Among the local emergencies, the focus is on “Infant Trade”, “Schooling” and “Infanticide”. Natalie, CNA responsible, tells us the story together with other protagonists of the fight, each one with his own experiences: missionaries, NGO operators, doctors, formerMinisters and candidates to Benin Senate. The documentary has the positive and propositional tone of Benin children’s eyes. Pinuccio's life dream is to become a gravedigger in the Cemetery of Bitonto, his native town. Finally he gets to work in the nearby town cemetery, Mariotto, for a limited period of time. During the summer there are no funerals, no deaths, no burials, so while the people living in Mariotto are extremely happy about him, the local funeral industry on the contrary is against Pinuccio, even the flower vendor outside the cemetery. Pinuccio waits on the gate of "his" cemetery for his first burial. The temporary worker Pinuccio Lovero and all the people that participate actively to his life, offer the opportunity of a journey in the deep South of Italy, just a step away from its natural extintion. December 6th, 2007, at dawn. A fire breaks out at the line 5 of the ThyssenKrupp Acciai Speciali Terni plant in Turin. It's hell on earth: seven steelworkers out of eight will burn to death. One worker is killed during the blaze, while six other will die subsequently in hospital from serious burns. Paradoxically, the massive media coverage of the disaster gave the victims a privileged position in the tragic frame of the work related deaths... Rai reporter Lilli Gruber covers the second Iraq war live, from the period of waiting for the American attack to the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime, with previously unseen footage of civilian deaths, looting and the enthusiastic crowds that greeted the American when they entered Baghdad, but also the interrogation of young American soldiers in front of cameras of Al Jazeera, the bomb attacks at the Baghdad market, the deaths of two reporters caused by American forces firing on the Hotel Palestine and the destruction of the Museum of Archaeology in the Iraqi capital. The purpose of this trip is to inform the students about the largest and most brutal of all death camps where the Nazi tried to conclude the extermination of mainly the European Hebrews. The documentary AUSCHWITZ 2006 is the record of this journey through the past and the present. Throughout Italy the privatization of water supplies is raising utility bills and causing protests to break out. Citizens committees have been formed, and in some cases they are protesting by paying less than the rates charged. The special report takes a look at the privatization and distribution if the water we drink, as well as the ways in which this resource is wasted, plus the guarantees of its quality and purity. In 2007, for the first time in the history of humanity, the number of the earth's urban inhabitants exceeded its rural population. Megalopolis presents six documentaries that focus an equal number of sprawling cities - Los Angeles, San Paolo, Cairo, Shenzhen, Karachi and Tokyo examining both the visible and the invisible cities while taking an in-depth look, against the backdrop of day-to-day life, at the conflicts and passions of a futuristic scenario which has already come to pass. More than half a million Romanians, Italy’s largest community of foreign immigrants, serve as the babysitters, guardians of the elderly, temporary farm workers and construction labourers who keep the Italian economy going. But an increasing number also engage in violent crime. The murder of Gianna Reggiani set off a public uproar that had been building up for some time. TG2 Dossier examines the different aspects of what has become a full-fledged Romanian Syndrome in Italy. TG 2 Dossier visits the country’s prisons, the outskirts of its cities and the villages where so many gipsies hail from, looking for the reasons why the wave of Romanian immigration to Italy has brought with it so much crime and violence, along with hardworking people who want nothing more than to live among us in peace. Sudan has long been an impoverished giant asleep along the banks of the upper Nile. But the discovery of immense oil reserves beneath the desert has brought China to its aid, with a series of projects designed to jump-start development, including an enormous dam that will flood dozens of villages and archaeological sites. TG2 Dossier examines the dilemma of modern-day Africa, caught between the need for growth and the risk of losing its cultural traditions and damaging the environment. The Italy easy money, women and luxury cars, the paradise that encourages so many immigrants to go to desperate lengths to arrive here, is put in perspective by those same immigrants, who, having spent their time in the country, tell of what Italy and the Italians are really like. Their tragicomic tales paint Italians as people that can be kind and understanding or aggressive and irrational, with the one constant being the fact that, when they consider their foreign guests, they feel unquestionably superior. Turkish writer Nedim Gursel presents Istanbul, a modern, virtually western metropolis whose future holds the promise of strong economic and demographic growth. A hub of migration, Istanbul serves as both a metaphorical and physical bridge between Europe and Asia, linking a variety of different cultures and ways of life. The documentary ponders what will happen when predominantly muslim Turkey enters the catholic European Union and how the country’s ties with the Middle East will change. A voyage in the banlieus. Writer Predrag Matvejevic takes us on a secular pilgrimage through his brutally divided land. He offers his childhood recollections of the old Mostar bridge, destroyed and then reconstructed, visits Sarajevo, the city hardest hit in the last war, and reaches Zagreb, the Croatian city he was forced to leave after receiving ugly threats. In the “Age of Afterwards”, everything has already happened, and the new world that should come forth from