Repertoire - Michael Spyres
Biography Michael Spyres was born in Mansfield (Missouri) where he grew up in a family of musicians. He began his studies in the U.S.A. and continued them at the Vienna Conservatory. Spyres first sprang to international attention as an ensemble member of Deutsche Oper Berlin where he made his debut as Tamino in Die Zauberflöte in 2008. Since then he has debuted at some of the most prestigious opera theatres and festivals worldwide such as the Teatro alla Scala (Belfiore in Il viaggio a Reims and subsequently Rodrigo in La donna del lago), at the Salzburg Festival (Betulia Liberata), the Semperoper Dresden (Gianetto in La gazza ladra), the Rossini Opera Festival Pesaro (Baldassare in Ciro in Babilonia, a solo concert and Rodrigo in La donna del lago), the Liceu in Barcelona (Les Contes d'Hoffmann), the Royal Opera House Covent Garden (La donna del lago), the Lyric Opera of Chicago (Die Fledermaus) and La Monnaie (Arnold in Guillaume Tell). Upcoming engagements include the title role in Terry Gilliam's new production of Benvenuto Cellini at the English National Opera, Aureliano in Palmira in Pesaro, Arnold in Guillaume Tell in Bologna, Conte di Libenskoff in Il viaggio a Reims in Amsterdam, Tempo in Il trionfo del tempo e del disinganno at the Aix-en-Provence Festival as well as the title part of Mitridate, re di Ponto in Paris (Théâtre des Champs Elysées), London (Covent Garden) and Brussels (La Monnaie). He has worked with conductors such as Riccardo Muti, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Valery Gergiev, Alberto Zedda and Evelino Pidò. Michael Spyres has recorded Rossini's La gazzetta, Otello and Le siège de Corinthe (Naxos), Mazzoni's Antigono (Dynamic), Meyerbeer's Les Huguenots (ASO), Schumann's Faust-Szenen (ASO), Verdi's Otello (CSO) and his solo album A Fool For Love (Delos). Ciro in Babilonia from Pesaro (Opus Arte) and Les Contes d'Hoffmann from Barcelona (Erato) are available on DVD/Blu-Ray. From a very musical family in Mansfield, Missouri, the buckle of the Bible Belt: 14 different churches cater for 1,300 people. Both my parents were music educators – band, choir and drama. So we grew up acting and singing as a family, a sort of the Hillbilly von Trapps of the Mid West. We were the music in our entire town, always available for weddings and funerals. My brother Sean is a teacher but he also sings and appeared on the Naxos recording of Rossini’s Otello with me. My sister’s an actress and has just won best performer in a musical. Why does the US produce so many good singers? This may sound strange but I believe it’s because we have much less opportunity. I call it the virtue of being an outsider. It depends on where you are in the US, but where I come from, most people don’t realise you can live off singing. There are so few opera houses in the US compared to a country like Germany, so the singers that make it tend to be good. On the other hand, we have superb facilities in the US. Indiana University has 2,000 undergraduate singers with a stage bigger than the Met and puts on eight operas a year. When did you realise you had a voice? I sang in church as a child and I always wanted to be a singer. And then when I was 18 I had a great singing teacher for just two years at Missouri State University. I thought I was a baritone, as I have this deep speaking voice; but he convinced me to try for tenor. It took me four or five years to be able to sing anything above a G. I miss the effect of singing baritone as it gives you great sensations in the throat and chest, while the tenor voice resonates up there in the head. Why did you do it then? To do French Grand Opera characters, most of which are for tenors but with a tendency to gravitate towards the dramatic baritone register. I had to learn to sing Mozart and Rossini tenor roles first. I went to Vienna, which was great for me as I’m a very independent person, a real autodidact, 30 and I wasn’t required to have a teacher. But I got superb coaching from diction specialists who worked at the State Opera and in Salzburg. When did your big break occur? At an audition at the Bad Wildbad Rossini Festival in the Black Forest. I’d been wasting my time pitching for standard repertoire when all I wanted to do was the crazy obscure repertoire. Fortunately I sang the title role in Rossini’s Otello there one year after, a true ‘baritenor’ role which corresponds to my voice. Being in the Deutsche Oper ensemble was a plus. People say it can destroy your voice, but I think nobody can ruin your voice except yourself. You get put through the ringer but you have to have the technique to cope and the ability to decide whether it’s good for you.The only problem in Berlin was that it felt like a factory. For my first Magic Flute, I had a total of eight hours’ rehearsal and didn’t meet the Queen of the Night until I was on stage. You seem determined to sing a wide variety of