M y years at Shintoho were ones of extraordinary happiness whic h I will always re me mber nostalgical ly. Whe n I worked as assistant director. I used to go for a drink of cheap sake w ith my workmates after the day was done. We' d talk non-stop about the films and books that we loved. J apanese and foreign alike. One of the assistants showed me some cheap lodgings for the cold, winte r nights. as the last train had already left: some huge garbage cans close to the station. very comfortable but sometimes already inhabited. La ter ca me the years with M itsugi Okura and the budget cuts: but he always gave us freedo m as long as the films made money. And my films. in general, made money. At Toei. I wasn't particularly interested in the series of ··ero gro'' fil ms about torture and crimes that I filmed . It was the producer O kada's idea. He desperately wanted a new line of fi lms that would attract the a!le ntion of the public. For me. the greatest importance ofToei was the c ha nce they gave me to finall y bring my beloved Rampo Edogawa to the screen. Rampo is a difficult idea to sell to producers, because his work is difficult to adapt to the screen. My love for Rampo's work started when I was in school. when I would read his detective novels. hiding the m behind my desk. Shortly after. I started reading his books for adults too. although I didn' t always understand everything. When I met the dancer Tatsumi Hij ikata. a fun a nd ve ry extravagant man . I knew this was the big chance I had been waiting for. Over the years I reme mbe r my times at Shintoho. and I realize that it is very important to teach young people, who have few opportunities to learn and make cine ma hands on, as we did. For that reason, one of my hopes now is to work with a team of young people. Using this same way of working, I am preparing a horror fi lm that I hope will not disappoint the public. In Giappone. sin dai tempi preistorici. .anno fare." E' proprio questo l' aspetto piu difficile da accettare per lo spettatore occidentale. Asian Cult Cinema no. 19. 1998 //E ro Gro" is a strictly Japanese kind o f eroticism. which represents a particular, albeit not the only nor the main, national perspective on desire. passio n, and vice. It's a perspective formed from complex socio-cultural roots. which later defines itself in di verse artistic manifestations: among them the c inema. - The dokuf u (literally po isonous woman), the national prototype o f the greedy woman without scruples. capable of triumphing over her masculine opponents, is a very important figure within the genre. Neverthe less, women forced to participate in more or less abnormal sexual practices, and generally enjoying the obligation in an ambiguous way, form the essential link between the different manners o f appl ying the "Ero Gro" concept. The women are young or mature; single or married; rural or urban; virgins or experts: totally nude. or wearing the typical kimono, o r every kind of uni fonn ... but systematically tied. beaten and raped. ln short, they are categorically subdued by the powerful. relentless. irrational and demanding lust of a Anonymous, orgiastic scene (after Hokusai) from the shunga book Kuni no Sakae (ca.1890). 10 BIZARRE SINEMA! certain class of Japanese male. The genre's anthropological base, very generally speaking, lies in the immemorial and unique Japanese antithesis between innocence and perversity, purity and horror. The etiology of both options. equally s implified, arises in the first case from a religious sense that finds its roots in the very origins of the nation. and in the second case proceeds from the many centuries of terrible internal fi ghting, within which even the most natural pleasures are associated with pain. blood, mutilation and fear. Consequently, an exclusive culture of suffering, palpable even in family movies, is shaped . It is a culture which manifests itself in diffe rent aspects; fro m victirnism, both personal and social. and self torture, both physical and psycho logical. to, of course sadomasochism; and that is to say both literally as a sexual practice. and metaphorically the relatio nship with reality and everyday life. Indeed, the key aspect o f "Ero G ro" is found in the sense with which it sees the Woman. ln Japan, since primitive times. the woman has been relagated to domestic tasks, maternal and sexual, according to a precise social model. Accordingly. even in the C ivil Code of 1898, patriarchy is extolled. and only men are recognized as legal persons; women are classified in the same category as «defo rmed beings and mentally retarded. >> O bviously. as a result of this. the Japanese woman has always embodied a virile ideal of submission-affection in the eyes of the foreigner. This is expressed metaphorically by the traditional geisha. who is not exactly a prostitute; in fact this word means "person o f art", and refers to a woman who entertains clients in the tea houses. which aren't exactly brothels either, through various skills. from the clearly sensual, to dance