TRANI CUP DI TENNIS
Tutto è pronto per l'inizio della nona edizione della Trani Cup, Torneo Internazionale di Tennis ATP, Challenger Maschile, valevole per l'attribuzione di punti ATP nella classifica mondiale (ATP
Single Rankings). Un'importante iniziativa dello Sporting Club di Trani, in collaborazione con il Comune di Trani, la
Provincia di Bari e la Regione Puglia, che
vanta un montepremi di ben 50.000,00
euro. Lo Sporting Club, presieduto dall’avv. Domenico Franco, ha voluto organizzare questa manifestazione per creare
in Puglia un appuntamento di grande interesse, non solo sportivo; per offrire la
possibilità ai turisti presenti a Trani di godere, non solo delle bellezze paesaggistiche e storiche del territorio, ma anche di

Morning on the beach, afternoon shopping and happy hour in the evening at
the pub, overlooking the port or in
Colonna. Here in Trani, in summer
2007, the “movida” never seems to take
a break, while the number of visitors increases exponentially, so much so that
Trani has become a symbol of free time
and entertainment.
During the holidays, there are plenty of
shows, both public and private, sports
competitions and cultural events. Trani
is also a VIP attraction, some of them
sailing in on breathtaking yachts, while
others prefer a more incognito approach,
such as the RAI newsreader Francesco
Giorgino, the actor Riccardo Scamarcio,
and the conductor Riccardo Muti. There
are also hundreds of tourists from Europe
and the British Isles, who flock to the
city’s hotels and bed & breakfasts.

LORIN MAAZEL IN THE CATHEDRAL
In the splendid setting of Trani Cathedral, the French maestro will be conducting the Toscanini Symphony Orchestra in a rendition of Beethoven’s 6th
and 5th symphonies.
The concert will be shown on RAI 2 and
on Sky, who will be putting on a “special
evening with Lorin Maazel” on their
culture channel “Leonardo” and a story
on Sky’s TG 24 news. The concert on July 10th is the first in a series that the
Toscanini, one of the world’s top symphony orchestras, will be playing in
Apulia. Trani is set to share with Rome
the honour of being the official national
home of the orchestra, with at least one
concert every year.

“Il Matrimonio di re Manfredi”, manifestazione curata e organizzata dall’Associazione storico- culturale “Trani Tradizioni”, con la direzione artistica di Carmela Cassese e Giuseppe Forni, si snoda
attraverso un’attenta ricostruzione di una
grande pagina di storia, quella sul controllo, da parte della casa Sveva, dei traffici marittimi tra le opposte sponde
adriatiche. Traffici che hanno aperto l’Oriente all’Occidente. Le celebrazioni organizzate per la rievocazione dell'evento
inizieranno il giorno 10, quando l’araldo
annuncerà “il grande evento” nelle strade
cittadine, fino ad arrivare in Piazza Quer-
cia, dove si svolgerà un suggestivo torneo
di Cavalieri e danze medioevali, accompagnati da esibizioni di giocolieri, sbandieratori, musici, mangiafuoco, tamburi
e odalische. La notte del 11 agosto, presso il porto storico di Trani, punto d’incontro di pellegrini, corsari, crociati e
marinai, dall’alto dell’antica rocca bizantina si vedrà ardere il “Grande Fuoco” che
annuncerà l’arrivo della bella Principessa
Elena di Epiro, promessa sposa di Re
Manfredi. La bella Principessa Elena insieme alla sua corte bizantina giungeranno via mare al Molo Santa Lucia al calar
del sole, seguirà il corteo storico e una
grande festa nelle sale del Castello Svevo,
arredate con mobili autentici di epoca
medioevale.
Il giorno 12, sempre al Castello Svevo si
terrà il “Grande Evento”: la celebrazione
del matrimonio con l’incoronazione della Principessa Elena seguito dal "Corteo
Trionfale" lungo le antiche strade di Trani. “Il Matrimonio di Re Manfredi” è
senz'altro un'occasione da non perdere
per visitare la città, in un’atmosfera particolarmente suggestiva.

