Mario Bertoli nuovo Presidente Assomet The new Chairman for Assomet, Association of non-Ferrous Metals. Mr. Mario Bertoli, Managing Director of METRA, was appointed during the Ordinary Shareholders’ Meeting held last 4th July. Mr. Mario Bertoli takes over from Mr. Cesare Coccia, who completed his mandate with the presentation of the results achieved by the sector in 2007, including the Italian and international economic position, the trend for non-ferrous metals and the principal activities engaged in by Assomet. The newly appointed Chairman of Assomet will be supported by the following DeputyChairmen: Ms. Roberta Niboli (Raffmetal), Mr. Amedeo Gnutti (S.A. Eredi Gnutti), Mr. Gaetano La Corte (Eco-Bat) and Mr. Paolo Orlando (KME Italy) during the 2008-2010 biennial. Mario Bertoli’s Chairmanship will have the following objectives according to his declaration: “First of all, I will ensure that we continue Assomet’s current activities, and there are indeed many. The Association is important for the entire non-ferrous metal sector. Undoubtedly, my Chairmanship intends to give more space and voice to the small and medium-sized enterprises. The current turmoil in the economy and the markets make this position even more significant. We will be able to address the changes which are in progress more effectively, altogether, if the small and medium-sized players in this industry also take a more active interest in the Association’s Nuovo Presidente per Assomet, Associazione dei Metalli non Ferrosi. E’ Mario Bertoli, Amministratore delegato METRA, eletto in occasione dell’Assemblea ordinaria dello scorso 4 luglio. L’ing. Mario Bertoli succede all’ing. Amedeo Gnutti (S.A. Eredi Gnutti), ing. Gaetano La Corte (EcoBat) e dr. Paolo Orlando (KME Italy). Presentation by Stefano Ciarleglio at the conference: “Progettazione con le leghe leggere e nuovi materiali tecnologici” (Designing with light alloys and new technological materials) organised during the last edition of Alumotive. The know-how achieved by the METRA Industrial division in the transport sector was the topic of two presentations made in equally important conferences during the last edition of Alumotive at Modena. In this issue of the All METRA News International Industry, we describe, in particular, the presentation by Mr. Stefano Ciarleglio “The use of extruded profiles in automotive designs: simplicity, functionality, technological aspects” at the conference: “Progettazione con le leghe leggere e nuovi materiali tecnologici” (Designing with light alloys and new technological materials). A comprehensive overview of the aluminium scenario was outlined in consideration of its sustainability and its consumption, particularly with reference to the transport sector. In particular, Ciarleglio highlighted aluminium’s recyclable aspects, which renders it a modern, current material and with positive environmental impacts. But, above all, the lightweight aspect assumes an enormous significance in the modern automotive industry, since it compensates the constant increase in mass due to the continuous addition of accessories due to the increasing demands for comfort and performance made by motorists. The increase in the number of aluminium components has been significant, particularly from the ’90s up to and present time with a trend that is expanding continuously. We will now outline a brief history, starting from 1930 to the present-day, describing the application of aluminium components in cars: engine and transmission parts, alloy rims, frame and suspension parts, suspended parts, bumpers. And the identification of two macro-families of aluminium components: for plastic deformation (extruded profiles) and for casts (die-cast and forging). Material that is selected more and more for the high performance and competitive advantages, including the energy saving aspects. Stefano Ciarleglio continued his report by illustrating a series of studies performed by METRA on extruded aluminium alloy components for various car models. In addition, he highlighted how the use of an extruded profile when compared with a forged component can already be advantageous in the design phase based on cost-benefit and time-related assessments (reactivity in the rapid preparation of prototypes and lower investment costs). Then he proposed the example of a typical die-cast component (suspension arm) that if produced using an extruded profile, already based on the detailed assessment in the design phase, not only complies fully with the mechanical features, which the suspension arm must withstand for obvious structural reasons, but actually has enhanced features compared with the components produced using different methods. All these aspects highlighted the importance of design and the use of plants with cutting-edge technical resources. In this regard METRA has invested significant resources, in recent years, to have plants which are able to produce extruded components with improved physical, chemical and mechanical features compared with the standard requirements; in particular, components produced using EN AW 6005 A T6 alloy which