and song. Since about thirty years ago. the situation for the Japanese wo man has. without any doubt, improved substantially, and is approaching that o f their occidental counterparts. Rampo no jidai). In cinema. eroticism appears shortly before, in clandestine films projected in secret circuits in the same way as various other western countries and their "blue movies". But withjn official production. one must wait untjJ the twenties. since before this cinema, like theatre, is banned to actresses. and the female characters are represented by the onnagata. transvestite actors. So the first "vamps" (yofu. in Japanese) appear in Japanese cinema in the twenties with Nobuko Satsuki, Suzuki Sumiko and Komako Hara. Since then, and until the eruption of "Ero Gro'', the national director most interested in bring ing eroticism to the screen is the refined Kenji Mizoguchi. This great director. not unlike writers like the quoted Junichiro Tanizili or Kafu Nagai, often bases llis portraits of prostitutes and ·'vamps'' on real women he meets during his vice-seeking and turbu lent life; a life which doesn' t at all seem to have the beautiful serenity of hi s film art. In fact. Mizoguchi almost died when an angry lover stabbed him in the back. Strictly speaking. cinematographic "Ero Gro" begins in the mid-fifties. after the post war peri- 22 B I Z A R R E S I N E M A ! od following the Allied forces victory. The first signs appear in 1947. with the publication of an "ero gro" magazine. Kiran kurabu. which coincides with the first foreign-style strip tease show. It is very important to remember the extent of U.S. domination on the islands. which inc ludes Jaws created to contro l what to Christian American eyes was considered scandalous and immoral behavio ur on the part of those they called "the yellow monkeys··. They were indifferent. at the same time. to the raping of Japanese girls by their own soldiers. These Jaws still exist today. and they include the prohibition of prostitution and pornography. and the separation of men and women in public baths. creating shame of nudity. Thus. after the end of the American occupation with the signing of the Treaty of San Francisco in 1952. eroticism in Japanese ci nema escalates. particularly in the Thriller and Mystery genres. within the extremely strict national Studio System. At the same time. American films like Tire Bamboo Ho use (Samuel Fuller. 1955). The Tea House of the August Moon (Daniel Mann. 1956) or Sayonara (Joshua Logan. 1957). start exploiting the image of the "exotic'' Japan and the erotic fantasy of the geisha. Shortly after, an Ital ian documentary. following a fashion of national ci nematography, II paradiso del/'uomo (Giuliano Tomei. 1963). ratifies the stereotype o f Japan as an erotic Eden. "Ero Gro" is born. Not lo ng after. in the sixties, the " Pinku Eiga" (literally. "pink movie") appears. as does the ''Roman Porno" (an abbreviation of "romance pornography") in the seve nties. Because of these genres. the word gets out abroad that in Japan they make a lot of "trash cinema" about sexual vio lence. Minor legends such as directors Koj i Wakamatsu. Seijun Suzuki. and Teruo Ishii. arise through sensationalist articles in magazines specialized in fantastic cinema. like the French Midi Minuir Fantastique and the Spanish Terror Fantastic. Immediately after. the worldwide scandal provoked by Ai 110 korida I The Empire of the Se11ses (Nagisa Oshima. 1976) reveals this special Japanese eroticism internationally. Until then o nly the specialists know of the existence of this cinema. but after this there is no more hiding it. At the end o f the seventies. "Pinku Eiga•· and '' Roman Porno" make up about 65% of the national film production. But in the early eighties. the hard-core direct-to-video takes over the Japanese erotic genre market almost completely. Although it seems absurd. both male and Nippon gomon keibatsu shi I The H istory of Torture in Japan (1964) by direc tor a nd p roducer Kiyosh i Komori. female genitalia are censored in Japanese porn films. Except for the illegal versions that c irculate on the local blac k marke t or in some foreign countries. they are blurred by syste ms like ''fogging··. In the early ni neties. this law is modified and it"s now permitted to see pubic hair as long as it's suflicie ntly de n e. Anyway. these laws permit the J apanese governme nt to declare that pornography doesn· t ex ist in Japan ! And neither does prostitution. as any sexual ヲ 。カッ オイ セ@ arc allowed in exchange for money as long a• it doesn' t include vagi nal penetration. Th i• offi cial hypocrisy is reinforced by the fact that. accord ing to the Japanese Constitution. cen!.orship doesn · t exist either. Here lies the exclusive nature of Japanese e rotic cinema: with the words of Jack Hunter: «For ma ny western directors the all-too-easy descent into hardcore pornography inevitabl y goes hand in ha nd with the negation o f vis ion a nd creati vity. and the de pic tion o f close-up penetration becomes the sole fun ction of their art.
