Cleto Sagripanti, President of Assocalzaturifici Lights and shadows of a lively sector Cleto Sagripanti, President of Assocalzaturifici talks to us in an interview about some matters that are particularly important for the footwear sector. What is the health condition of the Italian footwear sector? “The pre-final balance figures – says the President of Assocalzaturifici, Cleto Sagripanti – unfortunately confirm what we had announced in December: the production has gone back under the critical threshold of 200 million pairs, even slightly below the level of 2009. In this respect, we can talk about a triple-dip, after the negative peak in 2012. Yet this is not the most negative figure to worry us: the truth is that today this triple-dip might turn into the beginning of a new unfavourable period, should some negative shocks materialise with a blow. We can do nothing but watch what is happening in Ukraine with apprehension, because in case of war the economic scenario could only get worse”. “Our companies have done the umpteenth miracle because, in the face of external shocks, they have managed not only to contain the damage on the foreign markets, but also to reach a new sales record in terms of value. Nevertheless the worries remain, because this decade of recession on the internal market and crisis in so- me market areas cannot yet be compensated by export and this explains, in short, the negative circumstances”. “The exploit of China and the upswing of the United States as an interesting market for Italian footwear proves how the Association has fostered, reinforced and accompanied these phenomena. In times like these, it’s an important signal from our companies to see they are grabbing their suitcases, full of samples, ready to go and search for unexplored markets or markets that had got lost along the way because of the international crisis. We have to give credit for playing on both sides - the new markets and the mature ones with the same determination. For this reason today theMICAM represents a bet we have won and the main door to access these markets, both with the Italian fair and with the events we are carrying out in the two markets”. Vice Minister Calenda has presented a project to valorise Made in Italy and fair events around the world. What do you think about it? “The project for the promotion of Made in Italy, presented by the vice minister for Economic Development Carlo Calenda, makes us totally satisfied, espe- cially as far as the valorisation of fair events is concerned, as they are truely showcases of Italian excellence in the world. Target countries of these important investments are Japan, the United States and China; the latter seeing us involved with theMICAMshanghai. For the next edition, from 18th to 20th March, the clothing and footwear system will appear compact for the first time. Assocalzaturifici, Fiera Milano and its China-based company HMFS – Hannover Milano Fair Shanghai, SMI – Sistema Moda Italia and EMI – Ente Moda Italia, in cooperation with ICE – Agency for the promotion abroad and the internationalisation of Italian companies – are joining their efforts. I agree with the Vice Minister on underlining the necessity of creating a system to reinforce the investments for Italian fashion overseas, something that Assocalzaturifici has been carrying out for footwear fashion for many years with a calendar full of fair appointments all over the world. The relaunch of the investments will also concern the event To be continued at Pag. 8 > MICAM_02_02:MICAM TODAY Layout 4_13 15/02/15 12:38 Pagina 5 Pad. 3 · Stand L 21-25 · M 16-20 MICAM_02_02:MICAM TODAY Layout 4_13 15/02/15 12:39 Pagina 6 6 Lunedì 16 Febbraio 2015 2 collegamento con centro città RADIOTAXI Radiotaxi / Funktaxi/ Radiotaxis MILANO - Tel. < From pag.4 Interview with Giuliano Pisapia, Mayor of Milan City and Fashion: a very important “marriage” Giuliano Pisapia is the Mayor of Milan. It is he who plays host to the thousands of people coming to Milan for this theMICAM. We asked him a few questions. Milan's fashion shows and trade fairs have made the city a world capital of fashion. The city of Milan is once again a world landmark in fashion. The city proudly views its fashion shows and trade fairs as a celebration of its talents. These events are a constant source of creativity, giving new impetus to the city and the country as a whole. What benefits can this role offer the community in the city of Milan? Is is possible to bring the city closer to the trade fair events taking place at Fiera Milano Rho? The city is already very close to the events held at the Rho Pero trade fair centre. This is evident in all the related events held by various different organisations in Milan, some independently of the city government and others in partnership with it. We have planned a whole season of events in which everyone in the fashion sector will work in partnership with public institutions. Response has been very positive. theMICAM is the world's most important trade fair for the footwear industry. How does the city of Milan feel about the event? The city approaches the event in the spirit that one might expect of a city that is facing a lot of different challenges with great courage and determination. There are many difficulties involved, but there are also a number of lights on the horizon that make us optimistic. At this time of economic crisis, I know that the footwear industry has seen some ups and downs, but if institutions, enterprises and craftspeople join forces, it is easy for them to achieve good results that will last over