that chubby baby of hers, the orphan who was always weary, even if no one had ever seen him raise the hoe on which he rested ... but after all, little did she mind exchanging a knowing look with this fine young man, even if she would have preferred to meet him in private, and be able to talk of quite something else, at least once. The bone of contention that night, was a heap of colorful cubes on the floor. The Friendship Monument had carefully listened to the words of someone who had staged the work, and tried to convince the old man that it was actually a photograph, translated into sculpture. “A photograph, off to a good start eh!?” Declared the old man, professing to be completely alien to any sort of modern devilry, “ in the portraits, and in the busts and you should know better, young man – an artist of any value, should really be able to grasp the timelessness of the persona, of the soul of who stands before him. Now, with photography, and digital at that, as you say, everything is flat, uniform, and lacking in character. “ “Always complaining on the contemporary means of representation, but you weren’t so displeased by TV!” Flora provoked him – they stayed for several decades in the same living room and she knew well how he was always wainting for Saturday to come in order to watch Fantastico. “You are missing the point,” thundered the Friendship Monument, and Flora began to feel that maybe she had put her foot in it. “Much of the art today no longer feels it has a duty to represent something, but rather reflect on the ways it represents itself, and embrace the mystery of the meaningfulness of image. In this sense, these speechless cubes place before us the enigma of an image, with that something which always escapes us, to the blind spot in our vision.” Dead silence. Flora had not even noticed, quite often it happened that it was the new tenants who had to defend themselves and who in turn accused the old man of being behind the times, but now instead, the cubes did not utter a word, they were motionless and silent. “But please! I can’t stand this esoteric language,” said the old guy, without even looking in the younger man’s direction. “I will stand eternal for what I believe in, for I am the endless passage of time without, the glorious fulfilment of life.” “How sad that at your age you still haven’t grasped anything about the hands that made you, that in that moment, they were not reflecting on the transience of your glory but rather on the decaying of your flesh, or making your nose more aquiline, and not on your brain. “The boy’s temper began to boil, and the pedestal to sway dangerously. “How can you dare to suggest such nonsense!” thundered the more senior to the younger man, who was adding, “We are but forces acting in the world, whose meaning is little more than to ask the same question, “ Where do I come from? To what space and time do I belong? “ Flora’s head was spinning, she, a country girl was unable to take part in these discussions if not only briefly, and on request. But suddenly there was a shout “hey, look there!” This softened the orphan, all sweaty, holding the paddle like a sword pointing over towards the corner of the trembling cubes. They moved ... holding the position assigned to them, but they were swaying back and forth, as if breathing, those closest banging against the walls and columns which with every breath became increasingly articulate ... not quite a voice, but more like a breath, a faint whisper. Perhaps if these two arrogant souls had stopped fighting they would have caught on sooner! Gradually all the statues became silent, the giggles and jokes drew to a halt, the baby stopped wailing and everyone started to look at those cubes as if any moment they were about to reveal a message of life or death ... the bunch of statues all took that direction as their clue, all fixed on that one corner, one moment more and the voices would reach a volume and articulation hard to understand ... When suddenly the door flew open and the light went on: the inauguration had began. And for the first time, with no apparent reason, the statues from their corner, felt themselves to be a part of it. Pietro Rigolo 2012 Loosely based on “Toy Story” (1995) by John Lasseter. Image: you may only possess part of it, and in order to understand it, you have to share it. With an icy look, you can reduce it to a vague semblance, while to desire it, will give it body, a body made up of changeable parts. Carefully moving parts of the whole idol, will in effect produce countless formations, that are broken up, fluid, alive. These will discreetly appeal to the voyeurism of who possesses the desire to collect, distinguish and compose the decorative elements of an image, to repeatedly generate new meaning and so remove any inconsistency.
