stendersi al sole e lasciarsi affascinare da una meravigliosa natura. Come quella del Nicaragua, destinazione nuova nel panorama
turistico internazionale. Blue Panorama porta fin là i suoi aerei,

Reefs at Risk Revisited in the Coral Triangle è dimostrato che la barriera australiana ha un 20% in più di rischio rispetto alla
media mondiale (che sia aggira attorno
ad un valore del 60%), soprattutto a causa
dell’inquinamento e ad una pesca troppo
aggressiva. Sulla base di queste considerazioni l’Unesco ha deciso di intervenire annoverando la barriera tra i “beni dell’umanità in pericolo”.

La barriera corallina australiana è a rischio e quale miglior
sistema di salvataggio se non quello di annoverarla tra i
beni dell’umanità? A minare la salute dell’ecosistema le
attività umane che stanno man mano degradando l’habitat naturale. Secondo il report presentato al 12esimo
International Coral Reef Symposium, l’85% del “triangolo
corallino” – di cui fanno parte Malesia, Papua Nuova Gui-

the health of the ecosystem. According to the report presented at the 12th
International Coral Reef Symposium, 85% of the "coral triangle" - which

East Timor - is threatened by coastal development, overfishing, and watershed-based pollution. The report Reefs at Risk Revisited in the Coral Triangle shows that the Australian barrier has a 20% greater risk than the world
average (which is around 60%), mainly because of pollution and overfishing. Based on these findings, UNESCO has decided to intervene, listing the
Great Barrier Reef among the "World Heritage sites in danger".

Se il fumo è da sempre la vostra condanna,
mettete da parte libri terapeutici, cerotti e sigarette elettroniche: la soluzione definitiva al

ricercatori del Weill Cornell Medical College di
New York ha messo a punto uno studio per impedire alla nicotina di raggiungere il cervello
e quindi provocare la dipendenza. In passato
erano già stati elaborati dei rimedi in grado
di annientare la sostanza, il loro effetto però
era solo temporaneo. La nuova ricerca, se produrrà gli effetti sperati, sarà invece in grado
di annullare completamente il bisogno di nicotina. Dopo i fallimenti dei primi tentativi, gli
scienziati hanno intrapreso la via del vaccino
genetico, già impiegato in passato sui topi per
curare malattie degli occhi e alcune tipologie
di tumore. All’interno di un virus adeno-associato hanno inserito la sequenza genetica di un
anticorpo per la nicotina indirizzandolo verso
le cellule del fegato. In questo modo l’anticorpo ha la capacità di intercettare la sostanza e
bloccarla prima che raggiunga il cervello.

dimostra che il quoziente intellettivo delle donne è superiore a quello degli uomini. La ricerca ne esamina i fattori, tra cui lo sviluppo sociale e una maggiore istruzione.

a forme di comunicazione più celeri. In una
società in cui il tempo è ormai diventato un
lusso anche l’informazione interattiva deve
inevitabilmente “aggiornarsi”.

erché fare oggi quello che si può fare domani?
Il motto in Nicaragua è questo: manana (domani).
Che fretta c’è, d'altronde, si chiedono i nicaraguensi. La vita è troppo breve per spenderla a correre
di qua e di là, affannarsi e rompere ogni qualsivoglia forma di
armonia naturale. Ma allo stesso tempo la vita è lunga abbastanza per concedersi una meravigliosa avventura in un paese
speciale come il Nicaragua.
I ritmi qui sono lenti, la vegetazione è rigogliosa e il tempo c’è.
È lo spazio che manca in questa terra tra il Pacifico e il Mare
dei Caraibi, lo spazio per la fretta, lo stress e le rincorse di un
tempo che scappa via senza soluzione di continuità. Inutile,
quindi, pretendere di fermarlo, piuttosto sarà bene afferrarlo,
fare come i nicaraguensi per i quali afferrare la vita significa
prendersi il tempo, concedersi le pause, i movimenti lunghi e
necessari, il respiro profondo. Per tutti quelli che sceglieranno
il Nicaragua come loro prossima meta, ecco il primo consiglio:
iniziate a prepararvi per questa magnifica avventura spogliandovi del vostro orologio. E bandito è anche qualsiasi suo succedaneo – vedi lo smartphone!

Nicaragua's motto is mañana (tomorrow). What's the rush,
indeed, that’s what the Nicaraguans ask themselves. Life is
too short to spend it running here and there, to scramble and
break every form of natural harmony. However, at the same time, life is long
enough to enjoy a wonderful adventure in a special country like Nicaragua.
The pace is slow here, vegetation is lush, and there is plenty of time. Space is
what is lacking in this land between the Pacific and the Caribbean Sea. The
space to hurry, stress, and run against time seamlessly. It is useless, therefore, to try to stop time, it would be better to get a grip on it instead and do
as the Nicaraguans do. They believe that to grasp life means taking the time
to enjoy the pauses, the long and necessary movements, the deep breathing. For those of you who choose Nicaragua as your next destination, here's
the first tip: take off your watch as you prepare for this wonderful adventure.
And any of its substitutes are banned as well - such as smartphones!
To the south of Honduras and north of Costa Rica, Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America. The landscape is colorful and enchanting,
there are fertile plains and numerous volcanoes (about 40). The rain forest
is found close to the
south coast, and the rivers that originate in the mountainous north flow through
it . Green. Everything is green and nature is impenetrable in its majestic generosity. The sun filters through the dense foliage and an incredibly colorful species of
animals will delight your eye. For example the Guardabarracco, or Mot Mot, the
national bird, is a cute kind of bird with a special feature: it has a long tail that ends
with feathers resembling two small fans, usually in bright blue. It is a spectacular
experience to watch flocks of migratory birds invade the basin of Rio San Juan and
the Archipelago de Solentiname from August to October. Kingfishers, swallows,
parula from Tennessee, and scarlet tanagers all come for the winter.

paesaggio variegato, certamente incantevole, le pianure sono fertili e i vulcani
numerosissimi (circa 40), vicino alle coste della zona sud si sviluppa la foresta
pluviale attraverso cui scorrono i fiumi
che hanno origine nell’area montuosa
del settentrione. Verde. Tutto è verde e
la natura è impenetrabile nella sua maestosa generosità. Il sole filtra tra il fitto
fogliame e incredibili specie di animali
coloratissime vi incanteranno la vista:
come il Guardabarranco, o Mot Mot,

La più comune tra le ricette locali è il
gallo pinto, un piatto di riso e fagioli. Il
più conosciuto, ma certamente non l’unico. Il Nicaragua, infatti, riserva tante
sorprese culinarie. Ecco alcuni suggerimenti: il vigorón, un piatto di yuca servita con cotiche di maiale fritte, insalata
di cavolo e banane fritte, il quesillo, una
tortilla ripiena di formaggio, crema di latte, cipolla e chile e anche i buñuelos e il
vaho, entrambe a base di yuca. Da bere bevande a base di frutta che probabilmente non avrete mai visto prima: pitaya, calala e granadilla. Servite in sacchetti di
plastica con ghiaccio e cannuccia! In alternativa alla frutta, potrete gustarvi il tiste,
una bevanda fatta con cacao e grano, e il posol con leche, a base di grano e latte.

Among local recipes, the most common is gallo pinto. A dish made of rice and beans, it may be the best known, but it is certainly not the only one. Nicaragua, in fact,

caramellate. Ecco la ricetta di Anne.
Ingredienti per 6 persone:
6 pesche mature di grandi dimensioni, 4
cucchiai di burro, 4 cucchiai di zucchero
di canna, 2 uova grandi, 1 tazza di amaretti
tritati grossolanamente, 1 tazza di biscotti tritati grossolanamente, 4 cucchiai di
amaretti tritati per decorare, 2 cucchiai di
mandorle naturali tritate finemente.
Mettete le metà di pesche intatte, con il
lato cavo rivolto verso l'alto. Mescolate 2 cucchiai di burro
con 1 cucchiaio di zucchero e aggiungete il tutto alla alla
polpa dei frutti. Aggiungete le uova, i biscotti polverizzati e
gli amaretti tritati: mettetene un cucchiaio al centro di ogni
pesca scavata.Cospargete con le mandorle e lo zucchero di
canna. Cuocete da 25 a 30 minuti in forno a 200°.
Servite a piacere con panna montata.

Ingredients for 6 people:
6 large ripe peaches, 4 tablespoons of butter, 4
tablespoons of brown sugar, 2 large eggs, 1 cup
of coarsely chopped macaroons, 1 cup of coarsely chopped biscuits, 4 tablespoons of crushed
macaroons to decorate, 2 tablespoons of natural
and finely chopped almonds.
Turn the peach halves with the hollow side facing
up. Mix 2 tablespoons of butter and 1 tablespoon
of sugar, and then add everything in with the fruit.
Add eggs, powdered biscuits, and crushed macaroons: pour a spoon in the center of each hollow.
Sprinkle with almonds and brown sugar.
Bake 25 to 30 minutes in the oven at 200° C.

"Stay hungry, stay foolish": this is the sentence
procalimed by Steve Jobs in his famous 2005
speech at Stanford University. A sentence that,
more than any others, will remain engraved in
the hearts of all followers of the bitten Apple
been made. Apple-1 is now a collector's item. About 200 units were released on the market, of which 50 have survived and only six are still operational. The computer auctioned in New York is a true rarity.
In the first year without Jobs, Apple products have continued to be produced and sold, and anything that had belonged to or had even been
touched by the “Adam of the twentieth century” became a cult collector’s piece.
Going back to 2005, when Steve Jobs was still with us, he received an
honorary degree by Stanford University. On that occasion he gave a very
famous speech, touching upon different points of existence: work, love,
education, and growth.
He addressed his speech to a crowd of students and, among the topics
he spoke about, was Death: «Death is the destination we all share. No
one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very
likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out
the old to make way for the new».
Life is constantly changing, it goes on just like it is meant to, just like Apple. Steve Jobs died, but he is the one who created Apple’s most ingenious invention, he is the agent of change.