the years. We need everyone's commitment to relaunch the country. How important is hosting some of the world's top trade fairs for the city of Milan? Don't you think greater coordination of the various events on Milan's fashion calender would boost the city's economy, as well as the accounts of the enterprises involved, at such a difficult moment for the economy when it is important to work together? I completely agree, and this is what we are doing. As I said, we have recently seen the start of a new era of successful partnerships between the public and private sectors, between institutions and the world of fashion. More and more events are organised that are open to the general public during various trade fairs in the city. We only need to continue in this direction to create more and more synergies. theMICAM in Milan, international focal point for the world of footwear, which will be back from 15th to 18th February and then in the second semester from 1st to 4th September.” TheMICAM, pride of Assocalzaturifici and the entire Italian footwear sector is a worldwide focal point for the entire system. The next theMICAM will be the last one of my mandate and I am particularly satisfied with the work we have done during these four years, which have brought our event to confirm its role as first fair in the world for the footwear sector. These have been intense years, during which the event has evolved thanks to the courage to innovate and make choices that are not always easy. It’s a route started by my predecessors, which allowed theMICAM to become a showcase of excellence for Made in Italy and worldwide fashion in the sector. I am very proud of the work done by the Association and the entrepreneurs, who keep choosing this event and help us make it grow. 2015 will set forth a series of fair previews stemming from the need to align with the schedule of the international fair calendar and to give more competitiveness to companies, which can present their collections in advance, therefore granting buyers a better purchasing plan”. Assocalzaturifici relies a lot on theMICAMshanghai. “theMICAMshanghai sets-off again from CHIC: right from the start, we have always believed in this event and without the commitment and investments of the association and all the entrepreneurs who have believed in theMICAMshanghai we wouldn’t have been able to create the only Italian platform abroad for fashion. We were aware from the beginning that offering a project for such a complex country as China would have been difficult and a long-term task. Seeing Made-in-Italy footwear and clothing presented as a whole in a prestigious showcase like CHIC today is the sign that we have found the right direction and we are offering Italian companies a tool that is unique and strategic to penetrate the Chinese and Asian market. I would like to thank the Institutions and ICE – Agency for promotion abroad and internationalisation of Italian companies, for their strategic support. My special thank you goes to the Vice Minister for the economic development Carlo Calenda, for his great help in promoting Made in Italy in the world. The best buyers from China and all the Far East are ready to discover total look proposals and Italian style, and I am sure that our companies will take this unique opportunity to show the value, craftsmanship and tradition of our manufacture”. The Assocalzaturifici Conference in Florence Footwear production makes a return to Italy Reshoring: or rather, the “migration” of the footwear manufacturing industry, which intends to bring machines, specialists, and the line of models back to Italy, was the theme of the conference held and organized by Assocalzaturifici on Saturday, November 15th, in Florence. At the meeting, illustrious guests like Renato Mannheimer, James Ferragamo, Toni Scervino, Daniel Kraus, Carlo Pambianco Viola, and Minister Giuliano Poletti participated. Cleto Sagripanti, President of Assocalzaturifici, was instead the event’s esteemed host. With the title, “The Great Comeback - Business, Government and Banks for Made in Italy in Italy", the idea was that of focusing on this phenomenon that is taking root in many countries around the world for a number of reasons: first and foremost is the one related to logistics, with its costs of transportation, increasing production costs, poor productive quality, and late deliveries. Another is that related to the need to come back under the great “umbrella” of Made in Italy. In Italy, 376 businesses from different sectors made the return to Italy from China, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia, and in the worldwide classification of “great comebacks”, Italy is at second place after the United States, coming in before Germany, England, and Slovakia. The results of the research presented and carried out by the Back-reshoring Research Group of the Uni-CLUB MoRe University Consortium were also interesting, presenting unreleased data on the phenomenon of reshoring, which had already come to the Association’s attention a few months ago, and which is now being analyzed through a study that involves a sample of businesses in the sector. Although up until now it has been limited and restricted, compared to its true potential, and also because of the legislative context that is still problematic, and an economic situation that is not very favorable, the return of production to Italy, according to the study, is a slowly growing phenomenon also present among medium-sized companies in the segment of fashion footwear. In reference to the sample of companies surveyed