L'Amet offre ai diportisti internet senza fili
Il porto "tecnologico"
Quello di Trani diventerà il porto
più tecnologico del sud Italia. L'Amet Spa, che eroga tutti i servizi
della darsena, ha infatti deciso di
far diventare il bacino portuale
della città uno dei porti turistici
più gettonati di Puglia, anche grazie a un "Hot Spot", un'area dove
è possibile navigare gratuitamente in internet mediante un collegamento internet wi-fi, ovvero
senza fili.
Basterà un computer portatile e
la predisposizione a questo tipo di
collegamento e la "grande rete"
sarà a portata di tutti. "È un ser-

9th Trani Cup, an ATP International
Men’s Challenger Tennis Tournament,
giving players the chance to earn points
for the ATP men’s singles rankings. This
is a crucial initiative for Trani Sporting
Club, in conjunction with the Municipality of Trani, and the Bari Provincial
and Apulian Regional administrations,
with prize-money amounting to 50,000
euros.
The Sporting Club, under its president
Domenico Franco, decided to hold the
tournament so as to create a great attraction for Apulia, giving visitors to the city
the chance to enjoy a top class sports event
in addition to the stunning landscapes
and history of the area.
And the results have proved that his intuition was right, as at the beginning of
2004 the Sporting Club was named a
Historical Apulian Club by the Lotto

KING MANFRED’S WEDDING
By the “Trani Tradizioni” cultural association
“King Manfred’s Wedding” is an event set
up by the “Trani Tradizioni” cultural association, under the artistic directorship
of Carmela Cassese and Giuseppe Forni.
Through an authentic reconstruction of a
great page in our city’s history, i.e. the
control of shipping between the coasts of
the Adriatic by the Swabian royal family. Shipping which opened up the Orient
to us here in the west.
The celebrations planned to enable us to
relive the event begin on the 10th, when
the herald will announce “the great
event” in the streets of the city, ending up
in Piazza Quercia, where a fascinating
Knights’ tournament will be held, with
medieval dance, accompanied by jugglers, flag-wavers, bards, fire-eaters,
drums and odalisks.
On the night of August 11th, in the old
port of Trani, where pilgrims, pirates,
crusaders and sailors cross paths, from the
top of the ancient Byzantine fortress, visitors can admire the “Great Bonfire”
which announces the arrives of the beautiful Helena of Epirus, King Manfred’s
bride-to-be. The beautiful Princess Helena, accompanied by her Byzantine court,
will sail into the Santa Lucia jetty at
sunset, after which there will be a historical procession and a great feast in the
halls of the Swabian Castle, which will
be furnished with authentic medieval
furniture.
On the 12th, the Swabian Castle will be
holding the “Great Event”: the wedding
ceremony, with the coronation of Princess
Helena followed by a “Triumphal Procession” through the old streets of Trani.
“King Manfred’s Wedding” is without
doubt a great time to visit the city, in a
particularly attractive atmosphere.

Trani looks set to become
the most hi-tech port in
southern Italy. AMET, the
company which provides
all the quayside services,
has decided to make the
city harbour one of the
most attractive tourist
marinas in Apulia, including a “Hot Spot”, an area
where users can go online for free via a wi-fi
link.
If you have a laptop computer and a wireless device, then the internet
will be yours for the taking. “It is an innovative
service which we offer to
yachts that berth here in
Trani,” says AMET president Alfonso Mangione,
“but it will also be accessible from ashore, along
the whole quayside: that
means residents of the
port area, shops and of-
fices, and anyone who
comes to the area armed
with a laptop”. This hitech project, under the
“Sperimentazione E-City”
project, enabled Trani
Municipality’s private enterprise, a member of the
Pugliatech consortium, to
get funding from the Economic Development Ministry for experimental interactive and online services
via
broadband,
which now covers around
10% of the municipal
area and connects most
of the municipality’s administrative
buildings.

Un’estate da “tutto esaurito”: un obiettivo ambizioso per Bisceglie, ma non impossibile grazie a ingredienti di prim'ordine come, il mare, la movida, il divertimento sul lungomare da mattina a sera, dove le spiagge restano aperte tutta la
notte, e poi i tanti locali di tendenza.
Ma, soprattutto, grazie al calendario di
eventi realizzato dall’Amministrazione
comunale, ricco di nomi prestigiosi di
grande richiamo. Un’estate per tutti i
gusti, quindi: Bisceglie infatti ha pensato anche alle famiglie dedicando loro
appuntamenti ad hoc. Manifestazioni,
concerti ed eventi che si terranno, ogni
fine settimana, nello straordinario Anfiteatro del Mediterraneo e in piazza del
Palazzuolo, nel cuore della città.

