INTRO 3 UN MONDO PER IMMAGINI UN MONDO PER IMMAGINI A world in pictures A WORLD IN PICTURES Il vino si vede, si pensa, si capisce… Wine must be observed and meditated on in order to be understood... It is a universally accepted idea that photography ‘speaks’ louder than words. In the wine-making sector this conviction is probably even truer than elsewhere. The cellars and the vineyards may also be narrated within a story or a poetic fragment, but images, even when they are simply descriptive, have a strong evocative feel to them, an immediacy and an accuracy that is truly unique. The earth, when we look at it, tells its own story. It is as if we can see the toil and plod of generations with all their hopes and plans whilst nature’s cycles take their course. These photographs of the world of Allegrini and those that will follow, invite you to enter in, to get to know us, enquire, meditate and understand. Wein sieht man, denkt, versteht… Vin må både betraktes og nytes i ettertanke for å kunne forstås... Vin bør nøje vurderes visuelt såvel som smagsmæssigt for at opnå den fulde forståelse… Denn Wein sieht man, denkt, versteht. Denne overbevisning gælder måske i særlig grad for vinproducenter. INDICE INDEX C O M PA N Y P R O F I L E 8 ALLEGRINI 20 POGGIO AL TESORO 52 SAN POLO 74 C O M PA N Y P R O F I L E 9 LA FAMIGLIA A F A M I LY T A L E Giovanni Allegrini Walter Allegrini Marilisa Allegrini Franco Allegrini Silvia Allegrini Caterina Allegrini Francesco Allegrini PROTAGONISTI NEL TEMPO A LEADING ROLE FOR GENERATIONS La famiglia Allegrini è protagonista della storia di Fumane e della Valpolicella fin dal XVI secolo. The Allegrini family has played a leading role in the Valpolicella since the 16th century. With some 100 hectares (247 acres) of vineyards in the Classico area in the municipalities of Fumane, Sant’Ambrogio and San Pietro In Cariano, it has passed down the culture of the vine and wine making for generations. The Company’s founding father and head of the new generation, Giovanni Allegrini, took up wine-making in his youth, perfecting the art of vinification via the careful selection of the grapes and by introducing important innovations from a viticultural point of view, such as introducing guyot training and increasing plant density in the vineyards. After Giovanni’s untimely death in 1983, the Company passed into the hands of his offspring Walter (who unfortunately passed away in 2003), Marilisa and Franco who, in a very short time have successfully taken the Company, which produces 900,000 bottles a year, to the pinnacles of international success. Tosay, Allegrini is one of the most prestigious producers in the Valpolicella Classico area and is considered one of the most highly acclaimed and recognized Italian wine producers in the world. In the past ten years, curiosity and an entrepreneurial spirit have led Allegrini to go beyond the confines of the Valpolicella to Tuscany. In 2001, Poggio al Tesoro was founded in Bolgheri, comprising 50 hectares of lovingly and meticulously cultivated vineyards in close proximity to the sea. In 2007, Marilisa Allegrini went on to purchased the San Polo Estate in one of the most prized Italian wine-making areas, Montalcino, where the great Brunello is produced. In Tuscany too, the Allegrini family is intent on combining tradition and innovation in producing typical Italian products, thereby further enhancing the excellence of the ‘Made in Italy’ label. Villa della Torre, an enchanting example of Italian Renaissance architecture, is now part of the Allegrini family estate. The project, by Giulio Romano and Michele Sanmicheli, was designed to recreate the Domus of Ancient Rome, in all its pomp and splendour. Thus, a courtyard or ‘Peristyle’ was built - the true heart of the Villa - and combined with 16th century motifs including the fish pond, representing Water as the vital element, and the gargoyle-style fireplaces designed by the great decorative artist, Bartolomeo Ridolfi, representing Fire in all its power and beauty. The small temple and the ‘Bucintoro’ grotto dedicated to Jupiter Ammon - which overlooks the Palazzo della Torre vineyard - complete the extraordinary scenic effect of the complex. All these features confirm the historical and artistic importance of the Villa. The Villa merges and forms a whole with the surrounding vineyard called Palazzo della Torre which produces a wine by the same name and which is now world-famous due to its intensity and complexity and because it has been included 6 times in the Wine Spectator’s list of Top 100 wines. Situated in the municipality of Sant’Ambrogio, the vineyard called La Grola extends for some 30 hectares (74 acres) and is in a truly extraordinary geographical position. The planting, which took place in 1979 and saw the then-revolutionary introduction of the Guyot training system and an increase in plant density to approx. 