QUALITY
Per il cricket italiano, il 2001 è stato un anno di difficoltà nei rapporti con l’International Cricket
Council a proposito delle norme sulla cittadinanza dei nostri connazionali residenti all’estero.
Sono problemi di cui ho avuto ampio modo di occuparmi come diplomatico, da ultimo come
Segretario Generale della Farnesina. Mi pare tra l’altro appropriato e conseguente che il gesto
coraggioso e significativo della Federazione di ritirare la Nazionale dall’ICC Trophy svoltosi lo
scorso luglio a Toronto abbia coinciso con la tanto agognata approvazione della legge che attribuisce il voto a tutti i membri dell’AIRE (Associazione Italiana Residenti all’Estero).
Fermo restando il nostro assoluto rispetto per culture e tradizioni sportive diverse dalla nostra,
non è possibile per l’Italia e per il cricket italiano accettare di far parte di un Consesso che non
accetta il nostro Paese per quello che è, con le norme che democraticamente si è dato sulla cittadinanza.
Ho tuttavia la viva speranza che quanto avvenuto costituisca un punto spiacevole di passaggio,
peraltro necessario, per trasformare con suo vantaggio il cricket da sport prettamente anglosassone in un gioco internazionale nel senso proprio del termine: questo è un obiettivo cui possiamo
contribuire

abroad.
This is an issue to which I dedicated a lot of time in my days as a diplomat, ultimately as
Secretary General of the Italian Foreign Ministry. In this respect, I found it in some ways appropriate and consequential that the Federazione’s strong and brave gesture of withdrawing from the
ICC Trophy that took place in Toronto last July should coincide with the much belated approval
of the law that gives Italian citizens abroad full voting rights.
Notwithstanding Italy’s total respect for cultures and traditions that differ from ours, it would not
be possible for Italy and for Italian cricket to be part of an organization that does not accept Italy
for what it is, inclusive of the laws it has democratically given itself on citizenship.
However, I very much hope that what happened last year should constitute a painful but necessary stepping stone on the route of transforming cricket, for its own good, from a purely
anglosaxon game into a truly international sport: this is an objective to which Italy can greatly
contribute.

QUESTO GENERE NON SI RIPETANO IN FUTURO.

na revisione delle regole d’eleggibilità
da tempo programmata ha avuto inizio dopo la fine dell’ICC Trophy. Essa
ha comportato una estesa ricerca in campo
legale prendendo in esame le regole d’eleggibilità usate da altri sport e considerandole come
punto di riferimento.
In aggiunta, le risposte ad un questionario
inviato a tutti i membri dell’ICC hanno
fornito una parte delle informazioni utilizzate dal Comitato
per la Revisione delle
Regole d’Eleggibilità
riunitosi per progettare i nuovi regolamenti.
La proposta che sarà
esaminata dall’Assemblea Plenaria del prossimo giugno verte sul principio che ogni cittadino ha diritto di giocare per il proprio paese a
prescindere dal modo in cui ha conseguito la
nazionalità.
Le stesse regole varranno per tutte le categorie di membri anche se i giocatori che desidereranno giocare per membri Associati ed

“parametri di sviluppo” proposti affinché un giocatore
possa dimostrare di essere

agli Europei B di Corfù è stato estremamente positivo. La squadra è giunta seconda alle spalle di una Francia forte di due fuoriclasse ma anche di due giocatori “in deroga”
capaci di fare la differenza. Memorabili il 79 not
out di Yohan Kariyawasan, premiato come
miglior battitore del torneo, contro la Germania
ed il maiden over di chiusura di Luca Moretti
che ha rovesciato l’inerzia della partita con
Gibilterra.
Meno buona è stata la performance dell’under
19 nell’equivalente torneo svoltosi ad
Edinburgo. Partita con il piede sbagliato - una
prova disastrosa contro la Germania - la squadra, trascinata da Scarponi miglior giocatore del
torneo, ha vinto, senza mai convincere, le due
partite contro Gibilterra, perdendo di un soffio
la rivincita con i tedeschi.
L’under 15, il cui torneo si è svolto sui bellissimi
campi di Berlino, rappresentava una incognita
totale visto che i giocatori avevano pochissima
esperienza alle spalle. Questo emergeva nell’incontro d’esordio con l’Austria, nazione decisamente più preparata nel settore giovanile.

on the 10th anniversary of his death, on October
7th 2001, the ground in Via Cimabue, built with
enlightened vision by the Grosseto City Council to
help the growth of a sport not yet fully on its feet
in Italy, was named in his memory in a touching
albeit simple ceremony.
With all this in mind, it was even more pleasing to
witness the best “final four” ever played with one
match, the semifinal between Lazio and Bologna,

l 7 ottobre 1991, a soli 35 anni, moriva
Massimo Falsetti, (nella foto in alto a
destra) solo un nome per molti che oggi giocano a cricket, ma molto di più per altri che come
lui in quell’epoca pionieristica predicavano il gioco
con tanto entusiasmo ed un pizzico d’incoscienza.
A dieci anni esatti di distanza, il 7 ottobre 2001, il
campo di Via Cimabue, costruito con lungimiranza
dal Comune di Grosseto per diffondere uno sport
ancora non del tutto consolidato
nel nostro paese, veniva a lui intitolato con una cerimonia tanto
semplice quanto toccante.
In considerazione di ciò, ha fatto
ancora più piacere che il concentramento finale sia stato il più
bello mai giocato con una partita,
la semifinale fra Lazio e Bologna
sospesa per l’oscurità e poi vinta
dai capitolini all’ultima palla.
D’altronde, anche nei turni preliminari si erano
registrati scontri emozionanti come la vittoria del
Bologna sul Brera per soli 6 punti o quella del
Capannelle sulla Roma per 2 wickets.
Il Pianoro ha vinto senza troppa difficoltà sia la
semifinale contro il Capannelle che la finale contro
la Lazio, seconda come nel 2000, ma sia le due
squadre romane che il Bologna hanno giocato dell’ottimo cricket a conferma della grande crescita
tecnica della base del movimento.

in Italia via internet nella primavera del 2000,
Alex è subito divenuto nelle fila della Lazio una
delle star della EIS Cup, risultando per due
anni consecutivi il più prolifico battitore italiano. Una tecnica da manuale, coniugata con una
profonda cultura del gioco, ne fanno un investimento a lungo termine che permette al cricket
italiano di guardare con fiducia al futuro.
