AMCHAM How Can We Attract More US Investments? This was the question at the convention organized by AmCham in Milan, at which a new report on the topic was presented, including the issues which are ‘blocking’ foreign investors from choosing Italy he question: How can we attract more foreign investments? This was the central theme of the convention organized by AmCham (the American Chamber of Commerce in Italy), with the sponsorship of Coca Cola and Towers Watson, which took place in Milan at the Hotel Principe di Savoia this past May 20th. During the course of the convention, and after ten years, a new report on the state of American investments in Italy was presented. The report was developed by AmCham Italy’s Economic Affairs and FDI Committee presided over by Enrico Sassoon, in collaboration with Fabrizio Onida, professor emeritus of International Economics at Bocconi University. The report, based on the results of an investigation of American businesses which are members of AmCham Italy, stressed the challenging economic situation our country has been going through. Not only is Italy less attractive in terms of foreign investments as compared to the primary European economies, but it is also struggling more to return to pre-crisis levels of prosperity. An excessive tax burden, a decline in transportation infrastructure, inadequate economic incentives, and a labor market which needs improvement; these are just a few of the obstacles identified by the 2013 report which are hindering foreign investments in Italy. Annual foreign investments in Italy amount to 1.2% of the GNP, approximately $22 billion as opposed to $55 billion in France (equal to 2.9% of their GNP) and $90 billion in Great Britain (4.8% of their GNP); Spain follows with approximately $28 billion (2.7% of their GNP). The convention’s speakers were Simone Crolla, Managing Director of AmCham Italy; Kyle Scott, USA Consul General in Milan; Alessandro Castellano, CEO of SACE; Federico Eichberg, Italian help-desk coordinator at the Ministry for Economic Development; Pietro Guindani, from the Confindustria foreign investors Committee; Professor Fabrizio Onida; and Vittori Terzi, President of AmCham. As Simone Crolla stated, “this report, like the one from ten years ago, highlighting the importance of the United States’ relationship with our country, is intended as advice, straight from the mouths of American operators, on how our country must change in order to further strengthen this relationship and get back on track in terms of growth and employment. Today, like yesterday, AmCham has the passion, dedication, and skills necessary to be able to contribute to the evolution of this growth process, of which our two countries are greatly, and reciprocally, in need.” www.amcham.it T 70 èItalia Come attrarre più investimenti dagli USA?