The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square
holes. The ones who see things differently. They're
not fond of rules. And they have no respect for
the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with

ome: Luigi Abete. Anni 65. Fratelli 2: Antonella e Giancarlo, il secondo è il presidente della
Federazione Calcio. Una l’azienda di famiglia,
l’A.Be.Te Spa (Azienda Beneventana Tipografia
Editoriale) fondata dal padre Antonio nel 1946. «Mio padre, che
l’ha costruita dal niente facendo un grandissimo lavoro, ci ha sempre
insegnato quanto fosse importante l’autonomia: “Puoi dire grazie a
tutti, ma non devi mai essere obbligato a dire grazie a qualcuno”, era la sua regola di vita. Che poi io, mio fratello e mia sorella
abbiamo applicato fino in fondo».
Luigi Abete è un uomo intelligente, caparbio e coraggioso.
Bon vivant e appassionato di grandi sfide. Così in non troppo
tempo è riuscito a fare un passo significativo, da stampatore a
editore, e ora controlla le agenzie Asca e Apcom e il settimanale Internazionale. Restio alle interviste, in una delle pochissime che ha concesso ha voluto rivendicare fra i suoi maggiori
successi come editore, l’acquisizione come principale azionista dell’Internazionale: «è una bellissima e ora anche prestigiosa
rivista, fatta da un direttore molto bravo e da una redazione e da

ame: Luigi Abete. Age: 65. One sister, Antonella, and
one brother, Giancarlo, who is the president of the
Italian Football Federation. A family business, A.Be.Te
Spa (Azienda Beneventana Tipografia Editoriale, Typography and Editorial Company based in Benevento, Italy) founded by his father Antonio in 1946. «My father built it from nothing and
he did a great job. He taught us how important autonomy is. "You
can say thanks to everyone, but you will never be obligated to say
thanks to anyone", this used to be his motto in life. My brother, my
sister, and I have applied this motto fully».
Luigi Abete is intelligent, stubborn and courageous. Bon vivant and
a lover of great challenges. These qualities helped him to make a
significant step in a short time: from printer to publisher, and he now
controls the news agencies Asca and Apcom and the weekly magazine Internazionale. Despite a reluctance to being interviewed, in
one of the few interviews he did grant he wanted to claim his greatest success as a publisher his acquisition as main shareholder of the
magazine Internazionale: «It’s a beautiful, prestigious, and independent magazine with a very good director and a very competent
editorial staff and team who are given the maximum freedom of
expression».
Entrepreneur and businessman, today he is the president of the Italian bank Banca Nazionale del Lavoro, board member of the pharmaceutical company Carlo Erba Farmitalia, and honorary president
of the prestigious LUISS University in Rome. He is also president
of the Italian public companies association ASSONIME, President

the world»: certainly, he could be an influential "big name voter". He was decorated
for his service to industry with two awards:
the first in 2000 as a Cavaliere all’Ordine del

Oggi Luigi Abete è impegnatissimo nel progetto di riqualificazione che coinvolge l’area degli Studios di Cinecittà. Numerose polemiche accompagnano questa operazione: i dipendenti
di Cinecittà manifestavano contro la temuta riorganizzazione
aziendale vista come una sorta di smantellamento, si vocifera
di resort e albergo a 5 stelle, ma il tutto viene rettificato da Luigi Abete che rassicura «si tratta di un nuovo progetto di sviluppo,
di nuovi teatri, di nuove strutture di servizi per Cinecittà, in un’area limitrofa a Cinecittà, ora abbandonata, senza toccare gli Studios
attualmente esistenti». Un futuro di sviluppo. Intanto per quella
porzione di Roma.

Today Luigi Abete is busy in the redevelopment project
involving the area of Cinecittà Studios. Many controversies have accompanied this project: Cinecittà employees
are protesting against the dreaded corporate reorganization seen as a sort of dismantling. There are rumors of new
constructions for a resort and a five-star hotel, but Luigi
Abete reassures «it is a new development project for the
construction of new theaters and new service structures for
Cinecittà, all in an area close to Cinecittà, which is currently
abandoned. The project will leave the existing Studios untouched». A future filled with new developments, at least,
for the area of Rome involved in the project.

a musica, la pittura, le arti. «Non sono soltanto cultura,
sono enormi piaceri della vita». Leo Brouwer sorride. Il
volto incorniciato da una barba tenuta con cura, gli
occhi vispi, l’animo sereno. è un elegante e discreto
monumento vivente della sapienza e dell’intelligenza cubana,
uno dei maggiori chitarristi classici del nostro tempo, adorato nel mondo e a Cuba, dove ha numerosi incarichi ufficiali,
inclusa la direzione della facoltà di musica all’Istituto del Cinema. Settant’anni ben portati, anche grazie a scelte meditate
di salutismo alimentare: «Sono diventato macrobiotico dopo essere
stato a lungo vegetariano. Ma credo che la macrobiotica, capace di eliminare la chimica dall’organismo e spazzare via quei processi che ucci-

and a serene mind. He is an elegant and living monument of Cuban wisdom and intelligence, one of the greatest classical guitarists of our time, and adored in Cuba and throughout the
world. In Cuba has many official roles, including being the director of the department of music at the Institute of Cinema. Seventy
years old and still going strong, thanks to his thoughtful choices of
healthy food: « I've become macrobiotic after having been vegetarian for such a long time. I believe macrobiotics are able to eliminate
chemicals from the body and eliminate those processes that break
dono, mi ha praticamente risistemato. Avevo
avuto un infarto, dovevo modificare il mio
stile di vita: un po’ di ginnastica e questa alimentazione, che non è affatto un sacrificio,
sono stati perfetti. Anche perché, come dice
il grande Roberto Benigni: La vita è bella».
Adora l’Italia e gli italiani: «Un paese straordinario, con cui sento di avere un
rapporto particolare, costruito sull’affetto e
l’ammirazione». Ma anche su mille ricordi. Brouwer ha vissuto per un periodo
a Roma. «La vita mi ha dato il privilegio
di avere amici meravigliosi in tutto il mondo, ma Roma – racconta – resta un luogo
fantastico. Ricordo gli anni ‘70, gli incontri
nella casa di Michelangelo Antonioni, a via
Frattina, ricordo Monica Vitti e un bellissimo cappotto che mi volle regalare. Tempi indimenticabili, che mi hanno legato a Roma e a
tutta l’Italia in modo fortissimo».
Come spesso accade ai grandissimi,
Brouwer appartiene al piccolo esercito
degli autodidatti. «Sono sempre stato curioso, anche da bambino», quando in casa respirava musica e arte. Padre compositore, madre cantautrice: «Si separarono, ma
questo, da noi, era già normale ai tempi della
mia giovinezza». Fu il padre, un affermato
medico, a incoraggiare quel ragazzino a
suonare a orecchio. Poi il giovane e promettente Brouwer cominciò a prendere
lezioni, troppo evidente era il suo talento per non offrirgli i migliori insegnanti:
prima il grande chitarrista e pedagogo
cubano Isaac Nicola, a sua volta discepolo di Emilio Pujol, e poi gli Stati
Uniti, Università di Hartford e Juilliard
School, dove studiò composizione con
Stefan Wolpe e Vincent Persichetti. Nel
1970 Brouwer suonò alla prima di El Cimarrón di Hans Werner Henze a Berlino. Insieme a Morton Feldman, nel 1972
ricevette una borsa di studio dal DAAD
(Servizio tedesco di scambio accademico), diventando compositore e docente
all'Accademia delle Scienze e delle Arti
di Berlino. E oggi sono numerosi i dischi
che ha registrato in Germania per la
Deutsche Grammophon.
Una vita da cosmopolita, che lo ha
portato a dirigere orchestre di tutto il
mondo, dalla Berlin Philharmonic alla
Scottish National Symphony Orchestra,
dalla BBC Concert Orchestra alla Sinfonica Nazionale del Messico. Ma anche
a fare differenze profonde fra quelli che
lui considera americani e gli altri abitanti degli Stati Uniti, che definisce “yankee”. Con distinzioni nette e facilmente
comprensibili: «Bush è yankee – dice –
Faulkner nordamericano».
Nel 1987 Brouwer è stato nominato, insieme ad Isaac Stern e Alan Danielou,
membro onorario dell’UNESCO come

better since I switched to a macrobiotic
diet. I had a heart attack and so I had to
change my lifestyle. A bit of gymnastics and
this diet, which are not sacrifices at all, have
been perfect for me. I’ve also done all this
because, as the great Roberto Benigni says:
Life is Beautiful».
He loves Italy and Italians: «An extraordinary country, with which I have a special
relationship, built on affection and admiration». But it is also a relationship built on
a thousand memories. Brouwer lived for a
while in Rome. «Life has given me the privilege of having wonderful friends around
the world, but Rome – he says – remains a
fantastic place. I remember the '70s when
I used to hang out at Michelangelo Antonioni’s house, in via Frattina, I also remember Monica Vitti and the beautiful coat she
wanted to give me. Those were unforgettable times that made my relationship with
Rome and all of Italy so strong».
As it so often happens to great geniuses,
Brouwer belongs to a small group of selftaught talent. «I've always been curious,
even as a child», when he used to breath
music and art at home. His father was a
composer, his mother a singer-songwriter:
«They separated, but this, in Cuba, was
seen as a normal life event, even when I
was young». It was his father, a successful
doctor, who encouraged him to play by
ear. Then the young and promising Brouwer began taking lessons. His talent was
so evident that he was offered the best
teachers: first the great Cuban guitarist and
pedagogue Isaac Nicola, who was in turn
a disciple of Emilio Pujol, and later in the
United States at the University of Hartford
and the Juilliard School. Here he studied
composition under Stefan Wolpe and Vin-

dire che il festival ha anche un grande richiamo turistico e di questo siamo molto soddisfatti e orgogliosi: certifica il nostro successo ma fornisce anche un aiuto
concreto all’economia del paese». E aggiunge: «Dobbiamo ringraziare molto
la Blue Panorama Airlines, perché è un’ottima
compagnia che ci tiene collegati con il mondo.
Cuba è un’isola e ci sono soltanto due modi per
arrivarci: in nave o in aereo. In nave, considerati i tempi, ci vuole troppo tempo, e dunque il
solo modo valido è in aereo. E per questo diciamo davvero un grazie sentito a Blue Panorama
e al a suo presidente Franco Pecci».
Il programma di quest’annno, la quarta
edizione del Festival Leo Brouwer, prevede dal 3 al 13 ottobre incontri e concerti di
altissimo livello, con, fra gli altri, le sorelle
Labèque dalla Francia, Niurka González
da Cuba, Edin Karamazov dalla Bosnia,
Ricardo Gallen dalla Spagna, B3 Brouwer Trio e Gonzalo Grau dal
Venezuela. «Devo e voglio ringraziare tutti – dice Brouwer – Sono un prilivegiato ad avere amici così bravi e generosi, fra i quali voglio ricordare anche
Gabriel García Márquez e Umberto Eco. A tutti loro va la mia riconoscenza».

