Top quality as the path to global branding
Cantina Terlano was founded exactly 120 years ago. Today its wines have an international following. One
explanation for this successful development is a strict focus on quality, which the South Tyrolean winery
sees as the path to global brand status on the wine market over the next few years. This is one of the
objectives formulated by the management in its Strategy 2020.
Chairman Georg Höller summarizes the history of the winery as follows: “After its foundation on 2 July 1893, the
winery was initially accommodated in a provisional building, and it was not until 1926 that a new facility was
constructed on the present site. In 2008 Cantina Terlano merged with Cantina Andriano, which was also founded
in 1893, and in June 2009 work was completed on extensions to the winery with the new Porphyry Cellar and
additional storage space.”
“The wines from Cantina Terlano store the specific character of the climate and the soil. The light, dry and sandy
soils explain the low yields, while the minerality of the quartz porphyry is reflected in the elegance and saltiness of
the wines,” says Sales Manager Klaus Gasser. The result, he adds, is wines with lots of fruit and character
combined with great concentration and longevity. Cantina Terlano has pursued a policy of low yields in
combination with the highest standards of quality for several decades already: “For a relatively small winery, that
is the only way to build up an international reputation.”
That is not the end of the journey for Terlano: “With the help of effective marketing and distribution, we hope to be
able to position our excellent wines as a global brand in the top wine segment by 2020.” Klaus Gasser points out
that the winery has already established itself as a leading producer of white wines in Italy and is now ready to
convince more distant markets of the quality of the Terlano wines: “In some countries, such as the United States,
we are already making good progress.”
As a winery in which innovation and tradition are so closely intertwined, Cantina Terlano is taking advantage of its
anniversary year to relaunch some old favorites – like its Terlaner Classico (Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay and
Sauvignon Blanc). This cuvée was one of Terlano’s original wines: “We have been selling it since 1893. To mark
its anniversary, the winery has given the leader of the Terlano vintage pack a new look. “That is an act of homage
to one of our most outstanding wines – now and in the past,” says Klaus Gasser.