4200 vines per hectare (1700 vines/ac), was designed with the aim of enhancing and re-appraising Valpolicella’s most representative grape varietal. The perfectly white topsoil reflects the sun’s rays and guarantees that the grapes achieve ideal sugar concentrations and polyphenolic ripeness. The microclimate is produced by the combination of a series of factors that are practically impossible to reproduce in other areas of the Valpolicella. The ventilation is constant: cold fronts from the North originate from Mount Pastello; Lake Garda has a positive mitigating effect due to its warm air currents, generating higher overall temperatures. South-easterly exposure and the position on the top of the hill guarantees ideal insolation. In 1997, thanks to the same innovations that were carried out for La Grola, Giovanni Allegrini, recognized La Poja as the ideal location for producing a great wine using 100% Corvina. The grape drying process is one of the most delicate phases in the production of Amarone, as it is for its precursor, Recioto. During this lengthy period of ‘active dormancy’ which can last from 100 to 120 days, the grapes lose between 40% and 50% of their original weight and undergo a marvellous and highly complex chemical transformation that yields an elegant, velvety wine with the unmistakeable aroma of raisined fruit. Science has recently revealed the secret of this process: drying activates the genes that control the production of the aromas and substances that give Amarone its flavour and bouquet. Selected clusters of the autochthonous Valpolicella varietals Corvina Veronese, Rondinella and Oseleta, harvested between late September and early October, are laid in crates and left to dry in well-ventilated conditions. Close proximity to the sea has a mitigating influence on the climate in Bolgheri, while protection is offered against adverse climatic conditions by the hills to the east of the Estate. Sun – The balanced amount of sunlight enjoyed throughout the year is one of the main reasons for and the exceptional quality of the wines in Bolgheri. In particular, the extended summer that lasts through to October, ensures lengthy and complete maturation of the grapes. Temperature – The average annual temperature is between 13.914.3° C (57-58° F), with an average in spring and summer of 18.6° C (65.5° F). Only rarely, during January and February, does the temperature fall below freezing. Water – Average rainfall varies between 600-700 mm (23.6-27.5 inches) per year, with most falling during the spring and autumn. Light rains in autumn guarantee renewed growth in the life-cycle of the vines. Air – Given its proximity to the sea, the Estate enjoys beneficial breezes, with particularly clear skies and clean air all year round. The constant breezes reduce the risk of parasitic attacks, thus ensuring the development of perfectly healthy grapes. Light – Abundant ventilation and low levels of humidity in Bolgheri means that there are more sunny days with clear skies in comparison to most other parts of Tuscany. This makes for more efficient photosynthesis and thus fosters the ripening of the grapes and the accumulation of complex aromatic components and sugars. The Municipality of Montalcino is located 45 km (28 miles) south of Siena and 45 km (28 miles) east of the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is somewhat circular in form with a diameter of 16 km (10 miles), a urface area of 243 km2 (93 mi2) and is bounded by three rivers: Orcia, Asso and Ombrone. The hills of Montalcino were formed during different geological periods and therefore soil types vary greatly: at the higher elevations the soil is mostly calcareous and rich in fossils with large clay and limestone deposits. The San Polo Estate is located in the Podernovi area, on the southern slope of Montalcino, overlooking the valley of Sant’Antimo and facing Mount Amiata. The vineyards have a south/south-westerly exposure at an altitude of 450 m (1480 feet) above sea level, the best microclimate and terroir for Sangiovese. The area of Montalcino, and particularly the San Polo Estate in the area of Podernovi, is one of the most suitable for the cultivation of Sangiovese. The climate, due to its hilltop position, is particularly favourable as the days are warmer and drier than most other areas of Tuscany, and because of the frequent breezes the area is free of fog, freezing temperatures and late frosts. Sun – The summers are very sunny in Montalcino with very few rainy days which, nonetheless, prevent the soil from drying up completely. The ideal exposure of the vineyards guarantees the gradual and complete ripening of the grapes. Temperature – The climate is mild, hot in summer and temperate in winter, with numerous clear, dry days during the entire vegetative cycle. The average annual temperature is 15°C (59°F), with an average temperature in the spring and summer of 18.5°C (65.5°F). The nearby mountain range called Mount Amiata provides a natural barrier generating air currents that prevent excessive rainfall. Water – Rain strikes primarily in the early spring and late autumn with average yearly rainfall of 700mm (27.5 in) per year. Air – San Polo’s hilltop location ensures that the vineyards are always well ventilated and the air is particularly clear throughout the year. This not only keeps the humidity at a minimum, but also lessens the probability of attacks by parasites, thus guaranteeing the ripening of perfectly healthy grapes.