Hans Werner Henze's El Cimarrón in Berlin. Along with
Morton Feldman, in 1972 he received a scholarship from
the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), becoming a composer and professor at the Academy of Sciences
and Arts in Berlin. Today there are numerous albums that
he recorded in Germany for Deutsche Grammophon.
A cosmopolitan lifestyle led him to conduct orchestras
around the world, from the Berlin Philharmonic to the Scottish National Symphony Orchestra, from the BBC Concert
Orchestra to the National Symphony of Mexico. This lifestyle has also led him to recognize profound differences
between what he considers Americans and other residents
of the United States, which he calls "Yankees". With clear
and easy to understand distinction: «Bush is a Yankee – he
says – Faulkner is an American».
In 1987 Brouwer was appointed, along with Isaac Stern and
Alan Danielou, an honorary member of UNESCO in recognition of his musical career. For some years now, Brouwer
has held a festival that has become a great success. «It is
not a state event – says the Maestro – but a cultural event
organized by private individuals and to which the government of Cuba helps out as much as possible. I must say
that the festival is also a great tourist draw and we are very
pleased and proud of it: it certifies our success but it also
provides practical help to the economy of the country». He
adds: «We have to thank Blue Panorama Airlines profusely,
because it is an excellent company that keeps us connected to the world. Cuba is an island and there are only two
ways to get there: by boat or by plane. It takes too long by
boat, and therefore the only real way to get here is by air. A
very heartfelt thanks goes out to Blue Panorama and to its
president Franco Pecci».
The fourth celebration of the Leo Brouwer Festival takes
place from October 3 to October 13 and includes evenings
and concerts of the utmost prestige featuring, among others, Labèque sisters from France, Niurka González from
Cuba, Edin Karamazov from Bosnia, Ricardo Gallen from
Spain, B3 Brouwer Trio and Gonzalo Grau from Venezuela. «I want to thank everyone – says Brouwer – I feel very
privileged to have such good and generous friends, among
whom I include even Gabriel García Márquez and Umberto

Marco Lo Russo è ormai un artista affermato. A decretarlo i numerosi premi e
riconoscimenti ricevuti, senza contare le
collaborazioni intraprese. Un successo
meritato considerati gli anni di formazione. Come nasce la passione per la musica
e in particolare per il suo strumento, la
fisarmonica?
Da piccolo ero molto timido e riservato, il
mio maestro elementare, istituendo dei corsi musicali pomeridiani, mi spinse verso la
musica. Per gioco, alla domanda che strumento vuoi suonare, risposi «a nonna piace
la fisarmonica». Iniziai un’avventura che mi
gratificava sempre più… Mentre facevo i
compiti e guardavo la televisione, ad orecchio tiravo giù le colonne sonore dei cartoni
animati e ad oggi è la mia vita e il mio desiderio di espressione e comunicazione.
Il suo stile è estremamente variegato e difficilmente collocabile:
dal jazz alla musica classica, dal sound contemporaneo alle sonorità calde del tango. Come nasce l’idea di mescolare insieme
più generi e sotto quale nome potremmo collocare questo suo
particolare stile?
In realtà la mescolanza stilistica non è mai stata un’idea né ci ho mai
pensato. Deriva sicuramente dalla mia formazione che comprende
sia il percorso classico accademico con studi di composizione, pianoforte, strumentazione e arrangiamento sia studi sull’improvvisazione e i linguaggi più contemporanei legati al jazz e alla musica
etnica. Il desiderio di creare una mescolanza stilistica è semplicemente scaturito dall’idea che esistono solo due tipi di musica: bella
o brutta anche se soggettiva questa banale dicotomia è emblematica per esprimere un dualismo estetico nel vivere quest’arte. Il mio
stile sicuramente possiamo classificarlo, se proprio dobbiamo, nella
World Music con contaminazioni elettroniche.
Dopo la recente collaborazione con l’attore Fabrizio Bucci – che
l’ha portato a esibirsi al VII incontro mondiale con le famiglie – si
appresta a prendere parte al Festival Leo Brouwer de Música
de Cámara. Quale il repertorio in serbo per la partecipazione?
La partecipazione al Festival Leo Brower è per me motivo d’onore, per il prestigio della manifestazione e per la richiesta artistica
a cui devo adempiere. Per l’occasione ho la possibilità di rivisitare
le opere di un compositore del calibro del Maestro Brouwer e ciò
ne esalta non solo le qualità artistiche indiscusse e indubbie, ma
rivela la persona che ho avuto la fortuna di conoscere: un uomo di
spessore e sensibilità che regala non poche illuminazioni. Ci sono
anche delle mie composizioni edite dalla RAI ne registrate nel disco
Mediterranenan Accordion, eseguite per l’occasione con il supporto dell’Ernan Lopez-Nussa trio.

Marco Lo Russo is now an established
artist. This is confirmed by the numerous
awards and recognitions, even without
counting the collaborations he has been
a part of, and is a well-deserved success
given his years of training. How was your
passion for music, and especially for
your instrument, the accordion, born?
I was very shy and reserved as a child. My
elementary school teacher drove me to music by setting up afternoon music courses.
When he asked me what instrument I’d
like to play, I answered for fun «Grandma
likes the accordion». I began an adventure that has been gratifying me ever since... While doing homework and watching
television as a child, I used to learn by ear
the soundtracks of cartoons, and today the
accordion is my life and my desired instrument of expression and communication.
Your style is intensely varied and difficult to label: from jazz
to classical, from contemporary sound to the hot sounds of
tango. Where does the idea to mix genres come from? And
how can we name your particular style?
In reality mixing styles has never been an idea nor did I ever think
of it. Surely it comes from my training, which includes both the
classical academic path with studies in composition, piano, instrumentation, and arrangement, and more contemporary studies on
improvisation and languages related to jazz and ethnic music. The
desire to create a stylistic mix has simply emerged from the idea
that there are only two kinds of music: good or bad. Although subjective, this obvious dichotomy is emblematic of the aesthetic duality of this art. My style can definitely be classified, if there’s a need
to do so, as World Music with electronic influences.
After the recent collaboration with the actor Fabrizio Bucci
– who led you to perform at the VII Families World Meeting
– you are about to take part to the Festival Leo Brouwer de
Música de Cámara. What is the repertoire for the occasion?
Participating in the Leo Brower Festival is an honor for me, both
for the prestige of the event and for the repertoire that I will perform. For this occasion, I will be given the gift to play a few of
the works of a composer of Maestro Brouwer’s caliber. This not
only highlights the artistic qualities of his work, which are unquestioned and unquestionable, but also the person I had the good
fortune to meet, a man of depth and sensitivity, and who is able to
enlighten you. I will also perform my compositions published by
RAI, and recorded on the album Mediterranean Accordion. They
will be performed on this occasion with the support of the Ernan
Lopez-Nussa trio.

The exhibition is curated by Germano Celant and it celebrates the dream that developed from the beginning of the 20th
century to the Seventies: achieving the
democratic dissemination of art through a
multiplication of the work of art as object
and the study of its aesthetic potentials. The
exhibition documents with over six hundred
works, including multiples and prototypes,
the transformation of the idea of uniqueness in art and in its perception through different languages of the twentieth century,
from artist’s books to magazines and from
experimental cinema to radio.The exhibition includes all the principal movements,
from Italian Futurism and Russian Constructivism to the Bauhaus, from Neoplasticism
to Surrealism, through the practices of the
New Realists, the Optical Art, and the radical approach of the Fluxus artists, culminating in the explosion in multiplication triggered by Pop Art, promoter of a genuine
“supermarket” of the art object.

This is the first major exhibition in Italy
dedicated to the use of Neon lights. It is
held on the occasion of the centenary of
its invention in the Sala Enel at the MACRO

the death of Amerigo Vespucci, the Superintendence for the Historical, Artistic and
Ethno-anthropological Heritage and the
Museums of Florence, in collaboration with
the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma,
have organized an exhibition dedicated to
the civilization of Native Americans. It is an
exhibition of iconographic evidence from
the early twentieth century by the great
American photographer and ethnographer
Edward Curtis. He devoted himself to documenting the civilization of the natives at risk
of extinction, and documented frescoes,

Wassily Kandinsky was not only the founder
of Abstract art, but also experienced different periods, from an early Symbolist phase
to the Bauhaus experience, to the Paris period of his later years. The exhibit in Aosta
has been coordinated by local authorities
in collaboration with the Antonio Mazzotta
Foundation in Milan and curated by Alberto Fiz. It focuses mainly on the last two
decades of the life of the artist.Paintings,
mixed media and etchings by Kandinsky,
from public and private Italian and foreign
collections, are displayed side by side with
those of other authors, including Hans Arp,
Sophie Tauber-Arp, César Domela, Florence Henri, Joan Mirò, Francis Picabia,
Piero Dorazio, Dorfles, Alessandro Mendini,
and Ettore Sottsass. The exhibition hosts
over 40 works of Kandinsky, among which
some masterpieces from the Thirties and
Forties have never before been exhibited
in Italy.

mate il concetto del Suv, ma avete paura delle dimensioni di un veicolo simile in città? Mokka Opel potrebbe
essere la risposta ai vostri dubbi. Tra le ultime nate della
casa tedesca, e presentata lo scorso marzo al salone di
Ginevra, la Mokka sta per “invadere”
anche il mercato italiano, visto che
l’uscita è prevista proprio per gli ultimi mesi del 2012.
Questo nuovo modello va all'attacco
del segmento B dei Suv, ovvero quella
fascia, in forte espansione, che comprende modelli lunghi tra 4,10 e 4,30
metri: nel caso specifico, la Mokka
misura 4,28 metri, 8 cm in più di una
Volkswagen Golf, ma nell’insieme
non perde il senso di compattezza generato a prima vista.
I tratti scolpiti ed eleganti la rendono particolarmente grintosa, pur
conservando un carattere sportivo grazie alle linee della carrozzeria,
muscolari ed atletiche. La pronunciata griglia anteriore e il rivestimento protettivo intorno ai paraurti e ai passaruote sono ravvivati
dalla tipica “lama” Opel sulla fiancata, che sale verso il posteriore.
La robustezza poi è ulteriormente evidenziata dai cerchi in lega da
18”, di serie su tutte le versioni, mentre la versatilità è data dagli spazi
interni dell’abitacolo: il volume del bagagliaio ad esempio può arrivare fino a 1.372 litri, mentre sulla vettura sono presenti fino a 19 vani
portaoggetti, a dimostrazione della considerazione riservata alle necessità pratiche di ogni famiglia.

a big size car in the city? Mokka Opel might
be the answer to your doubts. Among the latest additions to the German automaker, and
presented last March at the Geneva Motor Show, Mokka
is going to "invade" even the Italian market. It is expected
to be released at the end of 2012 in Italy.
Opel Mokka is a new SUV B-segment model. This is a
growing segment that includes models between 4.10
and 4.30 meters long. Mokka measures 4.28 meters, 8 cm
longer than a Volkswagen Golf, but as a whole it does not
lose the feel of a compact car.
The sculpted and elegant features make it particularly aggressive, while retaining a sporty character with muscular
and athletic body lines. The pronounced grille and protective coating around the bumpers and wheel arches are
brightened by the typical Opel
"blade" on the side, which rises
towards the rear.
The robustness is further highlighted by the 18" alloy wheels,
which are standard on all versions. Versatility is a given judging by the interior. For example,
the boot capacity can reach up
to 1,372 liters, and there are up
to 19 storage compartments in
the car. This demonstrates that the practical needs of any
family are fully taken into consideration.

