LE DUE RUOTE PAVARIN: UN GIOIELLO SU MISURA

Non c’è bisogno di indicazioni o insegne per trovare la loro bottega nel piccolo centro di Calcinate del Pesce: è sufficiente seguire il continuo andirivieni di
ciclisti con le loro fedeli biciclette. I Pavarin, il papà Achille e il figlio Roberto, li ricevono sulla soglia della loro storica bottega. Due belle vetrine non
sormontate da alcun marchio, decine e decine di bici e telai, una parete tappezzata di immagini e trofei che raccontano alcuni momenti di gloria sportiva
della famiglia, un laboratorio ben illuminato con tutti i ferri del mestiere. Una
piccola officina che è la conferma che, in provincia di Varese, l’artigianato di
qualità, cioè tanta professionalità mischiata a molta esperienza, può affrontare
la sfida del futuro senza paura. Dai primi anni Settanta ad oggi, infatti, la piccola azienda che confeziona bici da corsa su misura è riuscita a superare inimmaginabili trasformazioni tecnologiche e devastanti cambiamenti dell’economia, pur restando un sicuro punto di riferimento per gli amanti delle due ruote,
campioni o amatori che siano.
Semplice capire l’obiettivo dei Pavarin, come spiega Roberto. “La nostra attività, grazie alla forza del mestiere e ad un continuo aggiornamento, ha sempre
cercato di costruire qualcosa di bello e di funzionale a servizio dell’utente finale, l’atleta”. Un obiettivo che affonda le sue radici in un passato da meccanici
professionisti impegnati sui circuiti più prestigiosi, sotto le insegne delle grandi squadre, a fianco di campioni entrati nella leggenda, a bordo di veloci
“ammiraglie” al seguito.
Affascinante il percorso di papà Achille, “Maestro del lavoro”, 78 anni portati da giovanotto. Entrato, giovanissimo apprendista, nella mitica Ganna, iniziò a farsi le ossa e a conoscere il mondo del ciclismo. Poi, negli anni Sessanta,
l’approdo al team della Ignis, animato da un incontenibile ingegner Borghi che
spronava la sua squadra sporgendosi pericolosamente dall’ammiraglia. “Un

Achille - the father - and Roberto - his son, welcome them on
the threshold of their historical
workshop. There are two beautiful windows without brands,
dozens of bicycles and frames, a
floodlit lab with all the tools of
the trade and a wall covered with
pictures and sports trophies
which show some moments of
sportive glory of this family.
This workshop confirms the presence of a high quality handicraft
in the Province of Varese. This
handicraft means a lot of professionalism and experience, a combination which allows to face up
without fear to the future challenges. Since the Seventies this
small business, which produces
racing bicycles made to measure,
has been outliving the unthinkable technological changes and
the strong transformations of the
economy, proving to be a point of
reference for champions and for
all the people fond of bicycles.
It is easy to understand which is
Pavarins’ aim. As Roberto explains: “Thanks to the strength of
this trade and to a constant updating, our business has always
been trying to create something
which is beautiful and useful for
our final consumer, that is the
athlete”. This aim is connected
with his father’s experience, when
he worked as professional mechanic for the most prestigious courses.
In that period he worked for
important teams and alongside the
champions who entered into legend with their fast bicycles.
Roberto’s father, Achille, who has
been named “Maestro del Lavoro” is
seventy-eight years old, but he
seems to be a young man.
His experience is particularly
charming. He started working as
a young apprentice in the Ganna
team, where he began to gain
experience and to know the
world of cycling. Then, during
the Sixties, he decided to work
for the Ignis team, supported by
Borghi, an engineer who urged
his team lively.
Achille, whose experience includes fifteen Tours of Italy and
two other important tours, reminds
nostalgically Borghi: “He was a
great person. But I also remember
other great champions that I knew:
Fiorenzo Magni - the so-called
“Leone delle Friandre” - Antonio
Maspes (who was eight times
World Champion) and Ercole
Baldini (World Champion). They
were strong and generous men”.
Roberto, that is Achille’s son,
continues his family’s job. He is
forty-nine years old and has a
respected collection of medals.
For twelve years he worked as
mechanical responsible by the
Italian national cycling team. At
the beginning he worked by the
Juniores team, and then by the
amateurs’ team. Like his father,
grande personaggio - ricorda, con una punta di nostalgia, Achille, 15 Giri
d’Italia e due Tour alle spalle -, così come sono stati grandi campioni quelli che
ho conosciuto: il “Leone delle Fiandre” Fiorenzo Magni, Antonio Maspes (otto
volte Campione del mondo) ed Ercole Baldini (Campione del mondo). Uomini forti e generosi”.
A raccogliere il testimone dell’attività di famiglia è stato il figlio Roberto, 49
anni, anche lui con un medagliere di tutto rispetto:
lunga permanenza nella nazionale italiana di ciclismo che lo vede in prima linea
per ben 12 anni come responsabile meccanico, prima nella categoria Juniores, poi
in quella dilettanti. Assiste anche lui, come il padre, grandi atleti del calibro di
Gianni Bugno, Franco Ballerini, Mario Cipollini. “Sono un figlio d’arte e, sull’esempio di mio padre, anche la mia vita si è divisa tra attività sportiva e officina,
un doppio binario molto impegnativo”. Per quanto riguarda il lavoro, i Pavarin
hanno sempre offerto una grande esperienza maturata sul campo, con il gusto ed
il piacere, tipici dell’artigiano, di soddisfare pienamente il cliente.
Molti i cambiamenti con i quali hanno fatto i conti. Da quando hanno fatto
la loro comparsa sul mercato i telai realizzati in carbonio, l’azienda ha dovuto
rinunciare a costruirli direttamente. In base alle richieste dell’atleta, viene
disegnato il telaio, che viene costruito e verniciato all’esterno. Al suo ritorno
in officina, avviene l’assemblaggio finale, collocando sella, manubrio e attacco. “Oltre alla costruzione delle bici su misura, curiamo anche la loro manutenzione per clienti che ci frequentano da una vita”, tiene a sottolineare Roberto con legittimo orgoglio.
Nella bottega di Calcinate l’attività economica non è mai stata disgiunta dalla
passione. I Pavarin sono dei veri innamorati della due ruote, e per ricordarlo
hanno costituito il G.S. Cicli Pavarin, maglie gialle con fascia nera bordata di