by Assocalzaturifici, by far the biggest reason behind the decision to reshore was that of lowering production costs. The primary motivating factor in choosing to reshore production is represented by the added value that the market sees in Made in Italy products, as well as by the very low quality of the products and/or production practices carried out beyond the Italian border, including problems with on time deliveries. The truly competitive element that acts as a driving force in the reshoring of production seems to accordingly be that of the quality and on time delivery represented by the short Italian supply chain. Hence, the study demonstrates the need to return to Italian expertise and excellence, which is capable of producing an inimitable value, which is a matter of fact. And so, the question must be asked as to how well Italian consumers know Made in Italy and how much this value guides their purchasing choices. It is from this question that the study carried out by ISPO’s Renato Mannheimer begins, with a survey that polled a sample of Italian consumers, one of buyers that work both in the Italian and foreign markets, and a sample of opinion leaders in the sector. Un inizio vivace, un proficuo scambio di punti di vista, poi il via alle contrattazioni negli stand e alla moda in passerella. recognize the quality and guarantee of Italian footwear, they do not feel the “call” of it, and so Made in Italy is not a parameter taken into consideration when making their choice in footwear. Made in Italy must be accordingly saved from foreign competition and counterfeiting, but also from the risk of sliding into the oblivion represented by these consumers’ indifference. “Today we are in Florence”, – commented Cleto Sagripanti at the end of the conference, “– to tell a new story that speaks of the value of Made in Italy and of how it is closely tied to the double link of the territory and its production chain, with many of the companies that decided to outsource, now thinking of making a return. The signals are quite clear, but are still in an initial phase. We need for the Institutions to help us promote a new awareness and create a new Renaissance for Made in Italy, which is also now possible thanks to the introduction of the obligatory Country of Origin labels on a European level. As Italians we must be the first watchdogs of our know-how and we cannot ignore or underestimate a value that is recognized around the world”. < From pag. 10 ranged from the fight against counterfeit goods to the quality/price ratio of Italian footwear. Made in Italy is accordingly confirmed as a point of reference for consumers, a quality product, and a strength for our Country. For 78% of those surveyed, buying Made in Italy means buying a trustworthy product that ensures the safety of the consumer, as well as guaranteeing a socially correct production that does not exploit workers. However, there is one element that emerges from the survey that cannot be ignored: although consumers TheMICAM standard-bearer of Made in Italy in the world with its 15 thousand exhibitors coming 130 countries and a field of 35 thousand visitors. The opening round table at theMICAM, February edition, has seen the participation of the President of theMICAM Cleto Sagripanti, the Vice Minister for the Economic Development Carlo Calenda and the Council Member for Labour Policies, Economic Development, Fashion and Design of the City of Milan, Cristina Tajani. Next to them, the Chief Executive Officer of FieraMilano spa, Enrico Pazzali, all coordinated by presenter Eleonora Daniele. The meeting intended to underline the common road followed by the organisers of theMICAM and the institutions, a work of synergy that made President Sagripanti say “At last politicians have noticed us”. It is definitely those 50 million Euros specifically given to fairs, in the context of those 216 million Euros allocated to re-launch Made in Italy, mentioned by Carlo Calenda, which represent a good springboard. Something tangible that supports events, which are not an old-fashioned tool, but the most efficient way for average size and small footwear companies to work. TheMICAM has all the rights to be considered one of the events to invest in, in that system of contributions that the government has announced and that contemplates everything but abundance. As to say: selection is everything and theMICAM passes the test, with the level of events, business and figures (also in terms of presences in town) it brings along and is able to transfer all over the world. After all Milan is the most important platform for Made in Italy and, at the same time, the centre of the entire fashion system, from the production to the sales, as Tajani assessed including theMICAM among the protagonists of the fashion system’s most important events. During the opening event there was time for the greetings from the Vice President of Portugal, accompanied by the Ambassador and the President of the Shoemakers’ Confederation (80 companies taking part in the fair). Moreover some considerations on the Chinese market and theMICAM Shanghai, but also on some burning issues such as the Russian embargo and, naturally, the situation of Italy “the Country still to get out of the crisis”. A lively start, a fruitful exchange of points of view and the kick-off for business at the stands and fashion on the catwalk. Un’occasione unica, che rende sempre più concreta la possibilità di ingresso e il consolidamento sul mercato cinese per le piccole e medie imprese della moda italiana. theMICAMshanghai returns theMICAMshanghai