Mokka infine introduce nel segmento

all’avanguardia, come una serie di sistemi di assistenza alla guida basati sulla

l’allerta in caso di involontario superamento dei limiti di carreggiata (Lane
Departure Warning).

il sistema di assistenza alla partenza in

Mokka introduces new technologies to the
compact SUV segment such as a series of
driver assistance systems based on the
front and the rear camera (Opel Eye), which
gives you access to many features including an alert for inadvertent lane departure
(Lane Departure Warning).
Among the standard features that enhance
comfort and safety, there is the Electronic
Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control
(TC), the Hill Start Assist system (HSA),
and the Hill Descent Control (HDC) - these
improve ride comfort and both uphill and
downhill safety.
Traction Control operates electronically as
a limited-slip differential. It prevents wheel
slippage and works synergistically with allwheel drive, using specific algorithms that
improve performance. The HSA increases
rider comfort by providing support when
the car needs to perform a hill start. The
system prevents the vehicle from sliding
down even after releasing the brake. The
HDC is of great utility in the opposite situation, i.e. when the vehicle is faced with a
steep descent, since it determines and limits the speed at which the vehicle can go.
The automatic speed control allows you to
not use the brakes.

on è esattamente come
giocare a pallone in acqua.
Anche se il principio è
simile: c’è una porta e bisogna fare gol. L’Italia è maestra, tanto
che alle ultime Olimpiadi ha conquistato l’argento, altro grande risultato dopo
un palmares ricchissimo. La pallanuoto
è sport per uomini – da qualche tempo
anche per donne – davvero rudi, robusti,
generosi. Ha origini antiche, anche se
controverse. Nasce nella Gran Bretagna
del XIX secolo, si dice come momento
di svago dei galeotti che, durante le ore
di aria al lago, diedero inizio alla pratica
di questo sport. Successivamente la disciplina esce dalle carceri per approdare
a fiere, mostre e festival, fino a disputare,
nel 1874, la prima partita ufficiale.
Sei anni dopo, in Scozia, la pallanuoto
si articola ufficialmente su alcuni principi di base: la competizione si svolge
in acqua tra squadre composte da sette
giocatori ciascuna. Ma lo sviluppo della pallanuoto così come la conosciamo
non ha ancora raggiunto la sua massima
espressione.
Secondo una corrente di pensiero lo
sport ha visto la luce nelle Scozia del
XIX sec. – invece che in Inghilterra – e
uno tra i più celebri allenatori del tempo, William Wilson, si prese la briga di
introdurre una modifica sostanziale. L’ispirazione gli venne dopo aver assistito
ad una partita di calcio: pensò di inserire
all’interno dei campi da gioco due reti,
collocando in questo modo la palla in
un punto preciso. Tra le regole cardine
dello sport vi sono anche altre similitudini con il calcio, come i due tempi supplementari in caso di pareggio e i rigori,
rispettivamente cinque tiri per squadra.
I falli sono considerati di due tipi, semplici e gravi. Con il passare degli anni
furono introdotte altre piccole modifiche che fanno della disciplina lo sport
attuale: nel 1928 l’allenatore ungherese
Béla Komjádi inserì il passaggio sulla
mano; il fallo semplice a partire dal 1949
non comportò più l’interruzione del gioco; gli anni ’70 sono ricordati invece per
aver sostituito l’espulsione definitiva con
quella temporanea; nel 2005 fu introdotto il rigore da cinque metri. Dopo le migliorie di Wilson la pallanuoto esordisce
come primo sport a squadre – guarda un
po’, proprio insieme al calcio – alle Olimpiadi del 1900. Oltre un secolo fa.

Sport legato a prestazioni fisiche non indifferenti, la pallanuoto
fa breccia anche tra le passioni del gentil sesso. Inizialmente la
disciplina era considerata eccessivamente brutale, ragion per cui
le competizioni tutte al femminile erano state escluse. In controtendenza il pensiero degli Stati Uniti, dove, agli inizi del ‘900, il
"softball waterpolo", versione americana della pallanuoto, è praticato anche dalle quote rosa. Dopo una breve pausa negli anni
’20 le squadre "total pink" riescono finalmente a disputare il primo
campionato nel 1961 in America. Poi sboccia anche in Italia, con un
"Setterosa", così è soprannominato, considerato tra i più forti del
mondo: ha vinto Olimpiadi, nel 2004, e anche Mondiali ed Europei.

Despite its considerable physical demands, water polo is making
inroads into the pastimes of the fairer sex. Initially this discipline was
considered too brutal and women’s teams were excluded from competition. This was in contrast to American opinions where, in the
early 1900s, an American version of water polo called “softball water
polo” was being practiced by women. Despite a short break in the
Twenties, the women’s team is finally allowed to play its first championship in 1961 in America. Later it blossomed in Italy as well, with
the "Setterosa", so they are called, considered one of the strongest
water polo teams in the world: they won the Olympics in 2004 as
well as past World and European water polo championships.

It's not exactly like playing ball in the water.
Although the principle is similar: there is a
goal and you have to score. Italians are masters at it and at the last Olympics Italy won
the silver medal, another great result in a
long list of victories. Water polo is a sport for
men – lately even for women – really rough,
strong, massive men. It has historic, although
controversial, origins. Born in Britain as a moment of relaxation for convicts who, during
the free time on the lake, started the game of
water polo. Later this sport expands beyond
prisons to become part of fairs, exhibitions,
and festivals, and in 1874 the first official
match was played.
Six years later, in Scotland, water polo officially gains some basic rules: the competition
takes place in water between two teams of
seven players each, whose aim is to score
as many points as possible by throwing the
ball into the opponent's net. But the development of water polo as a sport has not yet
reached its peak.
According to one school of thought the sport
was born in the nineteenth century in Scotland – rather than in England – and one of
the most famous coaches of the time, William
Wilson, took the time to introduce a substantial change. After having been inspired by a
football match, he came up with the idea of
inserting two goals in the field, thus keeping

cardinal rules of the sport, there are other
similarities with football, like the two overtimes in the event of a tie, and penalties, five
shots per team respectively. There are also
two types of fouls: simple and severe. Over
the years, other small changes were introduced thus changing the sport into what it
is today: in 1928 the Hungarian coach Bela
Komjádi introduced passing the ball by hand;
from 1949 onwards, ordinary fouls no longer
interrupt the game; the 70's are remembered
for having replaced temporary expulsions
with permanent ones instead; in 2005 the five
meter penalty was introduced. After Wilson’s

uristi e amanti della natura hanno sempre visto la parte
migliore del Kenya, quella fatta di sole, sorrisi e giovialità,
ma questa terra non è solo simbolo di safari e bellezze
naturali. C’è una parte, quella più nascosta e meno pubblicizzata, che verte in condizioni disagiate e precarie e necessita
del nostro sostegno. Una di queste aree sottosviluppate è Utange.
Situata all’interno della costa nord di Mombasa, Utange è un’area rurale che versa in condizioni di povertà estrema. Le problematiche che hanno portato la gente del luogo a vivere una vita
di stenti sono rintracciabili nella morfologia del luogo – essendo
troppo distante dalla costa non beneficia degli introiti provenienti
dal turismo – e, soprattutto, nella mancanza d’acqua. Il problema
legato al nuovo oro nero è di portata mondiale e interessa in modo
particolare l’Asia e l’Africa. Basti pensare che negli ultimi 50 anni la
disponibilità d’acqua è diminuita di 3/4 in Africa e di 2/3 in Asia.
Il problema legato all’acqua costituisce un handicap non solo a livello quotidiano: la OMS (Organizzazione Mondiale per la Sanità)
ha stimato che ogni anno muoiono circa 10 milioni di persone per
colera, tifo e dissenteria, patologie derivanti dalla mancanza di acqua potabile. Per porre rimedio a questa situazione di disagio la LIFOG, associazione nata per combattere i problemi legati all’abuso
di droga, ha promosso la costruzione di due pozzi nel villaggio di
Utange. L’area è posta a grande distanza dalla città e viene rifornita
solo due mesi l’anno (maggio e ottobre), per questo gli abitanti dei
villaggi sostengono ogni giorno lunghi cammini per procacciarsi la
loro razione quotidiana, togliendo tempo prezioso ad altre attività,
come l’agricoltura, unica fonte di guadagno e sostentamento di
queste aree. Il primo pozzo, munito di pompa e generatore, è sta-
to inaugurato nel 2002 e il suo impiego è sufficiente
solo per una parte dei villaggi dell’area. È stato opportuno realizzare un secondo impianto per arrivare a coprire anche la zona di
Mwembe Nyama, circondata da cinquanta fattorie. Il secondo pozzo, inaugurato
nel 2007, ha permesso in questo modo
di coprire l’intera area di Utange, garantendo acqua sufficiente per i bisogni
quotidiani e l’irrigazione dei terreni. I lavori sono terminati nel 2011, grazie alla
collaborazione degli amici dell’Onlus “Un
Chicco per l’Africa”, associazione umanitaria
che coopera con la LIFOG per tutti i progetti
atti a rendere vivibile Utange.
Altro grande problema che affligge la popolazione è
l’analfabetismo. Portando avanti attività poco remunerative – possono contare solo sui beni derivanti dall’agricoltura e soffrono la
competizione di strutture organizzate in modo più efficiente – gli
abitanti dell’area non possono permettersi di pagare le tasse per
mandare i propri figli a scuola. Dare un aiuto concreto a queste
persone è molto più semplice di quel che si pensi. Infatti sono sufficienti 250 euro per l’iscrizione all’Istituto scolastico, l’acquisto dei
libri e una provvigione di cibo per un anno. Una cifra irrisoria per i
Paesi sviluppati, ma estremamente esosa per chi non possiede nulla. Il progetto pensato da LIFOG vede la costruzione di una scuola
vera e propria all’interno dell’area, in modo che tutti i giovani dei

promoted the construction of two wells in
the village of Utange. However, Utange is
very far from the city, and it is supplied
with water just twice a year (in May and
in October). This means that every day
the villagers have to embark on long
walks to collect their daily ration. This
takes away valuable time for other activities such as agriculture, which is the
only source of income and livelihood in this
area. The first well, equipped with a pump
and a generator, was inaugurated in 2002 and
produces enough water for only some of the villages
in the area. A second water plant was needed in order to cover
the Mwembe Nyama zone, which is surrounded by fifty farms. This
second well, opened in 2007, covered the entire Utange area, and
ensured sufficient water for daily needs as well as irrigation of the
land. The projects were finished in 2011 thanks to the non-profit
organization "Un Chicco per l’Africa", a humanitarian organization
that is cooperating with LIFOG to make Utange livable.
Another major problem facing the population is illiteracy. By
pursuing unprofitable activities – they rely on the land to yield
goods, and depend on a market structure that is inefficient and

ourists and nature lovers have always seen the better part of Kenya, the one made of sunshine,
smiles, and joviality of its inhabitants. However, this land is not only a symbol of safaris and natural beauty. There is
an area, more hidden and less publicized,
that lies in a disadvantaged, precarious
state and needs our support. One of these
underdeveloped areas is Utange.

Located in the interior of the north coast of
Mombasa, Utange is a rural area in a state
of extreme poverty. The problems that
have forced the local population into a life
of poverty can be traced through the morphology of its location - being too far from
the coast, it does not benefit from revenues generated by tourism - and, above
all, its lack of water. The issues surrounding
the “new black gold” are global and have
affected Asia and Africa in particular. Just
think that in the last 50 years the availability of water in Africa has fallen by ¾ and in
Asia by 2/3.
The lack of water is not just a problem
in the daily lives of its citizens: the WHO
(World Health Organization) has estimated
that each year about 10 million people
die from cholera, typhoid, and dysentery
which are diseases resulting from a lack of

Infine, il progetto più ambizioso e necessario per quest’area è la costruzione di
un “Centro Medico”. Il piano è sostenuto
anche in questo caso da “Un Chicco per
l’Africa” che, attraverso la vendita di libri
e calendari, ha raccolto i fondi necessari
per la costruzione dell’edificio. Grazie alla
generosità di molti, gli abitanti di Utange
possono avvalersi dell’assistenza continuativa di medici e infermieri.

