THE 23RD “CITTÀ DI ABANO” FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT BECOMES A WORLDWIDE
EVENT
The 23rd “Città di Abano” International Youth Football Tournament will take place from 30th
April to 4th May
Just a few statistics about the 23rd edition of “Città di Abano” International Youth Football
Trophy: sixteen teams, five football fields, five days, four hundred players, more than one
thousand people involved. Not only is the tournament a recurrent event in the spring season
in the thermal area, but it is also the most important sport event in the Euganean district:
Abano Terme township and Consorzio Terme Euganee will actually co-operate to organise this
international tournament, which involves teams from every corner of Europe and also other
continents, making it a worldwide event.
The tournament aims at the U13 category and is starting on Wednesday 30th April; the final
matches and the award ceremonies will be on the last day, Sunday 4th May. The formula is
the same of last year’s edition, with sixteen teams divided into four rounds of four teams each
during the eliminating phase. Eight teams are from Italy, while the other eight come from
eight different countries, highlighting the international vocation of the event. Among the
sixteen teams, fourteen are professional football clubs, while the other two are local amateur
teams Abano and Thermal Abano.
“The teams we will have in this edition are Benfica from Portugal (the 2013 tournament
winners), Ajax from the Netherlands, Atletico Madrid from Spain, Bruges from Belgium, Bayer
Leverkusen from Germany (who won the 2012 edition), Danish team Midtjylland, CSKA
Moscow from Russia. The Italian teams are Juventus, Fiorentina, Inter, Milan, Atalanta and
Padova, in addition to local teams Abano and Thermal Abano” Abano sport councillor Angelo
Montrone says. “This year we also have a surprise that makes our tournament a worldwide
event: American team Chicago Fire will be one of the participants, giving visibility to the
tournament in other continents, too.”
The matches will be held on five fields of the thermal area, that is Stadio delle Terme,
Monterosso, San Giuseppe and Giarre in Abano, as well as Torreglia stadium.
“This is an important opportunity to give visibility to our territory, since all teams will be
hosted in 12 3- and 4-stars hotels in Abano and Montegrotto” Consorzio Terme Euganee
President Angela Stoppato says. “The Euganean Thermal Baths are the ideal location for this
event, not only for the traditional link with it, but especially because the territory has been
promoting a healthy lifestyle for centuries. It is also considered the ideal location to make
sport the final step in a programme improving one’s state of health through thermal
treatments, all in the biggest thermal resort in Europe.”
The inaugural ceremony will start at 18.00 on 30th April with the teams parade in Abano
Terme town centre; this will be followed by the first match at Stadio delle Terme in Abano at
19.30. The next day the heat phase will follow. Saturday 3rd May quarterfinals, semifinals and
finals for 9th to 16th place will be held, while those from 3rd to 8th place will be on Sunday 4th
May in the morning, as well as the match at Stadio delle Terme that will decide the winner of
the 23rd Città di Abano Terme International Youth Football Tournament.
