Orgelstadt Innsbruck City of organs · Città degli organi Programm · Program · Programma 2016 Vorwort Liebe KulturfreundInnen! Dear Culture Lovers! In the minds of many, the organ stakes a justified claim to the title ‘Queen of Instruments’. Tirol’s state capital is home to a wide array of particularly valuable exponents and knows well what treasures they are. For that reason, the Cultural Office of the city government makes every effort to provide this instrument, which the general public too often sees purely as an instrument of music accompaniment, with a proper and dignified framework through a wide-ranging programme. The links between the City of Innsbruck and the world of organs are multi-faceted: this year, the renowned international Paul-Hofhaimer Competition will again be held here, at which young organists are given the opportunity to present themselves to a wider public as worthy of historical organ music. It is a highly regarded competition and regularly hosts a most competent field of participants. Beyond that, Innsbruck also furthers a dynamic exchange inside the organ community known as ECHO (European Cities of Historical Organs) in the process of which European cities make diverse contributions to the far-reaching “organ network”. For the instruments themselves, the state capital has launched a number of activities in recent years. This year, the Cultural Office has extended its organisational reach beyond the city limits, presenting for the first time a series of concerts played on three organs at the Abbey Basilica of Stams. This brief sketch shows that the organ gems of Innsbruck do not play a subordinate role in city life, on the contrary they are played (and are prized) deep in its heart. I am pleased to be able to present a sophisticated programme of music for 2016. September 2016 Sigmund’s successor Emperor Maximilian the First inherited and retained Hofhaimer together with the court musicians. During the course of his career Hofhaimer journeyed throughout the empire, e.g. to Linz, Vienna, Augsburg, Ulm, Constance and Freiburg. Following the death of his employer and patron in the year 1519, the imperial ensemble of musicians was disbanded. It is thought that Hofhaimer then went to Passau. He was verifiably in Salzburg in 1522, and died there in 1537. He is buried in the cemetery at St. Peter’s in Salzburg. Recatosi da principio presumibilmente a Passau, nel 1522 ne fu menzionata la presenza a Salisburgo, dove morì nel 1537 e fu seppellito nel cimitero di Sankt Peter. o 18 th Paul-Hofhaimer-Prize Organ Competition of the state capital of Innsbruck On the occasion in 1969 of the 450th anniversary of the death of Emperor Maximilian the First, the state capital of Innsbruck created the “Paul Hofhaimer Prize” for outstanding interpretation of organ compositions by early composers of organ music. The activities and achievements of Paul Hofhaimer, born in Radstadt on 25 January 1459, were closely bound up with life at the imperial court of Maximilian the First. Hofhaimer first served at the court of Friedrich III in Graz before launching his career as organist in the employment of Archduke Sigmund of Tirol in 1478. 4 Der international ausgeschriebene Orgelwettbewerb findet alle 3 Jahre in Innsbruck statt und wird seit 2007 von der Musikschule der Stadt Innsbruck organisiert. ... The open international competition for organ interpretation takes place every three years in Innsbruck. It has been organised by the Music School of the City of Innsbruck since 2007. The competition is conducted for the general public in various churches where participants play renowned historic organs. The jury evaluates the interpretations and selects the prize winners from among the participants at the finals. Prize winners play in a festive concert as the high point of the competition, at the end of which the prizes are awarded. The performances for the competition are open to the general public free of charge. ... Hanging in the cathedral since 1650, the famous “Mariahilf” painting depicting Madonna and Child by LukasCranach the Elder came into the possession of the state of Tyrol when it was given as a gift by George I, Elector of Saxony, to the future ruler of Tyrol Archduke Leopold V and for which a ceremonial celebration has been held every year since 1750 on the first sunday in July. In 1964 Innsbruck became seat of the diocese and thus the parish church was elevated to cathedral status. ... Cathedral of St. James The construction of what was originally a Gothicchurch probably dates back to the 12th century when the city of Innsbruck was founded. A severe earthquake in 1689 made it necessary for the church to be completely rebuilt. The cathedral was given its current Baroque appearance between 1717 and 1724 by the architect Johann Jakob Herkomer and was completed by Johann Georg Fischer. Patron saint of the church is St. James the Elder whose legend was immortalised in the cathedral by the artist Cosmas Damian Asam in 1723 in 6 7 Dom St. Jakob Die Orgel, 1725/2000 Konzerte / Concerts / Concerti Tausch. The benefactor’s coat of arms can still be seen today as a crest on the centre section of the organ. A new, fully-mechanical organ was installed inside the case in 2000 by the company Pirchner from Steinach am Brenner. ... The Peace Carillon in the Cathedral of St. James It was in 1947 that the idea was first born of constructing a carillon as a memorial to peace in the provincial capital of Innsbruck. In