Providing concrete help to these people is much easier than you think. In fact
school enrollments, books, and food for a

to have equal access to a meaningful education. This is extremely important for the

come antidoto alla sfortuna?
Secondo un’antica leggenda
cinese sì.
La pianta in questione è la Vanda Coerulea, più nota come Orchidea Blu per via
del suo colore e, secondo i saggi dell’Antico Oriente, aveva il potere di allontanare le disgrazie ed evitare la sterilità
femminile. La diffusione della pianta in
Asia è tale, tanto da aver dato origine
a numerosi nomi femminili che hanno
tutti lo stesso significato: orchidea. Tra
i più comuni Yeuk Lan (come un’orchidea), Lan Fong (profumo d’orchidea),
Tin Lang (forte come un’orchidea), Sau
Lan (buono come un’orchidea).
La sua leggenda affonda le radici anche
nella mitologia greca. I greci usavano
chiamare la pianta kosmosandalon, “sandalo del mondo”, per via del labello rigonfio – tepalo inferiore delle orchidee
– a forma di scarpetta. Oltre all’associazione del fiore con la terminologia,
nel mondo ellenico l’orchidea è celebre
per una storia in particolare, quella di
Orchis.
La leggenda ha due narrazioni differenti in base al territorio preso in considerazione. Nell’Epiro (una delle tredici
periferie della Grecia), il giovane Orchis, durante la crescita, vide cambiare
a poco a poco il suo corpo: prima gli
spuntarono due seni, poi le sue forme
virili lasciarono il posto a curve sinuose.

an a plant be an antidote for
bad luck? According to an ancient Chinese legend, yes it
can. The plant in question is
Vanda Coerulea, a plant better known as
Blue Orchid due to its color. According to
the sages of the ancient East, this plant has
the power to ward off misfortune and prevent female infertility. This blue orchid is
so common in Asia as to have given rise to
numerous female names, all with the same
meaning: orchid. Among the most common, Yeuk Lan (like an orchid), Lan Fong
(orchid perfume), Tin Lang (strong like an
orchid), Sau Lan (as good as an orchid).
The legend of the blue orchid has its roots
in the Greek mythology as well. Greeks
used to call the plant kosmosandalon, or
"sandal of the world", because the swollen lip – enclosed by the orchid’s tepals – is

shaped like a pair of sandals. Besides this
word association, the orchid is famous in
the Hellenic world thanks to a particular
story, that of Orchis.
There are two different legends about the
blue orchid and they originated in two different geographical areas. In Epirus (one
of the thirteen peripheries of Greece), the
young man Orchis had his body change
little by little as he grew older. First two
breasts sprang up, and then his manly
shape gave way to smooth curves. The boy
had taken the form of a beautiful and ambiguous hermaphrodite, neither man nor
woman. His dual identity also gave him a
mercurial personality, sometimes he was
shy and reserved and other times more aggressive and bold. Shunned by everyone
because of his appearance, Orchis fell into
desperation, to the point that he took an

sua doppia identità lo rese mutevole anche nel carattere, talvolta timido e riservato, altre aggressivo e sfrontato. Schivato da
tutti per via del suo aspetto incerto Orchide si lasciò andare
alla disperazione, fino a compiere un gesto estremo. La
solitudine lo portò infatti a togliersi la vita. Dopo essersi lanciato da una rupe il suo corpo fu scorto da un
dio che, commosso dal gesto estremo del giovane, fece
nascere nel punto in cui giaceva il suo corpo numerosi
fiori bianchi: le orchidee. La pianta trae origine dalla
leggenda dell’ermafrodita per via della sua doppia natura
poiché racchiude in sé sia i simboli della femminilità che della virilità. Ma la storia più diffusa è sicuramente quella dell’antica Grecia in cui si narrano le avventure amorose dell’affascinante Orchis,
figlio di una ninfa e di un satiro. Dotato di una
rara bellezza e di un’estrema libido, il giovane
decise di conquistare il cuore di una sacerdotessa durante una festa in onore di Dioniso.
Il gesto fu però considerato intollerabile dalla
divinità che lo punì duramente facendolo sbranare dalle sue belve. Alcune divinità rattristate per l’amara fine
del ragazzo decisero di far sorgere dai suoi resti un fiore dalle
bellissime fattezze: l’orchidea.

Greece. It recounts the amorous adventures of the charming Orchis, the son of a
nymph and a satyr. Possessing a rare
beauty and extreme libido, the young
man decided to conquer the heart of a
priestess at a party in honor of Dionysus.
The gesture, however, was considered
intolerable by the gods and they punished him severely by having Orchis’
beasts tear his body apart. Some gods
grieved at the bitter end of the boy and
decided to plant a flower where the remains of his body lay. It was a flower with
beautiful features, the orchid.

the orchid flower. Among the most interesting, it’s worth mentioning the legend
of its origin in Italy. In the Bel Paese all
orchids are called "the Madonna’s sandals" as they bloom in May, when the
Feast of the Madonna takes place in Italy.
Moreover, their white color symbolizes
the harmony and perfection of the spirit.

Yucatán è uno dei più famosi stati del Messico, custode di gran parte del fascino
turistico del Centro America. Vanta
numerosi centri di interesse storico e
archeologico poiché, prima dell'arrivo
dei conquistadores spagnoli, proprio lo
Yucatán era il centro nevralgico dell'antico impero Maya. Le origini del suo
nome sono contrastanti: alcuni fanno
derivare il termine Yucatán dalla parola
“yukatlán” che in lingua azteca significava luogo della ricchezza. Secondo
altri storici del XVI secolo, l'origine è
più curiosa: quando gli spagnoli chiesero ai nativi il nome della costa, essi
risposero «tectetàn!» che voleva dire «non
ti capisco!» e da cui derivò l'attuale denominazione. Un'altra curiosità: a sud dello Yucatán, nella zona corrispondente
all’attuale città di Chicxulub, è sepolto
l'enorme cratere da impatto lasciato dal
meteorite che, con tutta probabilità,
sessantacinque milioni di anni fa causò
l'estinzione dei dinosauri. L’impatto fu
talmente violento che, ancora oggi, si

Lo Yucatán offre scenari imperdibili
grazie alla presenza dei cenotes, grotte
nel terreno simili a laghi tondi, vere e
proprie cavità sotterranee perfettamente circolari, dal diametro di molti metri

una attrazione per gli escursionisti e
gli speleosub di tutto il mondo. Cenote Park, situato nella cittadina di Playa

he tropical Yucatán peninsula is one of the most famous states in Mexico and is the doorway to much of the tourist appeal of Central America. It boasts many historical and archaeological heritage sites, dating from before the arrival of Spanish conquistadors, when the
Yucatán was the center of the ancient Maya empire. The origins of this name are conflicting:
some say that the term “Yucatán” derives from the word “yukatlán”. In the Aztec language, this
meant place of wealth. According to other sixteenth century historians, the origin is more curious:
When the Spaniards asked the natives the name of the coast, they said, «tectetàn» which meant
«We do not understand you!», and from here it derived its present name. Another curiosity:
the southern Yucatán, the area corresponding to the current town of Chicxulub, is buried in
the huge crater left by the meteorite impact that, in all probability, sixty-five million years
ago caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. The impact was so violent that even today
you can see the marks left by this celestial body.
The Yucatán offers must see scenery due to the presence of cenotes, which
are sinkholes in the ground similar to round lakes. They are veritable underground cavities perfectly circular with a diameter of several meters
across at the bottom of which fresh water is found: a magnet for hikers and cave divers from around the world. Cenote Park in the
town of Playa del Carmen, Mexico, is the largest park dedicated
to the phenomenon of these cenotes.
The capital of Yucatán, Mérida, was founded by the Spanish in 1542 and stands on the ruins of an ancient Maya
center. For the benefit of travelers and inhabitants,
during the tourist season, shows are organized in
the main square of Mérida. These shows culminate on Saturday at the Noche Mexicana along
the Paseo de Montejo, featuring traditional
music, dance and choreography, and set to

natura a farla da padrona e i paesaggi
sono mozzafiato. A quindici minuti di
viaggio da Cancún, collegata grazie a
due embarcaderos, è possibile raggiungere Isla Mujeres, l’Isola delle Donne,
territorio consacrato alla dea della Fertlità e della Luna. Qui sono concentrate
le principali attrazioni turistiche dello
Yucatán: ricca di resti Maya sopravvissuti alla colonizzazione spagnola – di
grande interesse è il Faro Maya, nella
parte più alta dell’isola – Isla Mujeres

fifteen minute drive from Cancún, connected by two embarcaderos, takes you to
Isla Mujeres, or Island of Women, an area
sacred to the goddess of fertility and the
moon. This is where the main attractions of

the Yucatán are concentrated: Mayan ruins
that have survived the Spanish colonization
– of great interest is the Mayan Lighthouse,
built on atop the highest part of the island.
Isla Mujeres offers breathtaking panoramic
scenery with rich fauna, especially marine
life. The Caribbean beaches of white sand
caressed by the turquoise sea and surrounded by coral reefs justify the discreet
charm and unspoiled Island of Women,
where even buccaneers and pirates came
to hide.
This part of Mexico, the small peninsula of
Yucatán, then, is one of the most important
treasure troves of archaeology and nature
in the world, a place where exceptions are

In an hour's drive from the city of Valladolid, you can find the most important
archaeological site in the region, Chichén
Itzá, which was the most powerful city in
the Yucatán during the Mayan’s Golden
Age. It has been a World Heritage Site
since 1988 and was placed among the new
Seven Wonders of the World. Its discovery
has contributed greatly to reconstruct the
history of the Mayan peoples. They were a
surprising people, with remarkable scientific knowledge, who worshiped the stars
and practiced human sacrifice, and whose
sharp decline still remains a mystery. Chichén Itzá includes numerous examples
representative of different architectural
styles, reflecting the coexistence of different ethnic groups. Among the most famous
buildings include the Caracol Observatory,
the Temple of the Warriors, and the Pyramid of Kukulkan, also known as El Castillo.

unimaginable without modern day instruments. The pyramid is oriented so that the
Sun, on the day of the equinox, illuminates
the north-west stairway, creating a shadow
of a giant serpent which represents the god
Kukulkan.
But, according to Mayan prophecy, it seems
that December 21, 2012, the day of the winter solstice, something special will happen
when the sun is positioned to the west of
Chichén Itzá. On this day, Chichén Itzá will
align with the center of the Milky Way, and
Kukulkan, the Feathered Serpent, will return
to announce the start of a new era or, for
the pessimists, the end of the world. Now
there is nothing else to do but wait for that
day hoping that the Mayan astronomers
have made a mistake in their calculation...

importante della regione, Chichén Itzá, la

dell’UNESCO dal 1988 e posto fra le Nuove
Sette Meraviglie del Mondo, la sua scoperta
ha contribuito notevolmente a ricostruire la
storia dei Maya, popoli sorprendenti dalle
notevoli conoscenze scientifiche che veneravano gli astri e praticavano sacrifici umani,
il cui brusco declino rimane ancora oggi un
mistero. Chichén Itzá comprende numerosi

più celebri ricordiamo l’osservatorio astronomico Caracol, il Tempio dei guerrieri e la

