SINOSSI
Da bambino Boris Plotz, titolare della “Boris Plots - Pompe Funebri dal 1904”,
sognava esclusivamente due cose: la danza e Betty.
Betty era segretamente innamorata di Boris, ma non riuscendo ad opporsi ai piani del
padre, si era accasata con il sindaco del paese, un opportunista infedele.
Anche Boris aveva rinunciato ai suoi sogni e aveva cominciato a lavorare
nell’impresa di famiglia, una ditta di pompe funebri.
Negli anni le loro vite scorrono tranquille fino alla morte della suocera di Betty. Il
funerale viene commissionato alla “Boris Plots - Pompe Funebri dal 1904”, cosa che
scatena le ire del nuovo imprenditore di pompe funebri della città, l'americano Frank
Featherbed. Quest'ultimo è determinato a rivoluzionare il settore delle pompe
funebri in Inghilterra, tramite l’introduzione dell’elemento innovativo dei funerali a
“tema”.
Questa è anche l'occasione in cui Boris e Betty si trovano di nuovo vicini e,
mentre discutono i preparativi del funerale, si riaccende la scintilla di un tempo.
L'unico, insignificante ostacolo che li separa dal loro amore è il matrimonio di Betty.
Nel disperato tentativo di inseguire la felicità, i due decidono di inscenare la
morte di lei e di fuggire insieme.
Nel frattempo Featherbed prepara il suo primo funerale, e, con grande sorpresa
da parte dei familiari colpiti dal lutto, lo organizza sul tema di Star Trek. L’assistente
di Featherbed ha il compito di azionare gli effetti speciali che producono il fumo e
trasmettono la musica durante la cerimonia funebre.
Appena però schiaccia
l’interruttore che solleva la bara per l’effetto “fascio di luce”, l’interruttore rimane
incastrato e la bara si rompe fracassandosi per tutto il tetto.
Intanto il piano per simulare la morte di Betty, in cui viene coivolto anche il
medico condotto, procede senza interferenze. Come previsto, Boris e Betty ballano al
picnic cittadino ma improvvisamente Betty precipita da una scogliera. Tutti accorrono
ma nessuno può vedere che Betty è si è lanciata solamente per pochi metri finendo su
una piccola sporgenza pianeggiante della roccia. Boris trattiene la folla mentre Betty
riesce a raggiungere il fondo del burrone, dove il medico la cosparge di sangue finto.
Sembra proprio che i due riescano a farla franca, quando Featherbed insiste per
organizzare il funerale. Il marito di Betty sta per accettare la proposta, quando il
medico salva la situazione dichiarando che le ultime parole pronunciate da Betty in
punto di morte sono state: «Plots».
Al suo funerale, Betty ascolta le confessioni del marito infedele e della sua
amante che tramavano per ucciderla e mettere la mani sul suo denaro. Tutto questo
avviene mentre Betty è costretta a trattenere il respiro e a far finta di essere
morta. Dopo una serie di incidenti, Boris e Betty riescono a fuggire e si alleano
addirittura con Featherbed, per vendicarsi in modo adeguato del sindaco opportunista
e della sua amante omicida.

NICK HURRAN
Il regista
Dopo aver trascorso due anni al Royal National Theatre di Londra, NICK
HURRAN ha iniziato la sua attività di regista per la BBC e, successivamente, ha curato
la regia per due commedie/serie drammatiche vincitrici di ben due premi.
I suoi primi lungometraggi sono usciti nel 1997: Remember Me, realizzato per
Channel Four Films e il film televisivo The Perfect Match, al quale è stato assegnato
un premio, realizzato per Granada. Nel 1998 Girl's Night ha riscosso un grandissimo
successo ai festival del film di Berlino e al Sundance, mentre nel 1999 ha diretto per
la Columbia Tristar la commedia per adolescenti Virtual Sexuality. Nel 2001 è
ritornato alla BBC per dirigere la versione cinematografica adattata da Andrew
Davies tratta dal romanzo di Kingsley Amis Take A Girl Like You.
Il suo ultimo film, Plots With A View, interpretato da Brenda Blethyn,
Christopher Walken, Alfred Molina e da Naomi Watts, dovrebbe uscire in autunno e la
distribuzione nel Regno Unito e negli Stati Uniti è ad opera della Miramax.

