From the Deacon’s desk…
Last weekend the people rejected, this weekend the invited
guests refuse to come to the
feast prepared. It seems that
Jesus is touching upon a lack of
respect that people tend to show. In particular, the
lack of respect shown to Jesus and to the Church.
Let us listen to His stern warning and let us, together, accept His presence in our lives and His invitation to come to the Altar of God for the feast of
our salvation. He calls. Will you respond?
October is the Month of the
Holy Rosary…
As has been a decade long tradition, the Holy Rosary will be prayed: Monday -Thursday at 6:45 p.m.
& Fridays at 6:00 p.m. in the Rectory Chapel.
Come celebrate the Month of the Holy Rosary.

Do I HAVE TO vote?
As Catholics, we have a moral obligation to vote.
We are taught in the Catechism of the Catholic
Church: “Submission to authority and coresponsibility for the common good make it morally
obligatory to pay taxes, to exercise the right to vote,
and to defend one's country.” 25% of the voters in
elections are Catholics. Those who vote have the
opportunity to make ours a better nation, more welcoming to life, more supportive for families and
more effective in its programs to help the poor and
disadvantaged.

Spinelli’s in Day Square on Wednesday,
October 22, 2014 from 6:00—9:00 p.m.

1. Each year we are faced with the ever growing cost
of home heating oil.
2. We have our responsibility to East Boston Central Catholic, our parochial school.
3. Each week we are about $1,000.00 off in our collections.
Let’s recall some of the great things we were able to
accomplish with the proceeds from years past. To
begin, we completely built a restroom in the foyer of
the main Church. This was accomplished from last
year’s Grand Annual. Several years ago, we were
able to install air conditioning in the upper Church
and renovate the air conditioning in the Church Hall.
We extended the parking lot and cleaned up and
made a green space in the area behind the Church.
The rectory was repointed and many other maintenance jobs were done. This year we want to continue
the momentum of years past and raise once again
$50,000.00. With your help this ambition goal will
be met and perhaps surpassed! Together we can do
it!

non se ne curarono e andarono chi al proprio

The Massachusetts Bishops speak on the
November Ballot Question on Casinos
Roman Catholic Bishops in Massachusetts released
a statement calling for the repeal of the state’s 2011
expanded gaming law. Voters will get the opportunity to do so in November, as Ballot Question 3 will
ask whether to do away with the law. The statement
was signed by Cardinal Sean O’Malley, Worcester
Bishop Robert McManus, Springfield Bishop
Mitchell Rozanski, and Fall River Apostolic Administrator George Coleman. In the statement, the bishops say the Massachusetts economy has improved
since 2011, suggesting the state has less of a need for
casinos now than it did then. The state’s bishops had
also campaigned against the passage of that law. The
bishops also speak to the struggling casino industries
in other states, especially emphasizing the troubles of
Atlantic City in recent weeks. While Catholicism
allows for “games of chance”—and indeed, many parishes host Bingo games and other raffles as a revenue source—church officials look at the casino industry from a wider perspective. The Catholic Catechism addresses gambling under its broader discussion of the Seventh Commandment, “Thou Shalt
Not Steal.” The Catechism makes clear that “games
of chance themselves are not contrary to justice,” but
adds the very strong caveat that gambling becomes
morally unacceptable when it deprives “someone of
what is necessary to provide for one’s needs and
those of others.” In their statement, the bishops emphasize what they see as possible negative effects of
welcoming casinos into the state: “While the Catholic Church views gambling as a legitimate form of
entertainment when done in moderation, expanded
gaming in the Commonwealth opens the door to a
new form of predatory gaming. We are concerned
that the Commonwealth will be forced to rely on an
unstable form of revenue, depending largely on
those addicted to gambling.” written by Adam