Castillo. El Castillo è un vero e proprio calendario tridimensionale costruito secondo una
raffinata serie di calcoli matematici che raggiunge livelli di precisione impensabili senza
le strumentazioni di cui oggi siamo in possesso. La piramide è orientata in modo che
il Sole, nel giorno dell’equinozio, illumini la
scalinata nord-ovest creando l'ombra di un
serpente gigante, il dio Kukulkan appunto.
Ma, secondo la profezia dei Maya, sembra
che il 21 dicembre 2012, giorno del solstizio
d’inverno, accadrà qualcosa di eccezionale: quando il sole si posizionerà ad ovest di
Chichén Itzá, allineandosi al centro della Via
Lattea, Kukulkan, il Serpente Piumato, tornerà per annunciare l’inizio di una nuova era o,
per i più pessimisti, l’ultima delle catastrofi.
Non resta che aspettare quel giorno augurandoci che gli astronomi Maya abbiano
sbagliato qualche calcolo…

A
cercare Birmania sulle carte geografiche si rischia
di fare un buco nell'acqua; si avrebbe maggior fortuna con Myanmar, che oggi è in effetti il suo vero
nome. E non è finita qui. La capitale era a Yangon,
che prima era conosciuta come Rangoon, poi è stata spostata a
Pyinmana che, per l'occasione, ha cambiato nome in Naypyidaw. Gli esempi potrebbero continuare e ci sarebbe da perderci
la testa. Ma perché è così? Da cosa deriva questa ridda di nomi?
Il fatto è che in tutto il sud-est asiatico non c'è nazione più irrequieta, vitale e ricca di contrasti di Burma, nemmeno il Vietnam
o il Laos sono così. Notato? Abbiamo utilizzato un altro nome,
stavolta però è per affetto, deriva dal colloquiale Bama e forse è
quello che più si addice a questo straordinario lembo di mondo.
La Birmania è il Paese più vasto del sud-est asiatico e tutto si
svolge in funzione di un fiume. L’Irrawaddy nasce nel Tibet e
dopo un percorso di 2.000 chilometri sfocia nell’Oceano Indiano dividendo in due metà il territorio. Lungo il corso d'acqua e
nelle pianure alluvionali sono sorti nei secoli gli insediamenti
birmani: villaggi e pagode che stillano come gemme dagli argini sfruttando i doni fertili del grande fiume. Ancora oggi, in
piena modernità, più dei due terzi dell’intera popolazione del
Paese vive qui, a ridosso delle sue sponde. La vita prende allora
i ritmi del fiume e della natura. Le feste tradizionali, ad esempio, seguono il calendario lunare e non hanno giorni fissati. Nei
villaggi di campagna a febbraio si celebrano le feste del raccolto;
la festa dell’acqua, che somiglia molto al nostro Carnevale, dura

the water, you would have better luck with Myanmar, which
in fact is its real name today. And there's more. The capital was Yangon, formerly known as Rangoon, and was then
moved to Pyinmana which, for the occasion, changed its name to
Naypyidaw. The examples go on and on and can make you lose
your mind. But why is it so? Where does all this confusion with
names come from? The fact is that throughout south-east Asia there
is no nation more restless, lively, and full of contrasts than Burma,
not even Laos or Vietnam. Did you notice? We used a different
name, but this time with affection, and it derives from the spoken
name of the country, Bama, which is perhaps the name best suited
for this extraordinary patch of the world.
Burma is the largest country of Southeast Asia and everything is
centered on a river. The Irrawaddy starts in Tibet and, after a journey of over 2,000 kilometers, leads to the Indian Ocean, dividing the
country into two halves. Over the centuries, along the river and the
floodplains, Burmese settlements were built: villages and pagodas
that ooze like gems from the fertile banks, taking advantage of the
gifts of the great river. Even today, in full modernity, more than twothirds of the country's population lives here, close to its shores. Life
then takes on the rhythms of the river and nature.
Traditional festivals, for example, follow the lunar calendar and don’t
have fixed dates. In rural villages harvest festivals are celebrated in

tre giorni e si svolge generalmente in aprile; nel mese di luglio
c’è la suggestiva festa delle luci per celebrare con canti e balli il
ritorno di Buddha dalla casa dei Deva, gli dei hindu minori, e
per l'occasione ogni casa viene illuminata; per finire, ma si fa per
dire, ci sono le feste delle pagode che iniziano a gennaio e terminano in estate. Il primo incontro con la realtà birmana è a Yangon, l'antica capitale, nei pressi del delta dell’Irrawaddy. Yangon
è una delle città più affascinanti dell'Asia perché ha conservato
molto delle caratteristiche originarie. La giungla che si insinua
nei quartieri, le centinaia di bancarelle che vendono cibi lungo i viali, gli odori pungenti, un'umanità colorata, sorridente e
cortese. Sulla collina svetta la cupola dorata alta 98 metri della
Shwedagon Paya che al tramonto si incendia di bagliori arancio:
è il luogo di culto più importante del Paese e i birmani vengono

qui a pregare almeno una volta nella vita. Anche Kipling rimase
ammaliato dalla sua magia e dal profondo senso di religiosità
che emana e la definì "una stupenda meraviglia scintillante".
Da non perdere la colossale statua del Buddha reclinato della
Chaukhtatgyi Paya, alta 17 metri e lunga ben 72. Viaggiare in
Birmania significa riportare indietro le lancette della storia di
almeno qualche secolo e lo si capisce bene a Mandalay, punto di
partenza per conoscere il vero volto di questo Paese. Dal monastero Shwenandaw Kyaung la vista è stupenda: si apre sulle
colline, sorvola il letto del fiume – ancora lui l’Irrawaddy – lambisce risaie e carri trainati da bufali e lascia intravedere nel verde squillante della pianura le antiche città di un grande passato.
A Amarapura si trovano il monastero di MahaGanayon Kyaung,
la Sagaing Hill con vista eccezionale sugli oltre 500 stupa e l’U
Bein’s Bridge, un ponte pedonale in tek
lungo 1,2 km che attraversa il lago Taungthaman. La città più bella è però dall'altra
parte del fiume e si raggiunge solo in barca: è Mingun, con la campana sospesa più
grande del mondo e il magnifico stupa
Myatheindan. Il paesaggio verso sud è un
caleidoscopio di scene fuori dal tempo ed
è il modo migliore per prepararsi psicologicamente all'incontro più emozionante
di Burma: la città perduta di Bagan, una
pianura di 42 km quadrati dove svettano
circa 5000 edifici sacri. Si resta attoniti di
fronte a uno scenario di così rara bellezza
e tanta struggente solitudine. Una sensazione che sarà difficile dimenticare.
La città sacra di Bagan
Bagan è testimone silenziosa di un'immane catastrofe. Nel 1287 un'orda di cavalieri mongoli su ordine di Kublai Khan
si dirige sulla città. I preparativi sono febbrili, c'è poco tempo. Bagan allora era
una città potente, rispettata e temuta sia
dall'Impero Cinese che dai regni Khmer.
Fra l'XI e il XIII secolo era diventata anche
un importante centro religioso e 13.000 templi alzavano le guglie dorate al cielo. Ora
però alcuni di quei templi venivano abbattuti: serviva materiale per alzare mura, erigere torri, fare qualcosa insomma che servisse a arginare quella marea montante. Non
si fece in tempo. La cavalleria mongola dilagò in città: saccheggi, violenze, soprusi, la
solita storia insomma. Bagan non si riprenderà mai più. Visitare oggi questa città significa fare uno sforzo notevole di immaginazione perché, nonostante siano rimasti intatti
meno della metà degli edifici originari, l'impatto è impressionante. Ci si chiede cosa
abbia pensato davvero Marco Polo visto che Bagan è sì descritta nel Milione, ma la
prosa è attonita, sbigottita. Due sono le principali strutture architettoniche che si trovano nella zona di Bagan. La pagoda, o stupa, e il tempio. Lo stupa (in birmano Zeidi
o Zedi o, a volte, Paya) in origine era un cumulo di pietre che fungeva da monumento
funebre, solo più tardi ha acquisito il simbolismo cosmico del Buddha. La forma è
quella di una campana su base quadrata o ottagonale alla cui sommità svetta una guglia in metallo dorato decorata con gioielli. Le pagode più belle a Bagan sono quelle
di Bupaya, Shwezigon, Mahabodhi, Nag-Kywe-na-daung, In-hpaya, e Minochantha.
Il tempio invece poteva avere forme diverse, diversi ambienti disposti su più piani e
spesso inglobava uno stupa. A Bagan sono assolutamente da vedere quelli di Ananda, Dhammayangyi, Gawdawpalin, Htilominlo. Shwegugyi, Sulamani e Thatbyinnyu.

sive festival of lights takes place in July with
songs and dances to celebrate Buddha's
return from the home of Devas, who are minor Hindu gods, and for this occasion every
home is lit; last but not least, there are the
pagoda festivals that begin in January and
end in summer.
The first encounter with real life Burma happens in Yangon, the former capital, near
the Irrawaddy delta. Yangon is one of the
most fascinating cities in Asia because it has
retained much of its original features. The
jungle creeping into neighborhoods, hundreds of stalls selling food along the streets,

the pungent odors, and colorful, smiling,
courteous people. On the hill stands the 98
meter high golden dome of the Shwedagon
Pagoda, which at sunset burns of orange
flares: it is the most important center of worship in the country, where the Burmese go
to pray at least once in their life. Kipling was
also captivated by its magic and the deep
sense of religiosity that emanates from it,
calling it "a stupendous, glittering wonder."
Do not miss the colossal statue of the reclining Buddha Chaukhtatgyi Paya, 17 meters
high and 72 meters long.

of over 500 stupas, and U Bein Bridge, a pedestrian bridge made of teak that stretches
1.2 kilometers across the Taungthaman lake,
can all be found.
The most beautiful city, however, is on the
other side of the river and can be reached
only by boat: it is Mingun, home to the
world's largest suspended bell and the
magnificent Myatheindan stupa. The landscape to the south is a kaleidoscope of
scenes that appear lost in time and this
is the best way to psychologically prepare for the most exciting encounter of
Burma: the lost city of Bagan, a plain 42
square kilometers in size and containing around 5000 sacred monuments. It is
astonishing to face a scene of such rare
beauty and so much agonizing loneliness as well. This feeling is hard to forget.
Bagan remains a silent witness to an
enormous catastrophe. In 1287 a horde
of Mongol horsemen headed towards
the city on the orders of Kublai Khan.
Preparations were hectic, there was little
time. Bagan was then a powerful city, respected and feared both by the Chinese
and the Khmer kingdoms. Between the
eleventh and the thirteenth century it
had become an important religious center with 13,000 temples that raised their
golden spires to the sky. But now some
of those temples have been destroyed:
at the time they needed material to
raise walls, erect towers, and in short do
something that would serve to stem the
rising tide of the Mongols. They didn’t
have enough time. The Mongol cavalry
swept into town: plunder, violence, oppression, the same story repeats itself.
Bagan would never recover.
Today when you visit this city you have to
place a considerable effort in using your
imagination because, although less than
a half of the original monuments remain
intact, the impact is impressive. One
wonders what Marco Polo really thought
when he saw Bagan and described it in
his book “The Million” with a stunned,
bewildered prose. There are two main
architectural structures that are found in
the area of Bagan. The pagoda or stupa
and the temple.
The stupa (in Burmese Zeidi or Zedi or,
sometimes, Paya) was originally a pile
of stones that served as a tomb, only
later it acquired the cosmic symbolism
of the Buddha. It is shaped like a bell on
a square or octagonal base with a goldplated metal spire decorated with jewels
that rises to the top. The most beautiful
pagodas in Bagan are those of Bupaya,
Shwezigon, Mahabodhi, Nag-Kywe-nadaung, In-hpaya, and Minochantha. Temples instead could have different shapes,
with many rooms on various floors, and
often embraced a stupa. In Bagan the
temples of Ananda, Dhammayangyi,
Gawdawpalin, Htilominlo. Shwegugyi,
Sulamani and Thatbyinnyu are a must
see.