A sell-out summer - an ambitious aim for
Bisceglie, but by no means an impossible
one, thanks to top-quality ingredients like
the sea, the movida, seafront entertainment from morning to night, where the
beaches are open all night, and the many
trendy clubs. But especially , thanks to an
events calendar created by the city authorities, with plenty of famous names to draw
the crowds. A summer for all tastes, leaving no-one out: Bisceglie has even been

thinking of families, with events and concerts specially for them, every weekend, in
the outstanding Anfiteatro del Mediterraneo amphitheatre, and in piazza del
Palazzuolo, in the heart of the city.
The Tourism Agency has set up a programme which starts in early July, with one
of the legs on the Giro d’Italia a Vela, the
yacht race around Italy. On Sunday the
8th, the party moves on to Largo Salsello,
for a bubbly evening: on the stage will be

Dal 21 al 28 luglio l’Anfiteatro e il Centro Storico ospiteranno il Festival dei
Popoli del Mediterraneo: otto serate dedicate a musica, folklore e scambi culturali tra i popoli del “mare nostrum”. Si
parte sabato 21, con la musica israeliana
e libanese, per proseguire domenica 22
con i suoni di Grecia e Algeria; lunedì
23 la Mizan Orchestra accompagnerà la
Danza del Ventre, mentre martedì 24 lo
spazio sarà dedicato all’approfondimento culturale con un forum che impegnerà nomi autorevoli del panorama culturale nazionale. A seguire, il concerto delle Faraualla. Mercoledì 25 il folklore pugliese accompagnerà la degustazione di
pietanze tipiche dei paesi mediterranei,
mentre giovedì 26 sarà dedicato a una
riflessione sui temi della pace con il concerto dell’Alexian group. Venerdì 27 andrà di scena il Giuliani day, con un concerto per chitarra dedicato al grande
compositore biscegliesi e agli autori suoi
coevi dei Paesi Mediterranei. In chiusura, sabato 28, un appuntamento insolito: il concerto all’alba, per salutare il sole che sorge sul Mediterraneo e, in serata, musica egiziana e concerto dei Cupa
Trance.
L’estate biscegliese riserva anche un ampio spazio all’intrattenimento colto: la
rassegna “Notti Adriatiche”. Si inizia il
17 luglio con la Fiesta Flamenca di Antonio Marquez; il 29 luglio “Puccini e la
Luna”, serata lirica con Francesca Patanè e Cecilia Gasdia, e il 2 agosto “Lungo Viaggio verso la Notte”, prima teatrale nazionale con Remo Girone e Annamaria Garnieri. Altri due appuntamenti il 7 agosto con Milva e lo spettacolo “Ieri e oggi” e Enrico Brignano, il
12 agosto, con il suo show comico. Anche qui, la prevendita dei biglietti sarà
curata dai circuiti abituali.
L’estate Biscegliese offre tante altre opportunità, con decine di manifestazioni