Note di produzione
Il soggetto originale dello sceneggiatore debuttante Frederick Ponzlov era
ambientato negli Stati Uniti ma le produttrici americane Suzanne Lyons e Kate
Robbins di Snowfall Films, le quali sono state le prime ad opzionare il progetto, ne
hanno compreso le potenzialità per realizzare una tipica commedia inglese.
Lyons e Robbins hanno in primo luogo inviato il copione a Brenda Blethyn, la
quale, dopo averlo letto, ha accettato immediatamente di parteciparvi. Brenda ha
riferito al suo agente, Sally Long-Innes di ICM Londra, di essere “semplicemente
entusiasta del progetto”. Compiaciute del fatto che Brenda condividesse il loro
entusiasmo, Suzanne e Kate le hanno chiesto di indicare loro chi riteneva essere il
regista ideale per dirigere il progetto in questione e Brenda ha consigliato Nick
Hurran.
“La prima volta che ci siamo riunite con Nick Hurran ci rendevamo conto di
possedere la giusta sensibilità per realizzare “Plots With A View”, ha affermato
Lyons. Robbins ha ribadito i loro sentimenti: “Come ammiratrice di “Girls Night”
sapevo che Nick avrebbe potuto trasmettere sia i momenti comici che quelli
commoventi. Una volta incontrato Nick, abbiamo capito che si trattava della persona
giusta per dirigere “Plots”. Non avevamo in mente nessun altro ”.
Con l’inclusione di Brenda e Nick nel cast, Snowfall si è associata ai produttori
inglesi Jason Piette e Michael Cowan di Spice Factory, LTD. Vine International
Pictures si è unita al progetto subito dopo, con Marie Vine in qualità di produttrice
esecutiva e con Vine addetta alle vendite internazionali e nazionali.
Una volta ultimate le riprese, il film è stato proiettato per la prima volta per gli
acquirenti in occasione del Cannes Film Market, ricevendo una recensione entusiastica
da parte di Hollywood Reporter: “Una commedia pungente, elegantemente folle a cui
fa da sfondo la pazza concorrenza tra due imprese di pompe funebri gallesi, questo
film della Miramax potrebbe essere opportunamente intitolato “Quattro funerali e un
matrimonio”. La variazione eseguita rispetto al titolo di un precedente successo
cinematografico promette bene riguardo al risultato che “Plots With A View”
potrebbe ottenere al botteghino, scalando la cima benefica del passaparola”.

Nel 1997 le signore Lyons e. Robbins hanno fondato Snowfall Films, lavorando
con gli autori e sviluppando una grande quantità di progetti. Di recente hanno prodotto
la commedia romantica PLOTS WITH A VIEW, con Brenda Blethyn, Christopher
Walken, Alfred Molina, Lee Evans e Naomi Watts. Snowfall Films si è associata con la
casa di produzione britannica Spice Factory.
Miramax è la società di distribuzione nazionale e Vine International Pictures è
la società rappresentante di vendita, nonché produttore esecutivo.
Snowfall Films si è associata con Spice Factory e Vine International Pictures in
occasione del thriller BELOW THE SURFACE di Mark Smith, diretto dal regista
inglese Paul Marcus (“Prime Suspect”), che nel Regno Unito verrà realizzato a fine
autunno.
Insieme a Vine and Spice Factory, Snowfall Films sta producendo il thriller per
cinema d’essai JERICHO MANSIONS col regista spagnolo Alberto Sciamma, le cui
riprese inizieranno a New Brunswick, Canada il 30 settembre, con un cast tra cui
spiccano James Caan e Jennifer Tilly. La casa di produzione in questione sta anche
producendo il dramma d’azione DOG di Alberto Sciamma, interpretato da Gerard
Depardieu, in collaborazione con Spice Factory e con la casa di produzione e società
addetta alle vendite australiane Arclight. Tale produzione è in programma per
febbraio/marzo 2003.
Snowfall si è unita con la società canadese Nomadic per produrre il
lungometraggio di azione/suspense THE DANGER ZONE di Margaret e Bartley Bard,
diretto dal regista inglese Leszek Burzynski, il quale annovera nel cast Jason
Priestley.
Si è inoltre consorziata con Spice Factory, mentre Vine International
Pictures costituisce la società rappresentante di vendita, nonché produttore
esecutivo. Questo progetto cinematografico è in programma per novembre/dicembre
in Alberta, Canada.
Sempre in Canada, Lyons e Robbins stanno producendo il film drammatico
intitolato THE BIG NICKEL con il regista Nick Kendall e Orca Productions, in
associazione con Studio Eight Productions del Regno Unito.
Lo scrittore/regista Michael Elias (“The Jerk” “Frisco Kid”) curerà la regia del
dramma storico A DEAD MAN IN DEPTFORD, attualmente in produzione nel Regno
Unito presso Spice Factory.
Ben Kingsley e Billy Connolly hanno manifestato il
proprio interesse in questo progetto cinematografico. Vine International Pictures è il
rappresentante addetto alle vendite e il produttore esecutivo. Le principali riprese
fotografiche avranno inizio in Inghilterra nel mese di maggio, 2003.
Lyons e Robbins stanno anche producendo il thriller di suspense SHIVER con il
regista italo-canadese oggetto di grande considerazione Jerry Ciccoritti. Il cast
include

partecipazione

Brenda
Blethyn.