e si chiede a un esperto di pietre preziose qual è la
caratteristica principale da prendere in considerazione per stabilire quanto preziosa una gemma sia,
risponderà la luce. E la luce che una pietra preziosa
è in grado di convogliare dipende dalla natura della pietra e
dal taglio, e qualche volta è addirittura più importante della
grandezza. Per dirla con Callimaco, meglio la qualità che la
quantità. Ora, prendete uno smeraldo dalla purezza eccezionale, fatelo tagliare da un vero artista, uno che con la mente
riesce a vedere quali e quanti piani ricavare dalla superficie
per strappare alla luce una gamma infinita di verdi liquidi diversi: quello che otterrete è un miracolo, eppure nemmeno

temples or Klong, and its market canals, would be an unpardonable crime. However, we are here in Thailand for its
emerald sea and our route lies to the south, where the land
tapers to a narrow strip leading down to Malaysia.
On both sides of Thailand, small islands with beaches and
coconut palms cut out color drops in a sea of incredible
tones. Off the coast of Surat Thani, in the Gulf of Siam,
there is the very well-known Koh Samui. The island itself
would be a good reason to decide to take a trip to Thailand. An exuberant nature, white sand, crystal clear waters,
and nightclubs: every hour of the day or night Koh Samui
has something to offer. The beaches of Hat Lamai and Big
Buddha¸ the Na Muang and Hin Lat waterfalls, the Ang
Thong Marine Park, Chaweng Beach with its long string
of nightclubs, shops, and hotels. Even more intimate, and
ideal for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts, are the nearby
islands of Koh Tao and Koh Phangan where each month,
on the beach of Haad Rin, you can dance until dawn at the
"Full Moon Party".

f you ask a gemstone expert what is the main feature to be
considered in determining how precious a gem is, he will respond that it is its light. And the light that a precious stone is
able to convey depends on the nature of the stone and on its
cut, and sometimes these are even more important than its size. As
Callimachus would say, better quality than quantity. Now, take an
exceptionally pure emerald, and let it be cut by a real artist, one
who can picture how many facets can be cut from the surface to
capture the light in an infinite range of different shades of green
liquid. What you will get is a miracle, yet even this miracle cannot
match the incredible variety of the colors of the sea in Thailand.

fatto di essere del tutto sprovvista di strade asfaltate, ha fatto sì che
Koh Phangan sia meno frequentata dal turismo di massa e abbia
mantenuto una natura più selvaggia. Molte delle sue spiagge, ad
esempio, sono accessibili solo in barca o con il fuoristrada. Le più
belle sono: a sud Wok Tum, Plaay Laem, Ban Tai, Ban Khai, Haad

Koh Samui
Chaweng, con i suoi oltre 5 km di sabbia bianchissima, è la spiaggia
più famosa dell'isola e anche quella dove si concentra la maggior
parte delle strutture ricettive e della vita mondana. Simili sono le vicine Choeng Mon e Lamai che però a detta di molti dispone di una
spiaggia più bella. Lungo la costa settentrionale si trovano Bophut
e Maenam da cui è possibile raggiungere le isole di Koh Phangan e
Koh Tao. A poca distanza si trova Bang Rak, la spiaggia del Grande
Buddha, dove una visita al tempio è d'obbligo. Di fronte al Parco
Marino di Ang Thong, lontano dai clamori della vita notturna, c'è
l'incanto tropicale di Taling Ngam: sabbia impalpabile, acque trasparenti venate di verde, il limitare della giungla e, visto che guarda
a occidente, un tramonto da sogno. A Hua Thanon, lungo la costa
orientale, si trova uno dei luoghi più caratteristici dell'isola: un villaggio di pescatori dove si tiene un famoso mercato del pesce. Nei
pressi la splendida spiaggia di Laem Set.

Phuket
Le spiagge più belle e frequentate si trovano nella parte sudoccidentale e dalle strade tortuose lungo la costa si gode una vista
mozzafiato sulle acque verde e azzurro del mare delle Andamane.
Patong è la spiaggia più famosa e mondana dell'isola; simile ma
meno frenetica Karon Beach. Poco più a sud c'è la tranquilla baia di
Kata, molto apprezzata dalle famiglie, che frequentano anche Kamala Beach. Proseguendo c'è il promontorio di Emerald Beach e la
deliziosa Paradise Beach. Di natura più esclusiva sono Surin Beach,

Koh Samui
Chaweng, with more than 5 km of white sandy beach, is the island's
most famous beach and also where the highest concentration
of accommodations and social life is. Similar islands are the
near Choeng Mon and Lamai even though, according to many,
Lamai has a nicer beach. Along the northern coast are Bophut
and Maenam islands from which you can reach the islands of Koh
Phangan and Koh Tao. A short walk leads to Bang Rak, and the
beach of Big Buddha, where a visit to the temple is a must. In front
of Ang Thong Marine Park, away from the noise of the nightlife,
there is the tropically enchanting Taling Ngam: impalpable sand,
clear waters tinged with green, the jungle’s edge and, since it
looks to the west, a dream sunset. In Hua Thanon, along the east
coast, is one of the most striking features of the island, a fishing
village where a famous fish market takes place. Close by is the
beautiful beach of Laem Set.
Koh Phangan
The island is only 20 km from Koh Samui and, without an airport,
can be reached only by sea. Thanks to this and to the fact that
there are absolutely no paved roads, the island of Koh Phangan is
less frequented by mass tourism and has retained its wilderness.
Many of its beaches, for example, are accessible only by boat or
by jeep. The finest are: to the south Wok Tum, Plaay Laem, Ban Tai,
Ban Khai, Haad Rin Nai, Haad Yuan and Haad Rin Nok - the beach
of the "Full Moon Party"; to the north Haad Sadet, Thong Nai Pan
Noi, Thong Nai Pan Yai, Bottle Beach, Hin Kong, Haad Son, Haad
Mae and Chaloklum; to the west Haad Yao, Haad Thian; to the
east Haad Salad, Haad Nam Tok, Haad Thian and Haad Yao.
Phuket
The most beautiful and popular beaches are located in the
southwestern part of Thailand. From the roads winding along the
coast you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the green and blue
waters of the Andaman Sea. Patong is the island’s most famous
beach and it attracts the most people; Karon Beach is similar but
less hectic. A little further south is Kata which has a quiet bay that
is very popular with families, as is Kamala Beach. Further along to
the south is the promontory of Emerald Beach and the fabulous
Paradise Beach. Surin Beach, Pansea Beach, and Bang Tao Beach
are even more exclusive spots. Nai Yang is near the protected
area of Sirinath National Park and offers a coastline over 10 km
long. Finally there is Naithon Beach, one of the hidden and rarely
visited gems of Phuket. By driving through luxuriant hills and
charming valleys you can get to its solitary white beach.

uno dei piatti campani più diffusi all’estero, è estremamente semplice da preparare e i suoi ingredienti, ossia pomodoro, mozzarella e basilico, lo rendono un degno ambasciatore della dieta mediterranea nel mondo. Si tratta degli
gnocchi alla sorrentina. Prima di descrivere la golosa ricetta, vale la
pena soffermarsi sulla storia degli gnocchi, che con ogni probabilità
rappresentano la prima forma di pasta usata dall’uomo. Alcuni gnocchetti, infatti, sono stati rinvenuti tra i resti di un villaggio palafitticolo dell’età del bronzo, nella valle di Ledro. A forma di piccoli bocconi strappati, anticamente erano composti da acqua e farina, che
poteva essere di miglio, farro o grano, e venivano cotti nell’acqua o
fritti. Alla corte degli Sforza comparvero con il nome di “zanzarelli”,
piatto forte nei banchetti celebrativi, venivano impastati con mollica di pane, latte, mandorle tritate e cacio lodigiano. Nel Seicento si
realizzavano invece i “malfatti”, con farina, acqua e, nelle famiglie
più abbienti, anche uova. Gli ultimi per anzianità sono proprio quelli
ora più diffusi in Italia, gli gnocchi di patate, fatti da quando queste
vennero introdotte in Europa intorno al 1880.
Tornando alla nostra ricetta, per chi non ama ricorrere agli gnocchi
già pronti, ecco il procedimento. Lessare le patate e schiacciarle ancora tiepide. Disporle a fontana su una spianatoia e impastare con

one of the most popular abroad.
It is extremely easy to make and
its ingredients, such as tomato sauce, mozzarella, and basil, make it a worthy ambassador of the Mediterranean diet to the world.
We are talking about gnocchi alla sorrentina.
Before describing this delicious recipe, it
is worth focusing on the history of gnocchi, which are likely the first form of pasta
used by man. Small dumplings, in fact, have
been found among the remains of a Bronze
Age settlement found in Valle di Ledro.
Shaped into small bite-sized pieces, they

were made in the past of water and millet,
spelt, or wheat flour, and were either boiled
in water or fried. At the Sforza court they
were named "zanzarelli", a popular dish
in celebratory banquets. They were mixed
with bread crumbs, milk, chopped almonds
and “cacio lodigiano” cheese. In the seventeenth century the "malfatti" gnocchi began to be made instead. They were made
of flour, water, and even eggs in wealthier
households. Gnocchi made of potato were
the last to be developed. When potatoes arrived to Europe, around 1880, potato gnocchi were introduced and they became the
most popular in Italy.
For those who do not want to use pre-made
gnocchi, here's the recipe. Boil the potatoes
and mash them while they are still warm.
Make a well out of flour on a pastry board
and then mix in the egg and two pinches of
salt. Shape the flour dough into cylindrical
rods. Cut them into small pieces about 2 cm
long. Roll them one by one with your thumb
up and down the teeth of a fork or on the
reverse side of a grater covered in flour. It is
preferable to prepare gnocchi the evening
before and rest them in the refrigerator for
one night. Coat them with flour to prevent
it from sticking to the pan or to each other.
To make the sauce, chop the onion and gen-