the ruins is still nothing more than a ìformer placeî. Moroccan writer Tahar Ben Jelloun, a former immigrant himself, guides us along the routes and sentiments followed by the thousands of North Africans who leave their cities and villages every year and head for Europe. Starting from their hometowns, he describes their living conditions, dreams and expectations, together with the distinctive features of their identities, their religion and culture, providing an in-depth portrait of the world they will leave either temporarily or forever. Disguised as a science-fiction novel whose realism borders on the fantastical, this documentary tells the story of a fight against illness, ageing and death, carried out without any regard for the attendant danger or current morals. The construction of a superior civilization by any possible means makes the dream of immortality appear to be an increasingly real and reachable goal. Home to 1 billion, 100 million inhabitants, 300 million of them below the poverty line, India's GNP grows at a rate of 6%, second only to China, thanks in large part to its surprising number of university graduates in scientific disciplines. But Indian technology exists alongside a system of deeprooted cast discrimination that sparks violence and social conflict. Seven-time world champion motorcycle racer Valentino Rossi admits that he is unable to stay still, though his dream for later on in life is to “Stay home and cut the grass”. Friends and admirers take turns describing him, including two writers and a famous comic-strip author who uses Valentino as one of his heroes. Valentino’s father says he might wind up racing on four wheels, with Ferrari on the Grand Prix circuit, but only if he feels he can keep winning the way he now does on two. "Once upon the time, people were scared only to utter that awesome word : MAFIA. Nowadays, we teach our own children to call it by its name". The woman speaking is Rita Borsellino. She's addressing an audience of children at the Rivoli elementary school, near Turin. The sister of the judge killed 12 years ago, on July 19th 1992, during the bloody terroristic attack of Via D'Amelio in Palermo, answers the children's direct questions and leads her young audience back into the memories of those days. “Mafia, more than just a word” is a survey-trip carried out by Roberto Olla for the weekly magazine SPECIALE TG1. For most of us, Malaysia is a fantastical land of pirates, tiger hunts and precious pearls, but, apart from its unspoiled beaches and untamed forests, what is the country really like? A world leader in the export of semiconductors and electronic components: that is one way to describe today's Malaysia, thanks to the dramatic changes brought about in the space of a single generation by leader Mahatir Mohammad, who has transformed a primarily agricultural nation into an economic power able to compete with the other "Asian Tigers". The red dragon is threatening the Italian textile sector. China is an immense market with some peculiarities that make it a difficult competitor. What some see as a business opportunity, others perceive as a threat. What is certain is that the volume of Chinese production has the power to destabilize the markets that it enters. Who is loosing and who is winning in the global economy? From a small factory in Northern Italy to the incredible performances of the Zhejiang factory, all the success and defeats, the new rich and the new poor, commercial challenge and the everyday life of the workers and businessmen in both countries. Aidana is four years old. She was born with two heads, and not for a wicked hoax of destiny, but because she was born in the most radioactive spot of the planet: Semipalatinsk, in Kazakhstan. For fifty years, until 1991, this area was the main atomic site of the Soviet Union and one of the gloomiest chapters in the whole history of the Cold War. All nuclear and thermonuclear bombs launched in this little Asian region were by 2.800 times more powerful than those of Hiroshima. Epidemiological data are nevertheless undeniable: 70.000 people died and more than 300.000 are sick as a consequence of radiations. This Special follows several other TV reports shot in Iraq by TG 1 special envoys. "War journals from Erbil to Baghdad" is the story of the war on the Northern Iraqi front, with lots of witnesses and dramatic pictures shot following the moves of the Peshmerga, the Curd guerrillas, while they try to get near to the big oil towns of Mosul and Kirkuk. This journal covers two months of battles between the Curds and the lraqis, before the AmerÌcan Ìnvolvement; in the meantime, a long series of scaring events and tragic mistakes take place. In fact, the TG1 crew was involved in a battle right on the first fine and, on April 6, an American plane opened fire on a convoy loaded with Peshmerga and journalists. Blue Highways is a four documentary film series based on the same title novel by the American Indian writer William Least Heat-Moon. Blue Highways is a road trip through the American province along its back roads, which were marked with the colour blue on the old highway maps from the 50's. To say it with Heat-Moon's words, this is a "space where man can get lost". Today, driving along the old back roads it's possible to reach America's true heart. Blue Highways is the expression of a profound relationship between man and landscape, resembling a eulogy of slowness in the frantic era of globalization. But the dream of the West turns into a nightmare. "No risk! No champagne!" follows some women on their travels and others on their return home marked by their terrible experiences. Their touching stories reveal something significant about the West, where civil rights were born on the value of the individual as a unique person but where now Trade is the idol. All charges against Onel de Guzman have been dismissed: the 24-year-old college dropout accused of being responsible for a destructive computer e-mail program that wrought billions of dollars in damage worldwide named "I LOVE YOU".