have a distinctly superior performance compared with the standards. The most recent studies performed by the METRA technical department include a special anti-vibration support, produced traditionally using die-cast material, and that when produced using an extruded profile has enabled the final positioning of two “eyes”, offset at 90°, respectively, after suitable cold mechanical machining. A solution that has enabled the two-dimensional limit of the extrusion production to be overcome. The large glass and aluminium surface areas of high aesthetic and technological impact confirm the implementation capabilities of the two Italian companies. International Office Concept exists in its own right since 1992, the year the Lema group, owned by the Meroni family, one of the Italian leaders in the production of contemporary furnishing systems since the Fifties, decided to open a new division dedicated entirely to the design and production of furnishings for the office sector. Castiglia Associati design firm which comprise the collection of office furnishings: from top management (Bonifacio) to operating offices (Freeway, Go, SC_06), from the partition walls (Reflex), all produced using aluminium profiles extruded by METRA, to the containers (Cabinets and Freecontainers). Freeway represents the first product of the Castiglia Associati era and the partnership with METRA, presented very successfully at the ‘Salone del Mobile’ (Furniture Exhibition) of Milan (1992) and nominated for the ‘Premio Compasso d’Oro’, which marked the company’s international rise. The two recent New York job orders which opened the way in the difficult United States market, have marked the Company’s definitive non-European success. This is confirmed by Mr. Krzysztof Miksza, Product Engineering Manager of International Office Concept: “We produced the partition wall systems in New York for the offices of the New York Times and for the Hearst Building (and many others), the skyscrapers designed by the architects Renzo Piano and Norman Foster, respectively. In both cases we developed the partition wall system based on the designs by the Gensler design firm, appointed to manage the interior design of the buildings. A large sliding door system was adopted (3.4 x 1.6 metres) for the twenty floors of the New York Times (we successfully beat thirty competitors in the tender by producing three different samples) for which METRA produced 21 new matrixes in record time. The development of the Reflex system was particularly complex in this case, both from the design point of view, due to the structural implications (the significant weight and dimensions of the sliding doors) and requiring new accessories to be produced: impact decelerator to limit the final braking phase, sliding system, special security locks, handles. Whereas, the hinged panel door version for the Reflex system was modified in the case of the thirty floors in the Hearst Building, by minimising the aluminium weight-bearing structure, with an oxidised silver finish, in favour of the glazed portion. METRA produced 12 different matrixes in this case. But the projects in America do not end there. We are participating in other important job orders not only in the Big Apple. Naturally, without precluding the other markets: Spain, France, Great Britain, Luxembourg, Australia, etc. ”The Lema group has currently two operating centres, one centre that covers 30,000 square metres at Particolari del sistema scorrevole Reflex appositamente studiati per la sede del New York Times. Alzate Brianza (Co) and the other centre covers 18.000 square metres at Giussano (Mi), this is the General Headquarters of International Office Concept, which will soon be extended. Therefore, expansion for International Office Concept is a consolidated reality. The merit goes to the ongoing search for tangible and innovative content, both in terms of the way of living-working within the office environment, and as regards the technical solutions adopted. ENGLISH Profili paesaggistici in alluminio ALUMINIUM LANDSCAPE PROFILES Innovative and eco-compatible materials and equipment for hobby and professional gardening, which ensure savings also in the maintenance costs, these represent Tutor International’s production range, differentiated in various areas. In particular, the “Borderal 100” system is a landscape profile to define and contain flowerbeds, paths and the separation points between the materials which make up the garden: stonessoil, stones-grass, gravel-grass, etc... The profile is produced using an aluminium foil that enables various garden decoration and rationalisation designs to be adopted with the utmost simplicity and rapidity. The profile is lightweight, flexible and adaptable to any arrangement. The foil is applied to the ground using a system of specifically designed stakes allowing the foil to be anchored firmly and securely for years and without the need for further operations (cement, brickwork, etc.). In addition, the aluminium profile is a valid substitute for the normal edging curbs which require cement to be cast causing the grass to be burnt.