order to achieve this goal 800,000 Austrian Schillings in donations were subsequently collected. The carillon’s 35 bells were cast in the Netherlands by the company Eijsbouts. However, owing to the poor economic conditions at the time, the endeavour to complete the project went on for many years until finally, in 1975, Innsbruck City Council settled the outstanding costs. On the occasion of the 9th Winter Olympics the carillon was inaugurated at Weiherburg Castle in the city’s peaceful “Sophienruhe” area. It became evident, however, that this site was too remote and so the carillon was relocated to the north tower of the Cathedral of St. James (Dom zu St. Jakob) where it was installed by the Innsbruckbased bell and art foundry Grassmayr. This location in the heart of the city’s pedestrian zone offers highest quality renditions and optimum accessibility. Furthermore, the carillon was extended in size to 48 bells, thus allowing it to 10 Dom St. Jakob il Comune di Innsbruck si assunse i costi rimanenti. The carillon – that is the name given to a chime instrument that has at least 23 bronze bells and that possesses a pitch range of at least two octaves – is the first one of its kind in Austria with a pitch range of four octaves. It weighs over 4,000 kilos and the heaviest bell weighs 650 kilos. The carillon is arranged on a custom-made hanging construction and can by played mechanically by means of a handand-foot controlled keyboard. ... Alongside major reforms, Emperor Maximilian I also left behind prestigious buildings that serve as a reminder of his person and, above all, of his power. During his lifetime he commissioned plans for his own monumental sepulchre complete with an impressive (partly fictitious) ancestral gallery in the form of 40 larger-then-life bronze figures. In the course of a journey in 1519, however, the Emperor died in the castle of Wels before his plans were realised, and he was buried in Wiener Neustadt, the town of his birth. His grandson Emperor Ferdinand I, nonetheless, had the Hofkirche church built in Innsbruck between 1553 and 1563, and in 1584, under the auspices of Archduke Ferdinand II, the tomb was finally completed in the church surrounded by 28 bronze figures. In addition to the empty grave, the Hofkirche is also the burial place of the renowned Tyrolean freedom fighter Andreas Hofer and, in the Silver Chapel, it contains the tombs of Archduke Ferdinand II and his wife Philippine Welser. The Ebert Organ, 1558 The Hofkirche in Innsbruck is home not only to Emperor Maximilian I’s extraordinary tomb, but also to Austria’s oldest organ. Commissioned by King Ferdinand I, the organ was built by organ master Jörg Ebert from Ravensburg. Although it was completed for the most part five years before the church’s dedication in 1558, it was not used in the Hofkirche until 1561. The organ’s intricate case is made of stone pine, and Great and Rückpositiv can be closed by means of leaf doors. The function of the leaf doors was, on the one hand, to protect the organ’s interior from dirt and insects and, on the other, the doors also had a liturgical function until the mid-17th century. During the Advent season and Lent, the leaf doors remained closed, even when the organ was being played. Hence the organ was quieter which served to enjoin the congregation to prayer. In keeping with this function, the biblical scene of the adoration of Jesus in the manger by the shepherds was displayed on the large, closed doors. In contrast, the opened leaf doors depict the annunciation of the Archangel Gabriel to Mary and, on the lower doors, there was, originally, a picture of the resurrection and ascension. It is thought that these were replaced by the biblical scene of the flight into Egypt during the course of restoration work. ... The Silver Chapel Connected to the Court Church (Hofkirche), the Silver Chapel is situated above what today is the passage route to the former city moat. Created as a funerary chapel for Archduke Ferdinand II and his wife Philippine Welser, the chapel was built in two construction phases between 1578 and 1596. Its name derives from the silver reliefs on its Lady Altar. The chapel comprises two adjacent, rectangular crypt chapels. Situated in the anterior alcove, which was originally planned for the tomb of Ferdinand’s second wife Anna Katharina Gonzaga, is the wooden-piped Italian Late Renaissance organ which dates back to 1585. In 1944, following the bomb war, the organ was in a desolate, unplayable condition. The Vorarlberg-based cabinet maker Hubert Neumann was charged with restoring the instrument. He reassembled the damaged pieces; irreparable parts were reconstructed as faithfully as possible to the original. This, however, involved accepting some deviations with regard to the materials used. Cypress wood, for example, was not available and several of the pipes were replaced using larch. Of particular significance is the Late Gothic crucifix with real hair (around 1510) which hangs on a side altar. Previously situated in the centre of the nave, it remained virtually unscathed during the bombing of Innsbruck in 1943/44. The rest of the church was severely damaged and reconstructed after the war. The church underwent its last extensive renovation between 2005 and 2008 when it also received two new organs. ... ... The Festival Organ, 2008 Built in 2008, the form concept of the case of the festival organ built by Verschueren Orgelbouw from Heythuysen in the Netherlands takes