bianco, rosso, nero, che ogni anno corre un raid (in programma, quest’anno,
quello “dei due mari dal Tirreno all’Adriatico”). Una passione che torna negli
occhi di Achille quando si parla dei Mondiali varesini di ciclismo: ricorda
quelli del ‘51, aveva 21 anni, lavorava alla Ganna. Ma non vede l’ora di assistere ai Mondiali 2008, nei quali il figlio è già stato “arruolato” come meccanico degli “under-23”. E così la dinasty continua.

o avuto il piacere di conoscere personalmente e stimare Pavarin: il frutto del
suo impegno non può che essere un prodotto ad alta qualità. Esattamente
quello che chiede il mercato, dove per emergere tra la concorrenza bisogna possedere dei plus che facciano la differenza.

As regards their work, the Pavarins have been always offering
a great experience. This experience has been reached in this real
field, with the typical craftsman’s
taste and pleasure to satisfy the
customer completely. They had
to face a lot of changes. When
the carbon frames appeared in
the market, Pavarins’ workshop
had to give up producing them
directly. The frame is designed
following the athlete’s requests.
Then, it is produced and painted
outside. When it returns in the
workshop, saddle, handlebar and
juncture are put together and the
final assemblage takes place.
With legitimate pride, Roberto
underlines that: “In addition to
the creation of bicycles made to
measure, we also take care of
their upkeep, especially for those
customers who have come to our
workshop for years”. In their
workshop, situated in the small
village of Calcinate, the economic part of the work has never
been separate from passion. The
Pavarins are really fond of bicycles. This is why they have decided to constitute the so-called
G.S. Cicli Pavarin. The athletes
of this team have yellow jerseys
with a black stripe and a white,
red and black edge. This association organizes a yearly race, that
this year will include a route from
Tyrrhenian to Adriatic roads”.
When someone speaks about the
World Cycling Championships of
Varese, it can be seen a great passion in Achille’s eyes: he remembers the World Cycling Championships which took place in
1951, when he was only twentyone years old and worked by
Ganna team. He is looking forward to see the next World
Cycling Championship, when his
son will work as mechanic for the
“under-23”. So, their dynasty
continues.
I
was pleased to know and esteem Pavarin: The results of his work represent
products of high quality. It is exactly what the market asks. If you want to distinguish yourself in a competitive market, you need to have a plus that makes the
difference.