Umberto Smaila, star of many VIP summers on the Costa Smeralda in Sardinia,
and a great holiday crowd pleaser. The
16th July sees the turn of Zero Assoluto, in
an RTL concert in Piazza Vittorio
Emanuele. Both events are free, as are the
concerts by Facchinetti, Povia as well as
other dates which are still to be confirmed.
Sergio Caputo’s distinctive music will fill
the Anfiteatro Mediterraneo on July 12th
(tickets are already on sale at the usual venues). And an outstanding event is the concert on 31st July at the Arena del Mare: on
the stage will be that ageless dance music
icon, Dionne Warwick. And Bisceglie
could not miss out on the top name in the
summer 2007 hit parades - Tiziano Ferro’s
concert is on August 16th, again at the
Arena del Mare (usual ticket outlets).
From July 21st to 28th, the Amphitheatre
and the Old City will host the Mediterranean Peoples’ Festival: eight evenings
dedicated to music, folklore and cultural
exchanges between the populations of the
Mediterranean. Starting on Saturday
21st, with Israeli and Lebanese music, followed by the sounds of Greece and Algeria
on Sunday 22nd; on Monday 23rd the
Mizan Orchestra will be playing on a Belly Dance evening, while Tuesday 24th will
be taken up by a cultural evening, with a
forum in which several authoritative figures from the Italian cultural scene will be
taking part. This will be followed by a concert by Faraualla. On Wednesday 25th,
taste the typical dishes of Mediterranean
countries to the sounds of Apulian folklore,
while Thursday 26th will be dedicated to
a reflection on the topic of peace with a
concert by the Alexian group. Friday 27th
is Giuliani day, with a concert for guitars
dedicated to the great Bisceglian composer
and his contemporaries in Mediterranean
nations. To finish the festival, Saturday
28th begins with an unusual event: the
dawn concert, to greet the sun as it rises
over the Mediterranean, while the evening
promises Egyptian music and a concert by
Cupa Trance.
Summer in Bisceglie also means plenty of
room for cultural entertainment, with the
“Notti Adriatiche” season. It begins on July 17th with Fiesta Flamenca by Antonio
Marquez; on July 29th “Puccini e la Lu-
na” (“Puccini and the Moon”), an opera
evening with Francesca Patanè and Cecilia Gasdia, and on August 2nd comes the
Italian première “Lungo Viaggio verso la
Notte”(“Long Journey into the Night”),
with Remo Girone and Annamaria Garnieri. Two more dates for your diaries are
August 7th with Milva in a recital entitled
“Ieri e oggi” (“Yesterday and today”), followed by the comedian Enrico Brignano
on August 12th. Again, tickets will be
available from the usual outlets.

Premiare le “eccellenze” culturali, stori-

aiuti umanitari nel mondo, ma anche
rievocare e divulgare le vicende storiche

questi gli obiettivi della cerimonia-spettacolo "Premio Cavalieri di Malta", che
si celebrerà presso il Parco Archeologico

dell’Ordine dei Cavalieri di Malta, dei
suoi legami con questa città, all’epoca
chiamata Casal Trinità, che l'Ordine ha
L'Ordine dei Cavalieri
Nato nel 1113 come Ordine
Ospedaliero di San Giovanni
di Gerusalemme (con la Bolla
di Papa Pasquale II) con l’intento di assistere i poveri e
gli infermi, si “armò” successivamente per difendere i
Luoghi Santi della Palestina
occupati dai Mussulmani assumendo così anche un carattere militare. Raymond Du
Puy creò la classe dei “Cavalieri” (1121): accanto agli
ospedali si moltiplicarono in
tutta la Terrasanta i castelli e
i domini dei Gerosolimitani, la
cui partecipazione alle vicende belliche degli stati cristiani
e dei crociati si accentuò con
una progressiva crescita di
influenza politica su tutto il
mondo latino d’Oriente. Dopo
la conquista di Rodi (1310),
riconosciuta dalla Santa Sede
e dall’Imperatore di Bisanzio,
l'Ordine divenne un singolare
principato cavalleresco e reli-

gioso, con prerogative di stato sovrano, dotato di leggi,
esercito, flotta navale e moneta propria. Sconfitti, nel
1522, da Solimano il Magnifico, i Gerosolimitani si rifugiarono in Italia e poi, dal
1529, a Malta, concessa in
perpetuo
dall’Imperatore
Carlo V e scelta quale nuovo
caposaldo della lotta contro i
Turchi. Il possesso dell’isola
fu approvato da Papa Clemente VII con la Bolla del 25
aprile 1530 e da allora l’Ordine si chiamò “di Malta”. L'Ordine gode, ancora oggi, della
qualità di soggetto giuridico
internazionale e ha come fine
“l’affermazione e la diffusione
delle virtù cristiane di carità e
di fratellanza. Esercita le opere di misericordia, soccorrendo specialmente gli ammalati, gli emigranti, i profughi,
l’infanzia abbandonata, i feriti di guerra, ecc”.