its inspiration from elements of the Baroque church’s interior. The organ builders have striven to create a visual harmony between the west gallery and the 19 metre-high main altar. The 53 speaking stops are distributed over four divisions: the Oberwerk, the Great, the Rückpositiv and the Pedals. In collaboration with Verschueren Orgelbouw a standardised instrument was installed modelled after the great Dutch organs of the Baroque period which inherently offer a wide variety of possibilities for performing traditional European organ literature. Traditional materials and skilled, artistic craftsmanship, without the use of modern playing aids, form the basis for this. Die Herz-Orgel, um 1670 The Reil Organ, 2008 Stylistically suited to the choir stalls which date back to 1791, the company Orgelmakerij Reil from Heerde in the Netherlands, in 2008, built a chair organ with 14 stops. It is situated at the south pilaster between the high altar and the choir stalls. The organ’s main case has been kept as flat as possible, the trackers leading to the Rückpositiv are hidden in the floor and both the single-fold diagonal bellows are assembled one on top of the other in the cupboards in the corridor behind the choir stalls. The simple case is made of nut wood treated only with beeswax. The lime wood embellishments were carved by Marius van Wijk and gilded by Mario Wehinger. ... ... The Herz Organ, around 1670 Due to fortunate circumstances the choir organ built by Daniel Herz (1618–1678) has remained intact until today and, what is more, it is almost entirely in its original state. Due to its largely original condition and Daniel Herz’s uniquely outstanding organ-building skills, this instrument ranks among the most valuable and oldest organs in the Tyrol. The choir organ is highly intricate as far as its craftsmanship is concerned with 9 manual stops and one pedal stop. Groups of 3 stops are fed by one common rank of pipes by means of special airways. The compass, pitch and the special tuning are in keeping with what was customary in the 17th century and the instrument is a wonderful example of a Ripieno organ, with sound characteristics typical of the old Italian style, that rarely exists north of the Alps. 25 Stiftskirche Wilten Basilika Wilten Konzerte / Concerts / Concerti Basilika Wilten Konzerte und Pontifikalamt Concerts and Pontifical High Mass · Concerti e messa pontificale Eintritt: freiwillige Spenden erbeten / Admission: contributions welcome / Entrata: offerta libera Die Vorgeschichte der Kirche reicht weit zurück bis ins 4. The Augsburg-based painter Matthäus Günther created the stunning ceiling frescoes which depict scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary in what is undoubtedly the Tyrol’s most beautiful Rococo church. Centrepiece of the parish and pilgrimage church is the miraculous depiction on the high altar, a statue of the Madonna with Child, dating back to the first half of the 14th century. Wilten is Innsbruck’s oldest parish. In 1957 it was granted the title “Basilica minor” by the Pope, a title that emphasises the church’s special significance here in the region. ... Wilten Basilica Wall fragments of a Roman building provide evidence that the history of this church stretches way back into the 4th century AD. The church is situated on the grounds of the Roman military camp “Veldidena”. According to the legend of its foundation, Roman legionnaires worshipped a painting of the Virgin Mary here under the shade of four trees. From the 12th century onwards, the church was ministered by the religious order of the Premonstratensians. It was not, however, until 1259 that the church’s name - “Unsere Hohe Frau” (Our Beloved Lady) – was first documented. At that time, it was already a place of pilgrimage. The organ was refurbished in 2003 in the course of which its original sound of 1894 was restored. The tone of this instrument now reflects the romantic tradition of the era in which it was built and opens up a world of sound that is virtually unknown today. ... Chapel of St. George – Old Assembly Building The chapel was built in 1730 in honour of the patron saint of Tyrol, Saint George. Part of the case is from a historical organ from the village of Kirchberg in Tirol that became redundant after a new organ was built. A historicised construction technique was adopted for the organ in the Chapel of St. George. Testimony to this is the air supply with two diagonal bellows along with hand-made nails and screws, plugged windchests and the console. The organ, as a whole, is constructed in keeping with instrument building as it was practiced around 1725 in the southern German region. ... Its ornamentation was crafted by Rococo artist Johann Reindl of Stams, who also painted in the same style the accoutrements of the Abbey’s Baroque pharmacy. Painted onto the noteboard is the frontispiece and a few other pages of the organ part for Missa in honorem St. Thomae Aquinatis by Jan Zach, who at the time resided at the Abbey as composer. The organ was originally attached to the selfsame bellows system as the main organ. In the wake of alterations performed by Franz Weber in the 19th century, it was shut down by Alois Fuetsch in 1931 when the main organ was rebuilt. Subsequently during the war years and the period following it was vandalised and completely ruined. In 2015, master organ builders at Linder Co. were able to reconstruct and restore it to the original condition and artistic form of 1771.
