Obiettivi formativi: Acquisizione di una buona conoscenza della storia letteraria e della
cultura inglese moderna e contemporanea, con attenzione alla diversità delle geografie
culturali e letterarie. Acquisizione di competenze relative alle metodologie di analisi e
della ricerca critico-letteraria anche attraverso lo studio di testi esemplari.
Programma del corso: Il corso intende offrire un approfondimento di alcuni nessi storici e
culturali presenti nella letteratura del periodo specificato attraverso la lettura di testi di
alcuni autori rappresentativi del canone inglese. Si approfondiranno tematiche, contesti e
strategie narrative secondo un taglio interpretativo mirante a far emergere l’elaborazione
letteraria delle figure femminili nei testi scelti.

Aims:
Programme: This course provides an overview of English literature through the study of a
variety of texts by some of the most representative authors of the British canon. The course
will focus on topics, contexts and textual strategies with a view to underlining the literary
representation of the female characters in the texts we will analyze.
Compulsory readings:
Literary texts:
Charles Dickens, Hard Times (any unabridged English edition);
Joseph Conrad, The Return (any unabridged English edition, including web version);
James Joyce, The Dead (any unabridged English edition, including web version);
J. M. Coetzee, Disgrace (any unabridged English edition)
Critical essays: a list of essays on the above authors/texts will be provided during the
course. References will be available on my website.

Measures for foreign students: an intermediate knowledge of both Italian and English.
Notes: The course will be taught in Italian. The literary texts used will be in English.
Students who cannot attend the course should inform the teacher about their situation as