film director Sergio Rubini, from the psychiatrist and writer Vittorino Andreoli to
the showman Renzo Arbore, not forgetting
the famous faces from the Italian national singers’ football team and representatives of the Community of Sant’Egidio
and Médicins Sans Frontières: these are
the names from the worlds of Culture,
Sport, Cinema and Social Welfare who
will be receiving the first “Cavalieri di
Malta” prizes on July 21st. Created by the
municipality of Trinitapoli with the High
Patronage of the President of the Italian
Republic, of the Italian Prime Minister’s
Office, of the Sovereign Military Order of
Malta, of the Italian Ministry for Culture,
the Apulian regional government and the
Province of Foggia.
It is a way of rewarding the excellence of
event

Apulia’s cultural, historical and scientific
celebrities and institutions dedicated to
peace and humanitarian aid around the
world, but also of re-evoking and unfolding the history of the Order of Maltese
Knights: these are the aims of the "Premio
Cavalieri di Malta" ceremonial show
which will be taking place at Trinitapoli’s
Archaeology Park.
“This international event provides a boost
for individual growth and encourages social interaction by breathing new life into
our sense of belonging and cultural identity”, explains Ruggero di Gennaro, the
mayor of the town. “And at the same time,
we want to re-tell the events that make up
the history of the Order of Maltese
Knights, their ties with this city, which

The Order
of Maltese Knights
Founded in 1113 as the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of
Jerusalem (by a Papal bull of
Pope Paschal II) with the aim
of assisting the poor and infirm, the Order of Malta then
“armed” itself to defend the
Holy Land of Palestine occupied by Muslims, and thus became a military order. Raymond Du Puy created the
class of “Knights” (1121):
throughout the Holy Land,
castles and domains of the
Knights of Jerusalem sprung
up alongside the hospices,
and the Knights played an increasing part in the battles of
the Christian states and Crusades, gaining greater influence in the Orient. The order
captured the island of Rhodes
in 1310, and once the conquest had been recognised by
the Holy See and by the
Byzantine Emperor, the Order
became a unique knightly and
religious principality, with the
prerogatives of a sovereign
state, with its own laws,
army, fleet and coinage. Defeated in 1522 by Suleiman
the Magnificent, the Knights
of Jerusalem fled first to Italy,
and then in 1529 to Malta,
which they chose as their
fortress in their fight against
the Turks and which was
granted to them in perpetual
fiefdom by Emperor Charles
V. Their possession of the island was approved by Pope
Clement VII in a bull dated
25th April 1530, and since
then the Order has been
known as “Maltese”. The Order still enjoys sovereignty
under international law and
its goal is to “affirm and propagate the Christian virtues of
charity and brotherhood. The
Order performs works of mercy, particularly by aiding the
sick, emigrants, refugees and
exiles, abandoned children
and victims of war, etc”.

Il legame tra i Cavalieri
di Malta e Trinitapoli
Comprata dai Cavalieri di
Malta in sostituzione della
Commenda Magistrale di Treviso, Casal Trinità (oggi Trinitapoli) rientrava nella giurisdizione del Gran Priorato di
Venezia. Fra don Antonello
Gagliotti dei baroni di Terranova Padovana fu il primo
Commendatore di Trinitapoli,
mentre, Fra Don Antonio Maria Mastrilli, dei marchesi di
Salice, fu l’ultimo.
Il Commendator Caracciolo
nel 1720 fece stilare un nuovo Cabreo, da cui si apprende che fu proprio lui a volere
il restauro del Palazzo dei
Commendatori (l’attuale Municipio) e l’ampliamento della Chiesa della Trinità, che
era sotto il patronato dell’Ordine e il cui portale, in effetti, era sormontato dallo
stemma in pietra dei Cavalieri di Malta. In questa chiesa,
ancora oggi, si conserva la
“Croce Patriarcale” portata,
verso la fine del XIII secolo,
dall’Arcivescovo di Nazareth,
in Palestina; fino a Barletta,
dove questi riparò a seguito
dell’occupazione della Terra

Santa da parte dei Mussulmani. La reliquia fu poi offerta, verso la fine del XVI secolo, al Gran Maestro dell’Ordine di Malta, Frà Ugo Loubens
de Verdalle, il quale la donò
alla Commenda Magistrale
del Casale della Trinità. Da
allora, il sacro pezzo di legno,
sagomato a croce, è custodito in una teca incastonata al
centro di una preziosa croce
d’oro, ornata di pietre preziose.
A seguito dell'occupazione di
Malta da parte di Napoleone,
nel 1798, venuto meno il dominio melitense sulla città,
con relativa annessione al
Regno delle due Sicilie, prima, e ai Borboni poi, il ricordo della presenza dell'Ordine
sopravvive nello stemma comunale, che riporta una banderuola rossa col drappo carico della Croce ottagonale di
Malta.
Tra i suoi concittadini, Trinitapoli annovera, da circa 60
anni, il Nobile Cavaliere di
Malta, Hermes Filipponio,
storico locale e dell’Ordine a
cui appartiene.