returns in March with new dates and a new positioning, which will see the synergic involvement of Assocalzaturifici, Fiera Milano and its company in China HMFS – Hannover Milano Fair Shanghai, SMI – Sistema Moda Italia and EMI – Ente Moda Italia, in collaboration with ICE – Agency for the promotion abroad and internationalisation of Italian companies. Whilst maintaining its own identifying characteristics, in March 2015 theMICAMshanghai teams up with CHIC, the Chinese exhibition of reference for the sector which has recently moved from its historic premises in Beijing to Shanghai to be more open to the dynamics of the international fashion system. From the very beginning, theMICAMshanghai focused on this city as the ideal venue to present Italian fashions to the Chinese market and in the March event will introduce an area dedicated to Italian excellence “theMICAM shanghai & Italian Fashion@chic”. theMICAMshanghai will be held in Hall 6.1 of the new National Exhibition & Convention Centre, in the district of Hongqiao, candidate to be the biggest hub of fashion in the world, at the same time as CHIC from 18 to 20 March 2015 and will see an integrated exhibition platform presenting Italian collections of clothing, footwear and accessories for men, women and children, in the top-end and mid-high range, to the Chinese market. The synergy with CHIC will open the field to over 110,000 visitors expected from all over China and from other main Asian markets. Among the novelties of the upcoming theMICAM shanghai is also the debut of Ente Moda Italia, with a selection of Italian companies and their new collections of clothing for men, women and children, which will be found in the special “Italian Fashion@Chic” area. Therefore, for the first time, the Italian fashion system will show a united front, in a context especially studied and created as part of the biggest exhibition dedicated to international fashion in China. In fact, the aim of theMICAMshanghai is to create new synergies from the combination of fairs in this new centre of international fashions. The new event’s objective is to capitalise and systematise experiences and investments made by Italian companies and public and private citizens to promote Italian fashion in China. The synergy between the partners promoting the project will translate into an opportunity to meet dealers of one of the most promising markets, whose distribution system is being sub-divided into boutiques, multi-brand stores, department stores and e-commerce platforms increasingly more interested in diversifying to raise the level of their offer. This is a unique occasion that makes the possible entry and consolidation of small and midsized Italian fashion companies on the Chinese market even more real. Shoes & Food: excellences side by side “Shoes & Food”, a partnership of two symbols of “Made in Italy”, has been celebrated by the latest edition of theMICAM Creative Award as a tribute to the theme of Expo 2015 “Feeding the Planet: Energy for Life”, the event that will turn the spotlights on Milan starting from first May. It is a topical subject and it saw creative minds from all over the world competing. Maria Livia Sciacca and the team made up of Norberto Cenci, Alfonso Maria Mongiu and Fabrizio Cenci are the equal winners who will share the 1,000-euro prize. The announcement came from Cristina Schieppati, directress of “Chi è Chi della Moda” (Who is Who in Fashion), curator of the competition that put a fashion object such as footwear in comparison to food. At the press conference, Schieppati pointed out what a difficult job it was for the Jury to select the numerous works coming from Italy, other European countries like Spain and Germany, USA and Russia, but also China and Mexico. An enthusiastic response to the announcement of the competition that has recorded over 84,000 contacts on its webpage since last September. In the end, two works above all managed to combine art and marketing at their best. “Frankenstein’s foot” is a video of the monster’s big foot shaped in bread fitted in a cardboard shoe, by Roberto Cenci’s work team, won for the following reason: “it has offered an unexpected interpretation of the given theme, result of the work of an art director, a professional photographer, a musician and a baker. For its expressive method, it has found its ideal collocation among the works of art”. The project of Maria Livia Sciacca is a video showing a book with turning pages of pictures of shoes and dishes of the Italian tradition. Scanning through the meals and the moments of refreshment throughout the day it “has offered an ironic and delicate interpretation of the theme with an enjoyable video – says the reason for the prize – played on the association between shoes & food, which has found its ideal collocation among works aimed to marketing and communication”. The official prize-giving of theMICAM Creative Award will be this evening, Monday 16th February, during the event “Night in the Limelight @ theMICAM Square”, at 6.00pm in theMICAM Square at hall 10. Therefore, Cimac offers to support those companies that need to use chemicals in their working process, including substances listed in Appendix XIV of the regulation. This initiative has been launched because Echa (the agency for the application of the “Reach” regulation) has offered to take part in a telephonic question time in order to solve any perplexities on the use of chemicals. Winter 2016 according to the stylists In the multitude of individual brand proposals currently on the market, we asked and verified with style