Italian wines
in a nutshell
T
hirty-one wineries and more than sixty
wines: Italian enology takes a bow in
London. Many Tre Bicchieri labels and
Special Quality/Price Award winners will be the
unchallenged stars of the show. Without wasting
time, let’s begin to make a virtual tour of the tasting
tables. To reset our palates, let’s talk about the
cutting acidity of Pinot Bianco Dellago ‘12 from
the Cantina Bolzano: fragrant, reactive, with a
citrusy and refreshing finish.
Have you ever heard of Semidano? A rare
Sardinian wine, at one time used as a white dessert
wine, but today vinified dry with good results.
Let’s taste the Semidano Sup. Puistèris ‘10 from
Cantina di Mogoro, a Mediterranean white in its
aromas, but with Nordic austerity, composed and
elegant. Sedimentary rocks of marl and sandstone
characterize part of the territory of Isonzo where
the Jermann winery bottles a classic of Italian
enology: Vintage Tunina. The 2011 is rich in aromas
and flavor, the result of a blend of sauvignon,
chardonnay, ribolla gialla, malvasia istriana and
picolit grapes. Then we come to Piedmont, moving
on to the Roero zone, and precisely to Canale where
we find the best crus of the denomination, such as
Roero Printi Riserva ‘10, bottled by the Monchiero
family, an intense Nebbiolo, fine, solid and almost
austere, dense and persistent in the mouth.
Next we go to Sulcis, with its very old alberellotrained vineyards. Sardus Pater brings us Carignano
Is Arenas ‘09 to taste: extremely drinkable, flavorful,
and constantly changing pace. Now it’s time for
Barolo, a wine that symbolizes the unity of Italy,
defined by the Savoy court as “the wine of kings,
the king of wines”. The vintage year 2009 bestowed
structure, character fullness and stream-lined
tannins on this wine. Barolo Brandini, among the
many in the tasting, has pleasant notes of medicinal
herbs and a well-balanced, harmonious palate.
A gala closing with Amarone, one from Allegrini,
the leading winery in the sector. L’Amarone della
Valpolicella Cl. ‘09 succeeds in the difficult task of
joining the richness of tradition with freshness and
taste integrity. Sweetness and integrity. Our tour is
over. It’s up to you to design your own.
Save the date: THURsday, February 27,
Ironmongers’ Hall.

ITALIAN-STYLE ON THE BANKS
OF THE THAMES
Ranging from Giorgio Locatelli’s table to the naturally leavened bread of Princi, here are five not-tomiss places for those who want to experience the Italian soul of London. Add in the British talent of
Jamie Oliver, who has always been a passionate promoter of the cucina of our country.
Fifteen
L’Anima
15 Westland Pl | London |

www.fifteen.net
1 Snowden St Broadgate West | London | tel. +44 20 7422 7000 | www.lanima.co.uk
This is the financial heart of the city, a few
meters from Liverpool Street, but L’Anima
is not your classic pretentious restaurant.
Francesco Mazzei, Calabrese in origin,
brings dishes inspired by southern Italian
recipes to your table. The ambience is elegant, but not too much so, the wine cellar
is well-supplied, with Tuscany to the fore.
At lunch and dinner, a prix fixe menu is
extremely affordable if you eat in the bar
area. Don’t miss the excellent cocktails.

A celebrity chef enamored of Italy, Jamie
Oliver’s most well-thought-of project is
Fifteen. The menu at Fifteen, a restaurant which was designed to train young
people who found themselves in difficult
situations, is based on a cucina that principally resembles Italian home cooking. The
menu is easy and delicious, offering simple
dishes and a few fusion recipes. The wines
are almost all Italian.
Arancina
9 Pembridge Road | Notting Hill | London |
tel. +44207 221 7776
A quick Sicilian-style snack in the heart
of Notting Hill. Everything in the place
reminds us of Italy, from the décor, to the
Cinquecento with the Rome license plate,
to the flavors we bring to our palate. The
arancino is not comparable to the best Sicilian version, but it’s tasty, as is the excellent margherita pizza served by the slice.

L’Anima
Locanda Locatelli
8 Seymour St. | London | tel. +44 20 7935 9088 |
www.locandalocatelli.com
Star chef Giorgio Locatelli’s Locanda is
an institution in the City, and has always
been one of the top standard bearers of
Italian cuisine in London. A modern ambiance and recognizable flavors that move
comfortably between tradition and modernity without extremes. A clear, surefooted cucina, attentive to ingredients, upmarket service and a much-awarded list of
wines, cocktails and spirits.
Locanda Locatelli
135 Wardour Street | London
tel. +44 20 7478 8880 | www.princi.com
From Milan to London, “in the name of
bread”. Organic wholegrain flours, stone
ground, for the naturally leavened breads
that are the heart of Princi, plus focaccia
and pizza, eggs offered in the morning,
vegetables and desserts, coffee and drinks,
wine and beer. The difference is the superb quality, the opening times, the beauty
of the ambiance built according to the dictates of a strong contemporary aesthetic.
Everything in pure Italian style.

Vini d’Italia Live in London
G
ambero Rosso, in collaboration with the Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the UK, comes
to London with a selection of the Italian wines that offer the best value for money. The Vini d’Italia Tour,
after three events in Scandinavia, will arrive in the British capital on Thursday, February 27. Where? In the
prestigious Ironmongers‘ Hall, headquarters of one of the historic Livery Companies of the City of London.
Aldersgate Street, its location, was once the site of a gate in the ancient London Wall. At 11, the opening
ceremony will be held with the representatives of the ICCIUK present. Gambero Rosso journalists will outline the
current state of health of Vineyard Italy. After a light lunch, at 14, a gala walkaround tasting will take place. Don’t
miss the two seminars led by Eleonora Guerini, the curator of the Vini d’Italia guide, at 14.15 p.m and at 16.30.
The Vini d’Italia Tour offers a unique opportunity to become familiar with Italy’s wine heritage, especially those
labels with an exceptional quality/price rapport. These wines have been the driving force of Italy’s enology and
made the country competitive around the world, assuring excellent global results. The Tour is an occasion to
sample the most recent vintages on the market and to hear the story behind each wine directly from its producer.
Remember that the only estates that can participate in this event are those which, thanks to the quality of their
production, have managed to be included in the Vini d’Italia annual guide edited by Gambero Rosso.
For over 20 years, with more than 25 annual events, Gambero Rosso has supported Italian wineries in their
effort to expand internationally. The foundation for this achievement is the immense work carried out in order to
publish the Vini d’Italia guide each year: 45,000 wines are tasted for each edition, 20,000 reviewed.
By creating a meeting place for supply and demand, with a strictly informational and educational profile, over
time Gambero Rosso has become an authentic world ambassador for quality Italian wine and is now a globally
recognized brand. Thanks to the success of these events and to increasing sales, in 2012 Italian wine exports
grew 7%, reaching the record of 4.7 billion euros. Estimates for 2013 predict 5 billion euros in sales.
Italian wine is gaining ground in Great Britain as well. According to data furnished by Coldiretti, in the first six
months of 2013, export of Italian wine to Great Britain grew by 8%, confirming it as the third most important
market for Italy’s production. After London, the Vini d’Italia tour will travel to Miami in May, winding up in style
in Tokyo in June. In London, along with previews of the newest vintages, the latest collections of Alessi products
will be on show. This Piedmontese company is one of the most celebrated on the world scene for its creation of
high design objects, many of them related to wine.