La manifestazione presenta una scaletta
di grandissimo prestigio: è, infatti, prevista la partecipazione di Riccardo Scamarcio e Sergio Rubini (per la sezione
cinema), di Gianni Ciardo (cabaret); di
Rafhael Gualazzi (Jazz); di Josè Perez
(danza); dell’Orchestra di Mario Rosini, di Linda e le Vibrazioni (musica leggera), di Vittorino Andreoli (cultura),
della Comunità di Sant’Egidio (sociale)
e di tanti altri.
Al termine dell’evento, a Trinitapoli sarà “Notte Bianca”: a cura degli Assessorati al Turismo e alla Cultura (Flaminio
Aquilino) e alle Attività Produttive (Rosanna Izzillo). L'avvenimento coinvolgerà cantine, opifici agroalimentari ed
esercizi commerciali.
Un evento nell’evento, dunque, grazie
al quale oltre agli spettacoli organizzati
in vari punti della città, con la partecipazione di alcuni ospiti intervenuti al
“Premio Cavalieri di Malta”, potranno
essere visitate le bellezze di Trinitapoli
come, i siti archeologici, il Museo, la Pinacoteca, allestita presso il Palazzo dei
Commendatori di Malta, i monumenti
e la Casa di Ramsar, il tutto accompagnato da degustazioni enogastronomiche.

1798”. The line-up of stars is quite spectacular - they include Riccardo Scamarcio

At the end of the event, there will be allnight celebrations (called a “Notte Bianca”) in Trinitapoli sponsored by the municipal agencies for tourism, culture
(Flaminio Aquilino) and production
(Rosanna Izzillo).
The event will provide a welcome boost for
wine cellars, food producers and commercial outlets. So it is a sort of event within
an event, combining shows performed at
various places within the city, with guest
speakers from the “Cavalieri di Malta”
prize, with visits to the attractions of
Trinitapoli, such as the archaeological
sites, the Museum, the Pinacoteca gallery
located in the Palace of the Commanders
of Malta, the monuments and the House
of Ramsar, all accompanied by food and
wine tastings.
The link between
the Knights of Malta
and Trinitapoli
Purchased by the Maltese
Knights as a replacement for
the Magistral Commenda of
Treviso, Casal Trinità (as
Trinitapoli was known) came
under the jurisdiction of the
Grand Priory of Venice.
Don Antonello Gagliotti of
the barons of Terranova
Padovana was the first Commendatore of Trinitapoli,
while the last was Don Antonio Maria Mastrilli, of the
Marquises of Salice.
In 1720, Commander Caracciolo commissioned a new
Cabreo, from which we learn
that it was his will that the
Palace of the Commendatori
(today’s town hall) be restored, and that the Church
of the Trinity be extended.
The Church was funded by
the Order, and its portal was
decorated with the Knights
of Malta’s coat-of-arms in
stone. And the church still
holds the “Patriarchal Cross”
which was brought to Apulia
from Palestine by the Archbishop of Nazareth, who
sought refuge in Barletta after the Holy Land was occupied by Muslims.
The relic was then offered to
the Grand Master of the Order
of
Malta,
Hugues
Loubens de Verdalle, who
donated it to the Magistral
Commenda of Casale della
Trinità. Since then, this holy
piece of wood, shaped into
the form of a cross, has been
held in a casket with a golden cross set in the middle,
bedecked
with
precious
stones.
Following the occupation of
Malta by Napoleon, in 1798,
Trinitapoli was annexed first
by the Kingdom of the Two
Sicilies, and then by the
Bourbons; the memory of
the Order’s presence survives in the municipal coatof-arms, which features a
red pennant with the octagonal Maltese cross.