600 gr di polpa di pomodori
(oppure 800 gr di pomodori

dressing:
600 gr of tomato pulp

extra virgin olive oil

250 gr of mozzarella cheese
parmesan cheese
salt

dall'impasto tanti bastoncelli cilindrici da tagliare a pezzetti di circa
2 cm, che vanno poi rotolati uno
ad uno con il pollice sui denti di
una forchetta o sul rovescio di una
grattugia infarinata. è preferibile
preparare gli gnocchi la sera prima
per farli riposare in frigorifero una notte, avendo cura di cospargerli di farina onde evitare che si attacchino alla teglia e
tra loro. Per il sugo tritare la cipolla e soffriggerla in olio di
oliva, finché non assume il classico colore dorato. Unire la
polpa di pomodori o quelli freschi tagliati a cubetti, dai quali
va eliminata la buccia (scottare per qualche minuto in acqua
bollente per spellarli facilmente). Regolare di sale, e cuocere
per circa un quarto d’ora, alla fine aggiungere il basilico. La
salsa va tolta dal fuoco prima che si inspessisca troppo, altrimenti il passaggio in forno rischierebbe di rendere il piatto
troppo asciutto. Lessare gli gnocchi in acqua salata scolandoli non appena risalgono a galla. Disporre subito in una pirofila da forno, cospargere con il sugo di pomodoro, tagliare
la mozzarella a cubetti e spolverare infine con il parmigiano.

pronti quando il parmigiano assumerà un colore dorato e la
mozzarella sarà fusa. Un piatto di facile esecuzione la cui riuscita dipende soprattutto dalla qualità degli ingredienti. L’ideale sarebbe fare una gita sulla costiera per procurarsi quegli
ingredienti originali che fanno degli gnocchi alla sorrentina
un’ineguagliabile delizia per il palato.

too thick, otherwise the dish will become
too dry in the oven. Boil the gnocchi in water with salt and drain them as soon as they
float back up to the surface. Arrange them in
a baking dish and drizzle them with tomato
sauce. Cut mozzarella cheese into cubes
and sprinkle some parmesan cheese as well.
Bake at 200 °C for about 15 minutes.
Gnocchi will be ready when the parmesan
cheese turns golden color and the mozzarella melts. This is an easy dish to make and
its success largely depends on the quality of
the ingredients. A trip to the Sorrento coast
would be ideal to find those original ingredients that make the gnocchi alla sorrentina an
incomparable delight for the palate.

he 50's are back. Skirts, gloves,
and belts are in the spotlight for
Fall/Winter 2012/2013. The style
of the stars who made fashion
history are back in vogue: the elegant
simplicity of Audrey Hepburn; the classy
style of Marilyn Monroe, and the regal
beauty of Grace Kelly. The high-waisted
skirt is the trendy piece for the season.
Reintroduced in different shades ranging
from neutral to warm colors (at least one
in orange or ruby red is a must-have),
high-waisted skirt can be flared, soft down
at your sides, or simply adorned with a
belt. Ideal for highlighting the waist of
a wasp. Another must-have for the Fall/
Winter season are gloves. In all sizes
and colors, they complete a day or night
outfit. Long dresses take on a retro charm
when accompanied by long, black gloves
– especially if they are made of satin or
velvet. Gloves in-lined with fur, possibly in

un occhio sensibile». E se a dichiararlo
è Audrey Hepburn allora non vi è alcun
dubbio. La stella del cinema degli anni ’50’60 continua a dettare le regole della moda
anche a 19 anni dalla scomparsa. I più

Festival di Cannes, arriva finalmente sui nostri schermi il nuovo
film di Matteo Garrone, Reality. Prodotto
dalla Fandango di Domenico Procacci, la
pellicola racconta la storia di Luciano Ciotola (interpretato da Aniello Arena, che è
diventato attore in carcere), un padre di
famiglia e proprietario di una pescheria.
Luciano vive in un palazzo fatiscente di
Napoli, ma sogna il successo e la fama
che solo un reality come il Grande Fratello
possono dargli.

amaro, forte di quell'estetica kitsch che
avevamo già visto in Gomorra, con una
Napoli meno violenta ma specchio dell'Italia più popolare e ingenua. Grandi piani
sequenza, bella fotografia di Marco Onorato e, in generale, con una regia molto
curata, Reality di Garrone è un gran bel
film, una commedia ruvida in cui si assiste
alla storia di un uomo la cui vita viene resa
folle dalle ossessioni televisive.

A very black comedy, Reality is a descent
into the sociological hell of what can happen when one dreams about an “alternate”
reality, fictitious, and invented: the protagonist can only succumb to the mechanisms of
being famous at any cost.
If his life is to be reflected through the judgment of others, Luciano decides that they
can become anyone, or at least anyone that
follows the reality show on television.
It comes out as a funny but very bitter film,
strongly characterized by that aesthetic

work on the prequel to Alien.
In the course of production, the film became something different: 20th Century
Fox’s studios declared that «Ridley Scott
returns to the genre that he helped define,
creating an original epic sci-fi film set in the
most dangerous corners of the universe».
The father of Blade Runner and the Alien
saga, Ridley Scott is considered the founder of science fiction epics characterized by
highly successful settings. He is the creator
of characters that inhabit the screen with
strength and beauty as well as cult scenes
recognized by everyone. He has an artistic
eye that distinguishes him from the other
"puppets" in the genre.
A breathtaking visual experience, the film
is shot in stereoscopic 3D and would be a
pity to watch from anywhere other than the
theater.
Set in the year 2093, the members of the crew of Prometheus, a space ship
belonging to the Weyland Corporation, are directed towards a planet that
can explain the origin of life, as indicated by the Egyptians and Phoenicians.
A strong performance by a stellar cast (Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace,
Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Guy Pearce among others), the film becomes
something different than Alien both for the plot and the setting.
A must-see film for fans of the genre and of the Alien saga, Prometheus

scena musicale dei No Doubt.
L’ultimo album risale, infatti, al
2001, intitolato Rock Steady, che
ha fatto guadagnare alla band
statunitense ben due Grammy
Awards. Durante questi lunghi
undici anni, la leader
del gruppo, Gwen
Stefani, è riuscita a
realizzare due LP da
solista, riscuotendo un successo planetario. Il nuovo lavoro dei
No Doubt esce il 25 settembre, dal titolo Push and Shove, ed

this is the fifth LP and arrives after the success of their greatest hits album Smashes & Trashes (2009) and the album
Wonderlustre (2010), which both went gold in Italy. Black
Traffic contains unreleased tracks with typically rock and
electronic sounds that vary from rave to dubstep, all very

Per proteggervi contro la nuova minaccia derivante dagli esplosivi liquidi, l’Unione Europea ha adottato nuove
regole di sicurezza che limitano le quantità di liquidi che
possono essere introdotti nelle aree sterili. Tali regole
si applicano nei confronti tutti i passeggeri in partenza
dagli aeroporti dell’Unione Europea verso qualsiasi destinazione.
Ciò significa che ai controlli di sicurezza, il passeggero e il
relativo bagaglio a mano devono essere controllati per verificare la presenza di liquidi.
Comunque, le nuove regole non limitano la quantità di liquidi che possono essere
acquistati presso gli esercizi commerciali situati oltre il punto di controllo del titolo di
viaggio od a bordo di un aeromobile di compagnia appartenente all’Unione Europea.
Le nuove regole si applicano a partire da lunedì 6 novembre 2006, in tutti gli aeroporti
dell’Unione Europea, in Norvegia, Islanda e Svizzera a meno di eventuali modifiche.
To protect you against the new threat of liquid explosives, the European Union (EU)
introduced new security rules to limit the amount of liquids that you can take through
security checkpoints. They apply to all passengers departing from EU airports to all
destinations.
This means that, at security checkpoints, you and your hand luggage must be inspected for liquids screening in addition to other prohibited articles. However, the new rules
do not limit the liquids that you can buy at shops located beyond the checkpoints.
The new rules are in force as to Monday 6th November 2006 at all airports in the EU
and in Norway, Iceland, Switzerland until further notice.

Jet Lag
Il vostro “orologio biologico” può a volte non gradire i cambi di fuso legati al viaggio aereo: senso di affaticamento,

tra i sintomi più comuni. Per minimizzare l’impatto di tale fenomeno, si consiglia di dormire bene la notte prima del volo

sleep before leaving and, if you plan to stay abroad less than two days, keep you
biological clock set on your home time (i.e. keep your regular eating and sleeping
habits). In the event of a longer trip, it is advisable to get used to local time as
soon as possible and to conduct a regular and healthy life. Remember that getting over jet lag is generally quicker when travelling westwards than eastwards.

To help you feel better when you fly with us, just follow these tips and suggestions
designed to enhance your well being on board
Stare a lungo seduti in una stessa posizione può farvi sentire a disagio sull’aereo. Sgranchitevi gambe e
braccia ogni due ore circa. Alzatevi di tanto in tanto
e camminate su e giù per il corridoio oppure fate i
semplici esercizi* di stretching illustrati per prevenire
problemi circolatori.
Prolonged sitting in a fixed position can make you feel
uncomfortable in the plane. Every few hours, stretch
your arms and legs or carry out some easy exercises*
suggested below.
Consumate pasti leggeri, mangiate con moderazione
e limitare bevande gassate, tè e caffè.
Eat a light meal and moderate you intake of fizzy
drinks, tea and coffee.
Moderate il consumo di bevande alcoliche, poiché
queste sono assorbite più facilmente dal corpo ad alta
quota a causa della bassa pressione dell’aria all’interno della cabina.
Moderate your intake of alcohol.
In caso di permanenza prolungata a bordo è consigliato sostituire le lenti a contatto con degli occhiali
per evitare irritazioni oculari. Togliete sempre le lenti
a contatto prima di dormire.
In case of a long flight it is recommended to wear eyeglasses rather than contact lenses. Remove contact
lenses before sleeping.
*Vi suggeriamo di sospendere immediatamente questi esercizi se
causano dolore o disagio.
Bevete molta acqua naturale, meglio se in piccole
quantità e spesso.
Drink plenty of water to keep you hydrated.

Start the exercise by sitting in comfortably in your
seat in an upright position.
Poggiate entrambi i piedi sul pavimento. Flettete i
piedi puntando i talloni in su e poi in giù. Ripetete per
cinque volte.
Rest both feet on the floor. Flex both feet with toes
pointing upward, then point your toes downward
Perform this exercise five times.

Sollevate dolcemente il ginocchio verso il busto per
alcuni secondi, poi lasciatelo andare, poggiando
nuovamente il piede sul pavimento. Fate lo stesso
con l’altra gamba. Ripetete cinque volte per gamba.
Raise you knee gently towards the chest for a few
seconds and then release, placing your feet back on
the floor. Continue with the other leg. Repeat five
times for each leg.
Mettete le mani sotto una coscia e sollevatele dolcemente verso il busto. Ruotate la caviglia in modo
circolare per 5 secondi. Ripetete con l’altra gamba.
Ripetete questo esercizio cinque volte per gamba.
Place your hands under one thigh, and gently lift toward your chest. Rotate your ankle in a circular motion for 5 seconds. Repeat with the other leg. Perform
this exercise five times with both legs.