bureaus specialized in the segments of footwear and leather goods, what exactly they believe a collection should focus on, in order to reply to the real needs of the end customer, in terms of shapes, colors, materials, and moods. Here as follows are their answers. Sandra Agostini The leading theme for Fall/Winter 2015-16 is without a doubt SPORTY CHIC. Fashion is taking a lot from the world of sports and vice versa. The tendency is to add casual allure, if not couture, to sports models. This way athletic footwear can be worn on even the most fashionable or elegant occasions, or are perfect for going to work. The cycling couture lines were created for those who use their bicycles in the city. Featuring sneakers in suede leather or in calfskin, with glitter designs, this sparkling and bright style is no longer reserved only for glamorous occasions, but can al- so be used as part of a daily look that is casual, practical, and comfortable. Boots have also made a great comeback: classic, sporty, or inspired by the equestrian world. Instead, a 60’s inspiration, with a strong and decided style, is dedicated to the contemporary woman. Even ankle boots are by now a must for women, above all, in an urban and casual style. The colors for the coming winter are characterized by strong and intense tones. Black is the protagonist, while ‘ex-black’, which is dulled down to dark gray, dark green, dark blue, and dark brown, is even better. The palette is completed by the warmer tones of red, orange, violet, and Bordeaux, while neutral tones, like leather and rust with a touch of pink, help soften the entire look. 2015 will be the International year of “Light”, and so it will be completely lit up by glitter and by everything that shines, as well as by metallic touches. This mix of Sport and Couture can also be found in men’s lines, because elegance and a classic style no longer have to forego comfort and practicality. Thus, it will not be difficult to find sneakers and Oxfords in mixed leathers and technical fabrics, as part of a sporty-chic style. Other popular styles will include derby shoes and half boots with rubber soles or innovative and resistant materials. Must-have colors include prune, grape red, musk, and black with its scale of grey tones that fade into white, which are also often found in the sole. Instead, as far as Junior footwear is concerned, the gap between the children’s/junior world and the adult one seems to be lessening. Adults often find themselves playing with the videogames of their children, who in turn grow up with technology, mimicking their parents also in their tastes and styles. Thus, the sport glam style can also be found here, with a use of material and colors that are natural and ecological, and lines that are inspired by outdoor life, adventures, escapism, and team sports reminiscent of the 80’s. The colors revolve around a theme of happiness: blue, red, pink, and yellow with sequin and glitter appliqués are perfect for the genuine princess or prince, who belong to a modern and eco-friendly fable. In terms of materials, in the more technical lines we find cutting-edge, innovative, and resistant materials with strong, bright, fluo, glossy, and acid colors that are layered, while also featuring kaleidoscope and three-dimensional effects. Alternatively, there are technical materials, like neoprene or nylon, which are matched with leather and printed 3D fabrics for a street style look. Alberto Fermani with an Amish spirit and completely new sneaker The brand’s collection, which is inspired by sober elegance, features two brand new proposals: water-resistant footwear and a new sneaker model, both of which are the fruit of the stylistic and technical research typical of the Alberto Fermani brand that is also a symbol of Made in Italy worldwide. The mood of the Alberto Fermani fall/winter 15-16 collection is inspired by a sober and basic elegance. The stylists have reinterpreted in a modern key the basic shapes of the Amish style and of those cultures connected to the increasingly sought out values of simplicity, strong ties with tradition, and the desire to have a simple and happy life at home. This year next to the traditional collection, an innovative project featuring a new sneaker that unites “technical” elements with craft workmanship has been presented. The AF Sneaker includes a hi-tech Vibram sole, a running upper with hand crafted stitched details, and a mix of traditional (vegetable tanned leather) and technological (elastic neoprene) aspects. Naturino: warm and protected, with glamour appeal The brand proposes an array of models for the cold of winter: from first steps to footwear for sports, from the Rainstep line to back to school, along with a range of more elegant items. For the coming winter, prints are the great protagonists: polka dots, plaid, houndstooth, and that’s not all. There are also spotted, Cavallino, and python prints. Next to classic materials, like calfskin and velour, room is also made for new and extremely cuttingedge fabrics: there are mirrored and brushed leathers for a “street style” effect; while nappa, nylon and lamé mirroredleather are enriched by studs and antiqued effects. The Naturino collection also focuses on a mix and match of materials and colors. The chromatic palette makes use of autumn shades and the most up-to-date patterns: from petroleum blue and ivory to blueberry and antique pink. Next to the bluest tones, also corn yellow, ochre and brown with a touch of lacquering can be found. A play of light is also expressed in stronger colors, like gold and steel.