roles People stick to categories too much. I will get flak for this but so many singers don’t understand technique and end up singing improperly. They think, ‘I’ve got this big sound so I’m just going to sing Puccini and Wagner’. Professional advice can be weird too. When I was 21, I auditioned in Philadelphia, I sang some Mozart and then threw in ‘Amor ti vieta’ from Fedora, which nobody should sing before they’re 40, and the jury told me to stick to it and avoid Mozart! Why this attraction for the French repertoire? Singing in French is so much based on the words. One of my pet peeves is singers who sing this repertoire as if it were Italian. It needs, on the contrary, Germanic precision mixed in with bel canto. I think US singers should go more into French music as our technique is a conglomeration: we have the body for bel canto but we’re sticklers for diction. This stems from a paranoid attitude: ‘Oh God, we’re so dumb, we only have one language, we need to be better than the rest at the words in foreign music’. My favourite singers are Alain Vanzo, Georges Thill and the Belgian André d’Arkor. Their French style is what I strive for, especially Thill who created his own style and technique. The tenor sound in France between 1930 and 1960 is what everyone should be aiming for. I also find French tenor roles like Raoul (Les Huguenots), Hoffmann and Faust in La Damnation more interesting as you have to use your acting skills. Italian characters tend to be more one-dimensional. And the whole approach in France was more original: look at La muette de Portici with a mute in the title role. Quite revolutionary. She even has a ‘conversation’ with the tenor on stage. Tell me about singing Berlioz. People have often told me to steer clear of La Damnation de Faust on the grounds that it’s a voice-killer, but this is mainly because singers today take a very heavy approach to it. But up to the 1950s, tenors used a brighter, fast vibrato and that also makes good acoustic sense. It’s all to do with physics as a rapid vibrato will maintain buoyancy and slow down as the sound waves spread around a theatre whereas a slow vibrato will quickly sound wobbly. Don’t you feel Berlioz tended to write against the voice? Not for me. He had a lot of contact with singers. He was very smart. Everything he did was for a good reason. In Damnation, Faust starts out as an old man but then he has a rebirth and the voice gets lighter before darkening again when he loses his love. And Berlioz truly understood acoustics, saying audience members had to vibrate in sync with the performers. That’s why he increased the orchestration for the Requiem – to take advantage of church acoustics. Michael Spyres sings the title role of Berlioz’s Benvenuto Cellini at English National Opera, which opens on 5 June. www.eno.org/cellini For further details, including Spyres’ full performance schedule and discography visit www.michaelspyres.com w w w. o p e r a n o w. c o . u k MAIN STAGE | Life with my Voice Dax BeDell Tenor Michael Spyres applies his out-going, all-American musical upbringing to the technical disciplines and musical subtleties of the French repertoire. Chaque rôle abordé me fait grandir. Propos recueillis par Thierry Guyenne OPERA NEWS USA JULY 2013 Michael Spyres, speaking by telephone from his home near Springfield, Missouri, sounds a little hoarse, like Jerry Orbach’s overworked Lennie Briscoe on Law and Order. “I don’t sound much like a tenor today,” he laughs. Spyres has just returned from performing Leicester in Washington Concert Opera’s Maria Stuarda. “Right in the break the entire time you’re on,” he says. “A throat-killer! Luckily, technique can get you through it.” Some tenors view playing one of the male roles in Donizetti’s “Three Queens” operas as a thankless chore, but Spyres says, “I just did the Verdi Requiem for the first time, and La Muette de Portici and Les Contes d’Hoffmann, so it was nice to focus on beauty of line and sound and being a bit more vapid, so the other characters would have the strong dynamic. You have to fit into a hole, sometimes.” Spyres grew up in Missouri; his parents are both retired music teachers. Initially, he studied as a baritone with Robert Mirshak, currently an artist manager in New York. “I was doing that faux-baritone sound that young singers do,” Spyres recalls, “and Robert said, ‘Let’s try to find your actual sound.’ It took me six years before I was comfortable saying I was a tenor. I was around twentyeight. Everyone I’ve talked to who made that transition says they initially want to go back to being a baritone. It’s easier to raise the throat, and you’re able to feel you’re in control of the voice, because the resonant place where the baritone rings out are the places you can really feel in your throat. A tenor has to lock it into place — it’s a weird sensation.” He’s pleased that many of his current roles, such as Masaniello in La Muette de Portici and Rodrigo in La Donna del Lago, were written for voices like his. “The modern baritone didn’t come around until about 1800,” he says. “Most people were a little of both. Monteverdi’s Orfeo was written for a baritenore — no extreme lows or highs, as was later the case. Mazzoni wrote a lot of stuff for castrati, but he was one of the only ones who used this voice type, singing a high D/D-flat down to low G and F in the baritone range. After Rossini, this voice type fizzled because of orchestrations getting bigger. But there were always people with voices like mine.” This summer, Spyres performs Arnold in Guillaume Tell at the Bad Wildbad Rossini Festival and Rodrigo in La Donna del Lago at Pesaro’s Rossini Festival. This area of the repertoire still feels right — far more so than the role of Rodolfo in La Bohème, in which he made his stage debut at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis in 2002. “A lot of Puccini doesn’t resonate with me,” he admits. “I like so many of the operas up until the mid-1800s, because it left a lot of room for making your own decisions. Puccini, a lot of it, is almost paint by number. ‘The audience is going to cry at this moment.’ Not a lot of room for interpretation.” Ilaria Badino OPERA NOW UK MARCH 2012 IN THE WINGS | Talent spotting Artist of the month MICHAEL SPYRES W ith 43 operatic roles in four languages already under his belt, the young American tenor Michael Spyres is not an artist who enjoys resting on his laurels. ‘My biggest challenge,’ he says, ‘is to slow myself down and realise that I can’t fit everything in the universe into my mortal existence!’ Born into a musical family in Mansfield, Missouri, Spyres grew up performing from a very early age, and credits his parents as ‘my band, choir, and drama teachers’. Rather poignantly, they named him after an uncle who died at the age of 37 from a rare form of throat cancer. ‘I grew up with the story of how Michael wanted to become an opera singer but never really got there,’ he explains, ‘so I always felt like it was my destiny to fulfil his wish.’ During his years of training, initially in the US and later at theVienna Conservatory, Spyres cites his choir teacher Dr Guy Webb and voice teacher Dr Robert Mirshak as key influences: ‘Both were wonderful singers in their own right, but they taught me such invaluable lessons in how to think about singing and how to become a well-rounded individual. They showed me how important concentration is in all aspects of life and for that I am eternally grateful.’ Another defining experience for Spyres came during his years as a member of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, when he was called to step into the role of Tamino (in Mozart’s The Magic Flute) at extremely short notice: ‘I literally met the conductor and the Queen of Night on stage. It was a very surreal experience because so many subjects explored by the role of Tamino (self-doubt, maturity, confusion) were my problems in that moment ... truly life imitating art! Tamino is one of my favourite roles because it is the manifestation of a human on a journey to maturity and the road to enlightenment, which is something I feel we are all striving for in one way or another.’ As evidenced by his recent solo recital disc, A Fool For Love (reviewed in the February issue of Opera Now), Spyres’s repertoire is very wide-ranging, however he feels a particularly strong affinity for the music of Mozart and Rossini: ‘These two men force you to have a balance of musical expression, self-control and technique that results in truly high art.’ Psychological depth is also important in the roles that he takes on, with favourite characters being those which ‘take me on a journey where I learn from them along the way: Albert Herring, Tom Rakewell, Tamino, and Nemorino’. The 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons include several important company debuts for Spyres, with the Rossini Festival in Pesaro, London’s Royal Opera House and the Lyric Opera of Chicago all coming up. But while these may bring him fame and fortune, Spyres’s own sights are set on higher ideals: ‘I just want to keep becoming a better artist who reaches wider audiences, so that I can bring about change in a positive way,’ he explains. ‘I feel that it is our duty in this profession to bring about critical thinking and a higher level of consciousness, which ultimately results in a better future for all of humanity.’ Michael Spyres’s forthcoming appearances include Masaniello in Auber’s La Muette de Portici at the Opéra Comique, Paris (5 to 15 April) and Baldassare in a new production of Ciro in Babilonia at this year’s Rossini Opera Festival, Pesaro (10 to 22 August). His first solo album, A Fool For Love, is now also available on the Delos label (DE3414). Warum? Der sagt: „Was machst du? Tamino? OK! Wie schnell ist deine Arie? Aha! Was soll ich darüber denken?
